absolutely great review you bring the game down to it's basic point: it's cold and dead and not fun i had the same feelings like you, wenn we played the game. thanks.
to all the others: do yourself a favor and buy or play a good game instead
I am just watching this after playing this tonight for the first time. I didn't know much about this title going in. I was telling my group the same things with about as much emotion. I just don't get it.
I had to watch the review because I saw the apology. I like this game a lot, but the apology is sooooo funny, jajaja. I agree the theme here has no sense with the mechanics, but I have no problem with abstract games (I love them), and the mechanics in this game work very very well. It just didn't touch the right spot for Tom.

Mr. Vasel, I hope your usual video reviews show less pathetic behaviour.
I think maybe Tom has run up against the "too many games to review, too little time" wall. I know that I couldn't be a game reviewer (or a movie critic, for that matter) because there are just too many I would have no interest in reviewing to begin with.
OMG! great review. You have expressed every feeling I have had regarding this game over the past few weeks. I wish I had seen this review before I purchased.
I was trying to get through the rulebook. Read a couple of pages fell asleep. Read another...wanted to put a screwdriver in my eye. This went on for a few weeks (I had to reread a few times.) Eventually I played a practice game alone and thought to myself..."What are my friends going to say when I start teaching them this game? Will they say anything or just blankly stare at me , mouths agape, thinking to themselves what the hell possessed him to pick this game to play??? Why is he torturing us like this?"
There is sooo much crap going on and yet no life to it. I even had to go back to the instructions to read about the game again, just to see what exactly is supposed to be the theme because I wasn't feeling anything. Even in games I disliked, I've never had to do this before. No fun!
I'm a wargamer and I've heard you don't care for serious wargames. You know what? I really don't care, a lot of people I look up to and admire don't play wargames. Also, I have to buy games that are engaging to my 5-year-old daughter, to my 18-year-old son, and to my wife - that I will enjoy too. Melody and your non-wargame video reviews are a major aide to me and extremely entertaining as well.
Honestly, I have never played Vasco da Gama. I've only played Gulo Gulo & Chicken Cha Cha Cha. Otherwise, since I generally only play serious wargames I doubt that I will ever play VDG anyway. Right now I am considering K2 and one other game suitable for a precocious 5-year-old.
At any rate, the review was great ... sublime even ... You know what? I'm happy to be alive in our epoch. Thanks.
Guys, it should be obvious by now. If it's not ameritrash, zombie, sci-fi, or dungeon crawler, it's doubtful Tom will like it. That's ok, just different strokes.

Seriously Tom? You're going to try to argue that you're not favoring thematic games now? You mention it at least five times a podcast!

1.) What did you think of Vasco de Gama? I don't see it in your commented or owned list. At least Tom's played it.
2.) Registered plays of VdG as of the 9th of March: 10. It's on track for 34 plays this month at this blistering rate. ...and don't tell me people who bought this numbers-fest don't register their plays.
There's 2222 people listed owning it. 34 plays (assuming it gets that)... 1.5%. Most games over a month, get 2-3% of ownership registering a play, this late in the game. Standing the test of time, this is not.
3.) I believe Tom is a math teacher. You have to understand how this sort of thing would get boring to a math teacher.

In fairness to al, you strike all of those off the list with any flavor text...you're not left with much.

I game with a guy that has played a lot of games. A hell of a lot. His purchases these days are more towards games with new ideas, novel mechanics, interesting themes. I don't think being bored of a particularly repeated theme is something someone can be criticised for, especially when they have played so many games. I also don't think that because someone is tired of shipping in the Mediterranean they loath every game without a space theme made.
I also would have thought that unless someone enjoys the artistic styling of a themeless game, the same game with theme would always trump the game as pure mechanics. I played Biblios last night, love that game, but if someone managed to make the theme more tangible I'd be buying that version over the loose story it has now.
