Welcome back to the PNP News and 3rd of my series of catch up posts for the period where I fell behind on the blog. This post should catch me up on new games, redesigns, and major updates from those months. (If I've missed something, please let me know.) I'll do one more post in this catch up series covering the Kickstarter games that had free PNP options (where the free PNP option is still available).

I'll cover PNP Design Contests in the next post, but I did want to remind people that the entry period for the 2017 Children's Game Print and Play Design Contest is November 26th, 2017. If you'd like to enter, there are two days left to get your game in.

One other thing I'd like to clarify is that I can't cover fanmade PNP redesigns of non-PNP games in this blog but. I occasionally have people ask me to cover these games in my posts. The game must actually be released as PNP to be included in this blog. This means that redesigns of games like Love Letter or the Kwanchai's Neolithic Ops redesign of Nexus Ops will not be included here. There's a few reasons for this. Most importantly is that not all publishers are okay with the idea of fanmade redesigns for games they are trying to sell. Also, many times the redesigns do not include the rulebook so the game isn't playable unless you already own it. Finally, since published games are not marked as PNP in the BGG database, I may not ever see them. I've clarified the FAQ to more explicitly state this.

Today is Black Friday in the US (does the rest of the world follow the US shopping schedule?) and that means that there are great deals to be had on several Pay-for-PNP games. Personally, I love having companies that support a PNP model in addition to their published model. If I build a game myself, I can save a lot of money on the purchase price.
Wargame Vault is the PNP home to terrific wargame publishers like Hollandspiele, Tiny Battle Publishing, Flying Pig Games, and One Small Step (and many others.) I'll let you browse the sales yourself, but if I may make one recommendation: Invaders from Dimension X by Hermann Luttmann is one of my favorite games and is discounted to US$8.30 today.
Other sites with Black Friday deals include: DriveThru RPG, DriveThru Cards, and Wargame Downloads. I've linked directly to the Black Friday deals for each site. (Full disclosure: I was a playtester for Invaders from Dimension X! and I am an affiliate for Wargame Vault, DriveThru RPG, and DriveThru Cards.)

There are also a ton of free games available too! There's some really cool looking games in this list, including several that don't require any assembly at all. Let's get to it!

Welcome, BOILS and GHOULS, to the PNP NOOSE! Today is Halloween and I've SCARED up some new games for you. The games are free so you can get MORGUE for your money, but you'll have to HACK them up yourself! All of the games today are soliSCARE so you can enjoy the KILL of victory even if your friends are ALL TIED UP! These games will really make you SCREAM with delight!

OK... that's enough of that. Please pardon my love of the Crypt-Keeper.

There's a ton of news to cover today! In today's post I'll be reintroducing coverage of current PNP contests, spreading some holiday cheer, and discussing a great way you can help raise money for those in need - and get some awesome games in the process.

PNP Contests

Longtime readers of the blog know that I used to cover PNP Contests and let people know when the entry deadlines were and who won the contest after it was over. I stopped doing it for awhile when it started to feel overwhelming, but I think those contests are a huge part of the PNP Community and deserve to be highlighted. I think that if I keep it a little simpler, I can keep everyone up to date about the current contests.

Remember, that if you ever want to see what contests are going on or find links to old contests, you can always get info from Daniel Isom's thread: Current PNP Contest Info.
You can also find a list of winners of all past contests at John Kean's geeklist: Community PnP Contests and Winners.

2017 Children's Game Print and Play Design Contest
This is the 3rd annual print and play contest dedicated to games that you can play with your children. I am the host of this contest. There are separate categories for different age levels and categories for parents to design games with their kids. This is a fun contest for families!
Entry Deadline: November 26th, 2017
Voting Deadline: December 17th, 2017

2017 Mint Tin Design Contest
In this contest, all components must fit into a single mint tin. This is a great place to find games that are easy to carry with you and don't take up a lot of room to store.
Entry Deadline: November 21st, 2017
Voting Deadline: December 5th, 2017

2017 18 Card Microgame Contest
This is the annual contest for microgames that are exactly 18 cards.
Entry Deadline: December 15th, 2017
Voting Deadline: December 30th, 2017

PNP Secret Santa Events

The 2017 PnP Secret Santa

The 2017 PNP Santa event is starting very soon but you still have a few days to join.
You may sign up until November 5th, 2017. This exchange is open to anyone, even if you're totally new to PNP. As long as you can commit to building games with at least 10 pages of components, you're welcome to participate. This exchange is one of my favorite holiday traditions!
Once you've signed up, be sure to post a few ideas to help your PNP Santa out in the official Wishlist Geeklist.
I hope to see many of you participating!

