Wait, we’re doing this again? ALREADY!? Time sure flies when you’re having fun. I hope 2021 has been a good year to whomever is reading this. With personal and health issues abound, we’ve been doing the best we can to make ends meet AND do the things we love to do…play games!

I’ve taken the plunge into Dungeons and Dragons 5e for the first time this year. All I can say is that it’s addicting! We’ve completed the Lost Mine of Phandelver and are currently running Storm King’s Thunder. I’ve got over 75 hours of recorded sessions on my YouTube channel, so go have a look once you’re done here if you’re a fan.

The Podcasts are still going strong too. We’ve decided to do them monthly due to time constraints, but with enough support I’d love to do them weekly like we used to. While we mostly talk about games, we do delve into other nerdy interests from time to time. You should give us a listen on my YouTube Channel!

With regards to the awards we’re keeping it simple. The following is a list of board games and videos games we’ve played this year and absolutely love. It doesn’t matter when they were released. Some are still considered “Early Access”. Some of our entries have indeed been released in 2021, but you’ll no doubt recognize some old chestnuts in there that are getting the recognition they deserve.

If you haven’t already, be sure to follow and subscribe to me on Twitch & YouTube. Support me on Patreon and/or PayPal. Buy games via my affiliate Humble Bundle & Green Man Gaming links. Most importantly, be kind to others and keep on gaming!

2020 has been a rough year for everyone.  I myself had 3 surgeries this year and I am now trying to find a way to deal with chronic pain that keeps me awake at all hours of the night.  I'm so thankful that game developers/publishers continue to pump out games so that the rest of us gamer folk can enjoy them, especially now that social distancing is a thing.  Platforms like Tabletop Simulator and Steam have been incredibly helpful.  I personally would love to see more board games go digital.

Once again we'll be touching on our favorite games this year along with a new "top ten favorite games of all time" list.  As I've stated year after year, we do not have access to every game on the market.  Anything covered on these lists are only those games that we own.  We get about 15 board games free a year from various sources...the rest we buy, so our selection for 2020 is somewhat limited.  To that end, the games we cover here are representative of games we first played in 2020 regardless of release date.  I'd love to only cover those games published in 2020 but without more press copies and/or Patreon donations I'm afraid that won't happen.

Speaking of which, I lost my job at the end of 2019 (along with 200+ others) when the company I worked for "reorganized".  I have yet been able to get another job what with my surgeries and medical issues.  If all of my fans/YT subscribers donated $1 a month I'd have more than enough to cover expenses AND publish more content without having to look for another job.  I have a semi-regular podcast and call out supporter names monthly and even give out keys to the top supporters.  I'd appreciate any support you can give me.

You're just here for the list, I get it.  Still, I had to try.

Well, hello!  December snuck up on us pretty quickly and you know what that means...another DGA Awards list that is oh-so-helpful in helping people choose what games to look at next and/or possibly buy them for a loved one this holiday season.  That's what I keep telling myself anyway.

To be honest, I haven't had a whole lot of time as of late to update this blog...not that I didn't want to.  Medically it's been hell.  To top it off, I had surgery a couple of days ago and have phase 2 scheduled in four months. I still publish board game content though, mainly in the form of let's plays and first impressions on my YouTube Channel.  I also still honor paid Kickstarter previews and anyone else willing to pay for my time.

The format of this year's DGA Awards is going to be a free-for-all, much like my health...LOL.  I've included lists for our Top Ten Favorite Games for this year at this point in time, regardless of release date and regardless of them being on last year's list.

Before I do that, I should probably plug the places in which I have been publishing board game/video game content and also provide ways for you to support or donate.  Every little bit is appreciated, especially now that I'm jobless thanks to a corporate downsizing. Patreon is best, as it allows me to include your name in a shout-out video every month as well as possibly provide free Steam keys (to the top donors).  Super Chats are cool too, especially if you want to request a game to be covered.

It's that time of year again, the time where we look at the Top Ten Board Games and Video Games. Vinnie Jr, Aidalee, and I have prepared separate lists just in time for holiday shopping. If you're buying tabletop games, please feel free to buy through Amazon so that I get a small percentage of the sale. If you're buying video games, check out Green Man Gaming and Humble Bundle for the same reasons.

While some of you may be aware of the news section on my website, I don't expect all of you to know of its existence. To sum it up, it's been another crazy year. Medical issues continue and I still only have partial answers after four years of doctor hopping and research. Aidalee and I shared our one year anniversary a couple of months ago and Vinnie Jr. is now a Junior in High School with an interest in the Vet Tech program. Sarah, my German Shepherd, is as vocal and demanding as ever. I started live-streaming on Twitch this year and continue to be supported by some wonderful people via Patreon.

