Intro - 0:00 to 5:40
Ridiculously long rules overview - 5:41 to 43:33
Conclusion - 43:34 to 58:16

(somebody should really create a "I watch every minute of UV's ridiculously long video reviews" microbadge. Just saying...)

For more of my reviews, check out this link:

My reviews - an UndeadViking's quest to rate every game in his collection

Of this one...

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/videos/boardgame/all?username=U...

Or even this one - my own little corner of the internet...

www.undeadviking.com

Lovingly hosted and maintained by the fine folks at GameSalute.com

For those of you who want to have a cool UndeadViking microbadge (I think there were like 4 of you) you can find those here..

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/microbadge/20830

Also – if you think I should review a game, let me know! And if you happen to be a publisher or a designer of a game you think I should be aware of, let me know that as well! You can either send me a Geekmail here on the website, or shoot me an email at undeadvikingvideos@gmail.com.

Thanks for watching!

As a final note, and this goes for any review you may read or watch, not just mine, if you decide to buy a game because of a review, please take a couple of minutes to email the publisher to let them know about the reviewer and the good work they are doing. Give them the link to the review that pushed you into your purchase, and tell them what you liked about it. I, as well as the rest of the board game reviewers on BGG, would appreciate it greatly. Thanks again for watching!

I would like to take just a couple of minutes to alert you to the Toys for Tots drive that Michael Mindes of Tasty Minstrel Games has going on. I realize that a lot of you have a hatred of Facebook and Facebook promotions, so I am not going to go and tell you to sign up and help out with this, but I am sure there are several of you out there that are big Facebook users and following these links would really help out children that are in need. Thanks in advance for your support.

http://playtmg.com/blogs/tmg-news/4143012-toys-for-tots-driv...

http://www.facebook.com/tastyminstrelgames

Oh, and I am not affiliated with Mr. Mindes and TMG games in any way other than owning and playing the games that he develops and that I consider the guy my friend, so please don't think I am part of some big social network conspiracy or anything...

OK, I will take the start of your video as a challenge to myself. Since you love Chad Jensen's games and haven't played Combat Commander I will teach you how to play. I am kinda like you about wargames. I am not a huge wargamer, but something about Combat Commander makes is one of my farovite games. As for Urban Sprawl I can't wait to come over and play it sometime.

I won't be able to watch tonight because I should've been in bed an hour ago, but nearly 40 minutes to explain the rules? Somehow I don't think that would fly with my wife. Usually her eyes start to glaze over after 5 minutes. Unfortunately this might have to be one I just drool over. Looking forward to watching this tomorrow.

I'm wondering how this compares to Sunrise City.
I chose not to back sunrise on kickstarter due to the way that company is distributing their games.
Perhaps this is a "Sim-City" alternative for me.

Thank you for the video review. Really amazing to see and hear everything from another perspective that has played it well before I get to.

With watching this video, I don't think it'll be any more complex then explaining rules of Agricola. Maybe 15 minutes or so before getting the first turn started.

The building placement was the only rule that slightly confused me when first reading the rule book, and I think this clarified it for me.

I was around 98% sure I was going to complete my P500 pre-order... now I'm 110% sure. Really can't wait for my copy to arrive.

Great review, Lance. Dominant Species is my favorite game, and after I read the rulebook for Urban Spawl, I went straight to the p500 to order a copy. Thank you very much! I am on the Jensen band wagon! The man is amazing. I don't think I ever complimented a rulebook before, and now I've done it twice. Keep up the good work, Chad! You, too, Lance! BTW, you are not kidding!! The Vikings stink on ice!! yuk

Hmmm... This REALLY reminds me of a good game that I played a long time ago. I think it's the part where you hold a role/elected office/special abilities/etc... for a while then lose it... Can't think of it...

Looks great Lance. Thanks for taking the extra time on this one. I especially appreciate the 15 minutes after the rules overview.

Really, "I watch every minute of UV's ridiculously long video reviews". This time.

Nice video. I have already preordered it, and will get it at Essen. I've made my decision a couple days ago after reading the rule book -a well written book. What I haven't grasped back then, were the extra chips with wealth / prestige points and how they are influencing the cost of a building. Now it is clear. Thanks Lance.

