I have two new 9 Card Games: 300 Spartans and Franky's 1st Christmas

I'd like to wish everyone a very happy holiday season! I hope you're enjoying time off with family and friends and getting a few board games in. I spent some time today making a few print and play games as gifts while my kids played with their new toys. We had a great day!

It is still Christmas for a few hours (at least in the Western US) so I wanted to let you know about a free new Christmas game designed by my friend Jake Staines called Top Deer. This is a 2-4 player game for ages 8 and up. In the game, Santa's reindeer breeder has announced his retirement so each player is trying to compete for the job. The players race tokens around a track, breed deer, and sell them to each other to prove themselves the most qualified for the job. The game requires a single printed sheet, a few tokens, and two decks of playing cards.
Links to the game can be found in this announcement thread.

Top Deer is actually the 4th game in a series of Christmas games that Jake has created for the BGG community. His previous games are:
Citizen Cane
Cinnamon Rolls
Ridiculous Last-Minute Christmas Shopping Family Brinkmanship

Each of these games is designed to fit inside of a Christmas card so it can be easily shared with family and friends. The games are all easy to make (none of them require any assembly) and can be played with common components.

Those of you who are interested in Pay-for-PNP games may be interested to know that there are several sales going on right now for tons of PNP games.
RPGNow and DriveThru RPG are both having a sale on games designed to bring children into the hobby.
Wargame Vault is currently having their big Winter Offensive sale with 25% off games from tons of publishers. I got a little Christmas spending money in my stocking this year and I suspect some of it will be going here. The sale goes until Jan 02.
Wargame Downloads is also having a big sale with tons of items (currently 8 pages of games) either for free or at a big discount.
Full disclosure: I am an affiliate for Wargame Vault, DriveThru RPG, and DriveThru Cards.

I'll be back in a few days with the regular PNP News posts including a few new games from yours truly. Until then, enjoy the holidays and any time you have off from work. Merry Christmas!

That's all the news for this week. Thank you for reading and thanks as always for your thumbs and geekgold tips to the post.

There is a microbadge available for fans of the blog designed by Jake Staines. Thank you to everyone who has purchased it!

Happy Back to the Future Day! We may not have hover boards and in-home fax machines, but we have the next best thing.... board games you can get for free just by printing them! And this post has a ton of them! So celebrate living in the future by crafting some of your favorite designs.

Because it has been so long since I covered the new games, I had originally intended to break this into a couple of smaller posts. But I kept adding games and eventually I had them all in one giant epic post. So enjoy! I'm hoping that I haven't missed anything in the past two months but if I have, please let me know.

PNP Highlights

Silk Road Maker by Aydagul Cubukcuoglu, Erhan Cubukcuoglu, and redesigned as [boardgameversion=22628]Arcade Road Maker[/boardgameversion] by Nick Hayes
This week I wanted to take a look back at a classic PNP game. Silk Road Maker is a 1 to 4 player tile laying game. The game is available for free in several different versions which can all be found in the Files Section on the BGG Game Page. The game was originally themed as building roads between Chinese cities but I'm going to take a look at one of my favorite redesigns in which you are trying to make paths between console games at the arcade. Each of the versions has the same rules and components, just with different art so if arcade games aren't your thing, you can print up one of the awesome other themes.

Arcade Road Maker. Image credit: Chris Hansen

In Silk Road Maker, players are competing to build the longest roads on a 5 by 5 grid. You are trying to connect locations on the edges to each other using the longest road possible. Each tile edge that the road passes through earns 1 point. Each player in the game will receive 30 tiles and their own board. One player will lead the round and turn over all of his or her tiles. That player will then draw tiles randomly and the other players will pick the same tiles from their stack. This way everyone is placing the same tile. The players can then place their tile on their grid anywhere they want - but once placed it cannot be moved. When the grids are full, players will count their scores and determine who placed the tiles the best.

A completed game with a less-than-impressive score of 25. Image credit: Chris Hansen

Silk Road Maker is an easy to make and fast playing game. You can make as many sets of the game as you would like (for multiple players) or just make one for solo play. The game is still quite a bit of fun but is starting to show its age a bit. The game has some strong puzzle aspects and lacks any solitaire goals other than beating your high score. Nonetheless, despite several other tile laying games building on this concept over the subsequent years, this remains a very fun and challenging game. It's a great gateway PNP game because it's easy to make and the rules are very solid. I highly recommend it - especially if you like old school arcade games!

