Geekgold
The system for GeekGold should now be complete. Lots of fixes, and especially the user-to-user transfer system is now in place. Please test everything connected to GeekGold, that the functions are there and that they do what you expect, and that they are easy to use.

More help
The wide layout has worked well for most testers. That, Wiki, Profile, Image page, Video page, have all been worked on and need more testing. For example, test editing game descriptions and additional information (wiki system), check that everything you can do in the profile of yourself and others on the old site also can be done on the new, and test all customizable pages (not only the front page).

Some of the issues that were fixed during the last week. Please check, especially if you reported it.
Weblinks font much bigger than rest of page. Fixed.
Blog post overlaps banner. Fixed.
Some forums don't show up. Fixed, going directly to a forums now ignores your personal settings for what to filter out.
Major time lag when clicking "edit layout". Fixed.
Can't rename hot images bucket. Fixed this, plus videos and subdomain.
Missing button to go to the last page of a thread. Fixed.
Background blue on flag mouseovers is too dark to comfortably read. Fixed.
When changing the gallery of an image, the gallery does not change. Fixed, including some underlying issues. Very important report, thanks indigopotter!
Click "Edit Layout," the whole page goes gray. Fixed.
Game page gallery thumbnails only 3 wide when there's room for 6 across. Fixed.
Can't activate multiple columns on front page. Fixed.
The quickbar doesn't look right with the wide layout. Fixed.
'Mini' format for Version bucket on a game page shows lots of scroll bars. Fixed.
Recommend/flagging a thread doesn't always work. Fixed.
Rename forums on the front page to General Forums. Fixed.
Browse videos link from front page videos bucket broken. Fixed.
Delete image broken. Fixed.
Incorrect redirect on canceling edit of Item Description. Fixed.
Problems with pager jumping to a page. Fixed.
Small buckets with long header text obscures expand and gear links. Fixed.

Thanks for your help!

Changing Domains
If you want to change domains you click on the images on the footer of the page, the URL won’t change but until you do something to change again you should still be on the new domain.

New Global Forums
Although there are three “domains” to the geek, in the end it is only one big site, instead of a simple network of sites. In face of that there has been a change to the organization of the forums. The old GeekDo News got some new friends, and they are now visible on the Forum list under “Global Forums”. The new forums are:
- How to Geek;
- Geek Bugs;
- Geek Suggestions;
- Complaints Department;
- RSP;
- Spam;
- Testing;

When we launch (but not before as this change would affect the live site as well) threads that are now on the equivalent domain forums (for Geek Bugs it would BGG Bugs, RPGG Bugs, etc) will be moved to the Global Forum. Also, a new forum, again only on launch, will be added to each domain called “Domain Discussion”. This forum will be a catch-all type to encompass domain specific bugs, suggestions and how-tos. These will become rarer as time pass, so it should be easy to manage only one. The Off-Topic forums (Arcade, Chit Chat and Tavern) will be kept separated and will be moved from the Everything Else header to the DOMAIN Related header. We have not decided on the Creative Fodder yet.

Empty pages
Some pages, especially things that are sorted by Hot might appear empty the first time you check. If you recheck it after about 5 mins it should show correctly. This is because you might hit a cache that is not created yet. And after the first hit it is created.

Other known issues, new are underlined
If you experience strange layout issues, especially if you get them in one browser but not in another, clear the browser cache. This is especially common with Chrome, make sure you clear the caches properly in the settings, shift-reload does not work.

Green question mark images are placeholders.

Subscription to blog posts does not reset.

All customization settings will be reset when the site is released.

Geeklists are getting reworked. The functionality is there, it works, but it will be changed in layout.

The customization has changed completely. You can click on customization on the bottom of the navigation panel and change what block of information to show, and edit the details of each one.

Checking your geekmail or a subscription might not correctly mark it as read, so there might be a difference between the beta and the live site.

Image caches have not been regenerated. This means that for example the hotness images look very odd.

If you change the page or filter on the hotness and hit the back button it opens the hotness on the center bucket.

The “Next Unread Item” might hit an error page. That is because some of the subscription types have not been converted yet, so if you hit one of those it won’t work.

Most of your old quickbar links should be converted, although there is a bug where the pages are shifted 1 to the right (so your first page is now page 2). They are not synced with the live site and will be converted again before release.

The site loads slow from time to time.

Wide layout
Sorry for the delay with this update, we really wanted to get the new wide layout into a testable stage as quickly as possible! See this separate post with instructions and more examples.

Example of Customized RPGGeek Front page

Profile
The writings section of the user profile page has been overhauled. All links in "writings" should now work, as should everything grouped under writings. Geekquestions have been temporarily removed from writings, until the feature is done. Many other bugs on Profile have been fixed, with the exception of user-to-user geekgold transfers.