After you watch my video, hopefully you will be able to teach the game as you go - you could probably even teach the game as you go just by reading the rulebook! Hope you like the video when you finally get the chance to watch it!

For those that want to get the game ASAP, you can still order it through the P500 program as of this post direcly at the GMT website.

http://www.gmtgames.com/p-296-urban-sprawl.aspx

I think that will still be valid until the beginning week of October or so.

Thanks for the compliment!

Not to derail my own video thread - but seriously...how BAD are the Vikings? My mind is just boggling. I knew they would be awful this year, but not this bad. When we lose to KC this weekend, I can only hope they just fire everyone and go shooting for Andrew Luck.

Replies to comments in order...

1.I welcome anyone and anyone to make that Microbadge! I would also like them to make another Microbadge to go with it that says "I would watch UndeadVikings reviews but they are too damn long!"

2. I look forward to doing the AH review - it is going to be awesome. At this point it probably won't be as great as it has been hyped up to be, but I will still love doing it.

3. You gotta be kidding me. I have been growing it out without trimming for a while now...and even letting it go crazy on the sides for the upcoming "Best Beard on the Geek" contest. Hopefully be December I will be looking like the full on "Wild Man from Borneo" image I am shooting for.

Really ?

Would you mind telling me how you've managed to do that ?

As far as I know GMT don't do Essen, the only way to pre-order from them at the moment is by P500 and that would have to be shipped to your home address.

If there's an option to pre-order and pick up at Essen, I'm in.

It runs about the same, but it feels quicker because you are always doing something - no downtime.

It should be noted that there are variants in the rulebook to lengthen or shorten the game as desired.

I guess all will be happy - sellers and buyers - to know.
I have contacted GMT and Chad Jensen and they have directed me to UGG - Udo Grebe Gamesdesign - a German distributor of GMT games.

That's great info! Thank you for posting it here for the German users.

Thanks Lance! Urban Sprawl has been on my radar, and thanks to your video, I just P500'd. Great job explaining the game, as usual. Love Sim City, Love Dominant Species. Urban Sprawl seems like it's going to be a blast!

There's a few Sunrise City videos out there. Definitely check it out when you get the chance. Seems like a fun one too. Much lighter than Urban Sprawl, but it has a unique scoring track mechanism that seems like it will really make the game shine.

You say the game is about 3 1/2 to 4 hours have you tried the shorter game? I know with Dominant Species we pulled out some of the cards to try and help cut down on the time. It took about an hour off and was still very competitive.

About 3 for the 2 player I think. At least it felt like that. Honestly it could have been faster if my wife and I were not chasing our daughter around while playing the game.

In my mind, there about 3, maybe 4 games that have the slightest of chances of supplanting this game. I don't think it will happen, but I will keep my mind open.

Thanks for another excellent overview! Coming from the designer of Dominant Species I was very interested in this, but wanted to first hear some feedback on the game (I don't care much for blindly buying games), and this is a fantastic and honest endorsement.

I appreciate particularly the bit at the end that highlighted the game's drawbacks. The whole video I was watching the rules and thinking it sounded cool or intuitive or how it actually seemed like it would be easy to teach, but rules don't offer much of the feel of the game.

I'm generally fine with folks taking their time to make their moves (some in my group don't care too much for it), but downtime kills me. If I have to wait more than 10 minutes before I'm active in a game again, I detach from the game. Dominant Species avoided this with the worker placement mechanism, staggering players moves to a degree that someone never spends more than a few minutes inactive, as I understand it, this game has no such mechanism, players have a turn ordered turn and they take all of their actions within the confines of that turn, do I understand that correctly?

Something else that I don't care much for is rapid change between turns. A clear analogy to demonstrate, as I feel it fits the comparison to Urban Sprawl fairly well, is Acquire.

For those that don't know Acquire, you place tiles on a grid and what the tile is adjacent to determines how the game responds to that placement (such as opening a chain, growing a chain, merging a chain, or nothing). I love Acquire, however with 5 or 6 players the game gets out of hand. The strategies you wanted to use often vanish before you again become the active player, making it a chaotic tactical game, and a heavy chaotic tactical game leads to the last problem, of long turns.

