work in progress around wishlist and collection

With Christmas, birthday (last Saturday), some old outstanding purchases that finally got delivered and a couple of little gifts I wanted to give to myself, my shelf is exploding. Funny, because my 2022 goal should be to reduce purchases...

The new joiners are as follows:

Maracaibo: Christmas (through my girlfriend (big thank)) brought this game of Alex Pfister, one of my favorite designer. I am very intrigued by the campaign but all the game seems to be what I really like.

Skulls of Sedlec: After reading a blog, I have seen a quick video and I thought it could be an interesting filler. Hope it can have the same success at home like Port Royal and Claim, our two favorite fillers.

Schotten Totten: I got a recommendation in my blog for this classic of Knizia. It took over Odin's Ravens (Second Edition) in my wishlist. Already tried and really happy with its depth. Great game in a small box.

It's a Wonderful Kingdom: The Kickstarter has finally landed at home. In sleeving the cards, I have been impressed by their artwork. I read some negative comments about the game due to comparison with It's a Wonderful world. Not sure if these comparisons are fair as it is a different game and not just a 2P version of the IaWW.

Imperial Settlers: It was the game I wanted to buy when I started the hobby. I found a good offer in the second hand market and I could not resist. I already had a couple of plays. No a tier 1 game for me but definitely a good one.

Viticulture: Tuscany Essential Edition: I placed my order in November 2020... finally, this week I got it... the order included Obsession and its expansions, and Cascadia which will replace Calico in my collection.

Scythe: Girlfriend came with another nice surprise for my birthday. High expectations with this game.

Menara: Kids love Jenga but I see that are too comfortable with that game. So I think it is the time to try something a little bit more complicated.

Loopin' Louie: not a big fan of this game but one of the kid really insisted for having it... Then, let's have some flights with Louie...

Ark Nova: I fell for the hype for a potential BGG top-ten game. It looks similar to Terraforming Mars, a game I would play everyday. No idea when I will receive it though, sold out everywhere.

Fantasy Realms: Another game I have no clue when it will be delivered. Sincerely this is surprising as it is not a new game but you cannot easily find it.

Summoner Wars (Second Edition): I ordered this in September but delivery has been delayed three times.... Last weekend, I found the game in a shop close to where I live... and got it there. Sincerely, I start getting annoyed by some sellers that don't give you the correct availability. I can understand a minor delay but 6 months when they had said it would have been available in a couple of weeks can get frustrating.

Port Royal: Big Box: One of my favourite filler. Part of the first order of Summoner Wars. I should get it in the next days. Cant wait to see the new artwork. YARRR!!! arrrh

Luckily if the shelf grows, at least my wishlist gets more or less emptier:

Great Western Trail (Second Edition) and probably the KS of La Granja: Deluxe Master Set are basically a buy: for the first one I get sometimes tempted to buy the old version given the high discount... for the latter, I just want to get more information once the KS has been launched but I suppose I will back the project.

The LOOP: It seems to be a fun coop with a good playtime (1 hour) for 2 players. I still need to see some videos and read some opinions to get a better idea of this game.NE

Mantis Falls: Interesting 2 player game with some bluffing. I have not seen many games like this for 2P as usually they require a bigger group of people. This could be extremely interesting.N

Dune: Imperium: I am intrigued by the mix of mechanics. My concern is that you need to play with an automa in 2 players... So not ideal for what I target.E

This is it for the moment.

I am sure that in a couple of months (maybe even weeks) there will be MANY new entries in my wishlist. At the end, discovery and dream of new games is one of the best part of the hobby, without wishes it would get more boring

Now, I have to think what game I will learn next... the list is big... any suggestions where to start from?

My first 500 Plays !

During the beginning of the pandemic, I started looking into board games and after a good due diligence that brought me on BGG, I bought and received my first game in May 2020: Agricola. Not sure if it was the best game to start with as rules are quite complicated (cards too as I bought it in German, language where my skills are still so and so) but it was so immersive and interesting that I got completely hooked. I could not resist to buy immediately another “couple” of games reaching the current number of 56 games (plus some to be delivered soon).

I really got into the new hobby and last weekend I achieved my 500 play.

To celebrate my achievement, I want to mention some games that meant something in this period.

Agricola (Revised Edition)

You never forget your first love. Actually, still one of my favourite games. I really enjoy the pressure that it creates around the food and how you build step by step your plan around your farm.

Grand Austria Hotel

My first second-hand purchase. Looking for two players games, I got very intrigued by Grand Austria Hotel. The game was out of production and I was late for the KS. Nevertheless, I found someone in the UK through BGG who sold me the game for a decent price. Once received the box, I had a nice surprise as the seller included in the box printed cards and rules for a solo variant. Danke

Wingspan

It took me several months before convincing myself to buy Wingspan. I am definitely not a bird enthusiast and was concerned about the theme. Nevertheless, curiosity won as everyone spoke about this game and … I bought it. Wise decision as it got one of the most played games at home.

The Quacks of Quedlinburg

My first review or better opinions on BGG. I say opinions because I don’t want to write how the game works as there are many videos that do it better than I could write. Nevertheless, I think opinions are personal and the more you read, the better you get an idea of a game. They can really help you with taking a decision. This is what I do before buying a game and I wanted to support other people like me with my writings. In the end, I have included this opinion in a Geeklist where I add new games from time to time.

Gloomhaven

Once you get into the hobby and start reading BGG, you get extremely curious about the number 1 of the ranking. This was the case for me but at the same time, I also thought “ that price for a board game?”. So on the way to make a move, my girlfriend was just faster and gave it to me for Christmas… the number 1 in my collection

Let’s see where my journey will bring me with the next 500 plays

A month of board games - December 2021

December was a month where I had mostly solo. Unfortunately, my usual game partner (girlfriend) was busy with planning Christmas and solo was almost the only option to play. I also took the chance to revisit my 2021 and I wanted give me my awards. For the occasion, I created a geeklist with my 2021 awards.

