Trolls!
The old game Space Marine had Trolls for the Chaos army. (Renegades: Eldar and Chaos Armies for Space Marine) I really wanted to use these miniatures so I added them to my Ork army. The Trolls are combined with Ork Wildboyz to represent Ork Skarboyz units. I think they really represent "Assault" units very well.
I based the metal Pulsa Rokkit vehicle with an Ork Mekboy to give it some identity.
You can spot two units with 6 miniatures on the base. I added an extra Gretchin to the Warboss stands to stress the importance of the units.
Miniature Games Construction Yard
In this blog I'll talk about various miniature games. Custom miniatures and minor conversions are my favorite pastime. I'll cover scenery making and painting too.
The WIP you'll see here is all about Necromunda, Epic 40,000, Warhammer Fantasy 5th Edition, Warmaster and Warhammer 40K 3rd Edition.

The latest version of Epic "Epic Armageddon" has an Ork dropship called "Ork Landa". The 3rd edition did not have this unit so I had to create custom rules for it. I really wanted a Landa in my Ork force.
You see a miniature from Mechwarrior: Dark Age that I am going to use as dropship for the Orks. The following stats are based on a 'Fast Eldar Bomber':
Range: 30cm
Firepower: 4
Intercept: 1
Gunnery: 2
Armour: 6+
Special: Transport (8), Anti-personnel
Cost: 80
I like to keep conversions simple yet effective. Have a look at the two units in the back. I added one Stormboy on top of ruins scenery to give the impression of having jumppacks.

More boxes of tiny miniatures to be glued. My workbench starts to become my favorite spot in the house...
A couple of days ago I started working on my Ork Mega Gargant so now I have a sweet spot for the Orks. Therefore, work continues to build my Epic Ork force.
Every Ork force needs big guns. I happen to have ten Shokk attack guns and themed and teamed them around a Gretchin detachment.
One of my favorite Ork units are the Kommando's. I wanted to make as many stands as possible with the small amount of miniatures I own. So I added ruins and a lone Nob to represent the Boss.
The 2 Battle Wagons with the shovel in front are to be used by the Kommando's so I added a driver to one of them.
I only have 6 bikes, so I added a Nob to one of them as the leader and the biker to the left is making a wheelie. These small conversions add some variation to the small squad.
Stompa's are an iconic vehicle of the Orks. I converted one with a kustom 'eapon to function as a leader of the detachment. The weapon is an Imperial Guard heavy flamer from Warhammer 40,000 (Third Edition).

Wargames in the 6mm scale like Epic 40,000 or Epic Armageddon are great. They often have the look and feel of those fine Real Time Strategy pc games like "Red Alert 2" or "Star Wars Battlegrounds".
Now how cool would it be to have a tabletop battle game in the 6mm scale with Star Wars miniatures! Well, have a look at the (very cheap) Star Wars Pocketmodels. They combine neatly with the game rules of Epic 40,000.
Epic Star Wars battles at the kitchen table are possible by simply using a "counts as" conversion army list. So I started to design such a list and have plans to play some battles with it. More about this later. Keep an eye on this blog...

Time to start building an Ork army. Since the base game came with a lot of Ork miniatures, I can now field quite some points worth of Orks. This Mega Gargant from Titan Legions will be the centrepiece.
I will add some spare Ork or Gretchin miniatures to the open loading ramp when I finished all weapons etc.
This weapon conversion was added to make the model less standard. The scope is positionned so that it look like it fits to the Mekboyz's tower window...
To complete the Gargant I will add an Imperial Guard Vortex Missile and maybe another close combat arm.

