Miniature Games Construction Yard

In this blog I'll talk about various miniature games. Custom miniatures and minor conversions are my favorite pastime. I'll cover scenery making and painting too. The WIP you'll see here is all about Necromunda, Epic 40,000, Warhammer Fantasy 5th Edition, Warmaster and Warhammer 40K 3rd Edition.

Long time ago there were some unidentified miniatures in a lot I won on eBay. I decided them to be fair enough to NOT throw them away. And now I finally found a use for them. I've been collecting 40K Space Wolves here and there lately. The unidentified miniatures could be used as Space Marine Scouts for the Space Wolves chapter.

I also happened to have a vintage Rogue Trader Warhammer 40K Scout with a missing leg. When going through my Chaos SM bit box I found him a matching leg. With some TEC-7 glue it is now firmly attached to the metal miniature. I sure hope he does not get corrupted by Chaos now ... We've seen enough traitor legions lately.

EDIT: The previously unknown miniatures are from the boardgame Havok Skirmish Battle Set.

The new kids on the block from GW: Primaris Space Marines.

I'd give them following stats in Warhammer Epic 40,000:

Support:
Primaris Space Marines Squad (1 unit)
20 points per unit
+7 points to add Rhino

Movement 10cm
Range 35cm
Firepower 1
Assault 3
Armour 4+
Rapid Fire, Stubborn

Now lets search for suitable 6mm miniatures... Or should that be 7mm miniatures?

Past friday I visited the boardgame fair Essen SPIEL 2016 in Germany. While it's not a miniatures wargaming oriented fair, there are still a lot of interesting things to see. Here's my small selection. But offcourse there was many more to buy, see and play.

A very nice Warhammer 40,000 display.

A preview of new miniatures for X-Wing! Sabine's TIE Fighter, U-wing, ...

The rumour about Squats (or Demiurgs) returning to Warhammer 40,000 is getting louder. I take no chances. Recently stocked up on some extra Epic Squats. In short: I'm ready to expand the army!

It's never enough ...

Time for a new Epic army! There are many rumours about Sisters of Battle returning in Warhammer 40K, so I wanted to be prepared for the hype. There's a nice range of 6mm miniatures by Onslaught Minis. They're called the "Sisterhood".

Ordering from the US was always very expensive due to import taxes but now there's a shop in the UK: Vanguard. So I sought myself the ideal combination to reach 600 points worth of Warhammer Epic 40,000 miniatures. The army list I am using is available at http://www.toco.be/homerules .

Buying only 4 Sisterhood blisters provides me 3 detachments totalling 601 points. I have to add 1 plastic Land Raider, 5 plastic Rhino's, 5 Razorbacks, 1 plastic Whirlwind and 1 Inquisitor Space Marine infantry unit. (I could use an extra 5 converted plastic Rhino's to replace the metal Razorbacks.)

Main Force ... 195 pts

Canoness in Rhino ... 49 pts
Sister Hospitaller ... 10 pts
Sisters of Battle Squad in Rhino ... 31 pts
Sisters of Battle Squad in Rhino ... 31 pts
Exorcist Whirlwind ... 10 pts
Sisters Retributor in Immolator ... 32 pts

Ordo Hereticus Inquisitor in Land Raider ... 105 pts
Seraphim ... 15

Honestly. If you see this promo picture above. You want it, don't you? I know you want it! Well I wanted it too and bought it. I was in need for a hangar in certain Necromunda scenarios. While it's designed to suit 19th century based games, I think it works in modern or futuristic games too.

It is wise to strengthen the walkways by glueing some cardboard strips underneath. The walkways come in various parts and some might "rock" a little when unsupported.

I went for an alternative layout of the first floor. Plans are in motion to integrate this hangar in my Adriatic Town...

Building Interiors

Games like Necromunda or Infinity thrive on scenery. Without buildings, walls, barrels, equipment, vehicles and other scenery it would be a boring point and shoot dice-rolling game.

Many years ago I had a go in making modular buildings. There were 6 in total and the interiors were decorated. While they don't look super on pictures, they were great to play Necromunda battles.

I used many different materials. Electricity cables, plastic bottles, foamboard, ...

The advantage of having detailed scenery is that you can use it as objectives in battles. Hacking a terminal, destroying a generator, ...

Here's a compilation of the scenery I had.

Oh sweet nostalgia, what great time we had

Why am I talking in past tense? Well I gave away all scenery in the pictures long time ago. I expect it ended up in a dumpster some time later. Doesn't matter, I had a great time with it. And now's a different time. There's great scenery for sale for excelent prices.

http://www.microartstudio.com/ and http://4ground.co.uk/ are great exemples.

Note: This is the continuation of my retrospective. Following blogposts will be about my old miniature paintjobs and scenery making. All images show work from +/- 15 years ago.

The scenery we used for Necromunda skirmish battles was cheap. It was an amalgation of various throw-away products. But with some paint the final results were always satisfactory.

This Imperial Assassin has been in my Necromunda gang for a long time. He's one of the coolest and sinister miniatures. No expression, no close combat pose, just "pure kill".

Creativity is cool in the miniature games hobby. Anything goes, as shown by my custom rocket launcher objective. I really like the way how I painted the goggles.

The famous jungle fighters from Catachan. Now gathered for some Necromunda gangfighting.

Warhammer Epic 40,000 was promoted with a bright yellow Imperial Fists army. I couldn't resist to paint my Space Marines in those chapter colors too. What a mistake I made! Yellow must be the most dreaded color to paint miniatures with. And back in those days there was no yellow basecoat spraypaint by Army Painter...
soblue

Still, I like what I see.

The ruins above were made by using all plastic ruins from the base game. I mounted them on two wooden boards and added various tiny details.

It's great to see all those little details like trees and barrels filled with toxic sludge. But in my experience this is not neccessary for 6mm games. It's better to use only a small color palette for the scenery. And all those tiny details won't have any use in the game anyway...

Since I don't own this scenery and miniatures anymore, I have quite a job to do... I want an Imperial Fists army again! And ruined cities!