Monthly statistic

Total plays: 37. Five of them were kid games and 21 solo.
Total different games played: 21 New games played: 4
New expansions played: 1

Collection statistic

H Index: 12 (no change)
Games in collection: 64 (+4, 5 purchases and 1 sale)
Games in my shelf of shame: 15 games (+1)
Total number of expansions: 30 (no changes)
Expansions in the shelf of shame: 18 (-1)

Board Game: Calico
Board Game: Aeon's End
Board Game: Coconuts
Board Game: Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion
Board Game: Brass: Birmingham
Board Game: Bullet♥︎
Board Game: Mandala
Board Game: Meadow
Board Game: Star Realms
Board Game: Wingspan
Board Game: Agricola: All Creatures Big and Small – The Big Box
Board Game: Claim
Board Game: Codenames: Duet
Board Game: Dragomino
Board Game: Everdell
Board Game: Istanbul: Big Box
Board Game: Jenga
Board Game: Marvel Champions: The Card Game
Board Game: Terraforming Mars
Board Game: Tetrarchia
Board Game: The Isle of Cats

Calico x5

I am having fun through the different solo scenarios and I wait to try this game with 2 players. Next month, I should finally get Cascadia and I am curious to compare the two of them.

Aeon's End x3 NEW!

It took me three game to get hooked by this game. After the first play, I thought okeisch, fun but … second game same feeling. Third play, I really enjoyed it and cant wait for new sessions. Rules are not too complicated and the game is challenging enough with the different nemesis. Big risk here bagbag The game can be expanded through some expansions... my wallet is already worried...

From gallery of pultrak

Coconuts x3

Kids love it but I have to say I have tons of fun with Coconuts as well. Game is very simple, throw coconuts into glasses but it is simply hilarious. I wanted to make a gift for my brother's family with this game but unfortunately, I could not find it in the market. Shame because every kid will love it.

From gallery of pultrak

Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion x3

I am stuck at scenario 4 … I was very close to win with my last attempt but it was not enough, some unlucky attack modifiers and game was over .

Brass: Birmingham x2 NEW!

I finally took the time to learn it and had my first solo with the Mautoma variant. Despite its few rules, it is not easy. Same for the Mautoma variant that was quite tough to understand and then, to manage for the first time. So my experience got somewhat heavy although I can easily say that Brass Birmingham is going to be one of my favourite games. I cant wait to have a multi-player experience.

Bullet♥︎ x2 NEW!

I only played the score attack mode for one player and found it quite interesting. Curious to explore all other modes of the game particularly the boss challenges. So too early for an opinion.

Mandala x2

I was thinking to sell it as we had not played Mandala for a while. Luckily, we had a couple of plays in December and we really enjoyed them. Short and simple with a good level of depth, Mandala is a great game and will get the attention that it deserves in the next months.

Meadow x2

Meadow is a solid game but it gets too thinky for something that should be a relaxing game. You must pay attention to every move you do as they can change your engine. A mistake and you might loose the game. The result is that the game gets too slow. Besides that, I feel it too loose in two players while with more players, AP gets a real problem. The solo is not too challenging, I won my first two plays easily. Not for me, so it is going to be my first game to be culled in 2022.

From gallery of pultrak

Star Realms x2 NEW!

We wanted to try this game since summer. Finally, the time came: Fast and easy, Star Realms is real fun with its goal to build a proper space arsenal with ships and bases to defeat your opponent. Definitely, a new filler to get included into our rotation.

Wingspan x2

We had our last two plays with Wingspan: European Expansion. We decided to go back to the normal game which we found better. Soon it will be time to give a try to Wingspan: Oceania Expansion.

Agricola: All Creatures Big and Small – The Big Box

The game has a big number of tiles that you can select for each play. Thus, each game will be somewhat different. It will take time to explore all of them. For a 30 minute game I think it is a good option but Agricola is definitely from another planet.

From gallery of pultrak

Claim

Classic filler at home, a secure option when we want a game that lasts no more than 15 minutes. I am tempted to buy some new expansions to add new factions.

Codenames: Duet

After eight attempts (!!!), we finally won for our first time. Quite proud of our result but I have to admit we were somewhat lucky to find an easy clue that covered four different words. That was a move of the best James Bond.

Dragomino

Kids saw me playing Kingdomino on BGA and got inspired to get on the table Dragomino. This is the kid game of the year for me. Can’t recommend enough.

Everdell

Tried the solo mode and had fun, although the game is a blast with more players. I would like to play more to Everdell before getting all expansions through the KS as I still have a lot to discover in its magic world.

Istanbul: Big Box

Left in the shelf for a long time, it got finally on the table again. Istanbul is an easy game but creates very fun and tense race to be the first player to get the rubies. Furthermore, its modular board always creates different games. Why does not get too much on the table? The main reason is the setup that takes a bit too long: We are talking about 10 minutes for a game that lasts around 40 minutes. I am trying to see if there are ways to reduce the time with some organization so that my willingness to play gets higher. It is really a great game so it is a shame if it collects dust in the Kallax.

From gallery of pultrak

Jenga

Kids understood how to play and games are over whenever there are no moves available. In any case, they like the suspense whenever someone takes and adds a block to the tower. I start thinking if I need to find a more sophisticated Jenga game like Menara or go to something like Flick 'em Up!.

Marvel Champions: The Card Game

Only once on the table in December, this was a surprise.

Terraforming Mars

I confirmed my positive impressions around the solo game through a new play with Terraforming Mars: Hellas & Elysium. Despite my failure, I really enjoyed my game but the expansion shines more with multi-player games where you have the different awards and achievements.

Tetrarchia

I am still in the phase of exploring this little game which reminds me Pandemic. It is a good game but... is not getting too much attention so far.

The Isle of Cats

It is funny to see how some games don’t get to the table for a while but once back, you love them. This was the example with the Isle of Cats: Our last play was in summer...
This is the disadvantage to have too many games….

The game of the month

With my girlfriend, I had a very intense game with the Isle of Cats where she won with the tiebreaker (one of the first times I loose with tiebreakers with her...). Cant wait for the KS to collect more cats

From gallery of pultrak

My online gaming

Diamant is getting one of my favorite multi-player push your luck games. It has extremely simple rules but the timing of your choices make the difference.