At my busy workbench I have found some plastic flyers.
They are from the game Silent Death. But I will use them as replacement miniatures for EPIC 40,000. They are waaaay cheaper than the GW versions.
Row 1
Flyer 1 Imperial Navy Thunderbolt or Ork Dakkajet
Flyer 3 Imperial Navy Valkyrie or Ork Dakkajet
Row 2
Flyer 1 Imperial Navy Marauder
Row 3
Flyer 1 Imperial Navy Lightning
Flyer 2 Chaos Hell Talon (Firelord)
Flyer 3 Imperial Navy Lightning Strike
Flyer 4 Chaos Hell Blade (Doomwing) or Necron Warscythe
(Necrons will be part of my Chaos 'counts as' army...)
Here are some characteristics for new flyers I designed:
Imperial Guard - Flyer
Marauder Bomber 30-60 5 2/2 5+ Artillery (Self-Propelled Artillery Marauder) 45
Marauder Destroyer 30 5 2/2 5+ (Marauder) 45
Thunderbolt Fighter 15 2 3/2 5+ (Thunderbolt) 30
Lightning 45 2 3/2 5+ (Lightning) 35
Lightning Strike 45 2 3/2 5+ Tank Destroyer (Lightning Strike) 35
Toco's Lightning 15 1 4/3 5+ (Fast Thunderbolt) 30
Valkyrie Vulture Gunship 30 2 2/1 5+ (Long Range Thunderbolt) 30
Space Marine - Flyer
Valkyrie Assault Carrier 15 8 2/5 6+ Transport(6) (Assault Thunderhawk) 80
Stormraven 30 7 2/5 6+ Transport(6) (Fast Thunderhawk) 80
Smaller than the Thunderhawk Gunship, the Stormraven is, not surprisingly, much more agile than its more well-known sibling, thanks to its wide array of vectored thrusters. It is this maneuverability that makes it an ideal support craft in environs (such as the crowded spires of a hive city) where the deployment of Thunderhawks would be impractical or simply foolish.
Space Marine - Support
Valkyrie Vulture 40 30 1 1 4+ Skimmer, Stubborn (Fast Land Speeder) 20
Valkyrie Vendetta 35 30 2 1 4+ Skimmer, Stubborn (Land Speeder) 20
Imperial Navy - Support
Valkyrie Vendetta 35 45 1 1 5+ Skimmer, Transport(1) If this detachment is wiped out, army morale is reduced by an additional d3 points. (Fast Falcon) 29
Valkyrie 35 30 Disrupt 2 5+ Skimmer Transport(2) If this detachment is wiped out, army morale is reduced by an additional d3 points. (Fast Wave Serpent) 28
Dropship 30 30 Disrupt 2 6+ Skimmer Transport(2) If this detachment is wiped out, army morale is reduced by an additional d3 points. (Wave Serpent) 28
Chaos - Flyer
Hell Blade 15 2 4/2 4+ (Doomwing, Night Scythe) 31
Hell Talon 30 Heavy Barrage 1/3 5+ (Firelord, Doom Scythe) 53
Ork - Support
Landa = 30 4 1/2 6+ Transport(8), Anti-Personnel (Fast Eldar Bomber) 80

My Warhammer Epic 40,000 space dwarves need leaders.
From left to right: Living Ancestor, Veteran Warlord, Stronghold Lord, Ancestor Lord, and 2 Warlord units.
The Ancestor Lord will receive some blue paint to distinguish him from a Stronghold Lord, and to indicate Psyker skills.
I have added 3 Overlord Airships that look quite a lot like the Soviet Kirov's from the pc game "Red Alert 2". The airships will be defended by 7 Iron Eagle Gyrocopters who still need to be glued to the stands.
In the top right corner you can see what I am going to use for the Colossus troopcarrier and the Cyclops Titan-hunter. More later...

THE iconic centrepiece of the Squat army must be the Land Train. I had some parts that needed repairs. The train needed tracks, so I added some from WW2 miniatures. With cardboard I made a shovel and some extra plastic was added for details.
The Berserker Battlecar wagon was made by adding a plastic Rhino hull on top. Paint will cover all inadequacies.
Basing my Warhammer Epic 40,000 core Squat troopers:
Regular brethren (2 Squats, 3 Ratlings) to the left, Veterans (5 Squats) in the middle.
On the right side you see how I have to recycle my second hand miniatures.

Addicted to the smell of plastic cement glue, I started making some Squat units too. Thse space Dwarves are incredibly cool and I don't understand GW doesn't support them anymore.
Following picture is showing one of my Eldar Scouts (or Ranger) bases. I replaced one miniature with ruins scenery to create some variation (and to win some extra units by not using 5 per base).
Because the Squats are very expensive on eBay, I had to come up with a solution to make as many units as possible, with few miniatures. Because I don't like Ratling Snipers (I use Catachans instead), I merged them with regular Squats.
(I am making these for Warhammer Epic 40,000 but they're also great for Space Marine.)

I glued 2 Vampire Raiders. Please note the rear stabilizers. I did not use the vertical supports. It was hell to glue them and the result was very fragile. So I decided to not use them. Once painted, no-one will notice.
The Wraithguard bases only have 4 miniatures each. This way I can field more units. (5's too much for one base anyway...)
The Avatar in front will be glued on one of the old square bases. I'll use another Avatar miniature I own (with spear) for a converted Exodite army...
