Well, I was reading This Geeklist
and realized I also like reading other people's profiles - yet mine was blank and vague. Thus, for your reading pleasure (or punishment) here is Stuff About Me.GAMING HISTORY
I've been gaming since I was pretty young. Back then, it was largely Risk
with the family, with probably a smattering of other games in there like Life, Snakes and Ladders
, Candy Land
When I was about 8 or 9, I started teaching myself chess from a book; I had a friend down the street whose dad was a pretty avid chess player, and thus he was, too. In fact, I think they were pretty avid gamers in general, though I didn't realize it at the time. They actually had a game of Titan
set up in their basement, though I didn't know what it was at the time (and wasn't allowed to touch it, obviously).
As time went on, my love of video games and board games continued to grow, though during my youth it was mostly video games. I played a few RPGs, but never really got into them too much - I liked reading the rules and building dungeons, but never could find the time to play or run a long campaign. But I did play games like HeroQuest
and Battle Masters
and enjoyed them.
Through college, I was almost exclusively a video gamer. I'd occasionally go into a store and see a board game I liked and interested me, but I wasn't sure if I'd be able to find people to play them.
After I got married, had our first kid, and graduated college, I discovered Mage Knight
, while we were living with my parents so I could find a job. I loved the game, and eventually started volunteering for it. I even had the opportunity to act as official Rules Arbitrator for a couple years, and loved it! But, alas, the game was eventually cancelled, and while I still enjoyed it, I started looking for other avenues of gaming.
This led me to discover Heroscape Master Set: Rise of the Valkyrie
- which, in turn, helped me discover BoardGameGeek as I was searching for resources for it. Because of BGG, I was able to start inching my way into games like Risk 2210 A.D.
. The game that really kick-started me into more "hard-core" boardgaming was Twilight Imperium (Third Edition)
... and after that, I was hooked.
Lately, I've tried resisting the urge to purchase TOO many games, as I have only a limited amount of gaming time as it is. But board gaming has rapidly become a favorite hobby of mine, sometimes even surpassing that of video gaming!
My gaming has mostly been with family; to this day, I still game with my brothers and, occasionally, with my in-laws. However, as time allows, I also have started expanding my gaming to local groups. Maybe once the kids are older, I'll be able to do that more often. My kids are young now, so my gaming with them is mostly childrens games, but I hope by playing with them, as they grow older I can teach them some of my favorites, too GAME TASTES
While I will play a wide variety of games, from party games to Euro games to even a few abstracts (depending on the situation, who's there, etc), my preferences tend to be toward the so-called "Ameritrash" genre. I really like games deep-fried and dripping in theme and conflict, with good amounts of strategy, but just enough luck to keep things interesting. I'm not always very good at them (my strategies are never as fleshed out as they should be), but the more theme the game has, the more enjoyable I find the game, win or lose.TOP 10/HOT 10
My TOP 10 are my current top-10 favorite games (IE, the ones I'd likely be most interested in playing.)
My HOT 10 are the games that have seen the most play lately.ABOUT ME
I am the oldest of 10 children. Yes, it was crazy growing up sometimes, but at the same time, it wasn't as bad as you might think. I lost my mom in 2008 to kidney cancer, unfortunately. My dad has since remarried a wonderful woman!
I myself have been married since 2002 (Married on 02-02-02, to be exact), and I have four little girls, and at the end, a little boy, for five in all. We are now officially "done", and we look forward to the adventure of continuing to raise them all.
Besides board games, I like to play video games (mostly Nintendo stuff), watch movies, and spend time with my kids. I also am a high school sports referee. Currently, I officiate football and basketball, but I've done baseball in the past as well.MY AVATAR
My avatar comes from the game Mage Knight
. In the game, there are various factions vying for power and control of The Land. One of these factions is the Solonavi, beings of light from an unknown plane, whose purpose is not fully known. They do seem to oppose an evil faction known as the Tur'aj (who are represented by the Apocalypse faction in the game). What other motives they have is unknown. They often grant power to various individuals in return for "favors" later; these people become known as Oathsworn - serving the Solonavi, sometimes temporarily, sometimes permanently.
One of the figures from the Sorcery set was called the "Solonavi Shade". Not a lot of background was given for them (and even being a Rules Arbitrator for the game, I wasn't always privy to the story stuff), but I've always kind of envisioned them as Oathsworn who have died, but have yet to completely fulfill their oath. The Solonavi then bring them back as Shades to complete their tasks.
I liked the Solonavi Shades because I thought their sculpts looked cool: Dark and mysterious. Also, the Solonavi Shade units are some of the most versitile rank-and-file units in the game, as they have an ability that lets them copy the abilities of other figures in play. Thus, I decided to use a Solonavi Shade as my avatar (and simply added the glowing red eyes to add a little flavor).