Troyes: just started a week ago playing this Euro game and I completely love it. Troyes is the first game that I try on BGA and then, I buy it. My copy will be here next week and I look forward to playing it with my girlfriend.

Goals for January

I will get some games next months for old orders, so hope I will have the time to try at least a couple of them, otherwise my shelf of shame will be again in the 20s...

Another year has gone. Star Realms was the last game I played in 2021. And you? what was your last game of 2021?

Happy new year !!!

my goals for 2022

With the approaching end of the year, people talk about challenges and goals for 2022. This is an hobby for me so I take it very spontaneously but I'd like to join the crowd and mention a couple of goals I want to pursue next year as well.

First of all, I'd like to be more focused on my collection. I finished the year with another multi-game order: I wanted to buy the new edition of The Quest for El Dorado and I could only find it in a shop in Finland. Delivery costs were quite high so I took the chance to add a couple on games to make my order "economically efficient". The games are:

Troyes, game I have started looking into it recently and seems to have everything I like: different winning pattern, player interaction and a good level of challenge. It is on BGA but usually I prefer the live experience for this kind of games;

The Fox in the Forest Duet: I had bought it at the end of 2019 but my order was still outstanding till a month ago when I decided to cancel it: After seeing the availability, I could not resist the temptation to get it . A coop trick-taking game for 2P makes me very curious.

So, I think I built a decent collection in the last 18 months and I think it should be time to enjoy it before adding some new additions.

Furthermore, with my coming orders, my shelf of shame will go above 20 games... far too many.

Obviously I give myself some bonuses, for instance the interesting KS of La Granja: Deluxe Master Set could be one of them, together with Great Western Trail (Second Edition), which I have not bought yet just because it is not available in Europe.

My second goal is quite easy: clearing my shelf of shame or at least going into single digit. I cannot see some great games like Robinson Crusoe: Adventures on the Cursed Island or Gaia Project in my shelf for longer than a year without having had a single play.... it is such a shame!

My third goal is to cull some games. I see in my collection no more than 50 games without including kid games and expansions. With all my outstanding purchases, I am at 57...

So, I will have to say goodbye to some of them. A first strong candidate is Meadow. Game is great but I think it is too AP prone for me and above all for my girlfriend, who really does not like it. No need to keep something at home that does not get played.

Finally, my last goal is to find a group in my area where to play from time to time maybe some more complex game like for instance Kanban EV or The Gallerist and some multi player games. I miss the time before covid with Secret Hitler...

Let's hope that 2022 brings back things to normality.

And you, any interesting goals?

In any case, wish everyone an happy and playful 2022

A month of board games - November

As expected, I had less chances to play in November. Going back to the office has reduced the time available and increased the tiredness. Thus, fillers stood out during the month.

I did not find any good deals during Black Friday so the collection got only enriched by an expansion (Concordia: Solitaria) which I bought in October. On the other end, I sold two games: Conspiracy: Abyss Universe and Outfoxed!. The first one is a great game but it works too well on BGA and I prefer to play there. Outfoxed never clicked to the kids.

Monthly statistic

Total play: 40. 8 of them were kid games and 11 solo.
Total different games played: 22
New games played: 3
New expansions played: 1

Collection statistic

H Index: 12 (+1)
Games in collection: 60 (-2)
Games in my shelf of shame: 14 games (-3)
Total number of expansions: 30 (+1)
Expansions in the shelf of shame: 19 (0)

Board Game: Jenga
Board Game: Ohanami
Board Game: Tetrarchia
Board Game: Watergate
Board Game: Wingspan
Board Game: Agricola: All Creatures Big and Small – The Big Box
Board Game: Calico
Board Game: Claim
Board Game: Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion
Board Game: It's a Wonderful World
Board Game: Catan Junior
Board Game: Concept Kids: Animals
Board Game: Escape: The Curse of the Temple
Board Game: Marvel Champions: The Card Game
Board Game: Pandemic
Board Game: Port Royal
Board Game: Terraforming Mars
Board Game: The Castles of Burgundy
Board Game: Ticket to Ride: Europe
Board Game: Under Falling Skies
Board Game: Viticulture Essential Edition
Board Game: Zombie Kidz Evolution

Jenga x5

An old game that is loved by the kids. They always have fun and ask for a play after the other. Jenga reminds me my school time, actually the times I played hookie from school and we went to a bar with only this game... arrrh

Ohanami x4

The filler of the moment at home. We like its simplicity and the suspense in any games given that they are always very tight. Game and rules are nothing special but in the end, it is just fun, which is what matters.

Tetrarchia x3 NEW!

I played 3 times and easily won at middle difficulty levels. The base game has 81 combinations of different challenges so it can easily be leveled up. Besides that, there are other scenarios in the box and many things to try and discover. With its very fast set up and limited space requirements, Tetrarchia might be my ideal solo option in the coming months.

Watergate x3 NEW!

After longer than 6 months, we finally tried it. I start saying that the rulebook that describes the Watergate scandal and its different involved people included in the game is a plus. I am a lover of historical novels that combine the plot with historical events. Obviously, I found extremely interesting to find a game like this and hope to get others in the future. About the game itself, my first feelings have been more than positive. The gameplay is easy and the rulebook very clear. The asymmetrical characters with their specific cards provide very tense head-to-head play with plenty of interaction. After three plays, we have found it easier to play as the editor but we definitely need more games to see if this is true.

From gallery of pultrak

Wingspan x3

Although this is not my game as my girlfriend wins almost all the time, Wingspan is always a pleasure to play. We had several plays with Wingspan: European Expansion: My preference is toward the original game as I find it more linear and more balanced. I also think that the expansion does not add too much interaction, one of the items more mentioned in its comments. I am ready to move to Wingspan: Oceania Expansion and I expect big changes in the gameplay, hopefully positive changes.

Agricola: All Creatures Big and Small x2 NEW!

