I've been playing (or thinking about playing) games for decades now. I think it started on a family vacation (where? lost in my foggy memory) when my dad bought my sisters and me the game Payday. We set it up in the hotel and that probably started me off.
As a high school freshman my friend introduced a group of us to D&D and we played at lunch and sometimes weekends. I later bought other role playing games (Runequest, Stormbringer, Traveller, etc.) but they didn't see much play. Later in high school I bought Nuclear War and we had many nights of, "Do you have change for 10 million people?"
I'm not sure how, but sometime in 1995, I discovered GURPS and Pyramid Online. Although I only played one session of GURPS, it led me back into the gaming fold. I soon found other games through their forum, mostly Cheapass (Kill Doctor Lucky, Devil Bunny Needs a Ham, etc.). These got some play, but then in 2003, I found Carcassonne in one of those Christmas stores for 25% off. The rest, as they say, is a big gaping hole in my wallet.
I've definitely followed a stereotypical path, buying a few games, then buying everything, and now I'm tapering off. Currently, I'd probably like to sell off about 50% of my games.
I prefer light to medium weight games, but I'll play pretty much anything. I like a theme to make sense but I can overlook it if the game is fun enough (Zooloretto). As you can see by my ratings, I'm pretty easy to please.
The following are generalities and all have exceptions. I like a bit of chaos. I don't like complete and absolute open information. I'm not big on 3D spacial games (or even 2D it turns out after playing that laser game). Dice are okay and sometimes really fun. I like games to have those "woohoo" or "god damnit" moments. Brain burners should be played with a one minute timer (and by someone else).
I have three/four game groups:
Davis Boardgames ( http://davisboardgamers.blogspot.com/
)- a group of about 7 to 12 that meets biweekly
Friends - four (sometimes three) of us meet once a month
Lisa - my wife likes Carcassonne, 10 Days in Africa, Attica, Thebes, Dominion, etc.
Lorelei and Sophie - Lorelei likes adventure games like The Adventurers, and Return of the Heroes. Sophie likes Monkey Madness or playing with the the pieces of just about any game.
My personal Top 10 and Hot 10 are combined into games I like or want to play because I haven't yet.
All kids games are ranked according to my five year old (now
six seven eight nine ten
eleven), or in the case of toddler games, according to my two year old (now
three four five six seven
