Thematic Colors of Gaming

Weekly wrap up of games played. A few years ago I was lucky enough to find a great game group, Louisville Card Board Gamers. Since then I've become good friends with several people in the group. We often game every weekend, even when there is no group event.

Here are my lists for the year. The only criteria I had, was "new to me". I also don't allow games to be on multiple lists. I mean no offense to anyone with the games I didn't like. Just because they didn't work for me, doesn't mean they won't work for someone else. I hope everyone can find games they love.

I thought 2021 was one of the worst years for games, but December has turned it all around. I got so many keeps for my collection. More now than the rest of the pandemic era. Infact, it might be the most keeps ever in a single month ever, as I'm very picky on what I keep. Not because I don't enjoy games in general. I can have a great time with an ok game. But I keep my gaming money in a bubble, and I keep limited storage space. So I don't get new games, without getting rid of old ones.

Obviously this is a volatile list, being during the pandemic still. Limited plays on each game, almost all 2 players or solo. Unlike last year where I had a giant pile of unplayed games I got during 2020, I've played most this year. Last year I said I would revisit the list, and I did. That won't be the case this year. This is the list! But as plays and player count hopefully goes up in 2022, my thoughts can and likely will change on some of these games.

Enough rambling, on with the lists.

______________________________________________________________________

We'll kick it off with the disappointments. These are games that didn't live up to my own hype I had for them. And certainly doesn't mean I think they are all bad games. Some of them are good.

--DISAPPOINTMENTS--

#10

Ruins: Death Binder
Poor rulebook, small cards and a bad rulebook doomed this one. I did like the reverse deck building and hope to see it in something else.

Reverse deck building is unique and totally works
Duel layer player boards
Deciding on how to spend your xp is tough

soblue Pretty bad rulebook that seems to think you know 1/2 know the game
gulpgulp Mini cards
gulpgulp Severe lack of artwork (I think just the monsters, none on your cards or events)

Beyond the Sun
First 1/2 of this game is really good. But I HATE the end game. Also it looking like a prototype doesn't help.

Tech tree the game is accurate, and pretty cool
Area control game done really well too
Seems to have really good replay value

soblue Physical version looks like a prototype, with a high price tag
gulpgulp An end game I loath

Daimyo: Rebirth of the Empire
A big mix of mechanics that work well. However they decided set collection should be a major one. And it's boring set collection. Also just too long for that. Shame, cool theme.

Really cool theme/world
Several mechanics all mix and flow nicely
Ruleset, cards, all explained well I don't think we had to look anything up
Miniature in the KS version are pretty nice, though flattened

soblue Slow start
soblue Boring set collection
gulp Goes on too long both in rounds and time

______________________________________________________________________

#7
External image

Unicorn Fever
One of the most unexciting racing game I've played. Both in abilities and the actual race. For a gambling game that's unforgivable.

Zany theme works great through all parts of the game
Fun to see elves as the mob in a fantasy game

soblue Mostly uninteresting abilities throughout the cards and unicorns
gulp Race phase is unfun

______________________________________________________________________

#6
External image

Vampire: The Masquerade – Rivals Expandable Card Game
I was super excited when this got announced, but then I seen the designer. And sure enough, it delivered exactly what I expected. A serviceable game with cheap graphic design that is never doing anything exciting.

Combat is well done when it happens
Cool neutral city deck, something I'd like to see in other games
Different factions due player differently with different goals

soblue While there is some good art, several are terrible
soblue Graphic design feels cheap
soblue Never exciting or tense

#5
External image

Bullet♥︎
It's a good puzzle, but it's not an amazing one. And lvl99 really cut corners with the production. At this point, I think I'm done with their games.

Very unique playing characters
Deluxe bullets are great
Good amount of content in the box
Mostly easy to understand
Plays fast (even without realtime)

soblue Very abstract
soblue I can't imagine playing without the deluxe components
soblue Not having special bullets seems like a missed opportunity
gulp Horrible card quality and lackluster player "boards"

______________________________________________________________________

#4
External image

After The Empire
It was good. But the tower defense is very lacking and super fiddly.

Buying new cards for your tableau feels significant every time.
How it generates enemies works really well
I like how you gain resources from taking damage

soblue Do the obvious math puzzle
soblue Overly brutal catch up mechanic
gulp Fiddly AF

______________________________________________________________________

#3
External image

Escape Plan
How you make this theme with no tension or excitement is truly impressive. Especially because you can see how much effort was put into it.

Great look, bits, graphic design
Mostly good iconography that you will learn fast

soblue Really uninteresting decisions
gulp Absolutely no tension or excitement

______________________________________________________________________

#2
External image

Lawyer Up
I thought this game was going to be so amazing. Instead it's just play your hand out in the obvious way. Really cool drafting, and I do plan to play it again. So one of the few that'll get a 2nd chance.

Very thematic if you get into the theme
Drafting step is very cool

soblue A lot of situational abilities that get played without effect
gulp Each round is mostly do the obvious with your hand

______________________________________________________________________

#1
External image

Summoner Wars (Second Edition)
I think this game is inferior to the original, in many ways. I hate the changes made to health and damage. Everything hits too hard, too easily. It makes champions not feel as special. Makes gates wimpy. And just makes the whole game feel more swingy, while having less swingy dice. An amazing accomplishment.

Artwork

soblue Custom dice should have been an improvement
soblue Too bloody too easily
soblue Nearly everything (especially champions) feel less unique
soblue Feels more like a 1.5 than a 2.0

______________________________________________________________________

Several of my Worst Games of the year. I hope everyone loves the games they pay their hard earn money for. I love the hobby is so big now there is something for everyone. These where not for me. And this list ironically gets better each year because games get better each year. Or is that it's just more out there and easier to research these days?

--WORST GAMES--

#10
External image

Homesteaders
This game falls apart in the final 2 rounds. Cards come out to just buy points (I hate that). But it's worse than that. The market system in this game makes no sense.

Great bidding system
Cards laid out well.

soblue Head scratching marketplace
gulp Super boring buildings final 2 rounds

______________________________________________________________________

#9
External image

Steam Works
This game just goes on and on and on. And it's not interesting enough to do that.

Felt unique
Unique player powers

soblue Mostly doing boring things
gulp Massively too long and messy for what it is

______________________________________________________________________

#8
External image

Flip Ships
I felt this was one of the more random dexterity games I've played. I don't need that in a dexterity game.

Exactly what you'd expect
Doesn't bog down with too many powers or rules
Very cool flipable cover

gulp One of the most random dexterity games I've played

______________________________________________________________________

#7
External image

Brutality
Way too deterministic combat with open information. Too bad, the minis are spectacular.

Crazy good miniatures
Game certainly has a moody dark feel throughout

soblue Game seems to give you way more tokens than you'll ever use (guess that's better than not enough)
soblue Not enough hidden info
gulp Deterministic combat

______________________________________________________________________

#6
External image

Arkham Noir: Case #1 – The Witch Cult Murders
Ruined for me by always having to take the left card of the display.

soblue Didn't give me Arkham vibes
soblue A game of do the obvious

______________________________________________________________________

#5
External image

Kamigami Battles: River of Souls
Felt all over the place in terms of balance.

The Nightfall combo system works well

gulp God/Temple powers seem game breaking

______________________________________________________________________

#4
External image

Quantum
It features my most hated mechanic in gaming, a 1d6 roll vs a 1d6. And you do it a lot, back and forth. It's a terrible loop.

Ships with the pips worked great
Fun upgrade cards

gulp Terrible repeated gameplay loop
gulp 1D6 vs 1D6 combat

______________________________________________________________________

#3
External image

Dinosaur Tea Party
Worse than guess who, even in art.

gulp Worse than Guess Who

______________________________________________________________________

#2
External image

Nidavellir
I really liked how you upgrade your bid tokens. Everything else I disliked.

Great bidding system

soblue Boring gameplay in every way
soblue Blah set collection
soblue Same special cards to buy every game, and all always available

______________________________________________________________________

#1
External image

Lost Explorers
One of the driest, dullest, uninteresting borefests I've ever played. I've had more fun with broken bad games, at least we got laughs out of them.

gulp Dirt is jealous of it's dryness
gulp Wooden spoon is jealous of it's dullness
gulp Drying paint is jealous of it's boredom

______________________________________________________________________

Next up is surprises. In some cases there where games I didn't really know. Some I expected to little of, etc. These are not in order of how much I like the game, but instead in order of how much of a surprise they were.

--SURPRISES--

#10
External image

Dice Hospital
Really enjoyed the dice puzzle and drafting. Though I would never want to play the physical version over the digital.

An abstract that is thematic
Fast turns and little downtime
Good drafting choices

soblue Not sure of replay value
gulp And certainly not interested in a physical version

______________________________________________________________________

#9
External image

World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King
It's still pandemic, but in a theme I love. The quest system is weak. Really weak. I plan to change mine.

Much better production than expected
Fun characters and powers
Dice system works well

soblue Weak quest system
soblue Healing overpowered
soblue Much too easy

______________________________________________________________________

#8
External image

Devil May Cry: The Bloody Palace
If you like dungeon crawls or minis fighting and want something different, this is it. I really loved the card play, but it's a really long game like all steamforge games.

Fantastic card system
Unique playing characters
Enemies have their own AI decks
Lots of variety with the all-in ks
Mini board play works well

soblue But doesn't add enough to the game to justify having it
soblue KS exclusive expansion a must
soblue Dead downtime
gulpgulp Massively too long to play

______________________________________________________________________

#7
External image

Draftosaurus
Nothing special, but yet we played it over and over.

Plays super fast
Enough to think about to stay engaged

soblue Mechanics/theme begging for a gamers version
soblue Nothing to mix up game to game

______________________________________________________________________

#6
External image

Terraforming Mars: Ares Expedition
It's surprising for me to say I liked anything with Terraforming Mars in the name.

Looks great. Art, components and graphic design.
Great action system
Choosing what cards to keep is much harder than TM
Good color coded system for temperature and oxygen

soblue Missing the board play and milstones
soblue Board too small to track stuff well
soblue Doesn't feel fresh at all

______________________________________________________________________

#5
External image

Dinosaur Island: Rawr 'n Write
Wasn't expecting much. What I got is the best dinosaur park building game yet.