Full of dust after a year in the shelf of shame, this simplified version of Agricola (Revised Edition) went to the table. It is a much more streamlined version of its most famous brother without its pressure and tension. The strategy is focused on breeding the different animals: No food and no grain. After the first play, I was somewhat skeptical but my opinion improved with the second play. Although far from the depth of Agricola, first impressions have been quite positive and it seems to be a very good short option for an easygoing evening. With the deluxe box there are several buildings that need to be discovered and might change the strategy from play to play.

Calico x2

I really like the Calico's kind of solo based on scenarios. With 10 different challenges, this game has been keeping me busy for a while.

Claim x2

Overtaken by Ohanami as the "filler of the moment at Pultraks", we did not play too much Claim this month. I think after 4 months with more than 20 plays, a little break is normal.

From gallery of pultrak

Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion x2

The campaign is getting more complicated and above all each scenario requires much more time. Thus, it gets really difficult to find time to continue the campaign with regular sessions. Shame because time flies while you are in the dungeons.

It's a Wonderful World x2

One last scenario left to finish the solo campaign. Then, I will do everything again from level 1, trying to get the gold medals. Definitely a good solo with a very fast set up. Shame, there are only 6 scenarios... which go really fast.

Catan: Junior

Kids like this game somewhat, I do not. I find it boring. I just hope it could be a good gateway for more interesting titles....

Concept Kids: Animals

Kids love to give hints and guess animals with this very instructive game. We played with the more complicated animals... and it was a challenge for everyone, not only for the kids.

Escape: The Curse of the Temple

Finally, we could escape from the temple but... what a tension. Every gong of the bell creates panic. You keep running (...throwing dices) till the last countdown where you just hope to get the right die combination... and get out of the temple.
Unique game in my collection, it is like being in an Indiana Jones' movie .

Marvel Champions: The Card Game

Tried two new heroes against Rhino and ended up with an easy win. I would like to spend some more time in building and trying new decks which is the funniest part around this Marvel gem but the problem is always the same... Time.

Pandemic

I probably got the fastest defeat ever. Everything worked perfectly against me and I could not stop the viruses. I keep getting surprised by Pandemic as every game is always tense and fun.

Port Royal

Another filler that is having a break in our rotation. I am sure that it will shine again soon as this is a great game.

Terraforming Mars

I had my first solo and I really loved it. I played several times to TM and I always like how you start from nothing, then, you build your engine and see your progresses in terraforming the planet. As a solo, you have even a bigger sense of accomplishment. I was surprised to see that I could win the game at my first attempt. This is my biggest concern as I don't like too much solo where I play against my best result: I have fear to get bored after 2-3 other solo plays.

From gallery of pultrak

The Castles of Burgundy

I played it a lot on BGA in November but playing CoB on the table is much better as I have a better overview on what is happening. In any case, BoB never disappoints me.

Ticket to Ride: Europe

My girlfriend and I played to this classic again to get confident with its rules. Next time, we will definitely use our smaller Swiss map as a 2P game gets extremely loose with the European map.

From gallery of pultrak

Under Falling Skies

I played together with the kids and despite the defeat, it was fun. An experience I will try again with other solo games.

Viticulture Essential Edition

I lost for the first time with my girlfriend. We played Viticulture: Visit from the Rhine Valley: Besides being an attempt to excuse my defeat, the importance of getting good cards with the expansion seems to be higher given that the main strategy is around producing and selling wine. In the normal game, the luck factor is somewhat mitigated by the greater variety of strategies that can be pursued. Nevertheless, the experience of this game is always positive and hope to have a revenge soon.

Zombie Kidz Evolution

We only did a scenario and failed. Then, kids wanted to play something else…. Shame because we are just in the middle of the legacy and I would like to get at the end.

The game of the month

No doubt: Watergate . It is a solid 2 player game with very tense interaction. Love at first sight.
I am pretty sure it will be in my top 20 2p games next year (Here my 2021 geeklist).

The goal of next month

Goal of the month is to play Brass: Birmingham. It has been one of the first games to get in my collection and still in the shelf of shame. With Christmas, I want to find the time to finally try it and see one of the top games of the BGG ranking.
Furthermore, I want to keep my tradition to play Eldritch Horror at New Year's eve. I suppose these are not too complicated goals but... let's see how the month goes.

Happy gaming

An update to my Wishlist (...and some suggestions for Santa :))

The list of the top 20 2p games (and related lists in the comments) has been an invaluable source of information to discover new games and revise my wishlist before Black Friday and Christmas.

Before starting with the wishlist, let’s see what I bought from my previous list:

Mombasa and Camel Up came through two good deals in internet. Both are still in my shelf of shame.

The Fox in the Forest: Played once and seems to be a good alternative to Claim.

Tetrarchia bought as a short solo option, I had just a couple of plays with no opinion.

Now the wishlist:

The Quest for El Dorado: This is my preference over Clank!: A Deck-Building Adventure (at least for the moment) given its simplicity. I would like to buy the new edition with the new artwork and bigger cards but… I cannot find it, it seems it is not in the market. I suppose I will go with the old edition. I also looked at The Quest for El Dorado: The Golden Temples but I believe that the first title is closer to what I want. N

Great Western Trail (Second Edition): A strong buy for a while but… lately, I have got some concerns due its playtime... Unfortunately, I noticed that games with a playtime above 75 minutes don't go too much on the table and Great Western Trail seems to be one of them. No big deal, it will come. NE

Odin's Ravens (Second Edition): New entry in my wishlist with source of inspiration one of the 2P list... I am really into race games and Odin’s Raven seems to be the perfect 2P filler in this area. N

Maracaibo: I consider this an alternative to GWT … My feeling is that soon or later, I will buy it as well. E

Imperial Settlers: I had looked into this game when I started my hobby and my attention ended up to other games. After reading some blogs it has come back to my list as it works very well at 2 players and has also a very good solo. Furthermore, it has a playtime of around 1 hour. It seems perfect for my collection. The only dilemma is: Imperial settlers or Imperial Settlers: Empires of the North? NE

Flamme Rouge: Unfortunately, girlfriend does not like and declined it… for the moment at least. Kids grow… and maybe at some stage, a bicycle race game could be very interesting for them SE

Flick 'em Up!: It seems to be real fun for the kids and could be something for Christmas. NE

Pixel Tactics: Another good idea from the 2P geeklist. I need to read and get more information about it.E

Pandemic Legacy: Season 1: I will buy this legacy game soon or later but at the moment I am playing Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion and sincerely, I would not have time to start a second legacy. Actually, I would not enjoy it. So my wish is just frozen for the moment.E

Radlands: I add it because I just ordered it. Read very good things about Radland. I was already very close to back it in KS and made my move now. High expectations.