So from your review, it sounds that I would (might?) not enjoy this game much with 4 (it's maximum), however the problems would probably be much lessened with 3 and nearly gone with 2, so to me, your review has helped a ton in determination of if I want this game. To me, after viewing, I am looking at this game and asking myself do I want this game to play with 2 or 3 players? I am of course taking in future feedback that will be posted, but I'm sold on every other aspect of the game, thanks to this video.

I am still very much looking forward to playing this game (even if it's a table of 4!), and making my own determinations with that, as problems aside, it looks like a really fun game.

I also agree with your note about games that've come out this year. Maybe I haven't played enough of them, but only one has really impressed me (Letters from Whitechapel), and only one has generated enough buzz to sustain my interest (The Castles of Burgundy), I hope you do a top 10 for the year again, I'm looking forward to seeing people's lists and hopefully finding out about something I'd missed!

Thanks again for the video, always insightful.

P.S. I watched every minute, some of them 2 or 3 times. robot

I believe he mentioned it in the video, the rule book does include how to shorten the game. When you are shuffling the contract decks (city/town/metropolis) where you put in the major event card (airport/sports team/Olympics) that triggers the next phase (or end of game for Olympics) to occur. You could essentially put these cards anywhere in the deck to shorten or lengthen the game.

I don't see it as random really, since, yes, the cards that come over are different, but there is so much going on and so many options, you never really feel like you got screwed by the draw. Even if you get hammered into a situation where you are unable to build "x" then you just grab some cheap building permits (the 1,2, and 3) or maybe grab a contract to put in your favor box and get ready for the next turn.

Thanks for the reply. Beyond the card draw, though, there are events, changing buildings' values (which would effect the elections, if I saw that right), and the squashing of buildings. Maybe randomness isn't the right word. Controlled chaos maybe?

Would you consider 2011 is shaping up to be the year of the filler, year of the me-toos or year of the expansion?

We've had quite a few solid "filler" games I'll define simply as light games that play under an hour.

We've had a bit of the me-toos. Those games that retheme popular recent games without offering much originality.

Maybe its the lack of good, original titles for them to hide behind but expansions to great games of the past few years seems prevalent these days too.

Thanks for the review Lance. This one looks like fun.

Great review Lance. I got a chance to play this last night and I agree that this is a great game. I'm actually going to pre-order it based on my one play. The one thing that I think didn't come across in the video very well is the actual amount of luck in this game. The prestige and wealth handed out during the cleanup phase is completely dependent on the turn of the cards, so that if the right cards happen to hit the rows where you have a strong presence, you catapult ahead. The event cards are also very swingy. There are ways to mitigate the luck but since they're simply shuffled into the deck you can get hosed quickly with little recourse. For example, I had just won the election for Mayor when the next turn, two event cards came out the immediately cost me 9 prestige. There was no way of knowing those cards were there, and in general, it's supposed to be good to win elections. Nevertheless, I got hit badly by the simple turn of the cards which put me behind for much of the game. I definitely feel like there's a good deal more luck in this game than in Dominant Species.

That being said, as long as you know what you're getting into and not expecting some Caylus-like experience, this game is a ton of fun.

Luck is a part of this game, but as you play the game more and more, it becomes easier for you to mitigate these factors and plan strategies around them. Yes, you might get slammed with a prestige loss because you are the mayor, but then it is time for you to use that Urban Renewal card you have been holding onto to tear down your opponents strangle hold on a high prestige cross section of the board so you can get it back.

When I say "Game of the Year", it comes down to a lot of factors, but the biggest one is "What game did I have the most fun playing?". As of right now, Urban Sprawl has given me more enjoyment than any other game that has come out in 2011.

Terrific review, Lance.