Standard disclaimers apply:

This is not a “best of” list. You can’t claim something is the best if you haven’t tried every other product like it on the market. These are my favorite games at this point in time (across all years), labeled as a top ten with honorable mentions. To stretch my brain a bit, I made a rule to where I cannot include games I’ve already listed last year. That really stinks, because there are so many awesome games out there that I want to mention! I stuck those in the Honorable Mentions part, because they deserved to be known. Go check out the previous years’ DGA Awards for more games that I REALLY like, as well as my written reviews & YouTube channel to see all the games that I own and to learn more about the games you see below.

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the (*trumpets/fanfare*) “2017 DGA Awards”. You may now applaud. Seriously though, this time of year is probably one of my favorites. Aside from the fact that tax season is almost here, I get to revisit all the games I’ve played this year and compare them against games I listed as my favorite for the previous year.

On another positive note, DGA continues to expand in part to some amazing supporters…namely my Patreon subscribers who, while few, are pretty darned awesome. For $1+/month, you’ll get a shout-out in a monthly thank-you video as well as a chance to earn a free Steam key…the higher the pledge the better the chance. $5+/month gets you access to my discord server where you can talk to yours truly. Since YouTube’s ad-friendly policy is messed up at the moment and flagging almost every one of my videos, your support is needed now more than ever.

As of today, my video count is over 6,000 which is pretty crazy when you think about it. I’m releasing, on average, three or four videos a day averaging between ten and thirty minutes in length. Some of my live-streams have gone on for almost four hours. If you like my commentary, I guarantee you won’t be bored as you’ll most likely find something you haven’t watched on my channel yet. With that said, I am taking suggestions on how to improve my channel to get more average views per video. Hit me up if you see something other YouTubers are doing that I’m not…vmp0514@msn.com. Now onto the show!

We consider ourselves a gamer-family, though there are plenty of times where only two of us are available for a game when we’d like to do something together. This, coupled with the suggestion from a friend that I make some sort of list, led me to this post.

The below is a list of my top-ten recommended two-player board games, though this list comes with a few caveats. For one, there’s no consideration to publication date. Secondly, I only listed games that I actually own. Lastly, there are PLENTY of games that work great as a two-player game but support more, however there were so many that I had to restrict my top ten list to two-player only games. I did include a few exceptions in the honorable mentions section and honestly wanted to list more than I did.

Are there better two-player games out there than the ones I listed? Probably…but again, there’s a good chance I’ve never played them (you know, because I’m human and all). The list is done in video format, so go brew some popcorn and microwave some coffee…or something…and enjoy the show!

---

Top Ten Two-Player Board Games:

10. Star Realms

9. Capo dei Capi

8. Quorsum

7. Jaipur

6. Jambo

5. The Duke

4. Chess

3. Hive

2. Trambahn

1. Lost Cities (Card Game)

Honorable Mentions: Khet, Mr. Jack in New York, One Zero One, Patchwork, Qwixx, Stratego: Fire & Ice Variant, The Rose King, Dead Man’s Draw, Machi Koro, Quadropolis, Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures, The Last Spike, Zombie Dice, Ticket to Ride: The Card Game, Forbidden Island, The Builders: Middle Ages, Splendor, Stockpile, CV, The Game, Star Trek: Five Year Mission, Dragonheart, NOIR, Battle Line

So I recently published the 2016 DGA Awards and got to thinking: “Will people just take my advice and go out and buy the games I listed without any thought to whether or not they’d be a good fit for their family?” Experienced gamers who know their way around the board, I figured, would be OK in that regard. Newcomers, on the other hand, may be a bit overwhelmed by the games I had listed should they rush out to buy them. To that end, I came up with a short list of games that I feel would be idea for beginners to play. There’s more out there, obviously, but the below should get you started.

Top Ten Casual Board Games For Beginners:

10. The Game

9. Tsuro

8. Sushi Go! or Sushi Go Party!

7. Forbidden Island

6. Splendor

5. Blokus

4. Apples to Apples

3. Roll For It!

2. Settlers of Catan

1. Ticket to Ride

Honorable Mentions: CV, Codenames, Love Letter, Lost Cities (Board Game or Card Game), Say Anything, Tetris Link

2016 has been the year of hell with regards to my personal well-being. I know, I know…I shouldn’t be starting articles like this on such a positive note, but I’m a rebel that way. For those of you who forget that I have a semi-updated news feed, I’ve been rather sick as of late. It all started around November/December of last year…costochondritis, GERD, hiatus hernia, a rare inflammation in the throat that makes it swell, having my wisdom teeth pulled, and a bunch of ER visits. The fun is STILL on-going, huzzah! As such I really haven’t played a lot of board games, though I have now produced over 4,000 videos on my YouTube channel. While I didn’t get to play as many tabletop games as I would have liked, I have received a number of excellent games this year that are definitely in the below list. Like last year, I’ll be listing ANY game that I own regardless of release date.

