Jeff (aka jridpath) and I had a wonderful time at BGG.con this year! Thanks to all staff, volunteers and sponsors for creating such an amazing event.

Great to catch up with old friends as well as make some new ones. This year, I purposely didn't schedule any games in advance, nor did I have a list of "new games I have to play at BGG." This left me more open to gaming and socializing opportunities that came up. I really enjoyed this, though it did mean I missed out on playing a lot of the hot new games.

I heard around 3000 gamers attended this year! The registration badge line was huge (see my pics) but was processed in about an hour, thanks to process tweaks and hard work by staff/volunteers.

As a fan of books for young people AND tabletop games, I can't help but think that a pairing would make a fine holiday gift. I've posted some pairing suggestions below (feel free to suggest more!):

LOCOMOTIVE by Brian Floca

"The Caldecott Medal Winner, Sibert Honor Book, and New York Times bestseller Locomotive is a rich and detailed sensory exploration of America’s early railroads, from the creator of the “stunning” (Booklist) Moonshot."

SECRETS books could be bought as a set or individually (doesn't what order you read these in)
For ages 12 and up
More about the series and authors

"In early June 1964, the Benevolent Home for Necessitous Girls burns to the ground, and its vulnerable residents are thrust out into the world. The orphans, who know no other home, find their lives changed in an instant. Arrangements are made for the youngest residents, but the seven oldest girls are sent on their way with little more than a clue or two to their heritage and the hope of learning about the families they have never known. On their own for the first time in their lives, they are about to experience the world in ways they never imagined…"

and because it's also about secrets and finding connections:

Codenames

ICE DOGS by Terry Lynn Johnson

HUGE thanks to all the staff/volunteers who plan and run the BoardGameGeek convention each year as well as the sponsors! Jeff and I had a wonderful time and are already counting down the days until next year's event.

I've finished uploading my BGG convention photos; see links below. I culled nearly 1600 photos down to 600. If you saw me taking a photo of you and it doesn't appear in the photosets below, it's probably because the photo didn't turn out for some reason (too blurry, unflattering for someone in the photo, repetitive of another photo, etc._).

To those who attended: feel free to scoop/repost any for personal use, to help promote the convention/designers/publishers, in blog posts etc. Please include photo credit whenever possible; on BGG, FB or Twitter, you can just tag me (on Twitter: @BGGgirl), or something like "Photo: Debbie Ridpath Ohi."

Unfortunately I lack the time to fulfill individual photo requests; feel free to scoop any from the links below; I've posted high res versions on Flickr. I'd upload all my photos to BGG if there was an easy way to upload all of them at once. :-)

(following is a copy of what I posted on my FB page, but am posting it here so I can refer newbie gamer friends who are curious about the game)

From gallery of Inkygirl

Last night I played Pandemic Legacy: Season 1 with Jeff and our friends Hrach (in the photo) and Vartan. I ***looooooooooooooved*** it. Most of my hardcore tabletop/board gaming friends will already know about this just-released game, but I wanted to give a non-spoiler overview for those who think board gaming is mainly Monopoly or Risk.

Thanks to Jeff for urging me to play this ("I think you're going to like it") because he was right -- it's totally up my alley. What I especially loved about this recent release from Z-Man Games:

- It's a co-op game, which means that all the players are working together, not against each other. In Pandemic Legacy, the world is on the brink of disaster and we work together to keep four deadly diseases at bay for a whole year. I've already played/enjoyed the original Pandemic game, but this new version has a Legacy deck which enhanced the game for me. Last night we "won" (kept the world safe) for the half of January. I enjoy winning in co-op games but even if we lose, at least you can commiserate with the others on your team.

- The choices we make in each game can have permanent repercussions in future games. Last night we played the first half of January, for example, and there were several instances in which our choices or cards we drew resulted in us permanently changing the game board or ripping up cards that will affect future game play. There are holes in the rules booklet that will be filled over time. The rules will change. Secret envelopes of instructions will be opened. In other words, you can only play through the whole Pandemic Legacy "season" once, but that season can consist of up to 20 games (I think it's 20, and that's if you lose every game. It's 12 games if you win every game).

- Love the storytelling element. At every step, I felt like we were part of an engaging story. I couldn't wait to find out what happened next! And since we've only just played one game of the "season" (that's the wording they use on the box), I know there's a lot more to come. I'm avoiding reading most reviews of the game to avoid spoilers, but I know that the rules of the actual can drastically change during gameplay because of the Legacy card deck. It certainly did during our game, which is why I'm not posting any close-ups of our game board in play.

PANDEMIC LEGACY was designed by Matt Leacock and Rob Daviau, with wonderful art by Chris Quilliams, published by Z-Man Games.

**** Note: this is not a family tabletop game like Monopoly where the rules can be learned in just a few minutes, so I don't recommend it for young children. Manufacturer suggested ages: 13 and up.

The Dice Tower has a great video review