And now... on to the games!

PNP Highlights

Endless Nightmare by Morten Monrad Pedersen
In honor of the Contest theme of this post and the Halloween season, I wanted to look back at one of the previous entries. Endless Nightmare is a spooky solitaire push-your-luck game designed by the author of the incredible Thematic Solitaires for the Spare Time Challenged Blog. It was entered in the 2013 Solitaire Print and Play Contest where it won the Best New Designer award and 2nd Place in the No Assembly Required Category. The game is just two sheets and requires no cutting. Just print it and get playing!

The game in play. Image credit: Chris Hansen

The game comes with two versions, a basic and an active. In the basic game, you are caught in a series of nightmares and being chased by a shadow monster. There are many ways to lose and approximately zero ways to win. devil All you can do is try to get a high score before your inevitable demise. Your overall goal is to move along the circular progress track to get through nightmares without getting caught by The Shadow, but you must also maintain your courage and your sanity. Each turn you'll decide if you want to move through your nightmare or try to save your courage.

The basic version is fun, but the game really shines in the Active version. In this version, instead of simply rolling to advance through a nightmare, you must act the nightmare out. Different challenges involve holding your breath through a level, setting up an obstacle course for your die, or trying to stop a stopwatch on a specific tenth of a second (I'm terrible at this). This adds a whole new level of craziness to the game and is a lot of fun to do.

Despite the fact that you can never win, this game is a lot of fun, has easy rules, and is simple to make. I highly recommend that you give the game the try for some Halloween solitaire fun!

New Games from the 2015 Solitaire Print and Play Contest

Austerity by Jake Staines
Austerity is a solitaire game. The game is available for free and can be found in its contest entry thread. In this game, you are running a country that is struggling with a lot of international debt. You must try to run the company and get out of debt. The PNP is incredibly easy with just a single board and some cubes required. There is also an optional single sheet of cards for more variety. This game was the grand prize winner of the contest.

Hello and welcome to the PNP News! One of the things I've noticed during the writing of this blog is that sometimes, by coincidence, a bunch of games that are very similar will be released at the same time. This week is one of those times so if you are in the mood for risque party games, this collection of PNP games will not disappoint. If you're not, don't worry - there's still plenty of other new games to play.

Let's get to the news!

PNP Contests

Due to personal issues, the voting in the 2015 Two-Player PnP Game Design Contest has been delayed. A voting form should be up soon at which point the entries will be ready to be played and voted on. If you're looking for some exciting two-player games, this contest always has several excellent entries. I will update with the new voting deadline when it is available.

The design period for the 2015 Solitaire Print and Play Contest ends on August 03, 2015. If you are designing a game for the contest, please have it completed by that date. If you're not a designer but you're looking for a good solitaire game, you can't go wrong with this contest. I've played many of the entries and they are stellar this year.

The 2015 MicroGame Print and Play Contest is currently in the voting period. There are 25 games in that contest that are all small and easy to build so go check them out and vote for your favorites. A few of the games from this contest have already been covered in this blog.

Finally, there is a new contest dedicated to games that can fit into an Altoids tin. The 2015 Mint Tin Design Contest is currently running and accepting entries now. Important dates are below:
Entry Deadline: October 31, 2015
Voting Deadline November 30, 2015

PNP Highlights

One-Minute Waterloo by Pete Belli
One-Minute Waterloo is a solitaire game. The game is available for free and can be found in the Forum on the BGG Game Page.

Let me start this highlight with a bit of a refresher for those who have forgotten their Battle of Waterloo history. The primary fighting in Waterloo took place just south of the town near a small farmhouse called La Haye Sainte. Napoleon had committed his 1st and 2nd Corps there to fight Wellington’s coalition forces and take the high ground. He planned on saving his Old Guard units to support that fight but unfortunately for him, Prussian forces attacked his 6th Corp units in a small nearby village called Plancenoit. This village protected Napoleon’s right flank so losing it would be catastrophic. As his units were overrun, Napoleon was forced to move his Old Guard units there. This thinned out out his best soldiers and ended up costing him the battle. Obviously, there are a lot more details to the battle but that one-minute summary gets you enough to start playing the game. It also takes as long to read as the game takes to play.

