Miniature Games Construction Yard

In this blog I'll talk about various miniature games. Custom miniatures and minor conversions are my favorite pastime. I'll cover scenery making and painting too. The WIP you'll see here is all about Necromunda, Epic 40,000, Warhammer Fantasy 5th Edition, Warmaster and Warhammer 40K 3rd Edition.

When I started collecting Star Wars Miniatures I always envisioned large tabletop battles. The battle of Hoth has appeal for many Star Wars fans, but I always liked Episode VI most. (Until Rogue One came out! Now EP VI is my second most favorite SW movie.)

Not to float off-topic, I started making some scenery specificly for Star Wars tabletop battles. And no, I'm not going to buy SW Legion. The business decision to make their game 35mm instead of keeping it compatible with the previous 28mm range killed the momentum. I don't feel like buying another range of the same mini's.

In my garden shed I have been making some wooden bases and drilled some holes in them to hold nails. These nails will be used to keep in position small branches from a real tree.

I've cut these branches from a tree and let them dry out for quite some time. They have a diameter of 3 to 4 cm.

The foliage selected from aquarium decoration makes the scenery pieces more forest-like. They now serve as difficult terrain.

I'll be playing a 28mm tabletop battle between Ewoks and Scout Troopers anytime soon using SW Miniatures game rules (replacing squares with inches for moevement). (And activating squads instead of single mini's...)

While you're all waiting for my battle report about Orcs versus High Elves, I present you a report that I have written some time ago.

Ahsoka Tano and Kanan Jarrus...

...versus Darth Vader!

Scenario: The Fulcrum Rendez-vous

The rebels must handover an important data disk to Ahsoka Tano. Unfortunatelly, Darth Vader is aware of this transfer and has set up an intercept mission under orders of Moff Tarkin.

Kanan Jarrus starts to the left of the map and Ahsoka's squad (see army lists below) starts at the right. The mission is a succes for the rebel player(s) when the data disk token reaches Ahsoka. The dark side wins if Ahsoka is killed or the data disk is intercepted.

Finally, the disc is in Ahsoka's hands. A victory for the Rebels!

Army Lists

Corran Horn counts as Kanan Jarrus

These four squads make it possible to play this scenario with up to 4 players.

My laserprinter has been printing some A4 puzzle pieces. Glued together they form a new challenge for my Star Wars Miniatures.

These custom maps are actually quite good thumbsup

Great quality images and cool strategic options. Can't wait to play on these!

Past friday I visited the boardgame fair Essen SPIEL 2016 in Germany. While it's not a miniatures wargaming oriented fair, there are still a lot of interesting things to see. Here's my small selection. But offcourse there was many more to buy, see and play.

A very nice Warhammer 40,000 display.

A preview of new miniatures for X-Wing! Sabine's TIE Fighter, U-wing, ...

One year ago I received some nice prepainted Star Wars miniatures for my birthday. One year later, the same rules apply.

No, I'm not 9 years old

PS: This really IS a cool set. It has a cartoonish style. Well designed by the Lego engineers.

A different kind of miniatures today... I guess I'll never grow tired of making Lego.

There's a great advantage to these Star Wars miniatures: they come prepainted!

Now work has begun to make my own episode VI armies:

The metal bases were very cheap. Only 0,01 or 0,02 Euro each!

The last two Stormtroopers were siamese twins I had to cut apart with a sharp knife. Operation succeeded succesful!

Some sand on the bases and paint-repairs and I'm finished.

You might have noticed that I am a huge fan of Warhammer Epic 40,000. Now before you all jump up and shout; "we like 2nd edition more", allow me to explain my sympathy for this BRILLIANT game-system.

I had been playing HeroQuest, Warhammer: The Mass Combat Fantasy Roleplaying Game (1st Edition) and Necromunda a lot before Epic 40,000 was published. While reading a lot of White Dwarf monthly magazine, I did see a lot of battle reports of the 2nd edition Epic called Space Marine. But it was not for sale anymore. Then there was Epic 40,000 and I immediatelly went to my FLGS (yes, they still existed back in the days) and bought me the base game box with Orcs and Space Marines.
By reading the rulebook, it was love on first sight. This work by Jervis Johnson was simply brilliant. For a game at this scale (many many many units of infantry and a lot of tanks and even flyers) the rules were abstracted is such a way that the game moved smoothly and still kept the feeling of war in the 40K universe. It didn't matter if a tank got killed by splatta guns or vortex missiles, if the FIREPOWER was enough, it died. Just like one would expect.
Because I really liked playing MB boardgames, I did fancy strict rules and guidelines with added flavour in the form of a backgroundstory and a theme. Combined with my love for miniatures, Epic 40,000 was a direct hit. It was the perfect combination of huge amounts of miniatures and strict rules, while keeping immersion in the theme intact.

But when you browse the internet you'll find a lot of negative comments on 3rd edition, and a lot of praise for 2nd edition. I totally understand this by knowing where this comes from. Players who DID play the 2nd edition were used to a lot of details about the armour and weapons on each and every unit and trooper. And 3rd edition changed this drastically. So they were very disappointed. And I understand. But this 3rd edition is a completely new view on the game! Don't compare it, praise it! Skirmish games like Necromunda and Infinity have few miniatures and very detailed rules. Games with somewhat more miniatures like Warhammer or WH40K have a little bit less details, and some gameflows are more streamlined and abstract. And in my opinion it is well suited for a game like Epic 40,000 with massive amounts of miniatures to have very streamlined and abstract rules.

Epic 3rd Edition does this perfectly well! That's why I designed many fanmade extensions and homerules for it. And "Star Wars" is one of them. I'd really love to have a wargame with miniatures based on the Star Wars universe. Because of various licensing pittraps the game does not exist. ... You'd think ...
I saw those mediocre but Star Wars themed pocketmodels and I immediatelly wanted them to use in Epic 40,000 games. Finally I could fight massive battles with clones and battledroids.

The pocketmodels need some adjustments to bases but for the rest they're perfectly fine to use them.

For the moment I'm working on the republic army.

I'll paint all remaining visible parts of bases black. I deliberatelly won't be using green and flock or static grass because I want my pocketmodels to be able to fight on any kind of surface. From snowplains to deserts, from jungles to hi-tech worlds.

Try to see through the imperfections of the pockermodel miniatures. Try to envisage massive battles with the Clone Armies and Separatists. That's what we all want, no?