This is not a “best of” list. You can’t claim something is the best if you haven’t tried every other product like it on the market. These are my favorite games at this point in time, labeled as a top ten with honorable mentions. I did try to weigh the more recent games a bit more heavily as it wouldn’t be fun to see the same ten games on the list every year. That really stinks, because there are so many awesome games out there that I want to mention! Go check out the previous years’ DGA Awards for more games that I REALLY like, as well as my written reviews & YouTube playlists to see all the games that I own.

2015 has been a pretty good year for DGA. My YouTube channel has reached 9,000+ subscribers and contains over 2,500 videos, a far cry from last year’s numbers. While being diligent with my content is part of the reason the numbers continue to grow, it wouldn’t have been possible without the support of gamers like you. It also helps that there are a TON of awesome games out there just waiting for someone to discover and play them. Yes, it’s that time of year again folks…the 2015 DGA Awards are upon us!

Like the previous years, I’ll be listing my favorite games regardless of their release date. It just wouldn’t be fair to list the “Best Games of 2015” or the “Best Games of All Time” when I haven’t played them all. DGA just isn’t popular enough for that yet and I receive maybe fifty to seventy-five board games every year, which doesn’t put a dent in the total amount of games published in said year. As such, I find those kinds of titles misleading despite their obvious SEO benefits. All of the games listed below are games that I own. It doesn’t mean that they are the best…it means they are my favorite out of all of the games in my collection at this point in time. It’s important to remember that before leaving a comment like, “but you forgot about X”.

For a list of the games I do own and have played, click on either the “Board Games” or “Video Games” tabs above. I’ve covered many video games on my YouTube Channel that I haven’t here, so go check that out too. It just became more convenient to release video game content via “let’s plays” due to the sheer volume of press copies I get. Each board game entry will have a link to the written article, which in turn contains Amazon and other links for buying the game for yourself. Each video game entry will have a link to one of the videos published to my YouTube channel (which usually has a link to its Steam page). Hopefully the below will give you some ideas for your upcoming holiday shopping…no need to thank me, I’m awesome that way.

The gaming industry continues to surprise me with each passing day. More and more creative people are stepping forward and bringing forth their ideas in the hopes of being able to share them with gamer families and friends all over the world. Don’t believe me? Go check out crowdfunding sites like “Kickstarter” and take a gander at how many games have made it through “Early Access” programs on digital distribution sites like “Steam“. The number of games that have successfully made their way to an official release / retail distribution with the help of the general public is staggering. On one hand, it pains me to think about how many games wouldn’t have seen the light of day had crowdfunding / early access programs not existed. On the other, it makes me feel good to know that so many people share my love for gaming. Needless to say, tabletop gaming and video gaming are two concepts that won’t be dying out any time soon…quite the contrary, it seems.

DGA has seen a lot of changes in 2014 and as such, I’m going to deviate from last year’s format a bit. For one, I’ve only included board games in the DGA Awards, an oversight I intend to correct starting today. I grew up with video games dating back to “Pong” and the “Atari 2600″…it would be a crime in the extreme not to tribute and recognize video games that I absolutely can’t put down. After all, I do have close to 1,500 videos on my YouTube Channel. On another note, my primary focus this year has been covering games on “Kickstarter” (board games) and Steam’s “Early Access” program (video games). I’ll be including a section for these games too, though it’s important to stress that the builds I played are prototypes and may not actually be out on the market yet due to various reasons.

Before we move onto the awards, there is one final thing I’d like to address. I often see other sites listing “The Best Games of X” or “The Best Games of All Time”…this personally irks the hell out of me. The ONLY way you can claim that something is “The Best” or “The Best of All Time” is by playing EVERYTHING ELSE out on the market. Unless you own a DeLorean equipped with a flux capacitor and can devote twenty plus hours a day to gaming, I can guarantee that personally trying out games under that “everything else” category would be impossible. As a father who works full-time, I can barely scrounge up a few hours a day to cover and publish the content I do now. I don’t find it very fair to mark or label something as “The Best” if you haven’t sampled all of its competition…it’s just a false and misleading statement.

Along those lines, I’ll be opting to do what I did the last two years: list the most noteworthy games that I own and have played (regardless of release date) in 2014. Perhaps once DGA gets a little bigger (I’m currently the only one manning the wheel), I’ll be able to break things down by release date and category. As it stands, I simply don’t play enough games to justify going along with the trend…besides, I’ve found simple to be best anyway. For a full list of the games I do own and have played, click on either the “Board Games” or “Video Games” tabs above. There are a few games I’ve covered on my YouTube Channel that I haven’t here, so go check that out too. Each entry will have a link to the written article, which in turn contains Amazon and other links for buying the game for yourself. Hopefully the below will give you some ideas for your upcoming holiday shopping…no need to thank me, I’m awesome that way.