The 2017 Mini PNP Secret Santa
If the full PNP Santa event is too much, the mini Santa event is much lower stress and includes much easier entry requirements. In this gift exchange, you cannot craft more than 10 pages of components. This is a great way for people less comfortable with PNP to still participate in a BGG exchange.
You may sign up until November 17th, 2017. The sign up date is later because you don't need as much time to craft games as you do in the full exchange.) Be sure to create a wishlist to give your Santa some ideas!

PNP Items in the Jack Vasel Memorial Fund Auction

Normally, I would never use this blog to link to an auction, but I wanted to make an exception for a few items because the money raised will go to a really great charity. I try to support the Jack Vasel Memorial Fund every year because I love their mission of helping people in need within our gaming community.

Yeomen: The 9 Card Agincourt Game - This is one of my designs and was the winner of the 2016 9-card Nanogame PnP Design Contest.
9 Card Siege - This is another one of my designs. It is a simple game based on the States of Siege Series. The winner of this auction will be the first to get the brand new artwork I'm currently creating for the game!
Black Sonata - This game was the winner of the 2017 Solitaire Print and Play Contest. I've included it with permission from the designer, John Kean.
PNP Game of Your Choice - This item is for any PNP game of your choice (with a few limitations). If there's a PNP game that you've seen in the blog that you'd like to try but haven't made yourself, you can win this auction and I will make it for you! I'm excited to find out what game I'll b crafting this year!

You can find links to all these games as well as hundreds more at the The 2017 Jack Vasel Memorial Fund Auction. Bidding is open until November 14th, 2017. I hope you'll consider bidding on these or the other games to support this incredible charity!

New Games

With one exception, all of the games discussed today were released in the 2017 Solitaire Print and Play Contest (or earlier Solitaire PNP Contests). I've been able to play many of these games and can personally attest to their quality. If you enjoy solitaire games at all, you owe it yourself to try these games! Welcome back to the PNP News! It's been awhile since I posted but I am determined to feature all the new PNP games that came out in the past few months. I've been gathering up all the new releases and updates since May and will be getting caught up over the next few posts.

Obviously there are a lot of games from the past five months and this post doesn't come close to getting them all. Once I got 50 games ready, I figured that was a good place to stop and make the first post. The next batch of games will be posted soon.

There a lot of solitaire games in this update so I've divided the new games categories into Solo and MultiPlayer games to make it easier to find them. I hope that you'll find something you will enjoy in the amazing list of games below!

Hi Everyone!

I just wanted to let you all know that the PNP News is still alive and well. I am just running behind, as is getting too typical for me. My family has had a very busy summer this year. Even in the best of times, it is hard for me to balance work, kids, the Solo Contest, tinkering with game design (maybe I'll eventually have final files for 9 Card Siege ready), and this blog at the same time. Rest assured though that I've been tracking new PNP games and will be posting them soon. I'm planning on posting groups of 20 to 30 games in a series of posts to catch up for the last few months.

I apologize to being delayed to those who have geekmailed me about their games and especially to those who are good enough to support this work on Patreon. I am incredibly grateful for your generosity and don't want to make you wait for content.

Be on the lookout in the near future for the first in a series of posts discussing the new PNP games of the summer. I have the first 30 games almost ready to go! Also, I will be posting a guest post to Morten Monrad Pedersen's excellent blog, in which I'll be discussing the history of the Solitaire Print and Play Contest. I'll link here as well when that comes up.

Thank you again for your patience everyone.

Hello everyone! Welcome back to a long overdue PNP News post.

First off, I'd like to thank everyone who took the time to respond to the poll I posted two weeks ago in this post: Future of the PNP News. I was amazed to get 439 responses! I honestly didn't know that many people were reading the blog. I'm going to post some updates based on the feedback. If you're not interested in that, just scroll down to get to the new games.

Reading through the poll results and the comments on the blog were very interesting. It confirmed a few thoughts I've had.
1 New Games are by far and away the biggest thing that people read about in the blog with 99% of respondents ranking them a 4 or 5.
2 The lowest scoring item on the blog was Pay-for-PNP content. 63% of respondents ranked it a 1 or a 2.
3 PNP Updates also scored pretty low. 43% of respondents marked it a 1 or 2 and only 29% marked it a 4 or 5.
4 Redesigns had 43% of people marking it 4 or 5 but 38% marked it a 1 or 2.
5 Kickstarter games with a free PNP option were surprisingly split. It was ranked equally between the 1s and 2s and the 4s and 5s. I would have expected this one to be higher since the games are free, but often times the games are low art or demo quality so I can understand people being less interested.
6 Finally, the contest info got a majority of people indicating it was valuable to them.

