Miniature Games Construction Yard

In this blog I'll talk about various miniature games. Custom miniatures and minor conversions are my favorite pastime. I'll cover scenery making and painting too. The WIP you'll see here is all about Necromunda, Epic 40,000, Warhammer Fantasy 5th Edition, Warmaster and Warhammer 40K 3rd Edition.

DIP LAST! Paint first, then dip. Do not dip before painting. DIP GOES LAST!

I made an error.

My plan was to spraypaint all 1:72 scale mini's white. And then wash them with Army Painter dip. And would then drybrush the mini's for a quick 'n easy finish. Speedpaint so to speak...

My plan failed. The reason is that I have always used the drybrush technique when painting my heroic scale (28mm) mini's. Dark under coat and then easy and forgiving drybrush on top. With some painted details in combination with a wash here and there.

However, drybrushing 1:72 scale mini's is not possible (by me). So I ended up with bright white mini's, terribly small, and lots of detail. (You'll be surprised how detailed these Revell, Imex, Matchbox mini's are!)

From gallery of tocoking

I had to paint the smallest details I ever encountered. And no painting-tricks up my sleeve. I was a drag ... I'll post the stage I'm in now. Not finished at all. Lot's of painting to do... And I thought I had a cunning plan to speedpaint these. NOT!

From gallery of tocoking

I'll certainly dip last, after painting, in my next 1:72 scale project!

Conclusion:
1) undercoat white (to show all those details)
2) paint all areas with detail brush
3) dip
4) restore the bright colors (like yellow and pink)

OR

1) undercoat white
2) dip (to show all those details)
3) stop (and play with these tabletop ready mini's)

My last blogpost about hired guns for Legends of the Old West are the United States Marchal, Cookie, Renegade Soldier and Free Trapper.

From gallery of tocoking

With the United States Marchal you'll be able to collect bounties. And dollars are always welcome in campaign games.

The Cookie always you to increase the maximum size of your posse (gang).

The Renegade Soldier rules can be found in expansion Legends of the Old West: Frontier – Blood on the Plains. They shoot indiscriminately into fights. So don't be surprised of friendly fire...

The Free Trapper can move quickly through woodland and might be usefull in certain scenario's.

I really wanted to add a miniature in scale 1/72 to represent the "Soiled Dove" special character, but unfortunately didn't find one at the moment. Hints welcome...

Been hobbying with vintage 1/72 toys soldiers lately. They're all made from soft, bendable plastic. I ran out of the original bases for the horses so I had to be creative.

From gallery of tocoking

I took a non-permanent marker and inked the bottom pegs. The I held the horse into place on the plywood base. It left three tiny black dots. That's exactly where I then drilled holes to later attach the horses legs. Tadaaa! Fixed! cool

Some more special characters from GW's Legends of the Old West rulebooks. These mini's bring extra flavour to the skirmish game.

From gallery of tocoking

This is the Indian Scout. When hiring him you have the option to give him a longbow or rifle. In the picture above you'll see the mounted and unmounted version of a Scout armed with a longbow.

From gallery of tocoking

And here is the Indian Scout version with a rifle. A also have two unmounted versions of him. The stealth version looks really cool, but is not always practical in games.

If you are interested in Legends of the Old West, then also have a look at
Legends of the High Seas (pirates) or The Lord of the Rings: Strategy Battle Game (Tolkien). The rules are very similar.

Skirmish games from GW like Mordheim: City of the Damned, The Lord of the Rings: Strategy Battle Game and Necromunda have rules to create your own gang/group of miniatures. These miniatures can then be used in a campaign and learn new skills and gain extra weapons.
But these games also have lists with hired guns/freelancers. You hire these (stronger) miniatures for one game, or even more. If you have the credits/money.
GW's Legends of the Old West is not different. All the rulebooks have an entry with special characters. These mini's bring extra flavour to the game. It was fun to rummage through my bitsbox and find the right mini's for the corresponding rules for special character.

From gallery of tocoking

From left to right you'll find the Gunslinger, Pinkerton Man, Preacher (or Reporter) and Chinese Worker.
The third miniature can be used to represent a Preacher or a Reporter. Unfortunatelly I didn't have two of these mini's. So I'll have to use it for both roles.

From gallery of tocoking

In the expansion Legends of the Old West: Frontier – Blood on the Plains you can find special characters for the native Americans (or Indians). On the picture, from left to right: Medicine Man, Berduche v1, Warchief, Berduche v2. The Warchief can only be used in large battles and is not available in skirmish games for posse's (the equivalent of gangs in Necromunda).

I've started playing the legendary computer game Red Dead Redemption II. It made me want to continue work on an old project: Legends of the Old West. A great skirmish game by GW.

I coupled similar miniatures to generate both mounted version and a version on foot. Superglue was required to assemble this soft plastic.

I undercoated them all white because I am going to paint with watered down paint. This will greatly improve the details, certainly for this small 1/72 scale.

