After 299 playtests performed by 36 external playtesters we’re now all but done making the Scythe solo mode. The only thing we’re still tweaking is the hardest difficulty level, which we recently created, since a few of the playtesters were getting results that were quite a bit better than the rest of us.

Scythe Automa Wave 2 - status as of the 25th of September

Wave 1 of the Scythe Automa playtest is ending now - After two and a half weeks of frantic playtesting and rulebook updates with 173 playtests done by 29 external playtesters. Adding this to the playtests of the multiplayer game and we’re at 940 external playtests of Scythe – maybe we can make it to 1000 before we’re done .

In my last status update I mentioned that one of the two major risks I saw for Scythe Automa was that its simplicity might be exploited in game breaking ways. Therefore, I put it through the grinder and discovered sort of a gamebreak, where the player could delay the game end, which was to his advantage, since in late in the game the player is normally scoring faster than the Automa.

I’m sorry.

I haven’t been keeping this blog up to date. A large part of the reason is that not that much happened on the Euphoria expansion project for a while, since we’ve been busy with other projects and so there was not much to report. When things started moving again Jamey got more directly involved in the process because we were preparing for Gen Con and thus the need for large status reports to him disappeared.

The fact that Jamey was in the loop, didn’t really help the rest of you, so this post is intended to let you know about the first external playtests that was made with the Euphoria expansion.

David and I have been iterating rapidly on Scythe Automa, since we last discussed my ideas. Here’s a status report on where we are right now.

Executive summary:
- We’re making progress faster than expected.
- The current Automa is streamlined significantly compared to my original proposal.
- The Automa seems to work well already, though it’s the difficulty level is off.
- I hope to reach out to external playtesters in 1-2 weeks.
- The alternative solution of not trying to mimic a human player and basing the Automa on the Factory didn’t work out because of too high randomness.

It’s time for another status report

Since the last status report our focus has been on the markets and recruits and on getting started on proper rulebooks instead of the collections of notes that we’ve been operating with. The latter has become particularly important since we’ve added a new member to our team, Darren Anderson, who was also a playtester on the Euphoria base game. Let’s just say that I don’t envy Darren trying to make sense of the expansion based on my hastily and inconsistently written notes.
