Print and Roll Games - a self-publisher's diary

This is a project that I've been considering for quite some time now - so it's exciting to be finally embarking on it. I've been designing games for about two years now. I particularly enjoy dice allocation games such as Alien Frontiers, Troyes, Lords of Vegas and Castles of Burgundy and have been working on a range of dice based games of my own. I have looked at conventional publishing and self-publishing but found that the cost of repeatedly shipping dice would make the games rather more expensive than I would wish. So, I hit on the idea of a print and play website - providing the rules, boards, cards and everything that you would need to play the games, except the dice. As a gamer (first tabletop then euro-games) I already had a large selection of dice and have found a great many affordable sources for the few that I was short of - I hope that this will be the same for plenty of other gamers. I currently have two games coming towards the end of beta-testing and two more at the early prototype stage. I hope to be posting new games over the coming months and years. Each one will be available for a few pounds (GBP) and will use common and readily available dice and counters. I hope to have the site fully up and running within the next couple of months with the first two games available to buy. As soon as the site's up and running, I'll post a link on this blog. Siegecraft is now available to buy at www.printandrollgames.com for the bargain price of £2!

Your payment will be rewarded with pdf copies to print out the board and rules on either a single sheet of A3 (if you have access to an A3 printer) or two A4 pages. These will be e-mailed to you within 24 hours of payment.

Please have a game and let me know what you think, either here or on the Siegecraft BGG entry: http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/126719/siegecraft

Thanks and happy gaming.

Print and Roll Games is now up and running at www.printandrollgames.com

The first game available is a free download called Rolling Battle (not previously mentioned in the blog as it's something I've dug out of my archives).

Over the coming months it will be followed by Siegecraft, Spellsmiths (the new name for Ivory Tower) and hopefully Follies:

Follies is a role-selection/hand-management game I have recently started work on. Players take on the role of rich Victorian industrialists, attempting to build the most ludicrous and ostentatious structure to display their wealth.

Please have a look at Print and Roll Games and feel free to let me know what you think.

Siegecraft is now on BGG (or will be once it's been moderated) - so all those who are kindly playtesting for me will be able to log their games.

The game is entering the final playtest stage and will be available from the website in July.

It's been a good week for playtesting:

Firstly, I played a couple of games of Siegecraft on Wednesday and it still seems to be very balanced - in that I lost as both attacker and defender! In pretty much every game that I've played so far, the result has come down to the final roll.

Siegecraft will be the first game up on the website, it still needs a little more playtesting - particularly to rule out potential game-breaking strategies - but should be ready to go on sale as soon as the financial elements of the website are up and running.

Secondly, at London on Board this afternoon, I had the first playtest of my newest project. It currently has the working title of Ivory Tower - though this may change as there is already a solitaire card game of the same name.

This is a bluffing / hand-management card game for 3-6 players requiring only a small deck of cards and 2 D6s per player. We played a 4 player game which lasted (as hoped) for about 40mins. This is intended to be a light / filler type game (as will all of the early games on Print and Roll) and, in that spirit, everyone enjoyed it very much.

The main issue seems to be that the bluffing element of the game is great fun and provides a lot of player interaction - but it's not a winning strategy. I'm going to play a couple more games before making alterations but I think that there needs to be some greater incentive to pushing up the ante.

The next couple of weeks holds more playtesting for both games plus tinkering with the website itself.

The site should be online by the end of the week - at which point I'll be posting publisher, designer and game details on BGG.