M.A.S.K. versus VENOM

"Laaaaaaaadies aaaand gentlemen, today's race: MAaaaaask versus VENOoooom!!!"

Board Game: Gaslands: Refuelled

Another Gaslands: Refuelled session report for you. This time I'm using MASK vehicles in disguise mode. The light blue Chevy is Hurricane. Next to him starts Firecracker, a red pickup truck. Their adversaries are the blue Corvette Wolfbeast accompanied by the orange Pontiac GTO Stinger.

Board Game: Gaslands: Refuelled

Right after the start Firecracker swerves in the way of Stinger, forcing him to take a strong turn, off track. Hurricane shoots away full throttle. Wolfbeast is also hindered by Firecracker's manoeuvre and has to take a longer route through the forest.

Board Game: Gaslands: Refuelled

The MASK team are the first cars to reach checkpoint 2, where all weapon systems get activated. The straggling Stinger gets in the line of fire of Firecracker's flamethrower, but he's just out of range of the large burst template. The race is decided. Team VENOM will not be able to reach checkpoint 3 before the MASK cars.

Board Game: Gaslands: Refuelled

Wolfbeast presses his luck and unfortunatelly the slide template brings him into collision course with some buildings...

A quick 'n simple racegame. Sweet mechanics. Long live Gaslands

Gaslands: Refuelled is a game I recently fell in love with. I played the pc game DeathTrack (1989) a lot in the early nineties, so the theme immediatelly connected with me. You can also compare it to Carmageddon, another cool pc game.

Board Game: Gaslands: Refuelled

Since I'm a Star Wars fan I gave the game a try by using Pod Racers. You can read about that in this post on BGG.
This game is a blast! The racing mechanics are smooth and simple. Not too much analysis paralysis. A race game should be fast.

From gallery of tocoking

Gaslands is a welcome change for a miniatures collector like me. I've seen my share of sci-fi and fantasy monsters. This game now allows me to use old Matchbox and new Hot Wheels toys to convert and then effectively use in a tabetop game. While Pod racing is very fun, there are other interesting themes... The 80's had great cartoon shows. One of them was MASK. Vehicles in conventional mode could transform into action mode, revealing weapon platforms and other tech. The second series of ten episodes was released in 1986 and changed the format of the show to a racing theme. M.A.S.K. and V.E.N.O.M. competed in races for prizes, or as distractions as V.E.N.O.M. tried to pull off one nefarious scheme after another. By this point, V.E.N.O.M. were aware of the identities of the M.A.S.K. team whereas they had been kept secret in the first season.

Well, here's my chance to own 1/72 scale MASK toys and play a great game with them! My first try will be the iconic maroon Kenworth W900 Tractor Rig. I rummaged through my son's Matchbox car collection (which for 50% are my old toys) and found a black truck. Ready for painting!

With a simple paintjob I hope to make him look like this wonderful toy set:

Now let's find myself some more Hot Wheels/Matchbox/Majorette cars... Here's a list I'm using. It might help you to build your MASK force too.

Firecracker: mid-1980s Chevrolet K30 Dually pickup
Gator: Orange Jeep CJ7 Renegade Off-Road vehicle
Jackhammer: 1985 Ford Bronco
Thunderhawk: 1985 Chevrolet Camaro Z28
Hurricane: Turquoise Chevrolet Bel-Air 57 street car
Outlaw: tanker truck
Rhino: maroon Kenworth semi-tractor
Volcano: blue monster truck (all terrain van)
Raven: black Chevrolet Corvette
Firefly: orange dune buggy
Slingshot: white recreational van
Bulldog: diesel truck tractor
Stinger: orange pontiac gto
Switchblade: futuristic stealth-looking attack helicopter

My yearly visit to CRISIS (a wargames convention in Belgium) is a highlight of the year. The amount of wonderful demo tables is just fantastic! All important traders are there and there are lot of second hand gaming meterials to buy. Can't wait for 2018's edition. "After CRISIS is before CRISIS!"

Following images did not capture the grandure of this demo table. It was HUUUUuuuge. I guess around 10 meters long. Filled with fully painted Warhammer Fantasy miniatures and alternatives. Great to gaze upon. Surely a beautiful sight to behold.
(For those who couldn't make it to CRISIS 2017, you'll have to find a professional photographer who took pictures of this table to truly see how cool this was, because the camera from my mobile phone was unable to capture this immense scenery.)

I recently discovered there was another game like Mordheim and Legends of the Old West. This was a shock for me! Liking both previous titles very much, it was great to see another skirmish game with ties to Games Workshop.

Board Game: Legends of the High Seas

PIRATES! How cool's that! arrrh

I was very lucky to find a rulebook for a descent price. This skirmish game tends to be rare. It's written by Tim Kulinksi (a very friendly person btw) in 2008.

This game can easily be played in the 1/72 scale. This has a huge advantage: low cost. Generally all 1/72 plastic soldiers/miniatures are very cheap compared to the 28mm miniatures business.

The miniatures I bought are from Orion.
