I really liked this review. I appreciate when you share little observations about elements of the game that don't sit right with you, while still acknowledging it's a good game overall. These sorts of things are very helpful in getting a feel for a game.

Or that's how I feel, anyway.

My go to reviewer. If you haven't read the book this game is named after, then do yourself a favor and read it.

I most definitely NEED to read this book. I've heard great things about this and the Songs of Fire and Ice series. Did you happen to see the HBO series? Is it worth watching at all?

Thank you David for the acknowledgment, it's much appreciated !!

Thanks Max !!

There are a lot of great things about The Pillars of the Earth, unfortunately there are a lot of things that didn't sit well with me either.

I just finished watching the HBO series, but I haven't read to book, so I can't say whether the two compare..

I will say that the series itself was quite good. I really liked all the political intrique that was going on - which seems less present in the game unfortunately

Considering the fact there there is NO Political Intrigue going on in the game at all? Or building of any Church. Hahaha.

I am definitely going to have to watch the HBO Series though, I've heard from a couple people that it is worth checking out now.

Yeah, I suppose the theme is somewhat pasted on this game.. Check out the HBO series, and share your thoughts.

Isn't "building the church" represented by VP? A woodcrafter turns wood into VP and a stonecutter turns stone into VP, for example. Isn't that just saying "my woodworker contributed took the wood I provided and used it to help build the cathedral?"

Is it that the church progresses at the same rate no matter what you do that makes it feel like there is no connection? I think of it as the cathedral being built whether you contribute or not. The more VP you have, the more you contributed to the process.

Then again, I don't have this game. I have enough worker placement games!

That's what you are "supposed" to feel like you are doing, but quite honestly it doesnt. Might as well be a blank board with no pictures and a wooden space ship as a turn marker. Again, the game is mechanically sound, it just doesn't resoundingly scream "THEME" to me.

Technical critique. Music volume could be a bit lower, but an otherwise good choice both thematically and for mellowness that doesn't distract.

A great review as usual. I too thought the game was somewhat fiddly when I first played it, particularly at the part of the game when everyone gathered their wood, stone and gravel. We have significantly reduced the "work" required to play the game by putting the workers directly on the card itself, instead of placing them on the board with the resources. This also allows the resource cards to remain in their original place instead of having to bring it to your playing area and then remembering to return it, etc. The game moves alot smoother. Before we always seemed to get bogged down in who was getting what, how many of that, etc when distributing the resources. We would also sometimes forget to collect all 9 cards and have to redo the 7 card laydown of the resource cards. I also recommend using the "holier-than-thou" player mats at the BGG download area as this gives all your personal materials, craftsmen, etc a designated place to be. The artwork of the mats look like they came with the game and they really help to keep things organized.

Those two "tune-ups" really helped streamline the game for us.

Excellent ideas all around !! That's why I enjoy BGG so much...so many cool crib sheets and ideas passed around from one gamer to the next. Thanks Don for those great ideas !! +1 for you !!

Nope....it's a very popular tune that I first heard from my favorite TV Series ever, Band of Brothers.

I've had my eye on this one for some time now and I'm glad I watched your review. A couple of the people in my group like worker placement games so I thought this would be fun. However, your summary at the end makes me wonder if this really would be all that exciting a play. As you stated it seems like an awful lot of work each turn. Thanks for the review!

Convinced that it's not worth picking up after all because it's too fiddly.

If everyone does part of the between round upkeep, it takes very little time. Just divide the various tasks among the players.

The theme doesn't feel pasted on to me simply because I realize that, short of getting a hammer and a saw and a plank of wood out, I'm not going to ever feel like I built something in a game. I think the basic gsme premise here is that the players take on the roles of Master Builers, or Foremen, who are in chagre of workers which they send them out to obtain resources, and them hire craftsmen which they use to convert the resources into materials used in the construction of the church, while preforming other administrative tasks, such as going to market, paying taxes, etc. I think the designers realized that gamers playing PotE would never actually feel as if they constructed an enormous edifice through the act of gameplay, and decided that this approach was more realistic anyhow. Why? Because the game would be about having the most money in the end if you were supposed to be in the role of a worker, but it is instead about VPs. If you've played a few Euros it becomes increasingly clear the VPs in them tend to represent favor with the Ruling class, nobility, church etc., that was more relevant in medeveal society that it is today. Some games even call the VPs "Prestiege Points."

So, in Pillars the Game is not about building a cathedral with your own two hands, but overseeing the constructiuon in the most effecient manner so as to make the greatest contribution and curry the most favor, either for your family of construction cmpany, I'm not sure which. (Take your pick.) I think the theme is just fine.

I can't understand why anyone would complain about the church pieces that come in the game, but many have mocked them over the years. The criticism here was mild, but I felt a bit misplaced.
