Anyone who's read this blog knows that I'm a big fan of the excellent Combat Commander: Europe from Chad Jensen and published by GMT Games. Sadly though, my ownership predated this blog and YouTube channel. However, as the new fourth printing of the game was recently released, I decided it would be a great time to do an unboxing as well as give one YouTube subscriber a free copy and introduce them to the best tactical WW2 wargame there is. Some come close, sure... but this one is the gold standard.

Details are in the unboxing video below. Entries must be on the actual YouTube site, not here on BGG, to be valid.

Thanks for your support!

In a completely shameless ploy to get more YouTube subscribers, Facebook and Twitter followers (at least I'm being honest), I'm giving away a new in shrink copy of Scythe: The Wind Gambit the latest expansion to Scythe.

Entering the contest is simple via Rafflecopter...

You'll get five entries if you visit our Facebook page, five entries for subscribing to our YouTube channel, three entries for following us on Twitter, and one entry per day for retweeting about the contest.

While you have to choose one of the options to get an entry, you don't have to do any of them specifically. So if you're not on Facebook or Twitter, that's fine of course. And you can always immediately unfollow or unsubscribe (I don't want anyone against their will!)

Entry must be via the link above (or below).

Drawing will be held sometime after January 13, 2018 and the winner will be notified by email and announced here (so subscribing here would be good as well).

Shipping will be to the USA only. No purchase is required (not that I'm selling anything anyway).

Thanks to BGG for allowing me to list this contest.

Over the past nearly three years, lots of articles, reviews, tips, images, etc. have appears on this blog... I was starting myself to get lost trying to find something!

So to remedy that I've created a new geeklist: Ones Upon A Game: Reviews, Mods, Images and Videos Index to refer to find the potentially helpful diamond in the rough.

I welcome you to subscribe to the list as a whole or just to games that are of interest to you... if such a thing is of interest to you.

Gonna Find My Boardgame, Gonna Hold it Tight...

There used to be, in the infancy of the interwebs a sort of game played on Google where you picked two unrelated words (like "Dessert" and "Penguin") and try to get EXACTLY one hit in your search. Now with every one and their brother "sibling of unstated gender" putting up websites, it's pretty hard to make that happen - especially with Google trying to anticipate what you really meant and showing other matches and...

Sorry, rabbit.

So to that end I remembered that when I wrote my review of Pandemic: The Cure, that in the BGG database (at the time) there was only ONE game with "Cure" in the title. That has since expanded to two -- if you include the "Experimental Meds" expansion).

But are there others?

So this list is for games in the BGG database that contain a word that no other games in the database include. Expansions to the same game do not count toward eliminating a game (as in the Pandemic: The Cure example above).

So can you find any?

Add them here -> BGG's One (Word) Hit Wonders

...What's a game girl, if you never lose?
Ask a winner and you'll probably find
Ooh, Jackie they've lost at sometime.

Sadly, there can only be one winner. But it could be you.

So if you're interested in winning a copy of Thunder in the Ozarks: Battle for Pea Ridge, March 1862 designed by Hermann Luttmann and published by Revolution Games (II), you have one day left to visit YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_HxLoBuAio

Subscribe and comment (there, not here) that you want to be in the drawing.

Sometime tomorrow I'll randomly select a winner and post it here on BGG.

Until then, I leave you with the (of course), Ozark Mountain Daredevils and their 1974 hit... Jackie Blue...

Decided to run another one of these...

So I'm thinking of a game. It's definitely listed on BGG in the database.

First person to guess it, will win 50GG (big deal? Depends how much you value GG).

Rules are simple: You can ask in the comments any YES/NO question. I will periodically check this thread and reply with the answers. Using these answers, you should be able to figure it out. However, other readers will be using this data too.

No private messages will be answered.

In addition... YOU ONLY GET ONE GUESS AT THE ANSWER. You can retract your guess up until the point that I reply to it, but after that you're out. So use your guess wisely.

I will, as a courtesy, wait at least 10 minutes after a guess to acknowledge right or wrong -- to allow retraction time.

And for everyone who thumbs this post, you will be entered into a drawing for another 50 GG to be given away after the game is correctly guessed. You don't have to play the guessing game to be entered.

So I'll kick things off with the first question.

Q: DO YOU (that's me) OWN THIS GAME?

A: NO

-------------------------------

The game was: Crossboule

The winner of 50GG for the first correct guess was:

---------------------------

So why Crossboule

Never heard of the game until this week. However, I think I may pick up a copy as it looks pretty cool actually.

Similar to last year's contest - on this same day ([WE HAVE A WINNER] - Guess the Game - Win 100 GG), the number of the game itself was the key.

The game number in the BGG database is 91666, or September 16, 1966 -- the day I was born. Which is 50 years ago today and therefore the meaning behind the 50GG prize. But I felt cheap since last year was 100 GG, so I added the Thumb drawing too.

I looked at 66916 (being a programmer, I like Y-M-D, though 660916 is more to my liking, but out of range for BGG), however that was some silly RPG thing and not in scope here.

I did not look at the European way of 160966, but seeing how it was a Monopoly variant (Monopoly: Schiphol), I'm glad I didn't. Plus I hate that way of showing dates as it just seems odd. And confusing. Especially in the first 12 days of the month. So I used the Ameritrash date format.

Anyway, hope you all had fun and congratulations to the winners!

Time to let your creative storytelling juice flow... With the help of the fun Rory's Story Cubes, let's have a weekly contest of the imagination. Well the contest is real, you'll be using your imagination.

Each week I'll roll dice from a set of Rory's Story Cubes. I'll then post the nine images. Your job is to post a comment with a story using all nine of the cube's images.

Enter as many times as you like each week. The contest will start each Sunday evening (at some point, I'll try to be consistent)
