Gaming, painting, crafting and jolly good times!

As the name hints expect; random boring gaming related content, pictures of horrible painting / terrain crafting, AARs (with pictures hopefully), impressions of the games I own and very irregular (hopefully monthlyish) updates. Hopefully.

Following the tracks, our fearless rangers found themselves in a patch of forest covered in webs. Hiro Steelwhiskers spotted one of the webbed cocoons still moving. There might be survivors, no time to waste!

The terrains was set up as pictured below. There's 5 spiders, inspired by the challenging version, instead of 3 more spiders there was 2 zombies and a rat. Mostly because I only had 8 spider models and I didn't want to run out if more spawns. The white splotches are web cocoons.

From gallery of CthulhuStoleXmas
One zombie hides behind the vegetation mid-right. The rat is behind a tree mid-left. Randomized spiders both ended up on the left side.

I think its obvious there are some SPOILERS here for Rangers of Shadowdeep. If you don't want to know anything, stop reading now!

You can check the minis and a little info from this post.
Partaking in these adventures we have:
-Hiro Steelwhiskers with a companion wolf (warhound) Whitefang and archer Lilac Silverarrow
-Raganhar Bluecloak the dwarf and his companion savage Bargh
-the witch Zahar of Shadowdell with her trusty hound Conna (or is it Konna, I can't tell from my sister's handwriting) and Ben the guardsman

I haven't decided on the format for these yet. I need to do this thing now, as the game was played 2-3 weeks ago and the longer it takes the more fuzzier the memories get. I think I'll try for a mixed AAR narrative approach. Well, maybe a little less narrative now that some time has passed since we played.

For rules, scenario explanation etc. you're gonna have to check another source. I recommend Guerrilla Miniature Games RoSD Let's play series.

Okay. A little hiatus in the updates. I've been mostly a) grinding out terrain for RoSD b) playing DD5e c) Playing RoSD, SoN and Claustrophobia d) painting various things (which will be featured here eventually). All in all, I haven't played a ton. Getting back on the horse though. I envisioned this as a monthly blog and got a little excited in the start.. So hopefully the updates will be more or less regular 1-2 times a month in the future (yeah, right).

But, we should get on with the show!

Not a lot of gaming happening in the last two weeks (or is it four already?). Mostly due to shitty shifts at work an grinding out the models needed for Rangers of Shadow Deep: Deluxe Edition. These are 99% done and varnished. Only thing left is to paint the edges of the bases black. And probably something else I've forgotten. Ignorance is bliss! But here we go:

There's 3 rangers to come; one for me, one for my gf and one for my sis. There's also some houserules to choosing skills and getting stats. For skills I wanted more variance, so you could exchange 2 skill points for the ability to make one skill add +2 (for a total of +2 and four +1 / point). I wanted some more character to the stats too, so we decided you could -1 something to add a +1 to something else (no going over the +1 limit in the start though (except for hp). I plan to keep the stat ceiling untouched though.

Heya, it's me Imoen!
(I just couldn't resist after writing a very generic "hi"!. Just thinking about that line still makes me want to commit murder )

So I haven't posted in a while, but I've been doing 'stuff'. Some painting, gaming and buying. Buying is mostly for Rangers of Shadow Deep: Deluxe Edition which is coming "soon" (well not really soon). My sis and gf created their rangers and are excited to play. I still have to do mine, paint and do a few terrain pieces for the first scenario and then it's on! So a month if I'm lucky!

But there's ground to cover, so lets get down to work...

Time to fight again! This time it's scenario 3...

You can expect a little change in the format of these AAR as I'm trying to find something that I feel comfortable with and something that is easy to follow. It seems I need to think about the pictures a little bit more. I don't want to take several from 1 turn, but the camera on my phone isn't good enough to take a big 6 tile pic it seems.

Knock knock...
The Rangers discovered clues that the prisoners were taken to a large cave complex. They now must fight their way to the entrance, but a new threat, a huge Reef Breaker, is protecting the sacred caves.