As usual, I hope in comments that help me get decisions and discover new games... and maybe... Santa is a BGG reader and gets some ideas as well

A month of board games - October

October was a really good month for my gaming. I had the chance to play some new games and have a really good use of my collection.

From this month, I add an assessment of my experience during the month with each game I played. With this, I consider if the experience was positive and I foresee many other plays or maybe I am getting somewhat bored or my attention has moved to another game. So low rating does not mean necessary that the game is bad.

Monthly statistic

Total play: 54. 9 of them were kid games and 14 solo.
Total different games played: 27 (new record)
New games played: 4
New expansions played: 3

Collection statistic

H Index: 11 (no change)
Games in collection: 62 (+2, 2 in & 0 out)
Games in my shelf of shame: 17 games (-2)
Total number of expansions: 29 (+7)

Board Game: Draftosaurus
Board Game: Claim
Board Game: Marvel Champions: The Card Game

Draftosaurus x8 NEW!

Bought for the kids, it ended up to be played by my girlfriend and myself. We tried the game to learn it before explaining to the kids and we really had fun. Interestingly, we were looking for a short filler and Draftosaurus filled in the gap in our collection. For the kids, it might be too early. We tried without using the die but then the game gets boring. We probably need to wait another year before they can really appreciate this little dinosaur game.

Claim x4

This keeps being our favorite filler. The chance to create different decks with Claim 2 adds a massive replyability and make the game always interesting.

Marvel Champions: The Card Game x4

I had my first solo with two different heroes and found the game more interesting. I also started building my personal decks and bought some new heroes (Captain Marvel, Scarlet Witch and Black Widow). This is the main problem of this game: Once you start, you want to try (and buy) everything… I suppose I will limit my LCG game to this one.

Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion x3 NEW!

The time for the king or better the prince (JATL) has come. Finally, I had time to start the campaign with the first three scenarios. I have to say that I expected the game much more complicated: The introductory scenarios together with Rodney’s tutorial are really helpful to get into the game and I did not need to stop too many times to check rules. The game has fulfilled the expectations so far and looks extremely promising with the next journeys around the dungeons.

It's a Wonderful World x3

I would like to end the different scenarios before receiving It's a Wonderful Kingdom. I just want to keep one of two and the more player interaction of IaWK will probably get my preference.

Ohanami x3

I suppose my girlfriend starts hating tie breakers. In our last game, we got the same points but I won with the tie-breaker. The funny thing is that we only check rules on how tie-breakers work when we need it. and the best thing is that every time we need that, I win.
Given its simplicity, Ohanami is getting a classic filler in our rotation and we enjoy every game. With a very limited price, I can easily recommend it to everyone is looking for a short and easy game.

Under Falling Skies x3

I still wanted to try a couple of scenarios before starting with the campaign. I gave a try with the hard level and got easily defeated.

Codenames: Duet x2

We were so close to win our first game... we just needed a last word but... it did not work out. cry. Interestingly, we had a second game and this time we lost with the first clue.
It is surprising how the interest of this game came back to us: We were very close to sell it and we gave it a last try... Now, we really like how it creates cooperation and how you need to be aligned with your partner in trying to win a game.

Dragomino x2

Still a couple of plays for the kid game of the year. I think this is always fun and a new trend could come in the next months. After more than 30 plays, kids have started looking at something else obviously. I think I am very happy with this purchase.

Jenga x2

Kids discovered dexterity games and unfortunately, they like them...
unfortunately because they are not my kind of games...

Meadow x2

I had another couple of plays with Meadow. I like the game, it is quite brainy. You really need to think about every single move and plan your chains accordingly. I like the idea of your engine that keeps changing based on what you add to each chain, although this might create some AP, above all towards the end of the game. On the other end, my girlfriend has a completely different view and is more skeptical about Meadow… Actually her comment was, let's say, not very good «it is like working…».
We will give a try again in the next weeks to see if she gets more into it (hopefully).

Meeple Circus x2

We had the first time with something more complicated with the kids. Obviously, they were really happy and proud to try a game from my collection. The timing was perfect given that they just joined their first circus show. It was a good try as they enjoyed the game a lot and could manage to build interesting shows.

Azul

After longer than a year, I found out through BGA that we were doing something wrong in our plays with Azul, using more restrictive rules than what actually the game has. Finally, we played correctly and the experience gets definitely more relaxing.

Calico

I keep playing solo through the different scenarios which are really fun, although I start seeing a big luck component in the game. I hope to have the chance to try this game with 2 players soon to see if it is a keeper or something to sell once I get Cascadia which seems to be somewhat better.

Concept Kids: Animals

This game is a very good exercise for the kids and for me too as it helps me practice and improve my German.

Concordia Venus

This is getting one of my favourite games as it works perfectly. Only remark is the artwork that looks somewhat oldish. I still need to find a good strategy around the game but luckily this is also the case of my girlfriend: She tried a new way to win but completely failed . I look forward to Concordia: Solitaria to have solo and coop plays as well.

Conspiracy: Abyss Universe NEW!

I found this game randomly through some readings in BGG and bought it just a couple of days before it was published on BGA. I learned and played it through my copy: It has been a great surprise as it is a nice short game with some luck component but also good decisions to be taken. It works really well on BGA, probably too well… I already have more than 10 online games…this means that although I really like it, it could end up like 7 Wonders Duel which I sold some months ago. Nevertheless, I can recommend giving a try to Conspiracy: abyss universe as it is definitely worth (feel free to challenge me on BGA).

