Board Gems

Posts and videos about those old gems! Games that aren't talked about much any more. Maybe they didn't get that well known, maybe their ratings aren't very high — for whatever reason, they're on their way to being forgotten with all those shiny new games coming out. But these games are still great and haven't been fired by newer releases. Remember, games don't stop being good just because newer games come along! Posts by Darryl Boone, owner of board game restaurant Pizzeria Ludica in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Hey, just wanted to let y'all know that some friends and I are auctioning off a TONNE of games on BGG. It's like 175 games.

We're shipping from Vancouver, BC, Canada, to pretty much anywhere. Shipping is CRAZY expensive to pretty much everywhere, which is why we wanted to put together a big auction. If you want and win multiple items, then the cost of shipping per item becomes somewhat reasonable.

The auction ends February 1st. Have a look!

Two Rough Cuts videos in a row?! 2022 is off to a weird start. Well, after this one, I probably won't do another Rough Cuts for a while.

But I wanted to cover three games that are 20 years old this year! Emerald, Trias and Wooly Wars (AKA Wooly Bully) are all from 2002. They're worth talking about, but are they worth playing? We'll see!

00:58 Emerald
11:30 Trias
22:43 Wooly Wars

The video is set to go live Thursday, January 13th at 00:15 PST (08:15 UTC, I believe). It's set as a premiere, and barring emergency I will be on Youtube at that time to chat with viewers. If you're around at that time, join me for a chat!

My next video will probably be on Cargo Noir. After that, maybe either Thurn and Taxis or Tower of Babel!

It's a Rough Cuts video, in which I briefly go over three games I probably wasn't going to do full videos on anytime soon. With the last game I covered a Kramer & Kiesling joint, I thought I'd cover three more K&K games, two of which were requested, that share some DNA with their Mask Trilogy of action-point games.

Although I'm covering it as a Rough Cut now, I reserve the right to cover Torres in more detail as a future Board Gem!

The next video I post on the 13th will also likely be a Rough Cuts. Now that it's 2022, I'd like to cover a few 20-year-old games, from 2002, that were requested — Emerald, Trias and Wooly Wars. Then I probably won't do another Rough Cuts for a while.

Verflixxt, also known in English as That's Life, is a simple family game from the famed design duo of Wolfgang Kramer and Michael Kiesling. Roll-and-move — but you have multiple pawns and neutral guards you can choose to move on your turn. Players navigate the snake-like path of scoring tiles; move off of a tile you were alone on, collect it. You want to collect good ones and avoid bad ones, of course, but easier said than done! And if you do get a really bad one, a lucky tile can turn bad into good.

The original was published in 2005 by Ravensburger and had a couple of expansions not easily available in English-speaking markets. Amigo put out a great new version in 2020. In between, TMG released the similar Ghosts of the Moor, which is a poor shadow of its ancestor, in my opinion.

BG Gibber are talking-head videos in which my head talks. Well, rants, in some places. It's a ranting-head video, and not for everyone. You could watch, but your life may be quantifiably better just skipping this vid, or just listening instead of watching. Put me on while you do chores around your home, or if you're like my wife, as an aid to help you sleep.

Two famous hidden movement "Scotland Yard"-type games are Letters from Whitechapel and Whitehall Mystery. Garibaldi is a forgotten prequel of sorts from one of the designers, Gabriele Mari. One player is Giuseppe Garibaldi, famed Italian hero, trying in 1849 to escape the Romagna area with his dying wife Anita while avoiding Austrian patrols.

Letters from Whitechapel was effectively fired by Whitehall Mystery, but this is actually my favourite of them all. Tense and thematic, you can tell it was a labour of love and respect for the setting from the Italian designer and publisher Nexus.

The game was later re-vamped to take place in the Scotland Yard Cinematic Universe™, as Mister X. I haven't played Mister X, so can't talk much about the differences, but I give it the ol' college try.

(Apologies to the designer for pronouncing his name wrong. I made notes before recording but made a typo that I then spoke out loud. Sorry!)

Despite what the name may imply, Las Vegas (by Rüdiger Dorn and Alea) isn't a gambling game. Players roll dice and commit them to one of six spots that have money dealt to them. The player with the most dice gets first crack at the cash, but only if they're not tied! Tied players have their dice removed and only whoever's left will get the winnings.

Las Vegas was nominated for the Spiel des Jahres in 2012, losing out to Kingdom Builder. It's not a hidden gem, and there have been numerous printings, most recently Las Vegas Royale in 2019. I talk about the differences between it and the original, and a bit about the now-rare expansion, Boulevard.

In The Estates, players are building towers made up of coloured cubes. Everything's up for auction: those coloured cubes (the first winner of a colour owns that colour for the whole game), roofs, multipliers and more. In the end, only two of the three rows of buildings in The Estates will score points for their owners, but owners of the buildings in the third row will lose points! The Estates is simple to learn and quick-playing — but it is oh-so-brutal.

The Estates, by designer Klaus Zoch (yes, that Zoch), was originally published as Neue Heimat by Chili, his boutique direct-to-consumer publishing company. This 2018 version by Capstone is much more readily available!

The classic Knizia dice game Heckmeck am Bratwurmeck, known in English as Pickomino (sometimes stylised Pick-omino). A grill of yummy bratwurms are available and players try to collect as many as they can by rolling a high sum on their dice. After each roll, set aside a new value, but if you ever can't — or you aren't able to set aside any worms — you'll go bust! Add some light-hearted stealing, and you have an easy-going, super-swingy family dice game that can be enjoyed at almost any age.
