Nice review. Which game to you prefer B-17 or B-29? Is B-29 different enough from B-17 to justify the purchase? Does B-29 have the same role playing element that B-17 has of following the fates of the individual crew members and trying to complete 25 missions without getting shot down? Nice use of "whisper voice" at the end of the review.

Couldn't say; they are both good but they have a completely different feel; B-17 has more action, B-29 more historical immersion. In their own 'field of specialization' they both succeed in doing what they are trying to do.

Yes [see above]. To the point that I believe that some negative comments B-29 has received come from the fact that B-17 fans were expecting something more similar to that game.

Yep... but with maybe even more role playing here since you have to survive 35 missions to complete a campaign, so you really have the time to get to know your men well! And narratives do develop around crew members: some may get wounded, some frostbitten, some may die... some may be lost at sea and later rescued, or just lost forever... they may be forced to land in Japan, and at that point you have a table to roll on to see if they survive as prisoners until the end of the war! Most importantly crew members gain experience after a certain number of missions and this gives them positive modifiers when attempting to perform certain tasks [like those related to navigation]. So you do see them evolving from green to veteran status... unless of course they die in an unpredictable freak accident after some missions... which can be quite maddening, but, again, accurate in terms of what could happen in real life and in a real war...

Marco, Thank you for answering my questions and for all your in depth reviews. I thought board games/war games were obsolete til I stumbled across your "Disaster on Everest" review on you tube. Back in the day I had a pile of Avalon Hill/TSR games. I'll put B-29 on my wish list.

Marco, this is a very good presentation of what "B-29" is and is not.

As an owner of "B-17," I'm pleased with the different play experience provided by "B-29." The Superfortress was the most technologically advanced aircraft of the era and one of the game's strengths is its faithful modeling of the plane and its systems.

The experience of bomber crewmen over Japan was different from that of Eighth or Fifteenth Air Force crews over Europe and the game demonstrates this very well. The "conflict" in the game is more with the plane itself and the challenges related to bombing missions--formation, course, weather, fuel, technical failures--than with a traditional "enemy" but is no less interesting because of this.

The level of detail presented in "B-29" makes me very excited to anticipate the upcoming "Picket Duty" which takes the action to a Fletcher-class destroyer off Okinawa, on the sea instead of in the sky. I also think the designer's revision to "B-17" (which will also model the B-24 as well) will be worth buying even for "B-17" owners.

My hope is that eventually he will also design a "B-52" simulation presenting that remarkable aircraft in settings from Linebacker missions over North Vietnam to strategic penetrations of Soviet airspace in a nuclear-penetration flight using different versions of the BUFF.

There is a fellow at the church where I go to who was a crew member on a B-29, I think Charlie was a gunner. I found it out when I saw he had a B-29 bumper sticker on his car.

I love that you're talking about ghosts and then look off screen and have to shut off the camera, then it's back into a Blair Witch style close up.

Another fine review and a funny ending. Top stuff. When you broke out that monster of a tables and charts booklet then I realised this game is definitely not for me. I can happily sit at a table and play a war-game such as Napoleon's Triumph for 5 hours straight, and I don't have to refer to a rule-book or chart once. I would go mad in 5 minutes with that many tables to refer to.

Brilliant review as usual! I really like B-29 too and looking forward to the expansion that is in a p500 system at the moment.

Even though B-17 appears busier with more attacking enemy aircraft, these will seem repetitive after awhile and a little overrated. But I much prefer the color coded tables sheets that comes with B-17! Much handier and less fiddly than that chart book of B-29.

Please, hug your bambino for me !

Marco, while I'm sure you're a great reviewer, and I appreciate your hard work, your accent and your tone of voice is incredibly annoying.

Oh, it's ok if you think that my accent and tone of voice are incredibly annoying. After all your comment is incredibly annoying too, so that leaves us kind of even.

As a former B-52G crewmember, I'd be interested in such a game as well! cool

Great review Marco. I am a long time player of Queen of the Skies. I just ordered a copy of B29 . I can 't wait to play it.

Marco, I for one really appreciate your reviews. But the ending of this one, tops all that I've seen so far! ROFL!

(and pay no mind to "Mr. Annoying," we are with you!)

As another associated with B-52G's, I'd pay big bucks for that!
(even though such a game would feature B-52D's primarily, if not completely.)