Park building that actually matters
Good variety and good advance rules
Better excitement system than board game version
And no fiddly visitor stuff

soblue Roads not as important as they should be
gulp Still not feeling like dinos

______________________________________________________________________

#4
External image

Arkham Horror
Surprised I finally got to play this game that had eluded me for so long. Even more surprised, I enjoyed it. Like more than most other cthulhu games.

You don't spend the 1st hour of the game gearing up to play the game
Random loot and set up, makes for a fun time
I really liked how your stats work, and how the enemies moved

soblue No overall narrative
soblue Some players aids would be nice
gulp I loath the 5 and 6 success dice system. Always have.

______________________________________________________________________

#3
External image

Roll Camera!: The Filmmaking Board Game
I really didn't think I would like this much, as no one has really nailed the theme. But they did it here. It needs a little more though, which it's getting.

Love the thematics and the puzzle of set design
Good variety in problems and powers
Dice placement coop works...

soblue But there isn't enough spots
soblue And some are used every turn when not working on set
soblue I would have preferred a different art style

Expansion looks fantastic but isn't out yet

Unforgiven: The Lincoln Assassination Trial
Hearing 7 wonders duel killer made me chuckle. But then something unexpected happen. I stopped liking 7 wonders duel. And around that same time I got this and liked the mechanics better in most ways. The theme is a big con though. My next retheme project.

Improves on 7 Wonders Duel in several ways
Fun dice system
Interesting tug of war over Jurors
Low victory point count, makes them all important
Pretty good quality for a low price point (particularly the chunky dice)

soblue The bag laughably doesn't come close to working with the dice
soblue The Objection action does seem a bit OP
gulp Theme not for me

______________________________________________________________________

#1
External image

Fast & Furious: Highway Heist
I can't believe a Fast & Furious game was one of the most fun of the year. I can't believe what I got in the box for 15 bucks. I can't believe how thematic they made it.

Theme shines 100%
Nice production for small price point
Stunt card system needs to be in more games
Unpredictable enemy and event system
Fun puzzle to figure out that keeps slightly altering things
The scenarios look pretty different

soblue Only 3 scenarios
soblue Sausage fest character choices, with Mia somehow being omitted
soblue Weird pegs for characters
soblue Odd insert design
soblue Unlikely to get an expansion despite the great ruleset

______________________________________________________________________

Here is the top 10 of the year. Some built on future expectations.

--BEST GAMES--

#10
External image

Carnegie
It's a rare day I enjoy a dry euro. I really would like to play the physical version as on bga it's hard to keep track of everything.

Fun worker placement system
Fun upgrade system
Route building more difficult than it appears
Unique upgrades to buy...

soblue That are always the same, and 1st player has a huge advantage due to limited amount
soblue Easy to mess up
soblue Feels there is probably a right way and a wrong way to play
soblue Lackluster end game scoring system

______________________________________________________________________

#9
External image

Underwater Cities
The card worker placement system is fantastic. Weighing what you need vs what bonuses you can grab by doing something else is really cool. And you feel like you are actually doing something as you build your city out, it's a good feeling.

Fantastic card/worker placement mechanic
Good feeling of building your city out
Cards broken into ages

soblue Passive abilities > action cards
gulp Buying end game point cards

______________________________________________________________________

#8
External image

Last Aurora
Doesn't do everything great, but well. And it's a unique mix. One of those games dead at retail though due to ks stuff.

A nice mix of mechanics that somehow all work well together
KS stuff is nice and worth it
KS stuff, expansion, sleeves, all fit in the base box (not the playmat) and it's insert

Expansion map looks crazy (in a good way, just haven't played)

soblue KS stuff is sort of must own
soblue Alpha board just a less interesting beta board
soblue Getting new people early is huge

______________________________________________________________________

#7
External image

Fired Up
The most shakey game on this list. As I've only played it at 2p and it was clear it needs more. But man what a cool unique game. Were you play as the fans trying to manipulate the outcome. And it changes round to round. Can't wait to play this with more players, will be at the top of the queue.

Awesome theme
Fantastic turn to turn goal system
Art, graphic design, and production all fantastic
With expansions, ton of variety

soblue Insert doesn't hold sleeved cards
soblue People already damaging the board (careful un/folding)
soblue Not the best with 2 players

______________________________________________________________________

#6
External image

Steampunk Rally Fusion
A great standalone expansion to an underrated dice worker placement game. With the KS exclusives and base game, so much stuff.

With everything
Very cool tableau building mechanics
Fusion additions are great without being overly complex
Drafting works well
So many inventors to pick from
Simultaneous play

soblue AP will be a problem
soblue Can have a runaway leader issue
soblue Lack of guide to combine the 2 sets

______________________________________________________________________

#5
External image

Bloodborne: The Board Game
My big con is likely a major pro for most, a dungeon crawl with deterministic combat. I really liked this game, it's one of the better dungeon crawls out there. It's sure to see more plays once corey and I start gaming again.

Fantastic minis
Deck building works great with dungeon crawling
Clean and quick action system
Good story missions
Easy and quick enemy upkeep
Randomly generated board, with tiles all the same size

soblue Subpar rulebook
soblue Lack of complex deckbuilding cards
soblue Hero abilities feels kind of gimmicky
soblue Too long for what it is
gulp No luck combat

______________________________________________________________________

#4
External image

That Time You Killed Me
I feel like this could be my go to abstract for a long time.

The three boards work great.
Easy ruleset while being thinky
Scenarios seem like they'll be very different from each other
Mostly nice bits and insert

soblue Theme works well, story telling not so much

soblue I'm not a fan of the actually player pieces, too chess like
soblue Boards look pretty boring

______________________________________________________________________

#3
External image

In Too Deep
Great theme, and cool puzzle. I think it will shine with more players. I haven't heard back from them replacing all my damaged components yet, fingers crossed.

Interesting puzzle
Some cool mechanics like the hook system (not aew hook cool)
Great artwork, minis, boards and cards
Plenty of characters to make each game a little different
Is really smooth once you get the hang of it

Table hog
Corruption mechanic probably better at higher counts

soblue Despite great efforts, still feels abstract
soblue Slow solo
soblue No iconography key
soblue Only an insert for the minis

______________________________________________________________________

#2
External image

Destinies
On lots of lists, for good reason. They pulled off a competitive story driven game.

Competitive story adventure game that is just that
Love the exploration and the unknown while working towards a tangible goal
Dice system is unique and simple

soblue Way too small minis. Makes finding what you need a pain
soblue Went on a touch too long, but was a learning game
soblue Reorganizing the game afterwards is a pain

______________________________________________________________________

#1

Batman: The Animated Series Adventures – Shadow of the Bat
Improved upon TMNT, with a ton of content. Using the best batman IP.

It's fricken batman the animated series
Really fun action dice system
Ridiculous amount of content
Great terrain effects
Cool special abilities
Campaign is episodes and playable in 1 long sitting if you want
More objective based than a brawler like TMNT
Tougher baddies and less respawning
Out of turn abilities for heroes and the overlord

Lots of dice chucking in combat
More balanced for 1vAll than coop

soblue Lacks good storage options (though mini trays are nice)
soblue Very hard for 1 player to control 4 heroes
soblue Several misprints
soblue More balanced for 1vAll than coop
soblue Some odd inclusions and 1 big omission
soblue Cheap feeling boxes and cards

______________________________________________________________________

- NEW TO ME -
External image

Dinosaur Island: Rawr 'n Write
All game my plan was just to make the Trex ski park. Not only did I do it, but it was right next to my trex paddock.

This exceeding my expectations for sure. It really didn't feel like other roll and writes. You don't get a shared number everyone uses. Instead it's drafting and worker placement. There is a good amount of cards for replay value, and both the advance rules are really cool. What this does way better than the board game, is you actually feel like you are building a park. The dinos still don't feel like dinos really, same complaint I have in most of these games.

Park building that actually matters
Good variety and good advance rules
Better excitement system than board game version
And no fiddly visitor stuff

soblue Roads not as important as they should be
gulp Still not feeling like dinos

Finally tracked down a copy, excited for this one due to theme

Escape Plan
Even my coffee was having trouble keeping me awake. Vic Mackey pulled off the win.

Well designed, and I had no real rule issues and iconography pretty good. But wow is this game dull. Really really dull. Move here, drop a cube for end game points. Use a few cards to avoid police. That's the entire game. For a theme like this, you'd think there would be some tension and/or excitement. Neither is here, at all. The game was shockingly light. I heard this was his lightest game, but still heavy compared to other games. It's not. It's big and there is a learning curve with the icons, but I feel like I could teach this pretty quick.

So a real dud, despite not having any problems within the design. Just so boring.

Great look, bits, graphic design
Mostly good iconography that you will learn fast

soblue Really uninteresting decisions
gulp Absolutely no tension or excitement

- NEW TO ME (Sort of?) -

Batman: The Animated Series Adventures – Shadow of the Bat
Getting through ManBat, so we never have to fiddle with one of the most overrated characters from the show.

This is just early impressions. But I have played TMNT several times, and this is an evolution on that. The things that made that game one of my favorites is still here. The fantastic dice sharing mechanic. The card driven overlord system. The terrain effects that offer more than usual dungeon crawls. Cool special ability card system for the heroes. Mini campaigns. All here, and some improved. I really like how the overlord can now discard some played cards to do things out of turn. The heroes now have special ability cards that just give them an always on effect. And I love how each mini campaign is an episode from the show.

And man, there is so much stuff! Outside 1 glaring omission, this is pretty much everyone from the show except some 1 off characters. But even then, several of them are here too. I can't imagine you will ever tire of your choices. There is so many, I really could have lived without some of these characters and would have preferred more episodes and other things. But that's a minor nitpick.

One of the biggest and best changes, is to generic bad guys. In turtles, they were weak, you'd kill a bunch. Overlord would spawn a bunch back. Not the case here. They are tough, and the overlord is not constantly spawning more. This make you feel like you are really progressing when you take some down. But unlike turtles, this isn't so much a brawler anymore. You are really after objectives, which is another great change. And they've lowered movement across the board I think compared to TMNT, which sometimes led to gamey cheese.