One-Minute Waterloo attempts to recreate Napoleon’s decision regarding placement of the Old Guard. Should they support the beleaguered 6th Corp in Plancenoit? Or should they help attack Wellington’s forces and drive them from the battlefield? True to it’s name, the game plays in about one minute (including setup and take down time) so there’s not much more to the simulation than that.

The game set up with all pieces. Image credit: Chris Hansen

Each piece in the game represents a full Corp. There are no markings on the piece other than a unit designation, but none are really needed since each has the same movement range (1 hex) and combat value (1 strength). Units can support battles in adjacent hexes and combat is resolved via a strait strength vs strength matchup. The units and combat actually reminded me a little of combat within Diplomacy. The player can modify the odds by including Napoleon in the battle or rolling a die that will randomly increase or decrease the French strength value. If Napoleon was involved in combat, the player earns a bonus point (but faces a ⅙ chance of having him die). After conducting combat, the player will determine victory. There is a range of victory levels depending on how the combat went. If the player was able to drive Wellington’s forces out of the La Haye Sainte hex, the game is won. If Napoleon dies in combat than the player immediately loses.

End of game with a 6 point victory. Image credit: Chris Hansen

Pete Belli previously designed a game called One-Minute Bulge which was meant to be a bit of a joke about the huge number of bulge games that were trying to simplify the battle. But One-Minute Waterloo was designed more seriously with the intention of providing an actual simulation in a very condensed time. Stripping out the typical wargame chrome to make a simplified game is an admirable goal, but the end result unfortunately doesn’t leave a lot to the game. In most games, only 2 or 3 units will ever move (and one of those units moves to the same hex every time) and the combat is so simple it it allows only for only the barest amount of strategic planning. The thrill of trying something risky (such as including Napoleon in a battle) is gone because the stakes are so low. Since there is no level of investment required to play, it is hard to care if you win or lose.

The PNP game is simple to make with only a handful of counters and it is very low ink so it won’t cost much to build it. The game also has a nice clear rule book with lots of examples that make it easy to jump into the game. You can build the game and play it several times in the time it takes you just to make an average PNP game. However, unless you are a Waterloo game completest, I don’t know if I can recommend it too highly. The game is far too high level to really recreate a Waterloo feeling. And even after playing it 5 or 6 times, I have still spent far more time building the game, reading the rules, and writing this article than I think I have playing it. After a few games I feel like I’ve seen everything the game has to offer so I don’t anticipate pulling it down off my shelf much in the future either. But if you’re interested in Waterloo and want to see how a few various Old Guard scenarios would play out, there isn’t a faster way to do it than this game.

Note: The designer provided me a copy of the game.

Welcome back to the PNP News! This post covers the latest PNP Contest news, tons of new games, updates to existing games, and a lot of new Kickstarter games.

I've noticed more Kickstarter designers releasing games with some sort of PNP options. It's really exciting to see how many games are utilizing PNP to either offer a cheaper alternative to a boxed format or even giving it away for free to let people try-before-they-buy. I hope these designers and publishers find the format viable and that the trend continues!

Let's get on with the news!

PNP Contests

If you haven't checked out The 2015 Two Player PNP Game Design Contest yet, get over there soon! There are tons of great games to play. The voting deadline is June 07, 2015.

PNP Highlights

Cheese Chasers by Bran McMillin
Cheese Chasers is a 1 to 2 player game. The game is available for free and can be found in the Files Section on the BGG Game Page. This week I want to highlight another classic PNP game. Cheese Chasers is a tile laying puzzle game in which you are mice trying to gather cheese, avoid cats, and disable mouse traps. The game is playable solitaire or as a two player, although I suspect most people play it solitaire. Each turn you draw one tile from your stack and place adjacent to the last tile you played. Points are earned by placing your mouse next to cheese. If a cat is ever orthogonally adjacent to a mouse, that mouse has no power and cannot capture cheese or disable mouse traps. If there are ever three traps on the board that have not been disabled (surrounded by mice), you lose.