Recent activity now works.

Image page and Video page
The layout of these have been changed, and some of the functionality too. There is a new gear icon that holds a menu for things that can be done.

Wiki
The Wiki should now work.

Edit uploaded screenshots with BugDigger
It is now possible to edit the automatically captured screenshots. This was made possible by an update from the BugDigger developers, thanks! Click the image to edit, add arrows, text and field marks, click save, and you will see a new additional screenshot attached. You can deselect the original screenshot to not upload that one.

Note the new, underlined, additional notes at the bottom of this post.

Thanks for your help!

Greetings everyone,

On today's release we are glad to announce the new wide layout! The configuration options have also been reworked and improved for those of you that want all your data displayed on a single screen. We have also greatly improved the customization system to make it faster and easier to use.

Layout Configuration

If you have a wide or big screen you might want to activate the wide layout. This will make the customizable pages fill up your screen with the maximum amount of information. On other pages like threads the page will expand to fit your screen. You reach it by going to "My Geek"->"Account" in the top menu, then "Layout Settings" in the left menu, and activating "Use a wide layout on the site". If you do that then many pages will expand to fill the whole width. This is most useful on the customizable pages. Please clear the cache completely if you use Chrome, otherwise the changes will make the site very strange. There are additional changes planned to make this unnecessary, but they are not done yet.

Customize Layout Block

The pages that can be configured are Front page, Profile, GeekItem, Forum and Subscription (remember that subscriptions are not working correctly right now). Each of them is completely independent from the others. The customization link is found in the bottom of the left menu, and shown whenever you can customize a page.

The default for logged in users (if the wide option is not enabled) as well as for users that have not logged in is to use the fixed layout. Another very useful setting if you want to show as much information as possible is to also select "Add new pages to current view". This will make some links you click open up in the current window, where the information will make room for itself. Test it, see if you like it!

A wide layout will take most of your available space except for space reserved for ads. There are two types of ads that might affect it. The skyscraper and a new one called skins that we are adding after this is released live. If you have adblock enabled, and block both, the layout will leave a 20px margin on each side, otherwise it will be more. This will be the behaviour anywhere that you can't customize the view, for example threads, GeekMail, GeekLists, etc.

Revamped Edit layout screen with a couple of options displayed

Customizing the Front Page

The Front Page is one of the pages that can be customized, the same principles apply to other customizable pages. Go to front page, click "Customize Layout" and then "Edit Layout" in the left menu. You will now see the revamped Edit Layout screen, which you can see on the right. If you saw the previous post about the customization, the basic functionality hasn't changed. If you mouseover on the menu on the left, you will see the modules you can add to your page. Click on anything that you want to add to your layout on the right. You can click the same thing several times, and then configure the copies in different ways to show for example both Recent and Hot at the same time, or several different, specific, blogs.

Each item on the right had can be expanded individually (click the double arrow that appears when you mouseover it), removed (click the X) or reordered by dragging and dropping. The double arrow in the top right corner can be clicked to expand the options for all the modules.

Bulk change feedback

The bulk change menu allows you to do changes to all of your current modules. The changes occur only on those modules where that option is available to change. Make a change and then click apply for that change. You can see from the feedback, and from the changes to the configurations, that the change was performed. The Bulk Change menu will always look the same, it will not reflect the current settings in any way. After you have done all the changes you want, click "Save and Close". The screen will wait for up to a minute while your new layout is saved and the page refreshed.

The columns
One of the new options you can set for a module is the number of columns it takes. A column is roughly 200px wide, and you can set up how many columns each module will take on the layout. For example, on the screen below, Trades and Files both use 2 columns, Geeklists and Blogs 4, Board Games by rank and Wargame Forums 3, etc. The system will try to fit as many columns as possible on your screen, dependent only on any ad space, and your resolution. As you can see, on my case with a 1920 wide monitor it fit 8 columns. If you shrink the screen, for example, by resizing the browser window, the modules are rearranged for the new width, to a minimum of 1000 pixels.

Customized BGG Front Page on a 1920 x 1080 monitor

Module Styles
We have changed the styles for the modules. There are now three possible values:
Full: Which is the default version. Below you can see it on Trades and Hot Wargames Videos.
Compact: Which is smaller version without the text snippet and closer to the current live site. Thematic Games Files and Wargames Forums.
Mini: The smallest one. It normally is just the title of the object with a mouseover effect. Like the default front page.

You can set the default style you want to use in the layout settings of your account. If a module does not have the style you want (for example, there is no 'Mini' hotness right now), the default "Full" layout will be used. The old clean styles option is gone.

