Reducing Doug's To Play List

I've been playing games for 40 years, and usually have a small pile of things "in the queue", waiting for some table time. I will try and use this blog as an incentive to get some of these games on the table, and played. As I work through the list, I will tap in some rambling impressions.

A very quick update ...

It has been a few months since the Knizia Challenge wound up, and we have been recovering in ice baths, and playing other games such as Adventure Land, Flamme Rouge, Root and so on. A tiny game called SEAL Teal Flix has arrived and is dominating the table now.

About three weeks after the challenge completed, I unexpectedly received a note of congratulations from Castle Knizia, which was a nice surprise.

Mark Johnson, long time friend, also reached out and asked me to talk about the challenge on his wonderful BoardgamesToGo podcast. The episode (#186) landed a few days ago and you can find it here on the BoardgamesToGo Season 14 Geeklist.

Some games I’ve played in the past couple of weeks.

Root
I didn’t know anything about Root. I first heard about it on the way to a funeral a few months back, when I received a text from Spieledeluxe while on the train. I think the message was nothing new was in, but Root was expected in today or tomorrow. Root? What was Root? I did a little research on the train, and it didn’t sound that appealing. I read things like “asymmetry” and “COIN”. Asymmetric games are difficult to pull off, and COIN ... that gets a big “ugh” from me.

Still, I did my due diligence and the more I looked, the more intrigued I became. I was beguiled by the cutesy production, yet slightly put off by the verbose rulebook. I tried to read the rules a few times and nothing sank in. Root is one of those games where you need the player boards and pieces in front of you for the rules to stick. To be fair the rules are terse and excellent, but not an easy standalone read.

Previous recaps: January | February | March | April | May | June | July | August | September

I have a problem ... well several ...
We played 575 Reiner Knizia games in a little over 8 months, 115 titles five times each. At the end of each series of five plays, I tossed a game component into a box. At the end of this challenge I had 114 pieces from 114 games tossing around.

Help me get them back in the correct boxes. Name the Knizia title the component came from.

Conditions
d10-0 Doug has the final say.
d10-1 One entry per player.
d10-2 Answer in the format “1. Twister, etc”
d10-3 One point per correct answer. I’ll be lenient. Perhaps.
d10-4 Six points if you can tell me the 115th game, missing here but you can do some detective work.
d10-5 Maximum score is 120 points
d10-6 Geekmail me at dougadamsau your answers - don’t post here.
d10-7 If someone gets them all correct, I’ll shut it down early.
d10-8 Otherwise I’ll run it until the end of the month, and award a prize to the highest correct total.
d10-9 Ties ... broken in favour of the earliest entry received.

Prize ... 575 GG!

We have a winner with a perfect score of 120!

Challenge progress on September 1st
Previous recaps: January | February | March | April | May | June | July | August

At the end of 2017, after fiddling with the Board Game Stats application on my smart phone, I purchased the Challenges in-app purchase. On a whim, I set up a Knizia challenge to play each my my Knizia titles 5 times each in 2018. Since January, the challenge has grown...

Challenge Completed
September 14th saw us cross the finish line and complete our challenge, with our 575th and final game, Beowulf: The Legend. What started as an 86x5 game challenge grew throughout the year up to 115x5 games, which added 145 individual plays to the task.

Thanks to Janet (474 plays) and Harrison (258), who had to live through this “experience”, along with friends Tina (14), Debbie (14), Asher (5), Kylie (3), Nadine (3), Roger (1) and Roberta (1) who chipped in with plays. And of course, thanks to everyone who contributed to the posts throughout the year with support and comments. Lastly, thanks again to Reiner and Karen for the unexpected box of goodies back in March - I am still grinning foolishly to myself over that one!

August has seen the challenge approaching completion, and we have an end date in mind, with a celebration planned sometime next month. We diligently chugged our way through fifty or so plays, spurred on by the approaching finish line, and also by playing some stonkingly great games.

July saw the number of games left to complete, easily displayed in the BG Stats app, dwindle down below 50 to go. We continue to average a game in the evening after dinner, and five or so over the weekends. July saw the number of Reiner Knizia games played crest 500, and every game in the challenge (to date!) has now received at least one play.

Ludo
Our fifth month of the challenge saw Doug at home with a week’s leave, to recharge and perhaps make a dint in the challenge. I ended up averaging four games a day for the week, and we had fun revisiting some neglected titles.

On the 28th of May, gaming came skidding to a halt, as we had a new arrival in the house. We adopted a one year old male ragdoll cat. The owner was desperate to re-home him, as the cat had been having a tough time settling after an enforced move. We visited him and decided to take him home with us. In a rather strange coincidence, his name is ... Ludo ... apparently named after a character from the movie Labyrinth.

April saw our lowest monthly total of games played so far this year, but still averaging around two per day. We just seemed to be rather busy this month, and I subconsciously lifted the foot a little, as we seem to have the challenge well under control. On rough count, we have completed five plays for 54 of the games, with 51 still to go. Around 20 of these titles we haven't played a single game of ... yet!

March saw consistent progress as we chugged our way through the collection. I’m a little astonished at the end of each month to see we’ve played 80 odd games. We tend to play one or two each weeknight after dinner and several on the weekends. Given that Knizia games are usually not that long, and we tend to play fast, the completions rack up quite quickly.