A solitaire game with a score of 101. Image credit: Chris Hansen

This was one of the first PNP games that I ever built. I've played it surprisingly often over the years (but many of those plays were actually on the Andoid app). The game is easy to learn, simple to build, and fast to play. I reach for this game often when I need a 10 minute distraction.

A game ended (three traps out) with no points scored. Image credit: Chris Hansen

Unfortunately this is the first game that I've highlighted in this blog that I cannot give an enthusiastic thumbs up to. The game is extremely luck driven and has a few problems as a result. There is a well known sequence of cards (Cat-Trap) which if drawn back-to-back prevent you from being able to disable the trap. (There is no way to place a mouse near the trap if the cat is nearby.) Also, the order cards are revealed can have a big impact. If the three traps are drawn before you have enough mice to disable them, you lose. These aren't deal breakers since you can easily reshuffle and start again with only a few minutes lost, but they are enough of a frustration that I give the game a rating of just OK. However, if you're looking for a quick puzzle and don't mind the luck factor, this game is an excellent one to add to your collection.

Welcome back to the PNP News! It’s been beautiful weather here in Utah so I’ve been spending some free time hiking and getting the the garden ready for all the various salsa ingredients I’ll be growing this year. Of course, in addition to all the great outdoor activities, there are also a a lot of awesome PNP games to play! I’m a little slower to update than normal this week so there are a ton of new games and news to cover!

First off, for those who are interested in solitaire gaming, the 1 Player guild is officially voting on several categories, including PNP specific categories, including best PNP game and several designers who have created PNP projects. (Full disclosure: Thanks to me work with the annual Solitaire PNP Design Contest, I have been nominated as well as a BGG User who has contributed to solitaire gaming.) Voting ends on May 12, 2015.

Please visit the thread to vote for your favorite solo games and designers!
1 PLAYER GUILD AWARDS 2015 - FINAL VOTING - THE POLLS ARE OPEN

PNP Contests

The 2015 Two Player PNP Game Design Contest stops taking new entries and enters the playing/voting phase this Friday (May 01, 2015). If you have a game to enter, get it done quickly. Otherwise, please check out the many incredible games that have been designed and vote for your favorites. The voting deadline is June 07, 2015 so you have lots of time to play the games.

PNP Highlights

This week I want to focus on a classic PNP tile laying game, Micropul by Jean-François Lassonde. This game was released over a decade ago yet still remains popular with the PNP game players. The game has a lightly attached theme about harvesting energy but is essentially an abstract game about building and claiming patterns. Each tile has large symbols called micropul in two colors. There are also smaller symbols called catalysts that activate special powers when placed adjacent to micropul. Players have three stones that can be used to claim groups of micropul that have been completely closed off (unable to attach any more tiles to them).

The game is playable either as a solitaire or two player game. Both versions play equally well which is perhaps one of the reasons this game has such staying power. The two versions play very differently. In the solitaire version, you can work to build large groups and carefully optimize each tile placement. In the two player version, your groups will likely be much smaller since your opponent will be trying to either close them off when they are not worth many points or make them impossible to close so that they aren’t worth anything.

The fan community has responded to this game amazingly and made a ton of graphic redesigns to the original’s basic black and white graphics. Carthaginian has created 10 beautiful versions (I typically play on his blue/green round version) and others popular ones include a hand-painted farm setting by Archinerd and a floral setting by ethim. You’re certain to find one you like and may end up building multiple sets for yourself as I have.

There is a reason this game has been so popular for so long. The game is fun, brain burning, easy to teach, and simply to build. Depending on the artwork you choose, this game can be incredibly low ink as well so there are very few barriers to entry, even for new PNPers. I highly recommend that you check out this game and play both the solo and two-player versions. Micropul is a 1 to 2 player game. The game is available for free and can be found in the Web Links Section on the BGG Game Page.

Welcome to the PNP News! I took some time for myself last week so this post contains two weeks' worth of news. This post contains several games with very unique themes, such as taking the best photo at a Trailer Park BBQ, playing as competing ideas in a drunk person's brain, and a sexy time vampire game for consenting adults. If you're looking for something off the beaten path, this may be the week for you.