In this update you'll notice a few changes. First off, I'll be cutting back on the amount of games I cover for updates and redesigns. I've merged them into one section in this post but it may not always stay that way. I'll be trying to keep this updates to games with significant updates or redesigns. So, for example, I won't necessarily be covering every fanmade map for Coin Age or things like that anymore. I don't think that is as interesting to most people. If it is, you can stay current by subscribing to your favorite games.

I have also not covered any PNP Contests in this post. Although the majority of people said they are interested in it, it's not an area I think I can adequately cover, especially since I'm not usually going to be able to update every week. If this is really valuable to people I can try to list current contests with their important dates. However, I will no longer be including contest info on individual games. i.e. I won't be saying that Game X is entered into a contest. I will be including a link to the Current PNP Contest Info Thread in every post.

I'll continue to provide free coverage for new PNP games that are available for free. I'd like to remind those interested that the blog does accept advertising to cover PNP games that aren't free. This includes crowdfunded games or games sold on other sites. I've done some analysis on the links I post to crowdfunded games and they typically get approximately 100 to 200 clicks for a game. Sponsors can buy advertised placement for as low as US$5.00. (This is done with the permission of BGG admins.)

I'd like to thank everyone again for you comments and patients while I organized this post. I hate getting far behind but sometimes life gets in the way. A huge thank you as well to those who have donated to the blog on Patreon or Paypal. I really appreciate you supporting all the work that goes into this blog!

One other theme I got in the comments was that people wanted to read more of my opinions and recommendations about PNP games. This is something I'd like to do anyway. I haven't written any reviews in awhile and I'd like to get back into that. I certainly won't be able to do so every week but I'd like to post one as much as I can. I'll post links to the game reviews on this blog when they're available.

I'd love to be able to do more. I've wanted to start doing interviews again or writing content about PNP crafting techniques. I've even thought of starting a PNP News Podcast. But realistically I don't have time for that right now. Perhaps those are things I can revisit in the future. For now though, I think the items I discussed above will be all I can do.

Please continue to give your thoughts and feedback on the blog. The best ideas have come from the community so please keep them coming!

That's probably enough wall-of-text. I hope you enjoy the news and find some awesome new games to play!

Hi everyone!

I'm sure you've noticed that there have been some big delays between posts recently. Since starting the blog in 2012, I've had several changes in my life. I've had another child and changed jobs a few times. Each one of these changes has cut into my free time. Perhaps impacting my available free time the most has been my career progression. When I started the blog, I was an individual contributor at work. Now I'm a director with people reporting to me and several other responsibilities. I don't have as much free time at work (really any) and when I go home from work, I'm more inclined to play a game with my family than write about PNP games. These changes have been very positive in my life, but they've really limited the time I have for this blog or other fun activities.

I feel bad for those who have supported the blog on Patreon because I haven't been able to deliver more regularly. I'm trying to find the best way forward. However, I honestly don't see myself getting any less busy in the near future. I've been thinking about how to move forward with this blog. I've been thinking of cutting back the categories I discuss in the blog to just New Games. But I'd like to get some feedback from you. Which parts of the PNP News are most important to you? Do you read the New Games but skim over Rethemes? What could go and what do you love the most?

Poll: PNP News Poll

Please take a moment to answer the poll and leave any comments below.

My possible ideas for moving forward:
1. Eliminate sections other than New Games
2. Reduce the amount of info I include about games i.e. remove the short description of the game that I write. This is probably the most time-intensive part because I have to get familiar enough with the game to write a few sentences about it. I would also stop creating images for games that don't have them. (If the designer can't bother to post an image, then it won't have one.)
3. I don't love the idea, but maybe it's time to hand the blog off to someone else or maybe just get a "cohost".

One change that I will be making for sure is that I'll be killing the Sister Site. Print and Play News on Blogger. I really wanted to be able to provide interviewers for designers in PNP Contests and other PNP articles, but I have been far too overwhelmed with real life to do much with the sister site. I won't delete the site, but I won't be advertising or updating it anymore.