Other important information
There are a couple of other important things to know about the system. It is quite smart and tries to fix your modules neatly, but it tries to do that primarily based on the order you have created. From time to time, you might find some white spaces in between your modules. This is a known limitation and not something we can change.

By default, if you click on any link on the left menu to open a new module, it replaces everything on your page and just add this new one (using the default style set on your layout, and with the rest of the default settings for it). To change that behavior, you need to enable the Add new pages to current view option on your layout. This will make new modules be added to the top of your page, and also rearrange everything to fit.

The filters for each module are now hidden by default, and you can display them by clicking on the double arrow to open. If you want all shown by default, select "Show filters when available by default" on your layout settings.

There is currently a bug regarding the customization and your browser history. It is triggered if you page or change a filter for a module on your front page and try to go back by hitting backspace. Instead of what is expected (to keep everything displayed and undo the paging\filter) the whole page is replaced by that one module alone. We are working on a fix for it.

When you load a new module it might be empty, just like before. This is due to caching issues. Wait a short while, then reload, and the contents should be displayed.

All in all, please use the BugDigger system to report any other bugs with the system and use this blog post to discuss.

GeekMod again
There were quite many problems with GeekMod. It has been overhauled, please test everything in GeekMod again.

GeekItem Admin Queue and GeekItem Admin Tools
Admins, please test this. Non-admins, nothing you need to test

Layout changes
There are several pages that are customizable: Frontpage, Profile, GeekItem, Forum and Subscription. We are working on making this customization more flexible, so that you can control the width of each added block (called buckets in the system) and so that the width of the page adapts to the width of the screen. This is not ready yet though, it needs some work. The parts that we needed to fix interact with the current systems, so parts of the changes had to be let through to the beta to reduce the amount of work. This means some things on beta are currently broken, so please do not report anything regarding hotness or customization this week. We hope to release this system next week.

Thanks for your help!

Some of the issues that were fixed during the last week. Please check, especially if you reported it.
Many GeekMod problems fixed and improved.
Text glitch in menus when viewing subscriptions. Fixed.
When rating games there is no help. Added
"Search for Version Publisher" when adding version is broken. Fixed.
Can't set licence credits for image upload. Fixed.
Image upload caption text flows outside box. Fixed.
External link formatting errors. Fixed.
Front page forum view doesn't keep "compact mode" when changing pages. Fixed.

- How to Geek;
- Geek Bugs;
- Geek Suggestions;
- Complaints Department;
- RSP;
- Spam;
- Testing;

Other known issues

Delay and design
Sorry for the delay in getting this update out, we are trying to keep a regular schedule. We are however still not fully up to speed with getting any of the released systems completely fixed and in a state for another round of tests as there is more to handle in total than anticipated. We have also reprioritized and are changing some design things, the first round of changes just went live on the beta. Please select "Focus: Design changes" when reporting on this.

Focus: Gone Cardboard
The new system to test this week is Gone Cardboard, everything about how it works and how it can be accessed.

Focus: Design changes
The design changes is not a new system, but please test and comment on the changes done now during this week. There will be further design changes.

This week we did a lot of tweaks on the overall design of the site. You will see that the pager is now less round, and more spaced. Gradients have been removed in some places, more specifically the front page, forums, avatars and any header. White space has been reduced in many places. The gray background is gone leaving a full white, this is in preparation of further design changes. Borders have been made lighter in most places, and the geekmail look has been upgraded.

Plays
Remember: Plays system is not implemented yet.

Thanks for your help!

Some of the issues that were fixed during the last week. Please check, especially if you reported it.

Extra special thanks to Nathan!

The reports are generally about a real issue that needs to be fixed, informative and helpful. A majority of the reports are unique. The most duplicates so far were about 8 for a single issue, obviously something we needed to fix fast. Both unique and duplicates help us, another example of where duplicates help is to give us more data to work with for fixing an issue.

The most useful reports are the ones for the current weekly focus (right now creating items). That is what is most complete and where testing is most effective. But reports on other things have made development faster in those areas too, as for some systems that were partly implemented we have been able to use the reports to add missing functionality in efficient ways.

Thanks! Please continue, with your help we will be able to release the redesign sooner, and make it much better.

All testers now have access
All who have applied for being beta testers now have access, over 1000 helpful! A big thank you to everyone! If you have filled in the application form but have not received the invite, please contact me.

Additional attachments now work
The BugDigger developers have been very helpful and added a workaround to limitations in JIRA. It is now possible to upload additional files with a report.

Reporting without BugDigger
Thanks to the workaround (it is on the server side), it is also possible to create reports and upload files without using the BugDigger plugin. It takes more time, gives us less information, but if you cannot install the plugin for some reason (using another browser, having a restricted computer) you can still create reports. How to do this is now added to the Instructions, see the end of that post.

