Miniature Games Construction Yard

In this blog I'll talk about various miniature games. Custom miniatures and minor conversions are my favorite pastime. I'll cover scenery making and painting too. The WIP you'll see here is all about Necromunda, Epic 40,000, Warhammer Fantasy 5th Edition, Warmaster and Warhammer 40K 3rd Edition.

These green guys were on their way to eBay. The spare miniatures (with 1 replacement) have no real use for me, because I already have an Orc team.

From gallery of tocoking

But while I was gathering this gang of Orcs, my hobby-gen was flaring and I had the urge to start assembling them myself. And filling in gaps of the team with further replacements.
So, I went throught my Warhammer 40,000 bitsbox and found me three extra Orks. Ideal to pose as Black Orc Blockers.

Now I have one thrower, 4 blitzers (2nd edition), 6 line-orcs and 3 blockers. My love for glueing and cutting plastic satisfied

What follows is the Warmaster battle report I promised in blogposts 85045 and 85043.

Orc general Gutrok and his warband is marauding the outskirts of the Empire for quite some months. Many villages have been plundered, but no great cities have suffered any assaults yet. That's why the Empire troops are ignoring warboss Gutrok and his greenskins for the moment.
The greenskins warband however is approaching a High Elf outpost. And the elves have prepared to stop Gutrok's menacing force.

1000 Points of Warmaster 28mm units on each side, the Orcs are taking the first turn.

The game went off with a slow start. The Orc General was unable to get his main retinue moving, where fortunatelly his Goblin Hero managed to gain terrain on the left flank. The Wolf Rider made good pace and the Orc Shaman flew his Wyvern over the nearby farmhouse to oversee the action.

The High Elves initiated a counter-move to bock the progress of the green horde as soon as possible. The Gryphon-mounted General planned to rip those annoying Goblin foottroops to pieces with the help of the stout Silver Helms (which, in my army, are plain bone-white-helms). On the High Elves' left flank the fast cavalery started a flanking manoeuvre with the intent to run over the stagnant Orc units.

The Orc Shaman did not sit idle and watch. He noticed those pesky pointy-eared archers creeping closer and closer. Time for some great Orc Waaagh magic! -*!STOMP!*- The foot of Gork himself crushed some poor Elves deep into the soil. Leaving behind a small puddle as deadly reminder to the Orc's presence.

Enraged of the loss of his loyal archers, the High Elf General orders his Gryphon to render the Goblins to shreds.

From gallery of toco

My love of using vintage cardboard templates encouraged me to unleach another magic spell from the fingertips of my High Elf Wizard. Alas, no luck in doing any considerable damage... Those Wolfriders are nimble and fast, avoiding the magic power.

To cut a long story short, later in the game the Orcs and accompanying Giant managed to get into close combat range. But the persistant defence of the Elves kept them at bay and scattered the green horde... Gutrok will have to gather him a new warband to ravage the Empire.

While you're all waiting for my battle report about Orcs versus High Elves, I present you a report that I have written some time ago.

Ahsoka Tano and Kanan Jarrus...

...versus Darth Vader!

From gallery of tocoking

Scenario: The Fulcrum Rendez-vous

The rebels must handover an important data disk to Ahsoka Tano. Unfortunatelly, Darth Vader is aware of this transfer and has set up an intercept mission under orders of Moff Tarkin.

Kanan Jarrus starts to the left of the map and Ahsoka's squad (see army lists below) starts at the right. The mission is a succes for the rebel player(s) when the data disk token reaches Ahsoka. The dark side wins if Ahsoka is killed or the data disk is intercepted.

Because I am a backer of the KickStarter "Forgotten World Fantasy Figures" by Fireforge Games, I am expecting a complete army of men-at-arms, peasants and mounted squires.

That's why I am doing a re-inventory of my first Bretonnian army.

From gallery of tocoking

It seems this army is complete. So I am scavenging eBay for some new vassals of the realm. Extra Knights will be required, as is a general. For the general I will probably just take one of the two Pegassus Knights I already own. No need for a Hippogriph.

I had these metal pre-slotta Amazons for quite some time. Collected them one by one. Still not enough for a full regiment. But when I use them as fillers in a Skink regiment, they're ready to fight!

One of them had her wrist broken off. Second row, second mini. Very fine arms made it impossible to glue. Even when using superglue. But greenstuff is AMAZING! I created a bracelet and the arm/wrist is now super strong. I succesfully recycled a vintage expensive miniature. (I'll try to edit and add a detail picture later.)

This Saurus oldblood is a leftover from the Carnodon box. You can find many conversions on Google. This is the start of mine. I really discovered the usefulness of green stuff.

From gallery of tocoking

I was in need of another Saurus hero to lead my Warmaster 28mm army. So I did a kitbash to mix 'n match various plastic parts into one fine mounted champion.

From gallery of tocoking

I'll divide the army in two sub-armies. One green, one blue.

Epic Inventory Backlash

After collecting various 6mm Epic 40K miniatures for some years it's time for a descent inventory.

It took me one long evening to unpack many boxes and ziplock bags. I even discovered some unopened blisters bought years ago. The desk was covered in Imperial troops: Adeptus Mechanicus, Imperial Guard and Titan Legions.

SAaaWEEaaT!

Imperial Armour

The image above shows a portion of the Imperial Armour. In the background are miniatures from MechWarrior that I can use as Leviathans etc...
My plan was to create themed detachments while still aiming for a rounded amount of points. Designing (3rd edition) detachements like this allows me to select miniatures pretty fast when playing another battle.

From gallery of tocoking
Knights and Imperial Guard

When I discovered that there were a lot of Knights and Robots in my collection, I decided to start me an Adeptus Mechanicus army, based on the army list that appeared in Firepower Magazine. I ended up with around 1600 points AM and an uncountable amount of points for the IG.
cool

And after all this detachment-building, writing drafts, calculating totals in Excel and putting parts of armies on every empty spot in my room that I could find... I GOT FED UP. Seriously. I had enough. Pleasure overload. Inventory blues.
So I repacked everything and started planning to paint an overseeable amount of miniatures. A smaller amount. ONE detachment of Tau. It's better to focus on one small portion of a collection than to unpack it all. Because I'm fighting against a problem that many other players face: UNPAINTED miniatures.

There should be a microbadge for this: "Owner of Too Many Unpainted Miniatures".
