Hostage Negotiating

My blog to document my plays of Hostage Negotiator in The 100 Play Challenge. I will also try to outline the game rules. The game has not yet been released, so it might be interesting for some people and will help better understand the sessions.

has been publishing great Hostage Negotiator session reports. Three have been posted so far:
1. Adventures In Hostage Negotiating - Abductor 1
2. Adventures In Hostage Negotiating - Abductor 2
3. Adventures In Hostage Negotiating - Abductor 3

These session reports are interesting for a number of reasons.
1. Peter explains in detail what choices the Negotiator has, how to prepare for future events, how to mitigate bad dice rolls, etc,.
2. He utilizes some strategies which are not obvious to inexperienced players.
3. He spices up the session reports with screenshots from a Hostage Negotiator app he is developing

Some of You may not know, but there is a Kickstarter campaing running for Salvation Road by Van Ryder Games.

Update #2 announced a crossover negotiator card for Hostage Negotiator based on one of the Salvation Road characters.

This card will be given to people who back the game, but there is also a separate pledge level if someone just wants the negotiator card.

A few days ago the Hostage Negotiator 10-pack has arrived.

It looks great.
Unfortunately ;-) I already shipped 6 copies to other Polish backers.

P.S. Apologies for the rest of the world supporters. You're going to have to be patient just a little longer.
Now You know how we usually feel

I haven't updated the blog for some time now.
The two main reasons were becoming a happy father for the third time in December and devoting my spare boardgaming time mostly to stuff related to Hostage Negotiator. This involved playtesting the third Abductor Pack, but also work on Abductor Pack #4.

who let me help with the design of the fourth AP!

The official announcement is here and here.

My response was/is:
mikolajl wrote:
I wanted to thank everyone for Your kind words, congratulations and encouragement. I truly love this community.

And of course to thank AJ for taking me in on the “ryde” with Hostage Negotiator.

Working on the new expansion has been the focus of my gaming in the last weeks. I didn’t even have time to record all my plays. The Abductor Pack is starting to look pretty good. When it is tested and print ready I hope to write up some sort of summary (with pictures ;-) ) about the whole Hostage Negotiator endeavor and publish it somewhere here on the Geek.

It has been a lot of work, but also (above all) a lot of fun.
I believe a few factors contributed to this enjoyment:
1. It is a great thematic game. I mentioned its advantages in my blogpost. The Abductor Packs bring even more variability and replayability.
2. The enthusiasm of the community is very rewarding.
3. Working with AJ has been fantastic. I admire how he is growing Van Ryder Games. We both share love for thematic games and “immersing the theme in the mechanics”. We also quickly established close rapport which made playtesting interesting and efficient. With the last Abductor Pack we managed to accelerate progress by bouncing ideas off each other. I could always count on AJ to offer a great solution when I was stuck.

To sum up, thank You again. I hope You will also be able to have lots of enjoyable moments with Hostage Negotiator soon

I has been a long time since the end of the Kickstarter campaign, unfortunately work has got in the way of gaming, so I didn't have time to to share my impressions until now.

For those that didn't follow the Kickstarter the totals were as follows:
Backers: 1188
Goal: $5,000
Amount pledged: $47,092

I was really surprised and happy with this result. I was worried that the fact this is a solitaire only game would deter people from it.

I'm not sure how to interpret this result.
1) The campaign was run very well.
2) It is a very good game.
3) Lots of people want to play solitaire games.

A am sure points 1) and 2) are valid. I'm not sure about 3).
I would like this campaign to be a sign to producers that it can be profitable to design and publish solitaire games, but I guess we will have to wait if that is the case.

At least there are more and more games with solitaire variants produced (for example Imperial Settlers).