The mission for Rangers: Cut through Deep One defenses to secure a way into the cave (be the only one to have units there). If they win, they can use deployment zone B in the next scenario (which seems to save 1-1,5 turns worth of movement).
Extras: Blow up the cave entrance during the scenario (reward: D.O. cannot use cave entrance in scenario 4)

The mission for Deep Ones: Don't let the Rangers win (very original again). Literally the mission dictates that D.O. win if they "also have a unit in the cave". Only Garth can go into the cave, so that would mean don't lose Garth and have him in the cave...? Uh, ok I guess. If they win, Rangers use deployment zone A in the next scenario.
No extras for the Derp Ones.

The first painted hero from Cthulhu: Death May Die. After painting some low quality models I really enjoyed this one. Painted mostly with contrast paints, took me about 2 hours or so. I love the contrast paints as they take away the need to paint multiple layers in many places.

From gallery of CthulhuStoleXmas

This guy must be color blind or needs fashion advisor fast!

-Hat and tie is Blood Angels Red contrast paint
-Shirt Volupus Pink cp with Vallejo game color Squid Pink on top
-Suit Aggaros Dunes cp with a thin layer of Vallejo gc Plague Brown
-Shoes and suitcase is Snakebite Leather cp with Vgc Beasty Brown (I couldn't get even layer on flat surface with cp)
-Gun is a thin layer of Black Templar cp with a layer of black wash
-Skin is 2 layers of Gulliman Flesh with a 3rd layer in where I wanted a darker areas, beard and hair is Spacewolf Grey cp

I also painted Sister Beth, as I decided to work on the Core Box first. I didn't really like the face, it lacked definition to take cp properly to show detail. Took me around 1,5 hours max, probably a little less.

From gallery of CthulhuStoleXmas

-Robes are 2 layers of Spacewolf Grey with a black wash, white areas are Vgc Off White with a ~50% dilluted black wash in the recesses (mostly seen on the backside)
-All brown parts are Snakebite Leather cp, gun is washed with brown wash
-weapons are Spacewolf Grey with black wash on top and slightly drybrushed with Vgc Gunmetal
-Necklace/cross is Vgc silver and gold with a black wash

In other news the next SoN scenario has been played and I'm in the middle of writing it. It might take a while though as it was bigger than I expected.

O boy!
So I used to play 40k. Around when I was 18-28 or something like that. I think I've played it once after that, took a 6h road trip with 2 friends to visit a 3rd one and had a game then.
I think went 50/50 with a starterbox that had marines and orks (the single pose ones), but it didn't really catch on then. I started with Tau in 3rd (don't quote me on any editions), had some marines and things from here and there. Don't remember when I got into IG (I think it was when the plastic cadian/catatchan sets were released), and build a small traitor guard force. That's the only one that has stayed with all the trades and sales through the years, all the other 40k stuff I've let go. I got sick of the constant release of codexes (codii?) and editions. It seems GW has gotten their act together a bit, but buying into big army games is a time of the past for me (knock on wood). I might dip into a model or two if opportunity rises and I feel like it, but for now no WHFB or WH40k for me.

Not so much playing in the last few days, so it's a good time to start showing the backlog of painting.

I've painted the 7th Continent adventurers as we went. They've all seen action at least once. To make the game completely painted, I'd still have to do the transports that came with WGUMCD, but once that's done the whole game is done! Think everyone who likes minis in their games and paint (or try to) know that it's time to celebrate when your game is 100% (even if it has like 2 pieces to paint).

From gallery of CthulhuStoleXmas

White undercoat, painted with mostly contrast paints and some touch-ups with normal paints. I'm pretty happy with the tabletop quality, doesn't look very nice from up close but it looks fine while playing. I went mostly with the game's color schemes with some "close enough"s.

I hope the game holds it's appeal until the end. I'm playing with a friend and we're on 5th curse (chest one) with only 1 death (in the maze).

Time for scenario 2!

The mission for Rangers: Secure the evidence needed for finding prisoners. Have the only unit occupying a hut to search it and find the green 4 to win (4 huts to search).

The mission for Deep Ones: F'tagn meg pl'ui HODOR! (don't let the Rangers win).

Campaign extra: Garth may (or may not deploy) in the cave during the following mission (depending on the winner). Rangers can make a search check when they fail to find the objective in the hut, if successful they get draw a trait and trade it during the following scenarios.