So whats the bad? Well there is quite a few misprints. Not really acceptable when the game has been delayed for a year now. And from other people, the coop doesn't seem as tightly balanced as the 1vAll. Some ability cards just seem far less useful in coop. That doesn't effect me, as I doubt I'll ever want to play coop. The box quality isn't great. Which is probably why the stretch goal to have a 1 box to hold the entire game didn't happen. The card quality isn't the best, seems like they were cut with a dull blade. I don't understand why the cards needed to have these giant borders around them. The ks boards for your character and dice are great, but the tokens for shared dice is really lacking. And of course, only time will tell if things are actually balanced and such.

Overall I'm very happy with this. IDW closing down and lack of communication and bad communication, there was some worry we'd ever get it. I have no idea how to condense it down to take up less room. Maybe I can save some room removing the coop and skirmish cards. And put away some of the lame characters. We'll see, I'm not sure on that yet. What I am sure, this is a much improved TMNT which makes it my favorite dungeon crawl.

It's fricken batman the animated series

FINAL THOUGHTS
That's probably all the gaming I'll get in this year. My lists are done for the year, but it does take a big chunk of time getting them up. Probably new years day.

Hour of Need finally got an update. They were waiting on an errata pack. Why you would keep people in the dark about that for a month, I have no idea. But hopefully should come in some time next month. My friend got in my Townsfolk Tussle, but might be a few weeks before we can meet up. Ascension Tactics, Steamfall expansion and Rush MD all due next month too. What a stacked month.

As for non gaming stuff. I really enjoyed Don't Look Up. I'm looking forward to Cobra Kai season 4, probably cram it all in the next few days. I'm sure I'll get around to Boba Fett. I need to watch Witcher, but I've been stuck in comedy mode really. Mostly just watching a lot of new girl while fiddling with board game stuff.

Ongoing tv watch list.

That Time You Killed Me
I got a few pieces down and thought I was toast, one misstep by my brother and I was back in it. I completed the combat for the win.

This was just the first scenario, so my thoughts are not spoilers. This was great. It's clever, easy to teach, thinky. And unlike Chess, you can really make comeback moves that change the game. First scenario ruleset was good. We actually couldn't make great use of them. I did read the second scenario and man it's crazy compared to the first. Can't wait to see what the others have and what's in that damn hidden promo envelope.

This is a keeper. I feel like I finally have a great abstract for my collection. That I will be able to break out with family, non gamers and heavy gamers. This score I think will go up with the other scenarios. This game sort of makes me think of spy vs spy.

External image

The three boards work great.
Easy ruleset while being thinky
Scenarios seem like they'll be very different from each other
Mostly nice bits and insert

soblue Theme works well, story telling not so much

soblue I'm not a fan of the actually player pieces, too chess like
soblue Boards look pretty boring

Vince McMahon has some news for the original Terraforming Mars
- NEW TO ME -

Terraforming Mars: Ares Expedition
Solo game, was very challenging. I came 2 oceans short of victory. I blame too many first or second action picks matching the AI.

This destroys the board game. Seriously. It looks way better, in every way. Art, graphic design, components. The action system I find to be much better, giving you more control. The color coded system for temperature and oxygen is a big improvement. Changes to some production just being discounts is better. But the biggest difference, is the cards. The majority of the time, I hate the cards I get in the board game. In Ares, every time I had to discard it was a tough decision until late game.

So prettier, faster, better action system. I did miss the board play a little bit. And the milestones. There is nothing stopping them from added those back in. Not a keeper though, as I think I'll like Ark Nova better. And having played TM so much, I feel I've already seen everything this game can do. But certainly a better game than the board game, and one I would play without whining when friends say terraforming mars.

Looks great. Art, components and graphic design.
Great action system
Choosing what cards to keep is much harder than TM
Good color coded system for temperature and oxygen

soblue Missing the board play and milstones
soblue Board too small to track stuff well
soblue Doesn't feel fresh at all

Fast & Furious: Highway Heist
Tank scenario. It literally came down to the last roll of the game. Which Letty came through.

What a surprise this game is. It's great. Sure it defies logic and physics just like it's IP. But it's fun. And not like any game I've played. It generates an interesting evolving puzzle every turn. The stunt deck is brilliant, I only wish there was more of them for each scenario. Event deck that is hard to predict when it will be triggered. Lots of special abilities, that you can mix and match (characters and cars). Everything just worked, really well.

And the components are nice too. Especially for the price point. The insert is a little baffling. And shame we didn't get characters instead of the odd pegs. There was also a point during the play where there was no enemies. Seems like there should be a rule to spawn more when that happens. I had just a turn of twiddling my thumbs. This was due to some odd rolling, and the low player count. Doubt that would ever happen at 3 or 4 players. My biggest gripe is it's a sausage fest. And how in the world do you have this many characters and not include Mia. How? They could add so much to this, it's a great ruleset they've made. Sadly I don't think they will return to it. Maybe some fan made stuff will be cool.

This is a keeper, as you all know I don't keep a lot. That makes this the most surprising game of the year.

Theme shines 100%
Nice production for small price point
Stunt card system needs to be in more games
Unpredictable enemy and event system
Fun puzzle to figure out that keeps slightly altering things
The scenarios look pretty different

soblue Only 3 scenarios
soblue Sausage fest character choices, with Mia somehow being omitted
soblue Weird pegs for characters
soblue Odd insert design
soblue Unlikely to get an expansion despite the great ruleset

FINAL THOUGHTS
2021 was a crappy year for games for me. But it's putting up a hell of an effort in the last few weeks. I think I've gotten more keepers lately than during the entire pandemic. Shelf space is becoming an issue. I've already made a few hard calls, looks like I'm gonna have to move some more.

And were not done. While my top 10s for the year is made, I still got a few games I'd like to sneak in. Townsfolk Tussle is on the way, but just gonna miss this year. I have no idea what's going on with Hour of Need since blacklast has become one of the worst at communication (and for that matter, contra). Ascension Tactics just gonna miss 2021 as well. January already looking packed.

As for non gaming stuff. Matrix Resurrection was a massive bomb. Easily one of the worst reboot/sequels ever made. No Way Home didn't live up to the hype. Hawkeye fumbled a bit with it's final episode. 1883 however, is off to a great start. I feel like I'm watching a star be born right before my eyes with Isabel May. Partially through Don't Look Up. And I've been watching a lot of New Girl in the background. I'm in season 2, I think I'll be to new to me episodes anytime now.

Greetings Earthlings. Since I did my tv show list, had a few folks ask me when my movie list would come. So here it is, and it was near impossible to do. I knew a chunk of what would be on this list. But oh man, the last few spots were so hard to do with so many on the maybe list. Ultimately it just came down to personal bias. I certainly don't think this is "the 10 best movies ever". But my favorites, that often have special meaning to me. Movies I can rewatch often. There is some amazing movies out there, but many of them I don't really desire repeat viewings. I will almost always lean towards flawed and fun over a drama masterpiece. Did I forget some movie I haven't seen in 15 years. I'm sure I did. And you could ask me this list a few months from now and it would probably be slightly different.

Movies from TV shows I disqualified from the list. As far as I'm concern they are part of their tv show. Enough preramble, on with the list.

Watchmen

A movie I feel gets no respect it todays super over crowded superhero market. This is still one of the best ones. It didn't rely on a thin plot to prop up big action set pieces. It has several fantastic characters. And it's ending is one of my favorites.
______________________________________________________________________

#9
External image

Mr. & Mrs. Smith

I'm guessing this will be the one surprise on this list. I just love this movie. I think it's hilarious. With 2 fantastic leads. It has it all in 1 movie. And not to give away trade secrets. But if you like a girl and haven't made your move. Watch this movie with her and it will seal the deal for you. haha

Jurassic Park

The novel was the first real book I read multiple times as a kid. And it was the first movie I refused to watch a trailer for. And it blew away all expectations. It was pretty accurate to the book. It had the best CGI ever by a wide margin when it came out. I still watch this often to this day. It's a timeless classic.

______________________________________________________________________

#7
External image

The Matrix

The whole reason I wanted to get this list up now. Because I'm so worried about the new movie doing damage to the old ones. Those who don't remember, the pre launch of this movie was amazing. The trailers showed very little. It was the first movie with a massive online campaign behind it. And it delivered a far deeper story than anyone expected. Unlike a lot of people, I like the sequels. What I don't like, is the green hue. This was not in the original movie at the theater. It was added because people were too dumb to follow the plot. And as far as I know, there is no way to own the original now. In just a few hours I'll be watching the new one. Fingers crossed.

#6

Guardians of the Galaxy

My favorite Marvel movie. And it's certainly not a perfect movie (weak villain). But it's just a lot of fun with a great cast of characters. Put a bunch of misfits on a ship with a comedic tone, I'm going to like it. Sequel wasn't great but had it's moments. The video game from this year is amazing. But this first movie I can (and have) watched it over and over, it's always so much fun.

#5

Groundhog Day

As a kid I pestered my friend's parents so much they took us to see it opening night. And it delivered more than just bill murray bill murraying. It was hilarious while presenting a story that, at the time was entirely new. Which has of course now been redone countless times. And I still haven't grown tired of the concept. Another timeless movie I can watch any time.

#4

Kick-Ass

When this came out, it was really because the creator was told you couldn't have a violent crass super hero movie. How wrong they were. They even toned things down from the comic and people were still up in arms. It wasn't the shock value for me as much as it was just funny, different take on superhero movies. Which just made it feel really fresh. Mortez was amazing in this movie, and I'm still confused why she isn't a massive star now. I think this remains the only movie I seen opening day, came home and went right back out and seen again with my brother. Oh, this movie also introduced me to my favorite singer of all time.