As to your misgiving about downtime (and, like you, I'm usually quite okay with some downtime...usually), I wonder if (since the game does use Action Points) Chad toyed with the idea of a "time track", such as Martin Wallace's in Tinners' Trail. This would distribute the action-point activity more equitably around the table, with the person having spent the least so far getting the next chance to do something. Obviously, this might have implications for other activities, such as resetting the card displays, but that does not preclude the possibility of it being employed.

thanks so much for your reviews...really enjoy them-

what might bug me about this game is that they didn't stick with the Sim City color coding:

residential

commercial

industrial

that will cause some mistakes the first few games i'm sure-

I chose not to back sunrise on kickstarter due to the way that company is distributing their games.
Perhaps this is a "Sim-City" alternative for me.

From what I can see of Urban Sprawl (I will be playing it in a couple of weeks), the two games are quite different but deal with a lot of the same things such as zoning, job occupations that give you certain advantages and buildings, of course. Sunrise City is more abstract and is 3 dimensional because your buildings go upwards. You don't try to score the maximum points each turn but a specific number because then you can double your score for the turn. The scoring is decided by the zone tiles or building tiles as well as the proximity of matching zone tiles to public buildings and parks. For Example, building residential next to a fire station gives a plus one bonus. Bidding (not with money but with markers) for zones plays a big role as well as tile placement that can go off in any direction North, South, East, West or up. Sunrise City seems a bit lighter. It is still very challenging but clocks in about a third of the time as Urban Sprawl. You might even think of it as a sort of Urban Sprawl lite, half the calories and less filling, or so it would seem. I will have to tell you in a couple weeks when I get some play time with my group.

When I first seen the screenshots my first thought was SimCity as well. The first game where everything was top-down. I know it has nothing to do with it but that's what perked my interest at first.

After finding out more about it, the game looks awesome, can't wait for it!

Wow that was a long review!

Can you comment on the balance between luck and skill?

If you had to break down a on a percentage basis:

e.g. 80% skill, 20% luck

How would you rate this?

Thanks!

At first, it is 50/50. Once you get to know the game and realize the swings, I think it gets down to around 75/25 skill/luck.

If you are looking for a game that you can plan out your entire turn without having to worry about anything bad happen, this isn't the game for you. If you like the idea of managing semi-controlled chaos, I would highly suggest it.

So, is a lot like Dominant Species in this, I mean, at first glance one thinks it too luck dependant but after a couple of plays luck is less important and chaos more controllable... You say once the nuances of the game are known Urban Sprawl is 75% skill and 25% luck, what would you say about Dominant Species? More or less the same? Im asking you this since I do love Dominant Species and consider it the best 2010 design and I know many people dislike it just because they think there is too much luck involved in the game which I dont think it happens to be true once you control it.

Thanks again

Have to say, I really dislike the fact that I can't jump around on Vimeo.

Really wanted to hear why you think so highly of this one.
It's a good game, but (and maybe it's just the sparseness
of good games this year, as you said)it doesn't grab me
the way the real classics do.

Rules explanation was great, but just didn't have time
to sit through it, already knowing 'em.

Oddly, AP didn't touch me at all - the decisions were
too complex to fully calculate the effect, so I found
playing on instinct seemed to work well.

Great video UV as usual.

Got to play this game last night for the first time and it was pretty cool. We had 4 players and it was over 3 hours for sure.
It's very detailed seemed to make sense. Though the one thing we all thought was that there was some downtime between turns, and you really can't plan ahead much as things change up to the last minute before your turn. But even on someone else's turn, you are still involved as there are events and whatnot that will pay you prestige or money or both. Elections can change things and you have to figure out who controls what in order to see who wins the election. The media certainly helped the eventual winner as he got +Prest/Money quite a bit. So even when it's not your turn there are things you have to pay attention and help with.

I enjoyed the game and now that I have played it, I'm sure it will only get better the next time we play.

Lance,

After watching multiple reviews of Urban Sprawl, it was your review that made me pull the final trigger to purchase it. I'm glad I did because I've been looking for a city building game with twists and this game definitely has those twists. I'm very disappointed in certain critics saying there is long downtimes. The few plays I've done, I didn't really see that because I was constantly trying to evaluate the board when it wasn't my turn.

Thanks again for a great review.

What about the whole catch-up mechanic that everyone hates? Is it a problem?

I have never been so nervous about getting a game to the table like I have with Urban Sprawl. It will be hitting the table this Friday, and I pray that everyone, including myself likes it.
