In this blog I'll talk about various miniature games. Custom miniatures and minor conversions are my favorite pastime. I'll cover scenery making and painting too. The WIP you'll see here is all about Necromunda, Epic 40,000, Warhammer Fantasy 5th Edition, Warmaster and Warhammer 40K 3rd Edition.

Space Hulk - the Wolfpack's Return to Kalidus

Objective: Intel Gathering - Find the computer terminal (top left in picture) and retrieve the location of the Space Wolves' Battle Standard and the location of the control room of the planetary defense systems.



For this game I used my Space Hulk (third edition) board, tokens and game rules. The mission comes from an old White Dwarf magazine, designed for SH 1st Edition.



I really wanted to use my nearly finished metal Space Wolf Citadel miniatures.



As usual, the adversaries of the Marines are alien and most deadly...



... lurking in the shadows, ready to shred the Terminators to tiny pieces.



Dark 'n eery...



In the end only 1 Terminator pushed through to the correct room-cluster. But after a good cleansing fire in the corridors, he too went KIA...

Yeah, this game is awesome! And, hell yeah, this game is DEADLY for the Terminators. (Bad PR for their weak armour against unarmed aliens...)*


* Actually, that's not correct, they're not unarmed. Genestealers have four arms ...

After collecting various 6mm Epic 40K miniatures for some years it's time for a descent inventory.

It took me one long evening to unpack many boxes and ziplock bags. I even discovered some unopened blisters bought years ago. The desk was covered in Imperial troops: Adeptus Mechanicus, Imperial Guard and Titan Legions.

Imperial Armour

The image above shows a portion of the Imperial Armour. In the background are miniatures from MechWarrior that I can use as Leviathans etc...
My plan was to create themed detachments while still aiming for a rounded amount of points. Designing (3rd edition) detachements like this allows me to select miniatures pretty fast when playing another battle.

Knights and Imperial Guard

When I discovered that there were a lot of Knights and Robots in my collection, I decided to start me an Adeptus Mechanicus army, based on the army list that appeared in Firepower Magazine. I ended up with around 1600 points AM and an uncountable amount of points for the IG.

And after all this detachment-building, writing drafts, calculating totals in Excel and putting parts of armies on every empty spot in my room that I could find... I GOT FED UP. Seriously. I had enough. Pleasure overload. Inventory blues.
So I repacked everything and started planning to paint an overseeable amount of miniatures. A smaller amount. ONE detachment of Tau. It's better to focus on one small portion of a collection than to unpack it all. Because I'm fighting against a problem that many other players face: UNPAINTED miniatures.

There should be a microbadge for this: "Owner of Too Many Unpainted Miniatures".

Time to refresh my Epic 40,000 knowledge. It is my intention to start playing this game again with new players. But I haven't been playing Epic myself for years... Still, great memories of Epic 40,000 battles remain and are encouraging me to reboot my 6mm scale hobby.

In this second session report I'll revisit the game flow with two vanilla Space Marine detachments. I'll try out the basic movement and shoooting + assault. (Testing firefights and multiple detachments is for next time.)

Oooooon the left side: 200 points Ultra Marines.
And on thé right side: 200 points of angry Spaaaaace Wolvesssss!


You will notice a slight variation in detachment composition. The blue guys have an Assault Squad and the Grey lads have a Librarian. (Note: the 3 square slates in the pictures count as buildings.)

Now for the game. Step one: draw an initiative counter --> yellow. That means the Space Wolves go first and choose a regular move. The Raider moves 20cm and the Rhinos speed up to 30cm. There's one Rhino that only moves 25cm to unload his Tactical Squad who then move 5cm each. (A unit loses 5cm when embarking/unloading.)
Now the Ultra Marines can move. They choose a special order "Assault" and place a green dice to indicate this action. All units then make a regular move. I deliberately did not disembark the Space Wolves to experience the impact of this decision on the battle results.

Let's draw another initiative counter for shooting --> yellow. Only three units with firepower are in range: the Land Raider and two Space Wolves Tactical units. The Land Raider has special Anti-tank weapons and chooses the closest vehicle and rolls 2D6, scoring 4+ on one dice. The HQ Rhino is hit, the infantry inside rolls a 4+ and is saved. The Rhino is lost. The Ultra Marines detachment now receives one Blast Marker.
The two Tactical units have a combined firepower of 2, shoot at vehicles in the open, resulting in 1 dice roll, and unfortunatelly a miss.
Now the Ultra Marines may retaliate. It's their turn to shoot. (Shooting alternates between detachments. One player's detachment, then a detachment of the other player, and so on...)
Because they are on "Assault" orders, the total firepower is halved. Shooting from the blue side was swift and resultless...



Let's draw another initiative counter for War Machines, even when none are in-game. --> blue.

Let's skip to the Assault Phase. Now it gets interesting. This is where the abstraction in the rules of Epic 40,000 shines, and where you can really make a killing! -*EVIL_GRIN*-
Only two initiative counters left in the cup, and the draw reveals... --> blue. It didn't really matter who got to go first because there was only one detachment on "Assault" orders. All units from this detachment may move again now, and infantry moves (charges) at double speed! The Assault Marines with jump pack move at triple speed!!!
It's clear that all Ultra Marines can reach their targets and start close combat with the Space Wolves.



