Seems everyone is doing a year in review of 2021. I don't think I've ever done one before but I am curious how many minis I painted last year so why not?

As for 2021, wow, even worse than 2020. And 2022 isn't looking any better.

At least I'll get some more minis painted from my huge pile. And whenever Brimstone Adventures starts shipping will pile on a few hundred more.

I was able to return to the office about 6 months ago. It's certainly weird to have this huge space that's mostly empty. But it's very quiet and lacks the distractions I had at home. They decided to bring back the mask mandate in December and apparently it goes on through at least February. Fortunately, I don't have to wear the damn thing in my office since it's just me. And lately I maybe see one or two people a day wandering about. It's safer than the grocery store. I'm trying not to get my hopes up but it would be wonderful for the world to return to some kind of normal in 2022.

I've compiled all the 2021 miniature painting images below-

Happy New Year!! Let's hope 2022 is better than 2021. I'll admit I'm a bit skeptical things will improve this year as we seem to be sliding back. But I suppose I should keep positive and hope for the best.

The Coffin Breakers were a surprise new release from Flying Frog Productions during their DiceFest online convention a few months ago. We've had a few types of undead before but this is the first time we got skeleton undead. They have an interesting twist with coffin shields that give them a huge defense. They may only have 2 hit points but you first have to land a hit!

This time around I painted two different minis. "The Devil of Black Rock" is a boss creature from Shadows of Brimstone: Challenge Pack #2 – Beast Unleashed. He's a heavily mutated variant of the Slashers from Shadows of Brimstone: Swamps of Death. The Flesh Mites are a separate expansion mostly used with the "Belly of the Beast" Other World from Forbidden Fortress. "Beast Unleashed" uses them, and they were on sale during Black Friday!

Back in 2014 Flying Frog Productions released the original Shadows of Brimstone core sets. This was the first time they attempted higher quality minis in hard plastic. They weren't great with shallow and mushy details. As they got more experience and better partners in China, the minis improved. In 2020 they decided to redo all the minis from the first core sets along with a revision of the rules and cards.

The Harbinger was the big boss from the Shadows of Brimstone: Swamps of Death. I painted the original sculpt a few years back. I was very unhappy with it as I didn't give it enough contrast or color. It was basically minor shades of Desert Yellow.

Original Sculpt with my paint job. Yes, very dull!!
Board Game: Shadows of Brimstone: Swamps of Death

With the updated sculpt from the revised edition I got a second chance to paint it. This time I not only wanted to improve the paintjob on a much better sculpted mini but add lighting for the first time. There are a few model building channels I follow on YouTube and was inspired by the lighting these guys add.

Flying Frog Productions released a new type of expansion at Gen Con & their website this year- Shadows of Brimstone: Challenge Pack #1 – Bound by Darkness
Board Game: Shadows of Brimstone: Challenge Pack #1 – Bound by Darkness

We got a ruleset, mission, & 30 cards along with the Heretic Preacher. He has a unique group of encounter cards and a set of Dark Sermon spells. It's a nice change of pace from the special terrain sets they've been releasing the past few years. I hope they do more of these.

The mini is resin so had the usual extra work on cleaning and gluing. Had trouble getting the arms to fit so had to trim to fit and use greenstuff to fill some gaps. Otherwise looks great with nice detail.

Board Game: Shadows of Brimstone: The Scafford Gang Deluxe Enemy Pack

The Scafford Gang is a famous mutant outlaw gang from Shadows of Brimstone. There's been various expansions including a new one (Shadows of Brimstone: Scafford Highwaymen Enemy Pack).

The original expansion included cards to encounter 5 different lieutenant mini-bosses. Originally you had to use a proxy to represent them but slowly we've gotten resin minis and Enemy Reference sheets.

Now, not only did we finally get the 5th one, but a new 6th one. Finished painting both. Not sure if there will be more after number 6, but the Hill brothers at Flying Frog seem to enjoy adding more content to this group so we might see more at some point.

I know, not that astounding, but hard to make it sound exciting.

Board Game: Shadows of Brimstone: Depth Track Accessory + Card Mini-Expansion

In the game, the depth track is used as a timer to keep the action focused on finishing the mission. As you descend into the dungeon, the evil is trying to get out. The game comes with cardboard tracks, but they recently released a plastic one that doesn't have the problem of a table bump messing up the tokens.

And another set of revised sculpt heroes from Shadows of Brimstone are done! This was the first Japan themed hero set before the Forbidden Fortress core set was released. Great name as they apparently wandered into the American old west!

Out of the 32 minis Flying Frog Productions has re-sculpted, I'm now down to 6. It's been about a year since I started them. Though I did several large scale minis for a break throughout the year. I plan to take another break before I finish off those last 6. Next up is the Shadows of Brimstone: Depth Track Accessory + Card Mini-Expansion which I'm prepping now. So watch for it in a future blog.

Finished another one of the revised sculpts from the expansion hero set- Shadows of Brimstone: Drifter Hero Pack.

This one was pretty mundane compared to the previous ones. I really enjoyed the Jargono Natives and especially happy how the male Prospector turned out. These two were mostly a lot of browns. Typical of old west heroes. Like most of the source illustrations, there was no indication of pants/boots colors, so did my own thing.

Board Game: Shadows of Brimstone: Drifter Hero Pack

The male figure is pretty close to the illustration. The right arm was a separate piece which didn't fit great against his body. I used a tiny bit of greenstuff at the shoulder connection as there was a gap. I did not attempt to duplicate the pattern in his poncho. With all the folds and weird angles I didn't know if it would look great. And if I made a mistake it would mean a repaint. So cut my losses.

The female figure had a significant difference between the illustration & mini. The female's jacket had a white blouse underneath. But in the mini, no blouse but large jacket lapels. So I split the difference and made the lapels white. The model's right arm was a separate piece which consisted of the arm, bit of shoulder, and half the back. There was a very obvious seam so had to use greenstuff to fix it. I think I got it blended in pretty well.

Next up is the Wandering Samurai. I'm about half way done with those two. Hope to finish them up this week. After that, not sure what I'll tackle next. I have 6 more heroes to paint but might take a break for something fun like some monsters or terrain piece. I'm getting burned out on the heroes. I've done almost 26 resculpts That's a lot of heroes!

If you saw my previous blog, I've been working on a group of 6 hero minis from the revised sculpts from Shadows of Brimstone.

I painted the original resin sculpts a few years ago. These new plastic sculpts are a huge improvement. See previous blog for images of the Jargono Native heroes.

Here's a few work-in-progress images of this group.