From gallery of pultrak

Eldritch Horror

It was almost a year since my last game (new years’ eve) with EH. On my third attempt, I finally won against Azatoth for the first time. I have to say I had great time to play EH and can't wait to have another session. If only the game were shorter....

From gallery of pultrak

Escape: The Curse of the Temple

We love this real time game (we just purchased the expansion Escape: The Curse of the Temple – Expansion 2: Quest) as it creates lot of tension. The soundtrack is simply perfect given that it increases the theme around the game. So far, we have not been able to escape and thus, win. I am sure we will have many new attempts in the next weeks and soon or later, we will get out like Indiana Jones

Everdell

I finally got a challenge with Everdell: I hope this game gets into rotation at home as besides being a pleasure for the eyes, it is also real fun.

PARKS

I started playing on BGA with 3/4 players and the game gets much better. I still had a 2P game with normal rules but I believe that the use of the ranger is necessary to make the game a bit more "salty".

Port Royal

We are really waiting for Port Royal: Big Box but this is always fun. To me, one of the best fillers.

Spirit Island

Another great game with this masterpiece. I got a quite fast defeat but it was in any case a pleasure. Sometimes I am tempted to get the game on Steam, just to have the chance to play it a bit more... Playing with two spirits takes two hours... unfortunately, too long...

The Fox in the Forest NEW!

We had our first game with this trick taking game. Curiosity was very high after the positive experience with Claim. The fox in the forest has a point system that is really original and results in very fun moments during each game. I need some more plays but the first impression is good.

The Quacks of Quedlinburg

Sometimes quack can be really frustrating. It was the case of my last play where I only got white ingredients…and obviously I got hammered…

Viticulture Essential Edition

I had my first solo scenario and I failed for one point due to a little mistake in the last round: Basically, I needed to decide if I wanted to draw or to push my luck and get another card to try to win.... I chose the latter but luck was not on my side.

Wingspan

We keep playing Wingspan: European Expansion: Still difficult to have an opinion but so far my idea is that the basic game works better. In the meantime I got Wingspan: Oceania Expansion... Wingspan is the game for every situation and we like the idea to see new variants.

The game of the month

I want to reward the surprise (Gloomhaven would be too easy) so I say Conspiracy Abyss Universe: With a short playtime and easy rules, it has become one of my favorite short games.
There are many games that are really nice but are difficult to find because their ranking is too low and/or are not much discussed in the forum. I need to find a way to discover this little gems

The goals of next month

Towards the end of the month, I started going back to work to the office. This will affect a lot my gaming in the next months as available time and energies will be much less. So my ambitious target to achieve 12 games of my shelf of shame is getting even more ambitious. I could also say impossible considering we have just started the campaign of Gloomhaven where we plan at least a scenario every week. Thus, I look for something that I can achieve and once again I would like to avoid buying new games and expansions. I include expansions because last month, I bought 7 of them... definitely, too many. The main issue with my goal will be Black Friday where there might be some good opportunities...

A month of board games - September

In September, I kept rotating my collection playing some games that were in my shelf for a while. I also met my goal to have a «clean» month, namely a month without purchasing any games. The only addition to my collection was Ohanami, a nice present from my girlfriend.

Total play: 54 (new record). 9 of them were kid games and 17 solo.
Total different games played: 24 (new record)
New games played: 5

Calico x6 NEW!

It took me some time to remove this game from my shelf of shame and this month I gave it a try with some solos. After a first introductory game, I started the scenarios with the first level. At the third attempt, I made it . With my first experience with Calico, I noticed two things: Planning is key as well as luck. If you dont get the tiles you need towards the end of the game, you cannot do much.
Nevertheless, the solo experience is very pleasant and the 10 different scenarios will keep me busy for a while.
I have not had a chance to try Calico with a multi-player game yet but I am very curious to see if it is enjoyable as the solo game.

Claim x5

It has become a classic in the rotation with my girlfriend. With Claim 2, we create different decks so that every game is
always something new. We only have two factions left to try (Giants and Gnomes) which will be our next step.

UNO H2O x5

With the beginning of schools and sport, gaming had lost interest but towards the end of the month, kids started asking for it again. Uno is their holiday game but it seems to work well also during school time.

Marvel Champions: The Card Game x4

I am getting always more into this card game. I like to try the different heroes and build and test some personal decks. It works well as a solo and multiplayers too. I will probably buy a couple of new decks in the next weeks (currently I am into Captain America and Scarlet Witch, so an easy and a difficult hero).

Under Falling Skies x4

After getting experience with games in the different cities, I am ready to try the campaign. With Calico, it will be my solo game in October.

Concept Kids: Animals x3

We started playing with the more difficult animals... and now it gets tough also for the parents...

Ohanami x3 NEW!

This is how a new entry in the collection should be treated: I got the game and on the same day, we played it. Ohanami is a very easy filler with a playtime of around 15 minutes and works very well with two players. Considering how difficult it is to find valid options for games with a 15 minute playtime, Ohanami is an interesting new discovery and new diversifier for the short fillers in my collection.

Codenames: Duet x2

Other two attempts, other two failures although the last time we were very closed to win. We are still looking for our first victory and we will not give up easily. I was tempted to sell this game but I have to say that as a coop works extremely well (no risk of alpha player).

Escape: The Curse of the Temple x2 NEW!

I had my first experience with a real time board game. My girlfriend really likes it while it is okeish for me: I see it as something different that can be played from time to time.

Hanamikoji x2

After some months, we had a couple of plays with Hanamikojy. I always get surprised on how tactical this game is with its minimalist components. It is just a 10 minute game but quite deep and fun.

It's a Wonderful World x2

I started the campaign scenario and went through the first two scenarios. I would like to end the campaign before getting It's a Wonderful Kingdom.

Mandala x2

For me, one of the best short 2P games. Quite tactical and full of interaction. My only complain why squared cards? they are so awful... I cant really stand them...

Port Royal x2

Somewhat surprised we only had two plays with this Pfister's gem. I suppose Port Royal will get a lot on the table as soon as we receive the Deluxe Box in November, so it is just a short break.

