The GENERAL Index Contributions Guidelines

Back to The General Index

The format for all new GENERAL Index Pages is listed at the bottom of this page. It should be copied and pasted into any new GENERAL ISSUE page that has yet to be edited for the first time. Due to the very large number of pages that need to be exactly the same, please follow this format exactly to insure that all Issue pages look uniform and maintain an organized format. Here are some guidelines to help clarify things:

Article Types

Virtually every unique article written in The GENERAL can be placed into one of the following categories:

*Designer Notes [designerid=] OR AUTHOR)
*Variant ([designerid=] OR AUTHOR)
*Discussion ([designerid=] OR AUTHOR)
*Historical ([designerid=] OR AUTHOR)
*Strategy ([designerid=] OR AUTHOR)
*Commentary ([designerid=] OR AUTHOR)
*Insert ([designerid=] OR AUTHOR)

Please use ONLY these definitions when adding your article summary. It is ok to combine them if needed, such as "Variant/Discussion".

Certain articles were repeated on a regular/semi regular basis and are defined as follows:

*Series Replay, (Player Player, Commentator)
*The Question Box ([gameid=]
*The Asylum, No #, ([designerid=] OR AUTHOR)
*RBG Data (The Readers Buyers Guide - still testing of format/layout, DO NOT ADD ANY DATA)

Authors Links

Adding the links to the Authors that are part of the BGG community is fine IF they have a Game Designer Badge/Page here at BGG already. If you do a search for an author and find them here as a user but NOT with a Designer Badge/Page, please do not link their name to the article. Instead you may italicize their name without linking it. If you want, you may also send them an email asking permission to link to their profiles, but DO NOT make a link to someone's personal profile without their express permission.

Game Links

The very unique thing about the Wiki format for The GENERAL Index is that all games that are listed in the articles can be directly linked to that game's BGG listing. Even better, every BGG game listing can have a list of the articles in The GENERAL Index that pertain to it in it's 'Description' wiki. Adding both sets of cross-links is understandably time consuming, so be sure to detail what you have added as well as what HASN'T been added when you update a page.

The Standard format for the article index on a BGG game page is:

'''The GENERAL Index Article List:'''
* [The GENERAL Vol#, No#]
**[gameid=####] – “ARTICLE TITLE” (Article Type) [designerid=] or AUTHOR
* [The GENERAL Vol#, No#]
**[gameid=####] – “ARTICLE TITLE” (Article Type) [designerid=] or AUTHOR
**[gameid=####] – “ARTICLE TITLE” (Article Type) [designerid=] or AUTHOR

There is no need to add any other details as the idea is to get people to use The GENERAL Index.

CUT AND PASTE THE FOLLOWING FORMAT THAT IS BETWEEN THE HORIZONTAL RULES - DO NOT INCLUDE THE HORIZONTAL RULES IN THE INDEX PAGES.

Contribution Suggestions

In order to keep things as clear as possible, it makes the most sense to add an Issue's article summary and then go add the individual game cross links back to that issue's page all at one sitting. If you do this, also go to the The General Index and add the tag

'''Complete'''
after that issue's link in the listing. This will enable other contributers to easily see which issues still need to be indexed.

If you are unable to do all of that in one sitting, list what needs to still be done using the following format:

(Needs: actual cover photo, article summary, game & designer links, game cross links)

Simply remove the portion(s) that you completed so other contributers can follow behind and finish the page. For example, if you have added the cover photo and article summary but not the game, designer or cross links, simply add this after the Issue's entry on The General Index:

(Needs: game & designer links, game cross links)
