Board Game: City Square Off
I am pleased to announce that my latest game, City Square Off, will be published by Gamewright in April 2011. I am extremely excited both about this game and about working with Gamewright again!

How did this game come about? Let's turn the clock way back, all the way to 2004/2005 when I had three different game designs in progress that all used the same basic pieces: One game was about roller coaster parks, another about metropolitan development, and the third an economic bidding game. Funny thing, though, City Square Off was not one of those three games!

To create all of those shapes, I had used graph paper to design them, then cut them out. As best as I can remember, one afternoon I was working on the roller coaster game, in which players acquired various rides of different shapes and built them into a theme park with lakes and forests. I was working on the building rules and how players needed to maintain paths to various rides. While trying to determine the rules and the size of the board, the idea for City Square Off just hit me. I immediately made up a prototype and began to playtest the design, realizing quickly that I had come up with a very elegant tile-placement game.

Howdy, y'all! I'm the former editor of BoardgameNews.com, and I'll be running the show here at BGG News, with assistance and support from a team of reporters, researchers and ne'er-do-wells. (I'll let you decide who falls into which category.)

BGG News will publish game announcements, industry news, previews of upcoming games, game design diaries from the designers themselves, and interviews with folks from around the game world. (For the past several weeks, I've been posting info about forthcoming games in a Nürnberg 2011 geeklist; check it out if you haven't seen it already!) Guest authors will pop up from time to time with articles that merit your attention, and I'll post link round-ups for other game-related posts to check out should you feel like venturing away from the cozy confines of BGG.

BGG News should feel familiar to those who have been on BGG for a while. The comment system is the same; you can thumb, tip or flag posts; you can subscribe to future posts through BGG's internal subscription system or through RSS; an author's avatar is visible on each post, so you can check out that person's profile or contact him or her privately.

What's new? Clicking on a name in the contributor list in the right sidebar will show all items published on this blog from that user (and not take you to that person's profile); similarly, clicking a category will show only those items tagged as belonging to that category. At the bottom of a post, you will often find linked items: a game, publisher, designer, and so on. Clicking on a linked item will bring you to that item's page on BGG. (In the future, posts included in blogs will appear on a game page, publisher's page, etc., so you'll be able to reach everything from anywhere.)

Gone Cardboard – BGN's list of forthcoming and recently released titles – will reappear on BGG down the road. Integrating Gone Cardboard with BGG involves more trickery and work than what I did on BGN, but thankfully people far more experienced with site design than me will be figuring out how to make everything function. In other words, when Gone Cardboard does reappear, it will work as intended!

Designer diaries, game previews and other articles previously published on Boardgame News – whether on the first or second version of that site – will be republished in BGG News in the future, making that material available once again.

Mayfair's Automobile Makes It Off the Factory Floor

Mayfair Games has announced that its version of Martin Wallace's Automobile – first released by Wallace's own Warfrog Games through its Treefrog imprint – has finally arrived in house and will soon begin shipping to North American distributors. Automobile has a February 17, 2011 street date in North America, so don't expect to see it on store shelves before then.

Chickens, Princesses and Ass Bombs – Zoch's Line-Up for Q1/Q2 2011

German publisher Zoch Verlag has released basic info on its line-up for the first half of 2011. Here's the rundown on what you'll see:

Arschbombe from the design team of Bernhard Lach and Uwe Rapp. Arschbombe is both exactly what it sounds like and something completely different as "Arschbombe" is the German word for "cannonball" – that is, someone tucking in a ball and jumping into a swimming pool. In this card game, players will have swimmers jump from their hand into a swimming pool comprised of cards, with experienced divers trying to land in quiet waters away from others while toughs will be aiming to soak others with their "ass bombs". (2-4 players, 8+, 20 minutes, English/German/French)

Auf die Birne from Manfred Reindl. In this counting, memory and reaction game, cards from a common deck are laid out, with more and more pears, apples and maggots (yum!) being piled up. Once a harvest card appears and eleven fruits of the same type or eleven maggots have been laid out, the players need to know how many objects of the desired type are out there. Collect the harvest card if you're correct, and grab more than anyone else to win the game. (2-5 players, 7+, 15-20 minutes, English/German/French/Italian)

Avanti from Heinz Meister. Players live on the road, moving from event to event to help supply them with supplies and make money. (2-5 players, 10+, 45-60 minutes, English/German/French/Dutch/Spanish)

Crossboule from Mark Calin Caliman. This take on bocce, aka lawn bowling, gives players soft, flexible balls that will be kind to materials within your house, allowing for indoor games on the stairs, a bookcase or wherever else you might think to throw the target ball. Throw the right way, and you can earn bonus points; whoever wins two sets of 11 points first wins the game. (2+ players, 6+, English/German/French)

Da ist der Wurm drin from Carmen Kleinert. In this dice game, players dig their worms through the neighbor's garden, trying to reach the flower and strawberry beds that await. (2-4 players, 4+, 15-20 minutes, English/German/French)

Zicke Zacke from Marek Zoschi with Doris Matthäus providing the charming illustrations. All the familiar Zoch critters are hiding behind a wooden fence, a fence comprised of cards, with only parts of their bodies being visible. If you can slap the animal's home – a card sitting in front of one of the players – before anyone else, you claim the animal. (2-5 players, 4+, 15-20 minutes, English/German)

Zozzle Junior from Elena Fyrogeni. Game play in these four titles is the same as in Zoch's Zozzle line from 2010. To start the game, place the 45 tiles face down in a central playing area. On a turn, reveal two tiles; if they match, place one of the tiles into your playing area, return the other tile, then take another turn. If they don't match, place them both face down. The first player to assemble a 3x3 image of tiles wins the game. Instead of animals, these four titles show cartoon images of princesses, pirates and more. (2-4 players, 4+, 15-20 minutes, English/German/French/Italian)

Teuber Brings Catan to Cards Once Again

In 2010, designer Klaus Teuber overhauled the two-player Catan card game with the release of The Rivals for Catan – released in Germany as Die Fürsten von Catan – and in 2011 Teuber and Mayfair Games present a new multi-player card game set in the Catan universe: The Struggle for Catan.

As in the original The Settlers of Catan board game, players need to manage their resources in order to build settlements, roads, cities, city improvements and knights, all of which grant victory points or special abilities. Control of roads and knights can change hands during the game, so don't assume that what's yours will stay yours. City improvements are expensive, but they bring you additional VPs and other bonuses, so strive to spiff up your cities! The first player to have ten VPs wins the game.

The Struggle for Catan is for 2-4 players, ages 10 and up, with a playing time of 45-60 minutes and a $15 price tag. The game is scheduled for a May 19, 2011 release from Mayfair Games.