Before I dive into the news, I need to announce a change for upcoming PNP Highlight posts. When I started the PNP Highlights section, I mostly intended to cover classic PNP games from my collection. (Upcoming games include such titles as Micropul and Free Trader.) People who have been building PNP games for years will have likely heard of most of these, but my intention was to introduce people who may be newer to PNP to the great games of the past they may have missed. I've written these highlights as mini-reviews which I fear may not be noticeable on the game's page. So I am going to start expanding the highlights I've written into actual reviews that are posted on the game's page. This will make them easier to find for readers who may not click on a News Blog to get reviews. My intention is to publish these within a week or two of the Highlights section appearing (so you can read it here first).

One thing I didn't anticipate about the PNP Highlights is the huge response that this feature would have - I get several requests per week from designers asking me to highlight one of their older games. While I have tried to be as accommodating as possible, I simply do not have time (or the ink) to craft every one of these games. So, going forward, if a designer would like me to highlight one of their older PNP games, I am going to start requesting that he or she mails me a physical copy of the game. I will then work the game into the Highlights schedule and shortly after publish a review on the game's BGG page (both will be marked indicating that I received a review copy of the game). I realize that this may be expensive to designers that live outside the US, but we can try to work something out if shipping costs are a problem. I will update the FAQ with this information.

With that covered, let's move onto the news!

PNP Highlights

Ladybug Lunch by Rebekah Bissell and Jonathan Warren
This week I want to highlight an excellent PNP children's rummy game. In Ladybug Lunch, players have flowers that have become infested with aphids. To get rid of them, each player can move a ladybug piece around the flower leaves to eat the aphids. This is done by collecting and playing matching sets of cards. For each set of three cards that you place, you can move your ladybug to a new leaf. For each card that you add to an existing set, you can move an aphid. This allows you to create groups of aphids that you can eat all at once (or spread out your opponent's groups). Ladybug Lunch is a reimplementation of an older game called The Gaston Game. It incorporates several of the expansions to that game and also adds some new features. In addition to the regular set collection rules, players also may play action cards that allow aphids to be eaten without moving your ladybug, stealing a card from an opponent, or adding aphids to an opponent's plant.

The artwork in the game is done by Rebekah Bissell and as usual it is excellent and very appropriate for children. There is some amount of reading comprehension required for the game (the action cards all have some text) but when my wife and I played with my daughter we were able to help her understand the action cards and still have a very enjoyable game. The game has 99 cards (with optional card backs) and also several aphid pieces and player boards. It is a fairly sizable PNP project and will also use a good amount of ink. If you'd like to teach your children the basics of rummy and set collection, it is hard to improve on this game. But don't let the cute artwork and simple mechanics fool you, adults will enjoy this game as well. This game is definitely worth checking out. Ladybug Lunch is a 2 to 5 player game. The game is available for free and can be found in the Files Section on the BGG Game Page.

Welcome back to the PNP News. This is the second part of my post for the weeks of March 1st - March 14th. In this post I will be talking about the New Games and Updated games that were released.

For those who are interested, I was recently interviewed by the 1 Player Podcast along with Todd Sanders, Jake Staines, and Ryan Mayes. We discussed the 2015 Solitaire Print and Play Contest. The audio version of the podcast hasn't been released yet but you can watch the video now.

As always, I hope you enjoy the post and please join in the conversation in the comments below. Thank you for thumbing the post as you come by.

PNP Highlights

Jasper and Zot by Nick Hayes is solitaire game about two wizards who live next door to each other and compete for vegetable prizes in the town fair. Jasper is an excellent gardener and grows prize winning pumpkins every year while Zot can only grow slimy asparagus. To get his revenge, Zot has raised an army of zombies to destroy Jasper's pumpkins. As Jasper, your job is to protect your pumpkins by transforming Zot's zombies into flowers which you can then destroy. The game plays in about 15 minutes which usually means I play several games in a row.

The game is an homage to the arcade games of the 80s and successfully evokes the feeling of games with ever approaching enemies like Space Invaders and Centipede. Each turn you will roll two dice to determine the location and arrangement of new zombies which then move relentlessly towards you until you can destroy them or they destroy your pumpkins. While the game features zombies, this is not a horror game and features no violence. Nick has smartly themed the game around gardening so people who don't normally enjoy the zombie genre can still enjoy this game.

