Thanks for the shout out, Lance! I'm glad I was able to help you out.
Good review, but are you sure you are doing counterattacks in combat right? I was doing it the way you said, but then I re-read the rules and I think in your example the melee would get to add cards against the magic and not the other way around. Don't think of it as "Red is counterattacked by yellow," but as "red counterattacks yellow." That way you can try to plan your counterattacks based on what is in your hand and what you think the other player might play. It makes combat in the solo game less confusing too. Re-check the rules and let me know if you agree with this.
If the attack value of a player’s Combat card is equal to or lower than his opponent’s attack value and his card has a counterattack icon matching his opponent’s attack type, the player may make a counterattack
This is from page 16 of the rulebook. Note you are checking the icon on the combat card that is lower and not the other way around.
If a red and a yellow are played and are tied, it is the red card that gets the extra cards.

Ha!
Wotta noob I am.
At least I was screwing it up in the same way every time. Thanks for pointing it out. I don't think that there is any large change, the combat is still deadly as all get out.
I agree, the new combat system really sour it for new DQ'ers. My big thing, is that combat seriously slows the pace of the game which can bore people not used to the game or really into it.
Great review by the way. I picked it up at GenCon solely for the RW characters and, luckily enough, really like it. I think it helped that my first play, by myself, as I was reading through the rules, lasted less then 30secs - flip dungeon tile, flip trap card, role, die. Awesome!

But your hands are huge
As an older gentleman told me at the bar this past weekend - "you look like a stout fellow!"
I am bigger than average person, and that includes my hands. I was able to palm a basketball when I was 14.
I always feel like I am going to rip those little cards to shreds. I wish there was an option to purchase normal sized cards for games that I enjoy, like Dungeonquest or BSG.

Teach Rilyn to shuffle. She needs to earn her keep!
Am I to understand correctly that you said most of the time, 4 out of 5 adventurers die in this game? And there is nothing you can find to really improve your stats of your adventurer?
I am curious to understand why someone would want to own this game then. If the survival rate was 50 percent..maybe I could understand...

Simply put, it is just fun to watch your friends die. Hell, it is even fun to watch yourself die.
There is nothing like cheering against your buddy as he crawls toward the exit with 2 health left, trying to beat the sun.
And to the other question, I wear size 12 shoes, but extra wide.
Does the rulebook still contain my favorite rulebook line: it is best not to ask what happens to adventurers trapped in Dragonfire Castle after the sun goes down (or something to that effect)?
Thanks for taking the time to make this review. I enjoy watching and hearing people talk about games SO MUCH more then just reading them.
I picked this games up today, and will be giving it solo try to firm up the rules. Then Wednesday night a friend and I will be give it another go, or two.
Great review, watched it as my copy was on it's way to my front door. Also love the t-shirt . . .who knew all it took was for a trooper to put on a pair of glasses to end the cursed Rebellion, but I think Mr. Vader is gonna be pissed !!
Your review made me buy this game and I've been having lots of fun playing together with my son. The version I purchased has all the optional combat rules included (and tons of other optional rules btw.)