Back to the Future

My poor parents had to sit there and watch me watch this movie over and over and over and over. Kids in elementary school all watched cartoons and such at the time. Not me. When asked what I was going to be when I grew up, I answered time traveler. I really believed it haha. I traded my GI Joe stuff for back to the future stuff. The first curse words my parents ever heard me say, was me going "Damn... damn damn". I love all these movies. I still watch them on my birthday every year.
______________________________________________________________________

#2
External image

Scott Pilgrim vs The World

I totally understand this movie not being for everyone. But I loved every second of it. I think the directing is really underrated. The action underrated. Just everything underrated really. It has a stacked cast and is very unique, and a lot of fun. Besides Back to the Future, this is the movie I've seen the most. If you haven't ever seen it and are in the mood for something different, give it a chance. It may surprise you.

Fight Club

A movie if it was released today, would no doubt be ruined by the trailers. But back then, not at all. In fact I think my only interest was the actors. It's why I was there opening night. I had no clue how amazing this movie would be. And as a teenager I understood the big message, as I've grown as an adult I understand more and more. Another one I usually watch every year or so. Great cast, great story, great ending.

FINAL THOUGHTS
Before I get asked, some that barely missed the list are Kill Bill, Fifth Element, American Pie, and about 20 more haha. And just a FYI, I do not do a good job of keeping up with movies now. I've said it before, I'm much more of a tv watcher than a movie watcher.

As far as game related stuff, Batman is due today! Gotta cross my fingers for no damage as they are not replacing boxes and they did no packing material. I was going to do a photo overview but it's getting plenty of coverage. It should get played right away. I'm also planning to play TM Ares and Escape Plan before new years hits. So they can be eligible for my top 10 of the year lists.

So how about you all. What's some of your favorite movies?

NEW TO THE COLLECTION
Destinies: Sea of Sand
Finally picked up the expansion I was missing for Destinies. I'm probably looking forward to the final scenario in this box more than any other one.

Dinosaur Island: Rawr 'n Write

Greetings Earthlings. Still solo-ing it up. I am very excited In Too Deep is here. Which should be the first of many kickstarters coming for the next few months. I was planning a photo overview of In Too Deep. But my copy came with damage, so no go.

Only a solo play so far
- NEW TO ME -

In Too Deep
I mostly concentrated on getting evidence filled. Worked pretty well.

The board game reminds me of Theseus. Many simple options to do something simple. Yet it's wonderful thinky puzzle. For the most part, the components and minis are nice. The art is fantastic. Board, minis, cards, all big which is awesome. It is a table hog though. The biggest thing I disliked was solo. As many of you know I don't like solo, but for it to even have a chance it needs to be fast and simple. It's neither here. Near the end of the game I felt the bot's turns where longer than mine. Yuck.

I was worried about too many special abilities on the board, but they are clean and easy to remember. The evidence filling sounded confusing when learning. But once I was playing it was quick and easy to understand. The corruption mechanic just isn't that interesting in solo. Probably in 2 player too. 3 is probably the sweet spot for the game. 4 or 5 might be too chaotic where you can't set yourself up.

Hopefully they'll come through with replacements. As I feel good this will have a permanent home in my collection. It's unique, pretty, and the corruption mechanic might be really cool with more players.

Interesting puzzle
Some cool mechanics like the hook system (not aew hook cool)
Great artwork, minis, boards and cards
Plenty of characters to make each game a little different
Is really smooth once you get the hang of it

Table hog
Corruption mechanic probably better at higher counts

soblue Despite great efforts, still feels abstract
soblue Slow solo
soblue No iconography key
soblue Only an insert for the minis

Solo deckbuilding usually goes smoother for me compared to other solo games
- NEW TO ME -
External image

Helionox: Deluxe Edition
I spent too much time getting cool, non scoring cards.

I think this is a really solid deckbuilder. At first I was liking it. But it is very repetitive. Seemed like it needed some better end game goals. But if you like quick and clean deckbuilding games, you might really like this one. And unlike In Too Deep, the solo part was super fast and easy. You spend 95% of the time playing your stuff.

Fantastic art
Clean and simple rules

soblue Rulebook is bad
gulp You just keep doing the same thing all game

#10
Board Game: Tales & Games: The Hare & the Tortoise

Tales & Games: The Hare & the Tortoise
There have been several of these secret betting kind of games. I still think this is the best one. I got rid of it because we had played it a ton. Mistake. Not only do I miss playing it, but there has been several times I wish I had it to play with family.

Great artwork
Gamers, non gamers and family members can all enjoy this game
Races usually come down to the wire
Animals move differently

soblue They could have did alot more with the track, alot more
soblue Fox and Sheep seem OP
soblue With 4 or 5 players, if no one else bets on your animal can be hard to push them along
______________________________________________________________________

#9
Board Game: Heroes

Heroes
Has anyone made anything even close to this game? Nope. This is a real time competitive card game like Magic. A bunch of friends had this, so I dealt my copy away. They've brought it out ZERO times over the years. Yes it's cheap, but I only want it with the promo cards and those are really hard to find now.

Simply fun to play
Real time mechanics work great
Plenty of options and replay value
Good 70s artwork style

I think a non real time version would work well, for those that don't like that. Yet there is no official variant in the game.

soblue Though fun, repetitive
soblue Dice colors could be better
soblue Could have use more variety in the creatures and spells, instead of so many copies of each.
______________________________________________________________________

#8
Board Game: Wasteland Express Delivery Service

Wasteland Express Delivery Service
This is like the only pick up and deliver game I've ever liked. I got rid of the game, because pandasauras pissed me off. My brother liked it too, and it's a great production. Hopefully I can track down a copy with promos.

Insane production
Fast moving turns
Clever market
Changing buy/sale makes this better than other similar games
Cool victory conditions
Better with PvP rules
High variety in map set up
Love the dashboard and upgrade graphic design

I don't understand why blue screen of death needs to be in every game

soblue Standees are too big
soblue Each deck could use some more cards
soblue Not really a fan of the artwork on cards
soblue Allies are mostly meh abilities
soblue Sometimes luck plays too big of a part
______________________________________________________________________

#7
Board Game: Kung Fu Panda: The Board Game

Kung Fu Panda: The Board Game
I love the movies. And this game is fun. And the minis were nice and I'm sure my brother and I would have enjoyed painting them. Another game that annoyed me with it's KS content and thus I got rid of it. See all the stretch goal enemies didn't get rules. They claimed that was not part of the stretch goal. This is why I haven't decided if I want to commit to Skyrim, despite the game being right up my alley. Maybe those stretch goals don't have rules either?

But I regret getting rid of it. At the time of playing it was torn if I liked it or Escape better. But this has one massive advantage over escape, I can teach it to people and we can just play it.

Kung Fu Panda!
Fantastic minis
Easy to jump in and get playing
Map being premade is more strategic than escape...

soblue At the cost of set up time
soblue Not a lot of variety
gulp Not nearly as exciting as Escape
______________________________________________________________________

#6
Board Game: Dark Age Z

Dark Age Z
I could be wrong, but I think this is the only game I've played that pulls off working together and screwing over your neighbor at the same time. And I don't mean kind of works, it works brilliantly. It is mathy, and doesn't always go over well with others. It's theme isn't for me at all. Those reasons are why I dealt it away. But in my 1000+ games I've played, this one I always think of when someone asks about a semi coop game that works. I would like to own again.

Unique
Semi-coop done right
Euro with a theme
Cool card driven gameplay
Well balanced worker placement phase

soblue Time travel was an odd thing to add
soblue Mathy
soblue Questionable mission balance
gulp Needed a bit more stuff everywhere
______________________________________________________________________

#5
Board Game: Gears of War: The Board Game

Gears of War: The Board Game
One of the first solo games I tried, before I found a game group. I played through the entire campaign. It was fun, though very combat heavy. I regret getting rid of it because I made friends with 2 big gears of war fans. And I think we would have had a lot of fun playing through it all over the years. Especially when there wasn't many dungeon crawly games we liked. I looked into getting it again, but it's just too pricey. And with Batman arriving soon, it likely will have no place now.

I can't do my and soblue faces for this one, as it's just been too long since I played it.
______________________________________________________________________

#4
Board Game: Clockwork Wars

Clockwork Wars
Clockwork Wars is still a very unique game. One that I really liked. I even made custom stickers for all the wooden bits for my copy. Problem was, at the time we had a lot of area control games. And we had played it a ton, so I got rid of mine. We played it with someone else's copy before the pandemic got here, and it was a ton of fun still. And now I have just 2 old epic area control games in my collection (and just 1 on the way out of all my ks stuff). I still feel it needs a 2nd edition, maybe some day it'll get it.

Very fresh feeling
Simultaneous hidden "worker placement" is amazing
A great amount of replay value, no 2 games the same
Very cool overpowered discover cards
The crazy mix of magic, religion and scifi works well
Fantastic insert

- Some will not like how powerful the discover cards are

soblue 9 round game removes a lot of the fury and tension
soblue Wood discs for workers. Minis would have been awesome. Stickers should have been in atleast
soblue R&D Always gets taken first. Needs different way to deal out those cards. Which the designer has added through official variant. I still like our way better.
______________________________________________________________________

#3
Board Game: 51st State: Master Set

51st State: Master Set
I had the pre order edition of this. I even spent a ton of time making a spreadsheet and getting the game to have the same balance with both "expansions" included in all games. But then I got a great offer on it, and thought we had played it enough. Friends where not happy, and I wasn't happy either. And after my brother loved empires of the north, I think he would love this. But I don't want retail. And the pre order version has disappeared. Maybe some day I'll stumble upon it, but I'm not going to hold my breath. Shame too, the latest expansion looks really cool.

Pre order edition looks so cool
Pretty easy to understand
All cards attackable, but expensive
Good artwork

soblue Scoring does not get more dry than this game
soblue Once you get going on a path, things just run on autopilot
soblue Head scratching decision to remove the theme of faction actions, compared to the original game
______________________________________________________________________

#2
Board Game: Galaxy Defenders

Galaxy Defenders
Out of all the dungeon crawls we played over the years, this one got the most plays. It was messy, but it was a fun. I got rid of it, because Sword & Sorcery got announced. It was going to have more story, perfect. Sadly it removed the most interesting part of the game, the movement. I actually got this again a few years ago, and like a dummy I got rid of it because I hadn't been able to get my friends in for a game. I wish I was more patient. It's unlikely I'll be able to find full ks pledge for a reasonable deal ever again. I was hoping they'd do a 2nd edition of it, but apparently sword and sorcery sold better for them so they are sticking with it.

