Board to Death TV reviews Descent: Journeys in the Dark. Steve gives it 7, and Michaela 6 out of 10 and they summarize the game thusly.

What's Cool:
Lots of characters to chose from.
Nice 3D pieces.
Map pieces that can easily be used for other games.
Good battle system.
Your characters can have familiars.
Nice fire attacks and magic attacks.

What's Not:
Dropping items makes them disappear into a puff of smoke.
If the game master is new to the game, be prepared to wait a while while he reads.
The game master has a much harder time to win at this game.
Some rules need to go be reviewed in the forums.
There are cheesy scenarios... so write your own!

Neutral Information:
It feels like playing a traditional Pen and Paper RPG.

P.S. I have permission to post the Board to Death reviews at this site.

Yo! There's no GM! GMs make most of any game and do their best (or at least should be) to make the game fun.
Overlords try to kill players.

You can do almost anything? have you two ever played an RPG? The fact that you assume that any RPG is D&D really hurts. If you use all, or even most of the pieces from the game, you are rollplaying, not roleplaying.

It feels like a traditional pen & paper RPG? Really?

Horrible review. Dices, really? Did you say dices? It's dice. Die is the singular, dice plural.

Yeah they took a lot of flak for "dices," including from me.

I agree with most of the cool things mentioned, but not so much with the bad:

If you are dropping an item, it generally disappears, but considering there are "too many portals" to town, you should just think ahead a bit and go and sell the stuff you cannot carry. Besides, if it would not disappear, the Overlord would have had even less of a chance of winning.

The Overlord should always be the most experienced player. Besides: if you want a massive game AND a lot of depth, you should be prepared for it to have a lot of things to familiarise yourself with. Right now, this statement sounds like it comes from some spoilt bratt: "I want everything and more, and I want it RIGHT NOW! Daaaaddyyyyyy!"

The Overlord indeed has a rather hard time to win. The Well of Darkness expansion improves his situation to some extent. But as an Overlord, I always like the heroes to win, although I never hold back. It makes the game seem a bit more like an adventure than if the monsters would finish off the heroes (notice how rarely that happens in an adventure film? :-P)

No more reviewing of the rules once you have the expansions.

Cheesy scenarios? I never noticed that. Perhaps because I don't really care about the scenario and just want to get some pummeling going on. The only thing that is relevant, is what the big boss is like...

Yes, I am very prejudiced about this game, because I love it to bits. That said, though, I completely respect those who do not. I just think the reasons given are not very valid and/or entirely objective and therefore require a bit of criticism themselves. Anyone wanting to buy this game should really try to get their information from several sources in order to get a good idea of this game, I think. You should note that this game tends to be VERY long - something not emphasised enough in the review, in my opinion. Give it a try before you buy. I was hooked :-)

Just bought this game and played the first scenario twice with different groups. I think the game is a 5 or 6 out of 10 as written. I totally agree that with some house-rules this could easily be a 10 out of 10. So, off I go to work on some rules. I've been role-playing since 1979 so it shouldn't be too hard for me.