Wingspan: European Expansion x2 NEW!

Finally, we got on the table the European expansion of Wingspan. I only had two plays and for sure I need more time to really understand it. Nevertheless, my first thought is that I like more the plain game as the expansion makes somewhat too easy to get resources and play birds.

Agricola (Revised Edition)

The king is back! After exactly a year, we played Agricola again. This is the best game of my collection and I am sorry it does not get to the table enough as my girlfriend finds it somewhat too heavy (food pressure).

Cockroach Poker

My brother visited us and we took the time to play a couple of games. Cockroach Poker was one of them. It is not one of my favorite but it is always a good option when you have some guests at home given its characteristics: simple and easy.
I want to try it with the kids and see how they handle a bluffing game. It could be hilarious.

Coconuts

It was the second game I played with my brother and we really enjoyed it. I think Coconuts is not a game that goes on the table too often, but when it does, it never disappoints and ensures some laughs.

Istanbul: Big Box

Another game that was taking dust in the shelf for a while. I have to say it was a shame because Istanbul is a GREAT game. I like its race side, on how fast you must be to collect the six rubies before your opponents. I can see more plays in the coming weeks and maybe I will also get the chance to try the expansions included in the Deluxe Box. Race games such as Istanbul and Viticulture Essential Edition are getting my interest lately, reason why I start really considering to buy The Quest for El Dorado, which seems to be one of the best race games in the market (any other suggestions?).

Meadow NEW!

Meadow is a game with a marvelous artwork. Seriously, what a nice game for the eyes!!! Happy to see that the game is more than just beautiful artwork: I was expecting something easier but I got nicely surprised to see that Meadow is quite deep and brainy.

Oh My Goods!: Longsdale in Revolt

I had my last solo with Oh my Goods as I decided to sell it. I consider it as a nice game but I prefer other titles with the same playtime (a 2p game is around 45 minutes, same as Wingspan and It's a wonderful world for instance).

PARKS

I tried my first variant of a game adding the ranger to a 2P game. I'd say that the variant makes things more challenging and improves the experience of 2P games. Thus, I will always include the ranger going forward.

Pandemic

This month I had a Pandemic challenge together with my girlfriend. Viruses have been defeated . It is time to plan the purchase of its big brother, Pandemic Legacy: Season 1.

Welcome To... NEW!

This is an easy but fun game. After several games on BGA, I had my first solo. The solo flows well but I definitely prefer the multiplayer experience.

Zombie Kidz Evolution

Just an additional step to achieve half of the stickers on the booklet.

The game of the month

For this month, my solos with Calico gave me the best experience. I really like the threshold conditions and the different scenarios.
I am checking Cascadia and Verdant as a potential next purchase. The latter has been launched in Kickstarter in September and on this link https://verdantgame.github.io/ a demo online can be tried.

The goals for next month

As first goal, I'd like to finish the rotation around the games I played in my collection.

Then, I have something more ambitious...

I did not have time to try Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion in September. Unfortunately, rules are quite complicated and require some time and a fresh brain to go through them. Given that I have a week off in October, I will take the chance to have my first experience with a dungeon crawler game.

Will it be love or hate?

The journey on the web

Its discovery was simply a blast, a “game” changer.

The first three months were a total addiction: I used to have more than 80 games in progress.

I am talking about Board Game Arena, the online board game platform.

With the renewal of my annual fee, I ended my first year with online gaming and it’s time for some thoughts.

I came across BGA while I was looking for some information on Puerto Rico. It took me a day to convince myself to subscribe given the very low fee (24 bucks) per year for what you get.
I started immediately playing several games and discovered fillers like Can't Stop and heavier games like Terra Mystica.

In total I had 2111 plays with 70 different games. Not too bad

Although I dont like it too much, the opportunity to play turn based is a huge benefit, above all for longer games. Unfortunately, it is not always easy to find an hour or longer to play a game like Agricola and with this, BGA helps a lot.

Another advantage I have seen on BGA is the chance to try new games. I already mentioned some of them, but great discoveries were Rallyman: GT and Welcome To.... I don’t think I would have considered buying or playing these games but after some plays, I can say they are real fun.

Another advantage is how BGA helps you play some games: My best example is Through the Ages: A New Story of Civilization, an amazing civilization game. Its setup and maintenance make the board game experience quite heavy and difficult to enjoy. On BGA, the system calculates everything for you so that you can only be focused on playing. Similar situation with The Voyages of Marco Polo, where the setup is quite a pain.

There are also other games that are just perfect and more convenient to play online: I consider Lost Cities in this area. The experience on the online implementation is so good that you don’t feel the need to buy the game.
Sometimes, it might be that you decide to sell the game because you just play it online. This was the case for 7 Wonders Duel, one of my favourite games. I had a physical copy at home but it was just collecting dust: I decided to sell it, creating space for new games.

Furthermore, BGA gives the chance to play some games that are difficult to find in the market. The best example is Russian Railroads, a pure working placement game. Although it is coming to the market with Ultimate Railroads, the base game is out of production. This was one of the first games I wanted to try when I subscribed to BGA.

Another advantage is to play games for which I don't have anyone to play with. I use to play with my girlfriend but she is not into some games. Unfortunately, Carcassonne is one of them...

Finally, BGA gives me the chance to play games with more than two players. I find nice to sit with 4 players with games like Viticulture Essential Edition and The Castles of Burgundy as it completely changes the experience from 2P games.

I have to say that I have not played many real time games so far in BGA. This is something I’d like to do more, above all if I have the chance to chat with people. I think chatting is something I miss a lot with the online experience and want to see if real time helps with that.

A month of board games - August

August was the month of variety, a month where I could finally enjoy several games of my collection. I find having the choice of several games as a big privilege. One day you travel among parks another day you save the world from viruses and then, you are in Mars...cool

August was also the month where I started my new challenge: Trying solo for all my games where possible. I have never used to play solo and I still prefer to play with other players. Nevertheless I think it is an interesting experience that increases my knowledge around this hobby. My first discovery is that I do not like solo where I just play to beat my highest score but I enjoy competing against an automa or the game itself (Coop).

