Miniature Games Construction Yard

In this blog I'll talk about various miniature games. Custom miniatures and minor conversions are my favorite pastime. I'll cover scenery making and painting too. The WIP you'll see here is all about Necromunda, Epic 40,000, Warhammer Fantasy 5th Edition, Warmaster and Warhammer 40K 3rd Edition.

For too long have I ignored the calling of Wyrdstone. Because we're all grounded here in Belgium because of the Covid outbreak, it's time to again plan travelling to Mordheim: City of the Damned!

My bits box has plenty of loose miniatures to form warbands. Skaven will be the first. After all, Mordheim is swarming with these vermin.

The Henchmen:

From gallery of tocoking
4 Verminkin with spears and shields.

These rats are minor conversions from GW's Plague Rats sprue.

From gallery of tocoking
5 Verminkin with swords and shields.

The oldest plastic GW miniatures. True vintage OldHammer stuff!

The Heroes:

From gallery of tocoking
2 Black Skaven with swords and bucklers.

I had a set of Warhammer: The Island of Blood Skaven Clanrats dormant in a dark corner of the bits box. These two guys with hoods are just perfect as dark silent assassins...

From gallery of tocoking
1 Assassin Adept with halberd and shield.

With a minor conversion to give him a halberd this rat is ready to lead the pack. He looks viscious and mean. He's the ideal backstabbing leader of this vile Skaven warband.

I intend to do a speed painting job on these with black, brown and red. That method worked fine on my Goliath gang for Necromunda. (See earlier blogposts...)

A whole brigade of Bretonnian cavalry has been waiting in my closet for the infantry to arrive. And finally they're here. Two regiments of Men-at-arms from a Fireforge Games KickStarter.

From gallery of toco

I removed a coupled of milimeters from the resin guy's legs in order to make his the same height as the other mini's. It's sad these guys are 35mm and not the Warhammer FB heroic scale 28mm... But they look good and remind me of the Advanced Heroquest Henchmen. But, again, they are much larger than those vintage dudes...

From gallery of toco

The standard bearer holds a banner from Games-Workshop. He also received a headswap from the GW Men-at-arms (or Archers) sprue.
The MDF base comes from eBay. Suits my needs perfectly. For my Warmaster 28mm conversion I need regiment ranks of 4 wide, 3 deep. (More about that in previous blog posts.)
To reach 24 infantry spots I only had to use 1 filler. Some barrels fulfilled this purpose perfectly.

PS: Fireforge's Folk Rabble set is terrible. I had great difficulty fitting the arms and weapons. They are not the same modelling quality as the henchmen from above.

See my version from 2014 below. Seems like GW really liked my conversion and created a Retail version of it.

(Jus' kidding...)

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow ...

Time to continue my work on the Kislev army. Thanks to Fireforge Games and the very recent El Kraken Released KickStarter campaign I now have sufficient miniatures to close the ranks.

From gallery of toco

The plastic Mongol Horde combined with official GW Kislevites and metal Kraken miniatures provides me four infantry regiments. (Yes, I admit, I did use pine trees as regiment fillers.) I would advise you to have a look at the Kraken miniatures yourself. They are great quality sculpts.

From gallery of toco

Basing metal cavalry miniatures on monster bases was often difficult because of the small hooves of horses that generated only a very small surface to attach glue. By bending the slot around, I now dicovered a solid way to glue the horses to larger bases. The miniature is now very stable.

From gallery of toco

(More work in progress, not seen in the pictures: 3 plastic horse archer regiments and 3 metal winged lancer regiments.)

This miniature was originally not intented to join my GI Joe Necromunda gang. It's one of my Warhammer 40K Catachan Spec Ops team members.

However, the resemblance is striking. Orange beard, white shirt.

Maybe he would be even more recognizable as the Joe Outback if I slapped a brown backpack on his back...

One of THE biggest reasons I visit board- and wargame conventions like CRISIS in Antwerp (Belgium) is second-hand shops. Private sellers trying to ditch their excess miniatures from their collections.

From gallery of tocoking

Look what I found! Second, third and fourth edition Blood Bowl (Second Edition) (star)players. "Boomer Eziasson", "Grim Ironjaw", "Bilerot Vomitflesh", "Wormhowl Grayscar" and many others. Yes, even a Chaos Dwarf. and now the best part: 2,- Euro each cool

From gallery of tocoking

And for those of us with sufficient age to have seen these blisters in the (FLG)Shops when they were new releases: vintage Necromunda goodies! With fair prices.

Snake-Eyes' pupil Kamakura, another Arashikage ninja for my GI Joe Necromunda Gang.

I tried to get the tone of his blue balaclava right, because that's what differentiates him and makes him recognizable.

Painting his hair was easy. White basecoat. Chestnut inkwash (GW).

The metal miniature is from i-Kore, from their discontinued game Void.

Dial-tone, one of my favorite Joe's when I was a kid. Dunno why exactly. I can only remember my little sister breaking off the microphone from his backpack. I was really upset. Oow, the worries of a kid...

From gallery of tocoking

The green tint really matches his toy counterpart. Wait… this 28mm miniature is a toy too actually…
Ssst... keep that a secret... it's not a toy, it's an important part of a simulation tabletop game!

From gallery of tocoking

I wanted his backpack and gun in a grey tone because the toy had grey accessoires too. Worked out just fine me-thinks.