Changes to Search
We have done changes to search, and working on more changes. We hope to release both Search and Advanced Search next week, so please wait with reports on Search until that time.

Search
The main Search bar now shows the current type you are searching for instead of the generic "search the geek" phrase.

Advanced Search
If you do a search on a type on the advanced page, and click on the tab to change to another type, the search will be repeated (sans options, only the search query) on the new type. Example: if you are searching on RPG Items for "test" and click on the RPG settings tab, it will reload the page searching for "test" on RPG Settings.

If you do not have the ajax search enabled (you can change it on My Geek > Account > Layout Settings), typing a string and then clicking on any type inside options, will take you to that advanced search page, and automatically perform the search.

If you DO have the ajax search:
- If you lose focus of the search, the term and results will simply be hidden, instead of destroyed. Clicking on the bar will show them again.
- If you perform a search and afterwards change the search type, it will now redo the search with the same term, for the new type.

Weekly focus
This week (from today until next Thursday, that is) we focus on testing GeekItem Creation. The update email accidentally listed Profile, Search and Advanced Search too, but please wait with reporting on those systems. Remember that what you do on the beta site is done also to the live site. If you create any new items this week, please create them on the beta site and verify that everything works.

GeekItem is the system that includes games, companies, people (such as designers and artists), weblinks, versions, Properties, Families, categories, podcasts, periodicals, honors (awards like SdJ), video game characters, walkthroughs and more.

In the menu, under Misc/Create, everything there are GeekItems that want to be created

Thanks for your help!

We have changed the release schedule to be every Thursday instead of every Friday.

This week (from today until next Thursday, that is) we focus on testing Frontpage, account, geekmod, image upload, editor. Remember that what you do on the beta site is done also to the live site, so upload images, change your account etc. like you would on the normal site. If you want to test anything without using your own account, use the test account (information was in your invitation email).

An issue that was noted as known in the previous updates but many have reported on is that hotness images are not correctly scaled. Rescaling for the new image formats is not activated yet.

We have a new post editor! It is a popup window that can be minimized and then brought up again, you can scroll the page, quote multiple posts etc. Please test! Is the way it works intuitive? Is it easy to understand what forces it to disappear? Are the confirmation messages appearing for the right reasons?

The parts we focus on for the week are working, there are no major changes planned to them, and we ask for your help in checking that they work as they should. If you find errors or improvements that could be made, please report them so we can make the site better. Major reworking and new features must however wait until after the new UI is released. Reports on other things than the focus area are great too, but there might be work done on them already that is not in the release of the beta that you are testing.

Thanks for your help!

Changing Domains
If you want to change domains just click on the images on the footer of the page, the URL won’t change but until you do something to change again you should still be on the new domain.

GeekLists
Geeklists are getting reworked. The functionality is there, it works, but it will be changed in layout. Separating comments better from the items, and redo the way the comments are displayed. So although you can use it as you want, the layout will be changed.

- How to Geek;
- Geek Bugs;
- Geek Suggestions;
- Complaints Department;
- RSP;
- Spam;
- Testing;

These will became rarer as time pass, so it should be easy to manage only one. The Off-Topic forums (Arcade, Chit Chat and Tavern) will be kept separated and will be moved from the Everything Else header to the DOMAIN Related header. We have not decided on the Creative Fodder yet.

Customization and settings
The overall customization was changed completely. Most of the areas are on what we call the Bucket System. It is similar to the old front page modules, but appears in a lot more places. You can click on customization on the bottom of the navigation page and change which ones show.

Cache Known Issues
The first thing you might notice is a difference on things like the number of subscriptions shown or the number of unread GeekMail. That is because we have completely separated the caches from the beta site and the live site. That causes a few things:

1. Checking your geekmail or a subscription on one of the sites won’t update the counter and vice-versa. It works, but the count is not updated. If you do anything on the other site it will update automatically.

2. Some pages, especially things that are sorted by Hot might appear empty the first time you check. If you recheck it after about 5 mins it should show correctly. This is because you might hit a cache that is not created yet. And after the first hit it is created.

Other Known Issues
The laurel image on the ranks is a placeholder;
The “Next Unread Item” might hit an error page. That is because some of the subscription types have not been converted yet, so if you hit one of those it won’t work;
The social web bucket is not there, and the recent activity is not styled yet;
Most of your old quickbar links should be converted, although there is a bug where the pages are shifted 1 to the right (so your first page is now page 2);
The site loads slow from time to time - We are using a new system to create the CSS files to be easier for us to code and do some changes. That means that it gets recreated everytime we push a new CSS version. This won’t happen like this as we put the system live, but since we are doing lots of changes now, it will be noticeable.