Those poor Rhinos are sitting ducks. The infantry inside cannot be used in this close combat. The Ultra Marines total a whopping 26 as Assault value. The Space Wolves bring 9 in return. When consulting the close combat table we find the Space Wolves are "Overwhelmed". True to the reality, this close combat system is a good abstract simulation! The winner needs to roll 2+ to kill a unit in close combat, the loser needs a 6+.
Not much of the Space Wolves remain and the detachment is "Broken" and retreats up to 20cm. The retreating Terminators now make a roll to rally and only 1 of 5 blast markers remains. A last stand presents itself ...



Game over! Morale value of the Space Wolves is 0. (You have to substract the morale value of each detachment that falls under half strength from the total army morale.)



First impressions (again): Smooth, abstract and realistic 40K battle simulation!

Now that the return of Adepta Sororitas to Warhammer 40K is near, I want to finish my smaller scale army of these sisters of battle.

Some time ago I posted an image of my Onslaught Miniatures purchase from the US. I also posted a preview of the detachment lists for the army.

Now's really the time to start building this Epic army!



The image above shows the composition of all Infantry Units. With only a small amount of bags, I am able to build a descent set of playing units. (600 Points for Epic 3rd edition using the fan-list "Armies II".)

Planning on re-learning Warhammer Epic 40,000 with these.


A little more paint and flock and they're fit for battle.

I made a detachment card for each army. All detachments are 200 points. Easy to mix 'n match and get new players into trying 6mm miniature gaming.

I could not resist buying a pre-order boxed set from Games-Workshop. The new miniatures are just TOO cool to pass by.



"House Van Saar; the technological powerhouse of Necromunda, creators of the finest weapons and armour of all Houses."

I always wanted to own the "Van Saar" gang ever since the original release of their metal 1st edition. Never found any for a reasonable price at eBay...



So that's why I started building the new plastic gangers! And OW-MY these miniatures DO look good. But they have sooo many different pieces. It's a real plastic puzzle.



But since I love the smell of plastic glue in the morning, the high amount of pieces per miniature does not scare me.



These guys look bad-ass. Can't wait to field them. Currently in doubt about the coloring scheme: will I go yellow or lightblue ...

Relearning Epic 40,000

More than ten years ago I had an absolute fabulous time playing a lot of Warhammer Epic 40,000 tabletop battles. The 3rd edition of this 6mm miniatures game by Games Workshop Ltd. received a lot of flak by veteran 6mm players. This negative feedback by the vintage established Epic community obfuscated the existance of this MARVELOUS 3rd EDITION RULESET! You hear me well, there is nothing wrong with this game. It shines. It's smooth, it's tiny massive 40K! But indeed, it's not 2nd edition. And that's good. It's a new stand-alone game.

My knowledge of the rules I once mastered is now rusty. So I took it upon me to relearn it and I started a tutorial game. 200 Points of eldar versus 200 points of Tau. Only one detachment in each army. Too small for a normal game, but great as tutorial.



Both armies started around 2 meters from eachother and I placed some rocky scenery in between.



I immediatelly relearned that the miniatures in Epic can move crazy amounts of centimeters each turn. It's not because the miniatures are only 6mm that you can afford to use a smaller tabletop. Quite the opposite is true, for Epic you need at least a table of 1 by 2 meters. My Saim-Hann Eldar march moved 3 times 30cm!



Incomming! The first barrage by the Tau struck target. The Eldar detachment took some Blast Markers which are used to determine the will to continue fighting / leadership.



Here I was reading and rereading the rules for ranged attacks. You measure if the target detachment is in range, roll to hit, and then remove enemies. But what if there not all enemies are in range of all shooters... This needs study.



Then the Firefights. Great rule. Hard to masters. I played it wrong today, but after some study again later, I now remember.



It all end bad for the weak Tau who tried to get in close combat. Don't do this Tau! Not in Epic, not in WH40K!



Conclusion: Epic 40,000 has some rules that seem weird or even twisted at first glance. But once you understand why they are in place and what kind of action they actually simulate it all makes perfect sense. However the learning curve for Epic 40,000 more difficult than Warmaster. So I'll wait some longer to introduce Epic to players who are not familiar with miniature games. I'll show Warmaster first.

A quick and dirty paint job:
1) spraypaint black
2) drybrush pink
3) drybrush bronze metallic
4) paint red details
5) highlight orange
6) wash turquoise





These are the bottles I'm using. Some are ancient, and still liquid!



These Goliaths are clothed differently by wearing body armour. But I kept a consistent paint pallette for the entire gang.

Only two weeks left in 2017. And I challenged myself to paint my entire vintage Goliath gang. (It's about time, no?)

So, here they are. Have a good look, because after I'm finished speedpainting these, a lot of the details will be gone. Covered in too thick layers of paint.
