For some reason, I've always had a good deal of reluctance about anything physical. I was mostly living in my head, so to speak, even in early childhood, and that pattern never changed. To me, it seems the material world makes a lot of demands and imposes a lot of challenges, and I'd almost always prefer to bow out and retreat into the more comfortable worldview I imagine--the world of my thoughts and dreams.

Throughout the history of video games, multiple lives have been a thing. It's not so clear in the real world, where some 51 percent of people worldwide (and about 38 percent in the US) believe in reincarnation. But in games, apparently the word "death" isn't enough to mean "game over"; for that they've come up with "permadeath."

Often I don't get enough sleep. And I guess I'm getting older every day too. So in the evening, when day is nearly done and I have a bit of time to just relax and play a game, chances are I'll feel a little reluctant about it.

The gaming I did this past weekend confirmed a change in my taste--or maybe just a phase I'm going through. Lately I'm impatient with highly complex games and much happier with simple ones.

Years ago, when I was mainly into board wargaming, I decided I didn't like what I called "split-dimensional" games. Or "split-focus games," which was another classification I created.

By now, VGGeeks who recognize my name or avatar probably associate me with Master of Orion. I've been playing and writing about that game for years. Now I've rediscovered another old favorite, Warlords II Deluxe.

As I'm reevaluating my collection, one kind of game I'm wondering about and may experiment more with is the builder (sometimes called city builder). I think it started with SimCity way back when.

This weekend has been a turning point for me in the area of video gaming. I've been putting some thought into what to line up for the 2022 Videogame Challenge (an annual VGG event I'm new to), and it has prompted me to look at my games in a new way. I never plan ahead, and now I'm doing that--considering which games I'd choose to fill the year up with.
