Enrico, really enjoyed this review, I had the GDW version 1st and 2nd edition and now own the Phalanx version of this classic, it's a great game to play with a novice gamer like my buddy Pete we both enjoyed this game very much and yes the Phalanx version is much better than the older versions, thanks for the trip down memory lane and I hope you can find the time to review more of these older lighter classics, I look forward to your next review.

Great session reports and reviews Enrico!

You mentioned that you played with all the rules of that edition--was there any railroad cutting?

Also, when I play as the Union, the Confederates give me a very hard time with their cavalry. If I don't spread out my infantry to prevent their jumps, they raid the Union interior, threatening: my supply, manpower, and even border state Rebel recruiting behind my lines. With Union troops spread out, there is not enough manpower to smash Confederate forts. This slows the Union advance down considerably, making me gnash my teeth and quaver. If neither side makes a mistake, it makes the Union game a question of: is there enough time? Tense and exciting. Give me oxygen!

Thanks a lot for your video reviews--keep 'em coming!

Cheers,
Pete

This was my first time, and rebels seemed to have a fairly easy
go of it - didn't really have to dance around too much. I think
there were some times when cav was effective though.

Skimming through the rules again (it's been a while since I played
this - was without internet for some time), I don't see rules
on railroad cutting in the options for the section.

You can see the (white) destroyed railroad markers in this counter sheet:

I think they take a march to repair.

I think they're in the 2nd edition rules only, but I'm not sure.

Must be a different edition - they're not in my set,
and there were no rules for them. Pity, they could be
interesting.

Good review and I completely agree with the rating you gave. I've played this game since I was 15 and I still take it out Every few years even though it doesn't have the depth of Victory Games Civil War (which is actually a good thing for me). You are right that The dice rolling aspect and keeping track of command does get a little bit exhausting in longer battles

Alright. I have a hope, though my hope may be more more of a spit into the wind than a thoughtful weighing of probabilities.

I like war games. My 13 year old daughter does not. For quite a while, I have been trying to find the "right" one so that she sees the attraction people have with them, without boring the detail out of her.

I can't get anywhere with this approach. I'll read reviews, forum threads, watch videos and then hang my head. One of my problems is I'm attempting to pick the perfect game that will turn the lights on for her.

I know doing that is like trying to physically pick a thought out of her mind. That's truly "Mission Impossible".

All of that said to say this;

Because A House Divided seems to be one of the more beloved low complexity war games, and because Alan Emrich is working on a 4th edition through Mayfair Games, and because you--having low expectations of the game before you played it, grew to like it because of the balance between accessibility and good war game gameplay--I have preordered the game.

Woah. I'm out of breath. "Pat, I'd like to buy a period for a hundred..."

Your turn. Tell me I made the worst of choices. Say, "Dude, you're talking to a guy that plays games with himself". Demand that I get off your channel.

I'll grab my iPad, hit the Gunsmoke app and watch a few episodes of that fine show as I lick my wounds.

If I didn't want to interact, I'd not load the vids up
for people to see.

My worry though is that maybe wargames just ain't gonna be her thing.

Another is that this is a fairly dry representation, compared to what
I see with things like Command and Colors, or Memoir '44, that seem
to have glitzier components and more modern appeal.

At the least though, I think you'll have a pretty good light wargame,
which is something I don't know about with those others - and something
which plays solo.

Thank you, Mr. Viglino. You made a few good points, the 'dry representation' being one that hadn't even occurred to me. Being a grognard I'm surprised you still can categorize so objectively.

Well, hmm. Heck with it. I'll stick with the preorder and whenever it arrives I'll manage to find someone to play it with.

Nice three-part playthrough, by the way. It ended abruptly, but you gave a good flavor of the game.

I noticed that you do. I recently subscribed to your list. Though I don't normally watch your non-wargame videos, I watched your treatment of In the Shadow of the Emperor. I laughed for two days. laugh

Good stuff, that was.

Dundy, I wish you the best luck on this! I humbly suggest that this game might be too long for a reluctant new wargamer. (I think it would be fine for an enthusiastic new wargamer.)

May I suggest you look at wargames with a short time length? There are geeklists of such somewhere.

Also I wonder if she would like this humorous and cartoon-science fiction wargame The Awful Green Things From Outer Space, which happily is back in print with nice quality components?

Let the dice roll! Good luck.

Thank you for the suggestion Mr. Gelman. I watched a Dice Tower review of it, saw that Boards and Bits had it for $16, and decided to buy it.

I'm that hopeful (read "desperate") that wargame mechanics may become pleasing to her.