Movement that matters
Fantastic AI
Lots of fun scifi stuff
Unknown things moving around the map is cool
Hexagon maps that are quick to set up
Tons of content with expansions

soblue Dice chucky
soblue Hard to organize with expansions
soblue Strickly combat driven
soblue Lots of tokens
soblue Unclear or odd rules here and there

Codex: Card-Time Strategy – Deluxe Set
When this came out, I hailed it as one of the best dueling games ever made. It was my game of the year, and rank #4 on my all time games list that year. What happened? Retail happened. I couldn't believe the expansions didn't have the required binders to play the game. They didn't even come with a few extra cards needed for multiplayer. The game was expensive, and card quality wasn't great. I felt completely ripped off by the expansions. At the time they offered no way to get the books (they do now). So I hobbled together a deluxe set. That had it's own problems, like a ridiculous box size. All the frustrations I sent the game packing (it also didn't help that warhammer conquest was going through a resurgence with my game group at the time).

Well I miss it. My problems had little to do with the game itself. I think it's the best version of warcraft ever made in tabletop form. The great news is this game is set to be redeemed in the form of a christmas gift and a black friday sale. I still have my old core box, and I am hopeful I can get the game in 2 core boxes. And yes, this time I got the real official binders for each of the 6 factions.

So many decisions
Strategy and Tactics are both high in the game
Six very different factions to play
Cool mix of mechanics
It does all those mixes better than everyone else
Phenomenal hero system
A very low amount of luck
Not an LCG or CCG. It's complete. Which will make learning and mastering the ins and outs awesome.

soblue AP can be a major problem
soblue Some really hokey art
soblue Sirlin games other IPs feel forced and out of place
soblue Way too long at 3+ players
gulp Overpriced and missing needed components at retail
gulpgulp Deluxe box is laughable big and heavy

FINAL THOUGHTS
Well hope you all enjoyed this list. Do you all like top 10s? If so, let me know and suggest some others. I have fun making them.

I wish board gaming would pick up. I bug my brother all the time to play some. Hoping to at least get in a few before the years out, non solo. I have made my preliminary list of my top 10s of the year. I'm really hoping batman and townsfolk tussle get here before years end.

I haven't been watching much new tv. Loving Hawkeye so far. Finished live action cowboy bebop about 30 minutes before they announced it's cancellation. I started rewatching that 70s show in the background while doing other things. It's inclusion in my top 10 shows of all time totally justified. I'm on season 6 already and it's been like 10 days. Just love this show. I was the same age as them when I watched this originally, so many things I related to and still do. Whats next I really don't know. I know I want to continue Dexter, Arcane and Foundation. Of course the final season of expanse is this month. I love that a video game with Drummer got announced.

If I don't blog in the next 11 days. Rock On and Happy Holidays!

Terraforming Mars: Ares Expedition
Oh goodness, I own a terraforming mars game. This probably won't end well.

That Time You Killed Me
I did not!

Maniacal
Love the theme, worried about the dice chucking.

Yedo: Deluxe Master Set
Didn't back this originally because all my friends got a copy. But I want my own to try the coop mode, and to cherry pick the missions and such for group.

Escape Plan
Finally found a trade for this one. High hopes for it. Especially hoping my brother likes it as I have not played many heavy euros with him.

Scarface 1920
Another facebook ad costing me money. How I missed this when it was on KS I have no idea. Love love love the theme. And the mechanics seem pretty damn good too. Not going in for all the deluxe bits though. One of my new years resolution is to stop wasting money on pimping games.

Well this was both better and worse than expected. As expected, the campaign was just the game stripped like maracaibo. Here it's much worse. This game is actually pretty light and simple. You wouldn't tell that from looking at it or from the rulebook that seem to make it look way more complicated than it is. The cloud card gimmick works great. Upgrading works fine, but isn't exciting at all. And neither are most of the abilities you can get during the game. They are ok, and it all locks together well. But ultimatly, just isn't that interesting or fun. Except for the cloud sleeve gimmick. Unlike maracaibo though, I wouldn't say no to a game if it hit the table.

The cloud sleeve gimmick works great
Light, smooth and easy to teach

soblue Upgrades and board play not fun or exciting
soblue Still doesn't know what Legacy means
gulp Full game stripped to make a lackluster campaign
gulp Which makes set up annoying and longer when wanting to play the real game. And I just don't understand why this keeps happening (the stripping the game for a uninteresting campagin)

The coop version of Circle of Truth?

Sprawlopolis
Thought I had it won, but lost by like 2 points.

I can see why it's popular, but it didn't do it for me. Every card having all the location types isn't nearly as interesting as Circle of Truth. And not having the drafting part to make those tough decisions hurt it too. But it generates a cool puzzle with a little amount of cards for those who like that.

Once again they do a lot with very little cards
And likely makes a great little game waiting for food or something

soblue Just doing what you can with the card you draw
soblue I didn't like the cards all having the same locations

Slay the Spire?

Ruins: Death Binder
I did a pretty good job keeping my deck big. Maybe to well as it wasn't as focused as it needed to be near the end.

If you tell me I'm playing a card game, then hand me mini cards, I'm gonna be pissed. Have no art on those cards, more pissed. Then fail to find an answer in the rulebook, rules video, online guide and forum on the very first card. I'm gonna get even more pissed. So keep in mind I started salty.

This game is like a slay the spire, with a huge twist. You don't buy cards. Instead you start with all the cards, and you whittle it down to make a good deck. It's a really neat concept, and it's one that totally works here. However it's not as fun as regular deck builders, and the joy of adding new powerful cards to your deck. The monsters you fight all done well, the graphic design is good, duel layer player boards. It's a good game.

But I'm not a solo gamer. And this one did nothing to make me want to play it over... well Slay the Spire.

Arkham Noir: Case #1 – The Witch Cult Murders
I took too much time and lost.

The ideas in this game work. But they all fall apart for me because of 1 design choice. You must always take the left card of the row. This severely limits choice or interesting decisions. And makes it pretty much a game of do the obvious. You can burn it to play a card in your hand, but again, when obvious.

soblue Didn't give me Arkham vibes
soblue A game of do the obvious

Can I finally like a pandemic game? The answer is yesno
- NEW TO ME -
External image

World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King
This was a solo play. And it was a cakewalk of cakewalks.

Pretty much every review talks about how it's too easy, and it is. Because of 2 problems, I think fixable problems. The 1st is healing. It's too strong. You can even be in an enemies space. Which also devalues the defense card making it the weakest of all the cards. The fix is to make it only 1 dice, or no where enemies are, or both.

The 2nd, is quests. Basically you can show a card and get a boost. That is a non decision. And it makes most of the quest symbols not really important. Why isn't it give up a card like the other pandemic games? I have no idea. Because that would make the non decision into a tough decision. It would make it harder while adding more decision making to the game.

So I will probably try both these out instead of just making the pandemic deck harder. I think it'll make for a funner game with more decisions. And the rest of the game I like. It still feels like pandemic, but one I can tolerate and play with friends who don't game. The dice isn't swingy, but adds just enough to make you capable of having a great roll which is fun. I liked they got rid of exploding virus for abominations. Characters have fun abilities. And really, they could add to this game. I don't guess they will because they never add expansions to these spinoffs. But I bet we will see some cool fan made stuff. This is a keeper that needs a little work. A damn pandemic game sitting on my shelf.

Much better production than expected
Fun characters and powers
Dice system works well

soblue Weak quest system
soblue Healing overpowered

FINAL THOUGHTS
This is the end of my Journey seeking out solo games. They are just not for me, never going to be for me. Yes there has been a couple out of a thousand games to prove that to not be true. But to me, I'd rather just video game than set up and play through a solo board game. Or play one on iOS with cpu opponents.

That doesn't mean I will never play a game solo. My brother is laid up for the next 5 weeks after a surgery. So a few I will play to get a feel for them. KS stuff. Like In Too Deep and Hour of Need. Batman will not, because I know I'll like it. Of course all these games that will be painted are going to be arriving at the same time. I know for sure we are painting batman and townsfolk tussle. I will be painting In Too Deep if I feel it's a keeper after some solo plays.

So with very little board gaming sadly happening. The next few posts here will likely be photo overviews of some of those games. TV wise I'm slowly getting through my Lost rewatch. Turns out it was a poor choice. It's just not as good as the first time. I've been rewatching That 70s Show in prep for the new season coming next year. I've been watching the new Cowboy Bebop, almost through it. Probably finish it before starting wheel of time. Dexter has not been going well, I'm like 1/2 through the 2nd episode. It's been so bad I wish they would not have brought it back.

Ongoing tv watch list.

NEW TO THE COLLECTION

Cowboy Bebop: Boardgame Boogie
Wanted Space Serenade, will have to settle for this one.

Ultra Deluxe 2D Arcade Mega Fighter
Turbo Edition!

Wrestlenomicon
Jason and I split this one. Because if their is even a hit of wrestling we are in.

Portal: The Uncooperative Cake Acquisition Game
It was cheap and I like the theme.

Shardhunters
Another cheap one, that I wish had a different theme. But the simultaneous trick taking looks pretty cool.

Vs System 2PCG: The X-Files Battles
I love X-Files and actually like VS. I noticed this was starting to disappear likely for good and wanted to get it. I'm sure some day I'll get an awesome X-Files game, but until then.

Fast & Furious: Highway Heist
Black friday deal. Didn't think much of it but every review was kind of glowing that I checked out. I love me some car movement puzzles so who knows could be a nice surprise.

Codex: Card-Time Strategy – Core Set
One of my all time biggest flash in the pan is back. It won my game of the year when it came out, and ranked #4 on my all time list. Then it was gone. What happened. Well I let major frustration over it's retail release bug me. Then after tracking down a deluxe set it was a massive pain in the ass too carry. And at the time we were really getting back into conquest. I let it go. I still think it's one of the best deck building dueling games ever created. And with a black friday deal, I wanted to own it before it was gone forever. I still have my old core game box. I'm really hoping I can work some magic and fit the whole game in 2 core boxes. That would be awesome.

