If the euro market could break out of their "old world" rut and apply their usually superior mechanics to a NEW theme, they might actually sell more games. There will always be a market for euro games but honestly after seeing the 100th middle ages trader / market game it gets a bit stale. Come up with a new setting and you might actually have something fresh enough to grab people's attention.

Example: 1960: The making of a president. That is a fantastic game that has a very strong theme AND really solid mechanics. I know that there are a lot of people in europe that don't even know U.S. history and are playing the game because it has great mechanics, and they love the theme. It's a change of pace that is uncommon enough to get noticed.

Agree with the above poster - which explains many of recently themed sci-fi games. I'm not a fan of sci-fi, but I can see its appeal if for nothing else than that it's different. It seems like sci-fi games, no matter how mediocre are immediately huge hits. Make this theme sci-fi and who knows what would've happened?

I also agree with Tom - this wouldn've been great if it were a factory theme upgrading machines or something like that. Of course there are many who don't care at all about themes so to them it wouldn't matter...

I disagree on the matter of theme. I see beyond theme, and it's really how the game plays that matters to me. I usually don't like Fantasy Flight games because many of their titles are the opposite of Euros. That is, souped-up theme, and poor mechanics.

I like Old World themes, but I can understand how it may be wearing a little thin on some gamers.

Thanks Tom, great job. Yes, too many stinking choices. Would rather not play this again. Bonuses are too random...some players don't realize they are giving advantages to the player being displaced...frustrating.

I agree as well, the board looks dreadful. An interesting board with awesome graphics really adds to the enjoyment of a game - it just draws you in. For example, the game "Mystery of the Abby" looks so inviting that I have been tempted to buy it even though we don't have the required 3 people to play it. This game looks so bad I am not even going to put it on my wish list (even though the game play sounds fairly fun.)

For an abstract open-ended game, the board looks fine to me. I mean, c'mon, is a Go board or a chess board exciting to look at?

Looks like you're playing on the bayeux tapestry, game looks solid, but I cannot understand why the made it like this? So many awesome Eurogames have the most dreadfully dreary art... i would pick up none of them based on the box, just to uninspiring -_-