Monthly statistic

Total play: 50 (new record). 11 of them were kid games and 15 solo.
Total different games played: 22 (new record)
New games played: 4
New expansions played: 2

Collection statistic

Claim x5

I started mixing the factions of Claim with Claim 2 to create different decks. I am really happy I discovered this game which it happened just randomly given the low ranking in BGG. The more I play, the more I like it. So far, this is the best 2P trick taking game I have tried. Each faction makes every game unpredictable and different. It definitely deserves much more attention. At some stage, I could look for additional expansions.

It's a Wonderful World x5 NEW!

Played solo and 2P games. This is a smart game where planning your moves and building your engine make the difference. Nevertheless, the number of players does not make too much difference as the game looks like a solo. The interaction provided by the draft and the supremacy bonuses are not enough in my opinion. For this reason, I am happy I backed It's a Wonderful Kingdom that should have more player interaction.

Zombie Kidz Evolution x4 & Dragomino x3

The two games have lost the momentum due to holidays and then, beginning of schools. Nevertheless, they were the two stars for the kids during summer and their entry point into board game. Mission accomplished

Concept Kids: Animals x3

I was skeptical but kids really like it. Very good as this game is a good exercise for them too as they need to think which help they can provide or guess the right animal. This has been a nice surprise.

Oh My Goods!: Longsdale in Revolt x3 NEW!

I started the solo campaign and I am stuck at the first chapter with three failures. The last attempt was VERY close but not enough…
I really enjoy Oh My Goods but the rulebook is annoying, too minimalistic. Often you need to watch videos and ask for help in BGG as rules are badly explained. This makes the experience of the game heavier than what it should be. It Is a shame because people can easily get discouraged and give up with a very nice game.

PARKSx3

I had another couple of 2P plays with Parks. The gameplay flows really well but I’d like to try to use the ranger to see if the game gets more challenging (tighter).
I also played solo but also here I want to use a variant which I have seen in BGG (https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/2714343/new-look-annas-solo...) where you play against an automa that also scores points.

Port Royal x3

Small box, great game. This is THE filler for me. Fun, easy and short. Cant wait to get the Deluxe Box coming in fall.

UNO H2O x3

Nice to see the kids love a game I used to play in my childhood The only negative side is that I need to keep my level of attention extremely high to avoid any cheating... The angel time is over …devil

Under Falling Skies x3

I have started playing with new cities to get ready for the campaign. I won in Rio de Janeiro but lost in Mexico City. This game is smart and works very well, my only concern is that it might get somewhat too repetitive after a while. Anyway, this might be a problem in the future because at the moment I can only say that… the challenge has just started

Concordia: Aegyptus / Creta x2 NEW!

Played the smaller Creta map which is more appropriate for 2P games. Cant wait for the online implementation to play with 4-5 players.

Marvel Champions: The Card Game x2 NEW!

My first solo experience with Marvel Champions. I played with only one hero, Spider Man against Rhino. Surprisingly, I won and actually found the game somewhat too easy. In the end, I could boost my attack twice with a plus 8 and in the final round I just attacked with all my allies. Then, I had a 2p game against the same villain (Rhino) with Spide Man and Ms Marvel.. This time, things got more complicated and we got defeated. My experience was super positive ,although I needed some help from BGG community as rules are not always clear.

Pandemic x2

I thought I was ready to move to Pandemic Legacy: Season 1 but I still need some training. I got defeated twice on my solo.

Coconuts

Somewhat surprised that we played only once Coconuts during the month given that we had tons of fun.

Codenames: Duet

Another defeat. Unfortunately, we don't find a way to win. The game is quite tough and not being native English speakers does not help probably. We will give another try soon, in the end three attempts are not a big number.

Everdell

One of my favourite games was on the table again... Finally, I'd say. Unfortunately, my girlfriend is less into it and thus, we do not play too often. For sure, I can see Everdell as one of my next solo candidate

Patchwork & The Isle of Cats

Played and lost with both my polyomino games. Actually, my defeat with Isle of Cats burns... it was the first time my girlfriend won with this game...cry

The Quacks of Quedlinburg

Interestingly, we have not played Quacks for three months. This time, I won the game with only two points more than my opponent, although I had a good advantage at the end of the 7. round. I like the catch up system in Quacks as it leaves the game open till the end which is something nice in a push your luck game.

Ticket to Ride: Europe NEW!

Given my interest in the board games, I think it is important to experience the great classics. Ticket to Ride is definitely one of them. I played a 2P game with the European map. Although the game was very loose, I can see why it is such a success: Mechanics works well and are easy to grasp, it is a game for everyone that can be explained in 5 minutes. I have the American and Swiss maps as well. The latter would give me a better experience with 2P. Looking forward to travelling around Switzerland sheep

Viticulture Essential Edition

I had my first solo and I liked it. The automa works well although I won quite easily. I did not separate the expansion cards of Viticulture: Moor Visitors Expansion from the main game so I am not sure if my solo got easier for this reason. In any case, I am ready to try the different solo scenarios soon.

Wingspan

With Wingspan, I had my revenge for my defeat of The Isle of Cats stopping my girlfriend's winning streak at four games meeple.
Wingspan has really been a great addition to my collection: It is a game that I can play after a tough day at work without problems given its limited playtime and easy rules.

The game of the month

I bought the game because I found a very attractive price in the second hand market and it was not one of my targets. Nevertheless, Marvel Champions has really surprised me. I love it as a solo and as a coop with my girlfriend. It reminds me my time with , Magic: The Gathering in high school but in a cooperative way.

The goals for next month

Since I started my hobby one and half year ago, I have purchased at least a game every month. Thus, my goal for September is to have a “clean month” with no purchases and to work on my shelf of shame. Shelf of shame that should go back to a single digit before Christmas. Would it be possible? I suppose it will depend on how I get involved by the next game I want to try… With the change of the weather and the beginning of the cold season, I think it is the best moment to start a campaign with Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion. If the experience is positive, it might be really difficult to try other games in the short term, considering that I am really into Marvel Champions as well.