Greetings Earthlings. A list I've been wanting to do for awhile. But man it's a tough one to do. Ultimately, it was a balance of how much did I like it and how much do I like rewatching it. There are some great shows I don't care to rewatch again (like Breaking Bad). There are some great shows I've never seen (like the Sopranos). Or some I haven't seen a really long time and dunno how they hold up (like Quantum Leap). This is not a list of the best 10 shows, but my favorite 10 shows. I can enjoy things with flaws.

That 70s Show

A show for me I can always put on and laugh (well except maybe the last season). It certainly should have ended 1 season earlier. But the first 4 seasons where so funny. It was one of the only comedies I've ever been able to sit down and watch with my entire family. Seems unfairly hated just because of people don't like Kutcher. One of my favorite things they did was always keep takes of people laughing or making mistakes. Made it feel more authentic. Can't believe out of all the shows out there this one is getting a new season next year.

Battlestar Galactica

Unlike a lot of people, I liked how BSG ended. This show just felt so ahead of it's time. In 2004, a deep story and great special effects was just so rare. It's held up pretty well. I did hate the "final cylon" storyline and promotion. So many crazy moments from the show, and an amazing opening credit score.

South Park

This one should be higher. I quote it more than any show easily. It's longevity has hurt it, especially in the last 5 years or so. For every great episode, there is a terrible one. And while it's always done social commentary, the best episodes to me are the ones just focused on the kids being kids. Which they do less and less every year as they get older. Hard to believe for almost 25 years I still never miss an episode.

Alias

A criminally underrated show. It never gets the praise it deserves. Only ran for 5 seasons. 3-5 was uneven but certainly not bad. 1-2 are masterpieces. With season 2 having the most crazy cliffhanger ever. The series finale is also one of the best ever. Seriously, if you've never seen this show, go give the pilot a chance.

Friends

Friends is the most watch show on the planet. For good reason, it's so rewatchable. It's so easy to put it on while you do other things and get some laughs in. Really I'm a fan of the 90s sitcom. I still rewatch many to this day.

Jack Bauer will always be one of the most iconic characters in TV history. Only like 2 bad seasons out of nine. This show was one of the first on TV to have movie like quality. It was really a head of it's time. And it killed characters long before it was the cool thing to do on tv. There have been rumblings of a new season. I sure hope it happens as Jack does need a better conclusion that what it got. Tony too.

Firefly

I can't believe with all the reboot craze, firefly hasn't happened. How? As most of us know, this show got treated like poo and canned after 1 season. Thankfully it did get an great movie to tie up some things. If it got more seasons and kept up it's quality, it would be higher. It's crazy how many amazing episodes it had in such a short run.

Supernatural

15 years is just insane for a show like this. After the horrible season 7 I thought it was the end of the line. But it was able to recover. Not season 1-5 great, but at least not terrible. It always produced a few amazing episodes every year. Not all stories worked out the way they should have. This is one show with a crazy fan base, and honestly the female base did severe damage to the show. I am one of those who does not like the ending. It doesn't ruin the show or anything, but I would have preferred something else. Still in those 15 years they made so many amazing episodes. Another show I watched from day one, and one of the first my brother and I always sat down to watch together.

The X-Files

Oh how I love the X-Files. It's been about 4 and 1/2 years since I rewatched it, and just doing this list I really want to rewatch it again. I adore the XFiles. Just something about it, was really special. The episodes just pull you in. It's a shame the final season was such a mess Anderson has quit forever. I'm still happy it got to make a few more episodes after season 9. I'm surprised they didn't move forward with a spinoff with the new agents they introduced, and with Mulder in it (david said he would do it). So many iconic episodes this show made.

Some folks may not remember, tv shows didn't come out for you to buy. X-Files was one of the first. And it was $130 bucks a season. I loved it so much I remember working 2 jobs for a summer just so I could get them. And people complain now when a whole season doesn't go up in 1 day for them to watch with their 12 dollar subscription.

Buffy

Buffy just mixed comedy, drama, horror, fantasy, teen angst and super heroes so fantastically. It's not a perfect show. It had bad effects early on, some really really bad episodes. Change in the character and tone later (not for the good). And yet with all that, it's still my favorite. Side characters and bad guys was just written so much better than other shows. I really like the Angel show too, and it's certainly in the top 20. Buffy had better comedy. So many great characters you get fully invested in, not just the main one.

FINAL THOUGHTS
Hope no one minded this one being off the board game path. I wish I was getting in more board games! 1/2 this list was actually pretty easy to make. I already knew my top 4, and the rest of the top contenders. Did I forget a show when I was working on this list? I'm sure I did. I've watched a lot of shows in my life. I will probably do a movies list, but that is a significantly harder list to make. I certainly know some that will make the list, it will be the order that will make it so hard. And also memory and trying not to overlook ones will be difficult.

So how about you all. What's some of your favorite shows?

Sleeping Gods
Yes I've finally tracked down a copy. I traded mine original as soon as I got it to score Chaos In The Old World and expansion. Something I had been trying to get for nearly a decade. Can't wait to try this one out. Though I dunno if I should do easy mode or not out of the gate. People seemed very split on the best way to play it.

Greetings Earthlings. Today we look at the last game that will ever be made by IDW Games. It is a semi coop minis game. I believe there are coop rules (but I forgot to confirm). And while it looks and sounds like Arcadia Quest, early reviews suggest otherwise. I have not played it yet. I just got the game in, and it's not getting much coverage. So I decided to do a photo overview for the game. Keep in mind my camera sucks, but should give you a pretty good ideal of what's in the box.

This is the retail version, which DOES INCLUDE the pre order bonuses. I do not know the reason why they did this. Could be they were going out of business and thought why not. Maybe the pre order count was too low, and it wasn't cost effective to make a second box. Or they needed to recoup costs at retail and that's easier to do without missing content. Sucks for those who paid way more. But great for people who like me who couldn't come up with the funds at the time.

External image

Like a dumb dumb, I forgot to take a pic of the box. So you will get a stock photo instead. It is a pretty chunky box.

External image

Inside there is 2 fitted trays. The top has the minis, which has nice figure holes to lift it up.

External image

This is underneath. This does not need to be taken out. Underneath the tiles is the boss minis that are pretty chunky (photo on down).

External image

A few punchboards, rulebook, story book, scenario book, bonus scenario and a few other things.

External image

Rulebook is 32 pages. But it's not all dense. Lots of photos, good font size. Seems to cover every thing in detail.

External image

Game includes 9 double sided tiles. There are no overlays or smaller tiles.

External image

About 85 magic sized cards. Colors pop great on everything.

External image

Some boss reference cards (they seem to be pretty different). Basic enemy reference. And a board for a few tracks that spawn monsters and the event deck.

External image

Each player gets a play board (up to 4 players). Each player will always pick 1 Ghostbuster and 1 Men In Black. They each have a regular ability that is the same for all players, and each character will have their own ability and starting equipment.

External image

Main tokens each agent player will be using. Traps to score points, energy used for weapons and sometimes bidding. Wound tokens and money.

External image

The remainder of the tokens. Most used to set up the scenario. Scenario specific tokens, spawn points, doors, gadget tokens. A few tokens at the top for various things.

External image

Dice and play color rings. They are hard plastic, but I checked a few minis and had no trouble getting them on and off. Why so many dice? Well this game uses a dice tower.

External image

The story is a spacecraft crashed into the ghostbusters place. Green dice will go in this, and at certain points players will remove spaceship parts of their choosing. Dice that fallout will spawn monsters. This is cool as it adds the illusion of control and unpredictability. The dice tower does not have a spot in the insert. It is magnetic. And pretty thick. Not seen this before, but seems to be pretty good.

External image

The 7 selectable ghostbusters (sorry for the glare Winston).

External image

And the pretty awesome (though kind of small) minis. Sadly they removed Ray's cig. That will get added back if we paint it.

External image

MiB choices.

External image

More great sculpts. Really love they got all 3 worms.

External image

The 3 regular enemies in the game. Very different from each other, big guy is a nice sculpt.

External image

The bosses (and J for a reference). These are nice chunky minis.

External image

The starting equipment for each agent. Throughout the campaign you can level them up. And finally we have regular items.

External image

Good graphic design on them. They are however a weird size. Too wide for mini american sleeves, mini chimera sleeves, and some mini euro sleeves. I did find a mini euro to work, height is way off.

External image

One of my favorite things in any game, event cards. The yellow icons move up tracks to force the pull of spaceship part out of the dice tower. There are 6 red events, which I believe are optional for more difficulty.

External image

Gadget cards which can be picked up from the map. As you can see, they have covered the IP well.

External image

This is made by the comic writers. And comes with a story book (each page looks like this). Around 25 pages I think.

External image

This is a campaign game. I believe I seen rules for 1 offs in the rulebook. This is the structure. Basically do a level, boss fight, for a total of 3 times.

External image

Unless you include the extra scenario, that has you pitted against both movies main baddy. I can't imagine ever not playing it. They have their own event deck (10 cards).

External image

Even outside the story book, each scenario has lots of flavor.

External image

Scenario layout. Seems well laid out. This game will have some set up time for sure though. But at least you won't be having long setup for monsters, decks and such.

External image

I was quite pleased this insert fitted sleeved cards. Feels like forever since I got a retail game that did this. The tokens though where a tight squeeze in their baggies.

COMPONENT IMPRESSIONS

There is very little to complain about here. This is a top notch production. Everything, minis, cards, boards, tokens are all great quality. This was clearly made with love. The double side boards are really hard to see their number. I'm guessing it might be easier by picture. I hate when different dominations of money are the exact same size and color. And there doesn't seem to be enough 1s for 4 players. I would have liked to seen some cards to change up the regular monsters. But maybe some scenario rules do that. Will have to see how well the magnetic tower holds with dice clanking around inside. Really love the artwork, graphic design and colors used throughout. I do wish the hero minis where a tad bigger. Fantastic insert for the most part. Though I may need to photograph where everyone goes. But overall, this is a top tier production. IDW Games going out in style with a labor of love. Let's hope it plays close to how good it looks.

