Unwatched Movie Marathon

I've been very fortunate that I still have a job. I work the night shift at a hotel in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. The hotel has closed but for now I'm still working as night security. With no one here I brought in my portable DVD player and I've decided now is a good time to watch all the movies I've collected over the years that I haven't watched. There are quite a few of them, and most are gonna be pretty bad. Just thought it might be fun to talk about them. Cheers!

33 - Pride of the Yankees (June 30)

Before Watching:

I don't know much about this one. I know it's a classic sports movie about Lou Gehrig. I didn't realize it was released in 1942, making it one of the oldest movies I own. It should be interesting to see if I can spot inspirations of more modern sports movies I like, such as Bull Durham, Tin Cup and Field of Dreams. It will also be interesting to find out if I like it more or less than other older movies I've enjoyed, such as Casablanca, 12 Angry Men, and The Lady Vanishes.

After Watching:

What a wonderful film. The two leads, Gary Cooper and Teresa Wright, were amazing. I'm not sure how accurate it was, but the Gehrigs seemed to have a wonderful life. I loved the scene near the end when Eleanor is driving to confront Lou after he was late and had not called home for the fourth time. Hysterical. The speech at the end, which I knew was coming, still brought a tear to my eye. No joke.

It's difficult to compare with modern films, but I'd consider this the best movie I've seen from before 1970 with the exception of 12 Angry Men.

My Rating:

32 - Pirates of the Caribbean - At World's End (June 29)

Before Watching:

Looking forward to the third movie of the series. All three of these movies are very long, so I wasn't able to watch it until a longer block of time was available. I doubt it will be as good as the original, but I hope it's as good as the last one.

After Watching:

That was pretty good. Still not as good as the first one, but it's really hard to recapture the charm and wit and just the plain "newness" of a great movie with respect to its sequels. I may seek out the other sequels down the road, but for now I appreciate that most of the loose ends of the plot have been tied off.

My Rating:

Next Up: Pride of the Yankees. I do like a good sports movie every now and then

31 - Pirates of the Caribbean - Dead Man's Chest

Before Watching:

I rewatched the first film because it had been a long time since I'd seen it. I'd forgotten how much I loved the movie. All the actors were excellent, with such great visuals and story. I can only hope the sequels are even close to as good.

After Watching:

A classic case of sequelitis. Dead Man's Chest is okay, but it doesn't have the charm and wit of the original. It also runs way too long. Looking forward to the next one though. Hopefully that one won't end in another cliffhanger cause I don't own the last two films.

30 - Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome

Before Watching:

After the last Mad Max movie, I'm looking forward to hopefully more character development. Also Tina Turner. She can really sing, but can she act?

After Watching:

Yes, Tina Turner can act. Beyond Thunderdome was pretty good, but I liked The Road Warrior a little better. Two men enter, one man leaves.

29 - Mission Impossible III (June 8)

Before Watching:

I've seen the first MI movie, and I think I've seen the second, but I'm not sure. Hopefully this one doesn't require deep knowledge of the previous movies. I'm looking forward to a popcorn action movie with lots of stunts and fight scenes.

After Watching:

MI:III was pretty much exactly what I expected. The villain was scary, the stunts were fantastic, the fight scenes were good. Good mindless fun.

28 - Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (June 5)

Before Watching:

Since I don't own it I can't include the original Mad Max to this blog, but I hadn't seen it, so my buddy who is a big fan of the series watched it with me. He happened to have a copy. The original movie was interesting, but pretty much a 'B' movie. I liked it, especially the main character, but the ending was pretty brutal.

Going into The Road Warrior I'm expecting some kind of cross between the original Mad Max and Fury Road (which I have seen). Hopefully the story will show how Max's tragedies from the first film have affected him.

After Watching:

That was a really good movie. Liked it better than the original. Since the death of his family Max has become a shell of a man, only interested in survival in a brutal, lawless world. He meets a society of idealists, sort of what he used to be like. He tries very hard to not get caught up in their cause, but eventually is forced to help them. The ending is much brighter than the first film, and while I don't think Max has been healed, I think he's taken his first stops on that journey. Hopefully his character changes some more in the next film.

One of my favourite things about The Road Warrior is how it subverted my expectations. The people Max meets are moral, but not completely naive. I expected Max to bond with the feral child character a little more, kind of like Ripley and Newt from Aliens, but I don't think Max was ready for that kind of relationship yet.

There was also a scene that reminded me a lot of Star Wars, but it turned out differently. Max makes a deal with the community to get them a truck they need in exchange for his car, his freedom and all the gas he can carry. When he makes good on his end and drives away, I was totally expecting a scene a la Han Solo leaving with his reward and showing up to save the day. Instead Max gets attacked by the villain's henchman and left for dead. He's saved and brought back to the society and finally agrees to help them escape. The final twist of the ending was also well done.

My rating:

Next up: I'm taking a little detour from post-apocalyptic Australia into Mission Impossible III. Beyond Thunderdome will follow soon.

27 - Lethal Weapon 4 (May 26)

Before Watching:

I think I may have seen this before or possibly some scenes from it. It should be interesting to see how this franchise ends.

After Watching:

Well that was a great series. I'm kind of shocked that I enjoyed all 4 movies quite a lot. There's a formula, but it's a good one. By the forth movie you know how it's going to go, but it's easy to love these characters. To keep things fresh they introduce a new character in every movie. This time it's Chris Rock playing Murtagh's future son-in-law. One of the things they do right is to keep the old character's coming back, like Joe Pesci and Rene Russo's characters. It gives the series a great sense of continuity and a rich and detailed world.

Another thing this movie does right is the main villain. Jet Li is awesome as the quiet, menacing and very scary villain. I was impressed with his acting skills in the scenes when he's interacting with his relatives. The climax is the best in the series for me, and caps off things in style. I highly recommend the Lethal Weapon series to anyone who likes action movies with a dash of comedy.

26 - Lethal Weapon 3 (May 21)

Before Watching:

I took a break to play some solo board games for a while. Back to the Lethal Weapon series. Hopefully with more interesting female supporting characters.

After Watching:

Great movie. Rene Russo was fantastic as the ass-kicking cop from internal affairs. She made a great foil for Riggs. Joe Pesci was still funny. Plot was a little forgettable, but I can definitely see myself wanting to watch this again in a few years.

Very good sequel to the first movie, but has one of the worst cases of "Women in Refrigerators" that I've ever seen.

24 - Lethal Weapon (May 7)

Before Watching:

This was a late 80s classic action series. Everyone saw it back in the day, except me apparently. Many years later I saw the entire 4 movie series collection on sale and picked it up, thinking I'd finally get to find out what all the hype was about. Well here we go with the first one.

After Watching:

I can see why this is considered a classic. Great action film from beginning to end. Loved the character development of the two leads, and the pacing was extremely fast, but not so fast as to make the plot non-sensical. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series.
