For too long have I ignored the calling of Wyrdstone. Because we're all grounded here in Belgium because of the Covid outbreak, it's time to again plan travelling to Mordheim: City of the Damned!
My bits box has plenty of loose miniatures to form warbands. Skaven will be the first. After all, Mordheim is swarming with these vermin.
The Henchmen:
4 Verminkin with spears and shields.
These rats are minor conversions from GW's Plague Rats sprue.
5 Verminkin with swords and shields.
The oldest plastic GW miniatures. True vintage OldHammer stuff!
The Heroes:
2 Black Skaven with swords and bucklers.
I had a set of Warhammer: The Island of Blood Skaven Clanrats dormant in a dark corner of the bits box. These two guys with hoods are just perfect as dark silent assassins...
1 Assassin Adept with halberd and shield.
With a minor conversion to give him a halberd this rat is ready to lead the pack. He looks viscious and mean. He's the ideal backstabbing leader of this vile Skaven warband.
I intend to do a speed painting job on these with black, brown and red. That method worked fine on my Goliath gang for Necromunda. (See earlier blogposts...)
"To Mordheim!"
Miniature Games Construction Yard
In this blog I'll talk about various miniature games. Custom miniatures and minor conversions are my favorite pastime. I'll cover scenery making and painting too.
The WIP you'll see here is all about Necromunda, Epic 40,000, Warhammer Fantasy 5th Edition, Warmaster and Warhammer 40K 3rd Edition.

In this Blood Bowl match report we'll be fielding two 600,000 credit teams. The other players remain in the box.
Match highlights:
Kick-off!
Mighty Reserves
Going for it. Went for it.
Ball-bearer pushed back, but still standing!
Humans pass to safety but fail to catch...
Skaven retrieve the ball and paaaaaass!
Run 7 squares, going for it, goiiiing...
TOCUHDOWN!
Score: 1-0.
Sneaking past defenders
RAM! And K.O.
The Human defender runs all the way from the endzone towards the rat with the ball and rams him hard. Both attacker and defender go down. The Skaven is K.O. and sent off field. Unfortunatelly for the Humans, another Skaven picks up the ball and scores a touchdown.
Two fight. Third runs (and scores). Score: 2-0.
To keep this blogpost interesting I'll refrain from posting too much pictures of the second half. Here are the second half's highlights.
Strong Human breakthrough at the right.
The Skaven box the ball-bearer in but to no avail. The Humans throw a qiuick pass, catch the accurate pass, going for it, and score their first touchdown!
Accurate pass and TOUCHDOWN.
Score's now 2-1. After this touchdown by the Human, the Skaven try a long bomb pass but it is out of bounds. The throw-in is in favour of the Humans. They knock out 3 skaven. Then 4! That's a lot of wounded rats leaving the field. Then comes a quick pass, but the Humans fail to catch. A rat picks up the ball, but fails its dodge. Retrieved by the Humans, a second touchdown follows. Ending the match with a 2 - 2 score. What an awesome game this was. Thank you forviewingreading!

The Skaven team for my Blood Bowl league was built straight from my bitsbox. But these hungry critters ate eachothers tails...
Spare tails are hard to find on eBay so I had to be inventive. There was a certain HeroClix miniature with a tattered cape. I cut it to pieces and there were my replacement tails!
Tec-7 glue is strong and rigid enough to glue the tiny pieces.
I even got a teamname out of this conversion: The Skaven Redtails !

If you decide to make a Plague Furnace from the famous GW kit pictured below, then you'll have some great leftovers. I've shown one in my previous blogpost. Now here's what I've done with the Grey Seer.
The image could use a little bit more light, but I think you see what the result looks like. It's quite a dynamic miniature now. I'm sure it will attract a lot of resistance when on the tabletop battlefield. This will be a missile magnet! ...
screaming Grey Seer
His left hand will hold a dagger. I still have to glue that one.
Rat Ogre plague censer bearer fanatic
When buying miniatures on eBay you save a lot of money. But often you'll end up with incomplete sets. AND THAT's GREAT! Because then you'll have to get creative and start converting.
My Lightning Cannon was missing one wheel. Nothing a shield couldn't fix

Great numbers of ratmen need to be guided into ordened regiments...
Here are the result so far:
Two regiments Stormvermin. One with black fur, one with white to represent the Albino Guard.
Two regiments of Skaven Slaves. Both to use as cannon fodder
Three regiments with Plague Monks. The metal versions include Plague Censer Bearers. One of the coolest Skaven miniatures around!
Two Giant Rats regiments with Packmasters. Fodder. For cannons.
One Rat Ogre "muscle pack" regiment.

One of the greatest things about GW's dual-kit-boxes is the fact that you will have a lot of extra's. It's not different with the Skaven Bell of Doom. If you choose to make it a Plague Furnace then you'll have a spare Grey Seer and a very cool Rat Ogre. (Pictured below.)
I managed to puzzle the spare components in such a way that it left me with an extra rat ogre to add to my army. He's Clan Pestilens inspired. A rag over his eyes and a plague censer in his (strong) arms.
The four rat swarms I had were very difficult the handle. I really had to rearrange them onto regimental bases. Now the Packmasters are able to control these ravening rodents with ease.
My Rat Ogres are second hand buys. So I had to arrange them in a way that they all fit nicely next to each other. I opted to have three regiments of three Ogres each. Just the ideal size to use them in my Warmaster 28mm games.

They're here. And there are many. Rats, plenty-o-rats!
It starts with the big mutated rats. They roam the streets at night, stirred by the evil Skaven Packmasters.
No Skaven army without the armour piercing Jezzails. Ideal to cut down knights in shiny armour. Pop pop pop, down they go!
Anything else that needs a beating will meet the (dumb) might of the Rat Ogres. These enormous walking heaps of muscles will pound any enemy down, never to stand up again.
The best way to lead an army of nervous Skaven is using a mighty Grey Seer as general. He'll be pushed along the battlefield on a Screaming Bell tower. The sound of doom, doom for the enemy that issz!
It takes a courageous (or foolish) Grey Seer to summon a Vermin Lord. But one thing is sure, the Vermin Lord will kill plenty. Be it enemy, or friends...

You can make ANY Skaven type from one regiment box. I bought an old regiment box with Skaven Clanrats to use in Advanced Heroquest. With some small items from my bits box I was able to make a Grey Seer, Gutter Runners, Stormvermin and even Censer Bearers!
Skaven Censer Bearers
A flail from the undead sprue with some holes scratched into the ball looks great. With the correct colors of paint it will be a perfect poison fumes dispenser for the Plague Rat.
Skaven Grey Seer
This Grey Seer was achieved by adding horns (undead sprue) and creating a staff from the banner bits. The streched out arm is a zombie arm that comes from a banner.
Skaven Grey Seer
Stealth and backstabbing! Clan Eshin must be present:
Skaven Night Runner
The Night Runner has a cape that originated from a Bretonnian helmet.
Skaven Assassin
By adding a small block from the plstic sprue and attaching the Skaven's leg to it, I was able to make a very dynamic pose. It looks like he leaps towards his target, ready to stab it. On his tail is a third blade, just like Deatchmaster Sniktch.
Skaven Stormvermin
When these rats are given a black or white albino fur then they'll be perfect Stormvermin. I don't need many since they'll be used in quests for "Allied HeroQuest" (toco.be/ahq).
Skaven Clawmaster
(These miniatures were originally converted by me to use in Advanced Heroquest.)