Made with love
Fantastic insert
Great artwork, graphic design, and popping colors throughout
14 character choices
Minis look great
All the gameplay content at retail...

soblue Which sucks for those who paid a lot more for those exclusives
soblue Money tokens problematic
soblue Hero minis a tad small
gulp Dice seem to be 50/50 ish, my most hated kind
gulp Semi coop is very hard to pull off

An easier to play race for the galaxy?
- NEW TO ME -
External image

New Frontiers
I really felt I did a poor job selecting beginning techs, but I squeaked out the win mainly due to an 8 point planet that I spent the game building towards.

Well I liked it better than the other race games. But they are all the same. I can respect they are well designed, but just not for me. I find them boring and long winded to do basic things. I mean I spent most of the game building military to score 8 point planet. How exciting!

Certainly felt like race for the galaxy the board game
I like how the planets are planet shaped
Much easier to teach and play than regular race

soblue Producing and selling is so slow and boring
soblue Lack of events or anything interesting
soblue Goal system is weird (in how they come out/reveal)

Sobek: 2 Players
A good late dump of corruption to my opponent allowed me to pick up the win.

I was surprised by this one. It was fun for a set collection game. It's hard to say after just 1 play, but it seems pretty solid. I usually enjoy puzzle movement games. The random tiles with points seem too swingy. And corruption mechanic should have been used to better effect. But I will certainly be giving it another go. Interested in it's bigger brother now.

Good movement puzzle
I like how you can't see the character powers
I like you can time actions, to not always be moving on the board

soblue Swingy point tiles
soblue Undercooked corruption system

Dice Hospital
I really thought I was gonna win this one, as discharged the most and 2nd most in the game. But came in last. Guess I didn't make good use of my player power.

I also liked this one, but I can tell I'd never want to play a physical version. It would be very fiddly compared to how smooth it is on bga. But I really liked how they took an abstract dice puzzle and gave it lots of theme. Turns are fast with little downtime. I like how you just draft upgrades instead of having to buy them (which would require more mechanics). Everything just works well here. Interested to try out the expansions.

An abstract that is thematic
Fast turns and little downtime
Good drafting choices

soblue Not sure of replay value
gulp And certainly not interested in a physical version

Now time for one of the worst board games I've ever played
- NEW TO ME -
External image

Lost Explorers
My plan was to get lots of tokens so I could then try to do a bunch of missions at once. Didn't work out.

Well the game isn't broken. There is that. One of the driest, dullest, uninteresting borefests I've ever played. I've had more fun with broken bad games, at least we got laughs out of them. Nothing in this game even comes close to an interesting decision. You collect tokens, which are super easy to get whatever you want. To spent them in the most unimaginable way, where the only thing that matters is if you got some luck in your missions to combo them together where you don't have to spend as many workers. Workers which don't actually do anything but stand on a spot that mission says they need to be. That's it, that's the whole game.

gulp Dirt is jealous of it's dryness
gulp Wooden spoon is jealous of it's dullness
gulp Drying paint is jealous of it's boredom

Roll Camera!: The Filmmaking Board Game
This was a solo play. I was able to use my power to great effect (removing the bad events) to score extra time. Which I needed to make the sets. I scored solidly.

Finally a game that nails the making the movie feel. I think what I liked most, and was most surprised about was the set. I love you have to build a set to make a scene. It's thematically cool, while being a tough but simple puzzle. I'm not a fan of the artwork, but it's ok. I like the dice placement, but there isn't enough spots. I had one too many rounds where I had an extra worker with nothing to do. Not a good feeling. This seems to be addressed in the upcoming expansion.

Is it worth it for solo? I never feel qualified to answer that question as I just don't enjoy board games solo much. There is good variety here, but at it's core you are doing the same thing every game. I could see me busting it out solo again, not something that happens often to a game. But I'm more interested in playing multiplayer. This game is likely on ice until the expansion gets here though. Just because it looks great. More slots, more variety, and more theme.

Love the thematics and the puzzle of set design
Good variety in problems and powers
Dice placement coop works...

soblue But there isn't enough spots
soblue And some are used every turn when not working on set
soblue I would have preferred a different art style

Expansion looks fantastic but isn't out yet

FINAL THOUGHTS
It was nice to get a few positive surprises. Sadly though, I don't think I'll get in much more online play. One of my friends just complains non stop. Deal out player powers, complains. Explain the rules, complains. Take the card he wanted, complains. Looks at his options on his turn, complains. Forgets something that was explained, complains. Misreads something in front of him, complains. Thinks the cpu calculates his score wrong every game, complains.

And here I thought a frequent trade/seller on this site would be the worst thing of the week. This dude had to fix previous trades because he sent me wrong games. And tells my 4 games for his 1 I proposed, is as is. I ask him what that meant. He said even if he sent the wrong game or it was only 1/2 complete, I'd still have to honor my end of the trade. You know, because he's messed up so much before, which often cost me money shipping him things back. Unreal.

Anyways. I do miss gaming. So maybe I'll just do some random games with strangers. There is certainly good stuff on bga now. I do plan to solo some big KS stuff I got coming in. I just got in ghostbusters x men in black, I think it might have a solo mode. You can look for a photo overview of it either tomorrow or sunday.

Still been binging the Goldbergs, but I think I'm finally to burn out. Which is great since this month is stacked with new shows to watch. Arcane, Dexter, Yellowjackets, Cowboy Bebop, Wheel of Time, Hawkeye, and a few others I plan to try out. It's crazy. There is a few movies too. Game wise I got Guardians of the Galaxy, and it's amazing. The best super hero video game ever. And just one of my favorite games period. I plan to keep it, after buying it new. Which is very rare for me. Can't wait to play through it again. They nailed the characters. It actually hurt the movies some, since some characters are done much better here. I get disco elysium in a few weeks. And I'm sure I'll get a few things during xbox big black friday sale.

NEW TO THE COLLECTION

Clank! In! Space!: A Deck-Building Adventure
Finally tracked this game down. I was close to really liking the original game. I think they tackle my issues with it here, and it's a theme I like more. I got it with both expansions.

CloudAge
Giving Pfister another chance. Probably his last if it's another dud for me. But I really dig the theme and love racing across a map.

Sanctum
I repicked this up. After the crushing disappointment of diablo 2, I'm ready to give it another chance. First time I expected more out of the monsters, but have better expectations that they are just there as a resource. I really liked the endgame compared to others I played it with. Mainly because I was a diablo fan and they were not. I think my brother could really like it.

Ghostbusters x Men in Black: Ecto-terrestrial Invasion
My collection sort of has a big giant hole in it when it comes to these types of games. And I think this is just the theme to elevate it for me. Unlike so many, I don't hate semi coop. I just think it's very hard to pull off. I know it has full coop rules if it can't pull it off.

I now keep a geeklist of all uplayed/preordered games

Greetings Earthings. Hard to believe it's already been six months since I last did this list. Which is traditionally how often I make this list. 6 months ago about 1/2 the list was due to make it here before this list. How did they do? None of the KS made it to me in that time. Once again they are all poised to deliver around the same time, soonish. I feel like I said that a year ago on this list. At least I have a new #1 to be hyped about for awhile.

Warehouse 13: The H.G. Wells Expansion
DUE: Q2 2022
I'm very happy this is seeing the light of day. I was worried it wouldn't due to the pandemic. HG Wells is one of my favorite characters. Jamie Murray is one of my favorite actresses. And Warehouse 13 the board game is one of my favorite hidden traitor games. It's a very underrated game.

HG Wells/Jaime Murray
New big bad to go against
More agents to play as

soblue This expansion didn't get new abilities for the agents

Long Shot: The Dice Game
DUE: Q1 2022
I have long struck out looking for a horse racing game. I have only 1 roll and write. Hoping this can finally give me the gambling on a race I'm looking for.

Horse racing
Nice ks stuff

soblue Other gambling games have been mostly misses

Stationfall
DUE: Q1 2022
I 100% talked my friend David into backing this. BSG is his favorite game, but he's a heavy euro fan. This is those things mixed together. I worry it has way too much going on. We'll see.

Heavy euro take on BSG
Despite being heavy, doesn't take itself too seriously

gulp Learning this looks like a pain

The Librarians: Adventure Card Game
DUE: Q1 2022
This is the only game on the list, I didn't back or know anyone who did. I just felt the KS was overpriced. I did play the game with the designer, and I really liked it. It helps I love the show. But sort of reminds me of FFG coops, but with improvements. Also features my favorite kind of deck construction.

I love the IP
Pod deck construction
Plays good

soblue Way too expensive on KS
soblue From a company with a poor track record of components
soblue KS exclusive character is one of my favorites

Slay the Spire: The Board Game
2023?
I think Slay the Spire is one of the best digital card games of all time. I'm stoked to see what they do with it here. I think the KS is very near.

Video game is amazing
Multiplayer

soblue Almost no information right now

Reality Shift
DUE: Who knows, it's academy games
I think this game looks really cool. And I love the KS modes and exclusives. Sadly, academy games has done an awful job with communication. I think this was backed last year, and still no pledge manager yet. Unreal.

Very unique looking
I love racing games
KS adds some cool modes and cubes

gulp Lackluster communication on the KS

Cyberpunk: Gangs of Night City
DUE: Unknown
Despite what many think, I love Cyberpunk 2077. I don't have the best track record with CMON games though. I heard a rumor this was an evolution on the godfather game. I sure hope that's true, because that game had an awesome core.

Cyberpunk 2077
Possibly an evolution of Godfather game

soblue Likely to be too pricey
gulp Like way too pricey (see masters of the universe)

Crisis at Steamfall: Genesis
DUE: Q4 2021
This is one of those expansions to fix a base game. We quite liked the base. But it certainly has rough edges. The revamp here looks fantastic. This is a heavy euro with lots of theme. Very excited for this expansion that could elevate the base into one of my favorites.

Core game has lots of great mechanics
Love we are getting minis, a bigger board
Every part of the game improved

soblue Designer doesn't seem to have usa shipping locked down despite getting the goods soon.

Contra: The Board Game
DUE: Q4 2021
I feel like I bought this years ago. But it's finally coming. The unboxing looked great they did recently. I love the ideal behind MDS system. None have been a homerun though. Usually because they do too much and I have balance issues. But here, it's 4 levels and 4 bosses. They have a ton of time to balance that out. And I love the ideal of 1 health and a push your luck ish gameplay system.