This is a very easy PNP game with only a board and small sheet of single sided counters. The game was in fact originally entered into a design contest where all the components had to fit on one page though there is now an alternate version where all the components are much larger. (I recommend the larger version because it is easier to handle the pieces.) This game has been a favorite of mine since it was released and the hope of getting more games like this helped inspire me to create the Solitaire PNP Design Contest back in 2011. The game is easy to build, quick to play, and very fun. I highly recommend it.

Welcome back to the PNP News! This was a huge week with 22 new games released. It took a long time to put this post together but I think it's worth it as many of these games look terrific!

As always, I hope you enjoy the post and please join in the conversation in the comments below.

PNP Highlights

This week I want to take a look at Pellinoria by Julian Anstey with artwork by Daniel San Miguel. This is a two to four player microgame in which players select characters to perform their actions. It reminds me a little bit of Citadels but I've also read several comparisons to Machi Koro (although I don't know that game to judge for myself). In the game, nine characters are set out underneath a series of numbers. Each player rolls four dice and then selects two characters by matching two dice to the associated number. The player than immediately gains the affects of that character such as gaining money, fighting a dragon, earning chivalry points, or cashing these in for victory points.

The game contains 20 cards and a few number tokens. Players will need to provide their own dice (four per color for each player) and several cubes or other tokens to keep track of resources and final score. My family has really enjoyed playing this as it is very fast playing and has little downtime for the players. (Unlike Citadels, there is no assassin style character that can prevent another player from taking his or her turn.) There are a set of basic cards and a set of advanced cards which can be mixed and matched to your preference. If you're looking for an easy-to-make game for casual gaming, I highly recommend Pellinoria.

PNP Highlights
This week, I am going to look back at the PNP game that started it all for me, Zombie in my Pocket by Jeremiah Lee. I don't recall where I first saw the game, but I do remember it was the first PNP game I ever made. I had seen other PNP games before and assumed they were low quality junk, else why would they be given away for free on the internet? The artwork by Kwanchai Moriya is probably the first thing that caught my notice as well as the tight rule book and active forum. I decided to give it a go and pulled out a few sheets of card stock and a pair of scissors and built a quick copy. It is safe to assume that if I had not done so, many of the things I've done since, such as the Solitaire Print and Play Contest and this blog, would not exist.

In Zombie in my Pocket, you must explore a spooky house filled with the undead and find the totem hidden in the evil temple room. If you can find and bury that totem in the graveyard before midnight, the zombie plague will end. If not, the zombies will endure forever. The game mechanics are simple, each turn you move to another room or outdoor area by adding a tile to the house. With that tile you draw a card which will have an event allowing you to search for an item, get attacked by zombies, or simply get some chilling text. These cards also act as the game's timer. Each card has three actions on it, with each being performed at a different time. When you've gone through the deck three times, the game is over.

A very easy game where the Evil Temple and Graveyard were found quickly. Image credit: Chris Hansen.

Over the years, Zombie in my Pocket has developed an amazing community around it. The game is released under a Creative Commons license so other designers have been free to tweak it or redesign it entirely. There are tons of variants and rethemes available in the file section giving this game a much greater replayability than it's simple rules might normally grant. If zombies aren't your thing, you can try out the game using a Star Wars, Predator, Aliens, Calvin and Hobbes, Christmas, Fairy Tale, or probably a dozen other themes! If you're bored of the basic game, you can spice it up with one of the 15 variants available in the five scenario books. The list keeps growing too with new variants released often.

The game is very easy to print and build. In its simplest form, there are 16 single sided tiles, nine cards, and a pocketmod rule book to print. For those wanting a nicer copy, there are optional card and tile backs, item tiles, and time trackers to make the game nicer. The game plays very quickly and is very easy to set up so its easy to play multiple games in a row. The game was a Golden Geek winner back in 2010 and it still stands the test of time. It's hard to think of a PNP game that is this easy to make and still so much fun. If you haven't tried it yet, go see what you've been missing.