Gameplay of having 1 health and push your luck
Low number of stages/bosses should be better balanced than previous games
Not a sea of minis

soblue I am not a contra fan
soblue Isn't 2d like the video games

Rush M.D.
DUE: Q1 2022
Seems to be delayed over and over and over and over. I haven't played the original, but this looks so fun. I love the theme, and I personally love real time games. Finding others to play it with might be challenging.

Love the theme and look
Real time with timers works great usually
Tons of content/replay value?

soblue Does seem like a table hog
soblue Not gonna be for everyone in my group

Gaijin
DUE: Unknown
No BGG page for this one yet. Awaken Realms. Not a huge KS supposedly. But I wonder if awaken realms can keep to that. Delays mean no haha. Shockingly not the only cyberpunk worker placement game on this list.

Theme I adore
Not a massive campaign game

soblue Not much info or pricey

Ascension Tactics: Miniatures Deckbuilding Game
DUE: Q4 2021
Many dueling games have struck out, while waiting for this one to get here. I think that's helped me regain my hype for this one. For me I don't like deterministic combat. My brother does. So we'll just have to see how it lands.

Innovative mix of deck building and skirmish games
Models look like they will be fun to paint
Foundation for lots of unique scenarios

soblue Ascension lore lost on me
soblue Deckbuilders usually need consistent expansions to stay fresh
soblue Deterministic combat

Agents of SMERSH: Epic Edition
DUE: Q1 2022
A new version of one of my favorite games of all time should rate higher. But they have made some worry some changes. And they don't have my trust, as you can tell Big Trouble In Little China got over streamlined at some point. But that' doesn't mean all their changes are bad. I like the cleaner board. The change to the end game. And I kept my original to use the far superior dice system. It should be compatible.

Original one of my favorite games of all time
Duel layer boards, better graphic design
Better end game, and in game goals

soblue Worried about over streamlining
soblue Company struggles with editing and it's a ton of text
gulp Changed the original fantastic dice system for lame generic one

Townsfolk Tussle
DUE: Q4 2021
I'm a big fan of roguelites and boss battlers. Sadly all the other board games that do that, are crazy expensive and big campaign games. Love this one isn't either. My brother can't wait to paint it, even if we don't like it. Such cool minis. I think the main concern here is 1d10 chucking. But hopefully the charm overcomes a badly dated mechanic.

Amazing art
Roguelite boss battle
Good amount of content for the price

soblue 1d10 chucking could kill it for me

Cyber Odyssey
DUE: Q4 2022
I'm really surprised this didn't do better on kickstarter. It has a ton of content, and some really cool game ideas. This one would probably be rated higher, if it wasn't so far away. And with uniqueness and a ton going on, it's hard to get a good feel for how it all actually flows. But I'm very pumped for it. I think this could be a massive sleeper hit.

Theme
Open world video game inspired
Offers lots of variety and gameplay systems

soblue Why no buzz?
gulp Could be a bit heavy on rules

Perseverance: Castaway Chronicles – Episodes 1 & 2
DUE: Q1 2022
I love Mindclash. But over the years I have found their games hard to get to the table due to length. This one falls in that category. But I just couldn't say no to the theme, gameplay, and the mindclash production. I dunno how I feel about it being 2 similar games. But hey, at least you get good bang for your buck being 2 games.

Original theme
Dino survival, in a scifi setting
2 games in the box
I usually enjoy tower defense

soblue Game length too long?
soblue Too much iconography
soblue Dislike how "adventuring" works

Human Punishment: The Beginning
DUE: Q1 2022
Yet another Cyberpunk themed game. I was hoping that would happen with Cyberpunk 2077 video game being all the rage. And here we are. Remember a few years ago no one was making these. I'm so happy it's being used more. And I feel all the cyberpunk games on this list are different. This one is chasing Battlestar Galactica. Which is a very ambitious goal. But I do believe it's a very achievable one. BSG is old. And with everything, is sort of a rules mess. It's core remains great. Which is the core here too.

Cyberpunk
BSG inspired
Looks fantastic
Poker chips instead of minis everywhere

soblue How will multiple "teams" work out with newbies
soblue Pick up and deliver not something I usually enjoy
soblue Length?

In Too Deep
DUE: Q4 2021
I think this game is the next arrival. It's also one of the most unique games I've ever seen. At least in theme. And the ideal of a hidden traitor game in which you can control who is the traitor. It's just a ton of neat ideas. I sure hope it pulls it off.

Very unique
Hidden traitor done different
Cyberpunk setting
Mechanics I love
Great price point

soblue A lot of great ideas mixed together don't always turn out well
soblue Seems like it needs way more story missions, like double

Hour of Need
DUE: Q4 2021
My last chance at a great dungeon crawler? The sadler bros say this is their best game, and I believe them. It's a far less fiddly, less bookkeeping than their other games. Card driven with tons of variety and replay value. And if it's well received, they plan to do more. My only downer is I don't care for their created universe. Happy to be wrong. But I wish this was Xmen. But more importantly, I just want it to be great. The pieces are certainly there for it to hit that lofty goal.

Best iteration of MDS system
Despite low funding, still a ton of content
Card driven with multiuse cards

soblue Not digging some of their heroes/villains
soblue Too punny
soblue Hopefully better balanced than past games

Formula'21GP
Race! Formula 90
DUE: Unknown
Yes, that is 2 games listed. For over 4 years Race! Formula 90 has been on this list. I got rid of my copy because it was suppose to hit ks that year. They had some terrible things happen. And it seems the rework has also taken them longer than expected. Supposedly it's hitting ks in november.

Enter a second, card driven heavy euro formula 1 game. Formula'21GP. I think it several ways it looks better than my beloved Race! But that's just in theory. Where Race! shines is it's so fast, something many racing games struggle with. You feel like you are zipping along the track. I worry with a more traditional tracks in 21gp (with positioning and such), it might be much slower. We'll see. Obviously I don't need two heavy euro f1 games. How will I chose? Well likely I'll back both and keep which ever one I find best.

Race! Formula 90
Original is the best racing game PERIOD
New rule changes are positive ones
New art and bigger boards
Hopefully improved player boards and ability iconography

soblue I hope it doesn't get too pricey
soblue Not sure I like how you can set up to pass late breaks
soblue Strategies/Skills were not exactly balanced before
soblue Stubborn to change drawing to end of your turn officially. Which shaves like 30 minutes off the play time or more. Guess that'll be a house rule I'm forced to keep

Formula'21GP
Gears and position on the track matter
More control of your speed than R90
Modern things like DRS
Better weather, tire wear, and yellow flag systems than R90

soblue Gear system core seems simple enough, but has fiddly additions
soblue Energy system is confusing and seems fiddly
soblue Bots will require more work compared to R90 wonderful system
soblue Price?

My Father's Work
DUE: Q2 2022
A game made for me. I love story stuff in games. I love worker placement. I've been wanting a great game with this theme since I've been in board gaming. I love spiral map systems. I love scenario non campaign games. Man this game has so much going for it. Hype meter got filled quick.

Theme
Story and scenarios
Changing worker placement map
Fantastic looking components
Not campaign

soblue Player boards trigger my OCD, and can never be fixed!

Batman: The Animated Series Adventures – Shadow of the Bat
DUE: Q4 2021
Supposedly this is finally shipping. I really liked TMNT, and this seems like an improvement on that. It's a crap ton of content. And now that IDW games is shutting down, a hell of a collector's item for a beloved show.

TMNT was really good
Gameplay improved over TMNT
Batman themed from one of the greatest cartoons
Kickstarter stuffed full of characters

soblue Will the quality in components be there?
soblue Some odd inclusions and exclusions
soblue Post release support?

Wonderland's War
DUE: Q4 2021
A company that have whiffed twice in a row for me now. But that hasn't derailed my hype for this game. Just because it's a mix of some of my favorite mechanics. I love the idea of taking quacks push your luck, and putting it into an area control game. Theme is awesome too.

Three of my favorite mechanics in 1 game
Alice in Wonderland
Beautiful and should be a great production

soblue Missed deadlines again
soblue Skybound for some reason likes inserts that are not tight in the box. Which I feel is pretty dumb. People travel with their games!

ISS Vanguard
DUE: Wave 1 Q3 2022
I hate they have gutted the ship part of the game. I was really looking forward to that. But despite that, it's still #2 on my list. The exploring planets and such Mass Effect style is like my favorite theme. I feel like it might be a long time before it gets here though.

My favorite theme
Probably a ton of gameplay
Book system could be amazing

soblue Dice system seems ok at best
soblue Awaken Realms have been struggling with rules for awhile
gulp Gutted ship phase

The Witcher: Old World
DUE: Q3 2022
For the first time ever, I think Runebound (a game that has been one of my favorites for a decade) has some real competition. I love so much of what they've done with this game. Witcher theme is cool, but that isn't what sold me. It was the deck building, adventure, and monster hunting. I went all in.

Witcher
No dice for combat (deck builder)
Race win condition
3 ways to play with expansions
Ton of content

soblue Runaway leader problem?
gulp Most I've ever spend on a game

FINAL THOUGHTS
Well there you have it. I'm guessing with the pandemic, some of these will see solo plays. Which oddly several support. I still think this is the best list of games I've done. So many I really think are top 25 worthy. My luck this year hasn't been great. I've played a lot of solid games, but not very many keepers.

The last few weeks has been a lesson about nostalgia glasses. Diablo 2 was one of my favorite games of all time 20 years ago. I was so hyped for the remaster. Crappy diablo severs aside, the game just isn't as good as I remember. There is so many bad dated problems. Honestly, WoW Burning Crusade held up a lot better. Something I never thought would be true.

TV wise I'm still slowly getting through Lost rewatch. After that will probably be That 70s Show with the new season coming. 70s show is absolutely one of my favorite shows of all time. It's been at least 5 years since I watched it. As far as new stuff, I'm still LOVING The Goldbergs. I got my brother watching it and he loves it too. Just takes me to a happier time. And it's always funny, and often very relatable.

So what did I miss? What are you all hyped for?
