I didn't get out of bed the wrong side or anything but I do feel a tad grumpy about this promo. Not because I have anything against the designer (the EXCELLENT Mr Risthaus) or, indeed, the game itself BUT because - in my opinion - it's a horrible looking promo all round. Especially when you compare it to yesterday's pretty King's Will affair. Tiny pictures and icons on a huge rectangular expanse; and the pictures, where they can be bothered to be present, look like Rights-free clipart: a beardy man in a flat cap?! A solitary helmet? Some stacks of shitty little coins?! If one takes a peek at the actual base game, it looks clean and brisk (if a little plain) but at least it looks like something on the table!

Am I wrong? Is this just Grumpy Old Man Syndrome?

Poll: Grumpy Old Man or Wisdom-stuffed Sage?
1. How was it for you?
2. What would you change about it?

As this post pops up it's festive little bonce over the Yuletide parapet (approx. 0600HRS), I shall be blearily going through 'The Three Esses' in prep. for the murky, drizzle-borne drive down to Cardiff and work. Today's promo looks good, dunnit? Lots of chits and stuff! Only a couple more days and then its Xmas Hols time...well, mostly, as I'm hoping to scavenge a few overtime hours 'testing' during the dead week between 'The Day' and 'New Years'. Games? Well, yes, probably but - of course - not as many as one would imagine or hope; in all likelihood, I shall stand ready with some bijou card games or something like Azul or Meeple Circus only to find everyone "don't really feel like it at the moment" or "is feeling a bit tired, actually" or "can't take learning lots of new rules" etc. Is The King's Will any good? Bleurgh, it's going to be a veritable drought of gaming in reality, isn't it? Mind you, I can surely count on the generous hospitality of the Batesons over the holiday? I hope so otherwise I may start strangling the neighbourhood's cats one-by-one...

Dead Santa.

Nope; not one idea or recollection about this one; am I supposed to know more? Did I miss a particularly-important memo? To be fair (to me), this is a 2015 game which is - for all intents and purposes - "Ancient fucking Egypt" in gaming relevance terms: kids today, eh? No attention span.

(*sigh* I suppose I ought to make an effort and describe what's going on here)

This is a great tile and no mistake and is well worth paying the 50 euro cents plus 10 euros P&P from the BGG Marketplace! I mean, on just the one location tile you have:
the ability to trigger ANY keyword effect (under the name, see?) eg. Swamp, Treasure, In vitro fertilization
the adventurer who discovers this location gets TWO Shouting Chests (the associated tokens) and a Level 4 Cleric Lover
Shouting Chest tokens can be traded for 1000 gold each at the next Trading House OR used to scare the Storm Dragon off any Mountain Stronghold terrain.
The Clerical Lover (see icon) is Level 4 which means they can't carry Treasure Items but they DO generate Food tokens every Initiative Phase. And prevent the Adventurer's morale dropping below "Disillusioned".

Overall, an EXCELLENT gift on this chilly December morning.

Cacao confuses me or, rather, whatever the Hell this promo is for confuses me: is it a promo for Cacao or Cacao: Chocolatl? Or is Cacao: Diamante – New Huts a promo for Cacao: Diamante, a game as-yet unreleased? I mean the art style is the same but that doesn't mean it's actually designed to be used with actually any of the things I've mentioned.

#bamboozled

While I'm sorting a few things out here, is Cacao: Chocolatl backwardly-compatible / mixable with Cacao or are they completely standalone AND NEVER THE TWAIN SHALL MEET?

#perplexed

And why is Phil using rock from Imhotep in his Barenpark 'monorails' expansion? Is this some grand plan from the Australian Ludomeister to build the ultimate mega-modular game? Do the cacao-farming, rainforest dwellers desire tea and cake at 11AM and sushi for lunch?

We met up with a number of good peeps, outside the Hall 3 entrance on the Thursday evening of Essen Spiel 2017, including the Perfect Information chaps, ancillary pals and gamers and a white-haired, fresh-faced 12 year old Scandinavian youth by the name of Asger Harding Granerud*. We crocodiled up to the Rüttenscheiderstraße and the den of beer and pigs flesh to find that we'd under-booked the required amount of space and were separated in to Table 1 (by the front door: them) and Table 2 (at the back next to the rowdy Martin Wallace group: me); Asger was in the former group, so I never got to talk to him properly. Ah, well - next year?!

Asger has been having an absolutely splendid 12 months what with the universally-warm reception for Flamme Rouge and recent releases Frogriders, A Tale Of Pirates, 13 Days and Iron Curtain. Indeed, it seems his "whatever the Danish equivalent of a Shed is" has been spurting out eminently-publishable product like a severed Carotid!

Today, gifted by the delightful Adventskalendar, is a super little double-sided promo for 'the Flammer' (as no-one is calling it):

From gallery of tonyboydell

I particularly like the tyre-burns and the car-wrecks; all we need is the definitive Tour de France expansion with defaced roads and all the Asthma inhalers one can eat!

*of course, Asger is NOT 12 years old...he only looks like he is.

There has been a steady buzz about Mr Peer Sylvester's search & rescue solo/co-op and it was recently announced to be re-themed in the Judge Dredd universe (double win for Uncle Tony, then!). I'd picked it up while shopping for birthday/Christmas presents but popped it back on the shelf after seeing a £5 cheaper online option (thus depriving the Cardiff shop of £22); don't feel too sad because I spent £50 with them anyway!

Thus, today's good-lookin' Advent promo is a welcome delight:

My copy has yet to arrive, however, as the weekend's snowy spell has ground the British infrastructure to a complaining halt #karmabites #revengeoftheFLGS

Nope; me, neither.

By way of a distraction - and because it's been a while since we did some punning - any suggestions for properly-Porcine pastimes? Let me start things off:

Sucklingdomino / Hams Of Caledonia
Heaven & Ale & Pork Scratchings
Apples to Apple Sauce / Styfall
Gloucester Old Spot It! / Tammanyworth Hall / Boara Boara
Snowballdonia / Susfjord*
Blood Pudding Rage
Massive Porkness / Gammon Death: Monster
Baconcordia / Hamburgum (obvs)
Wooly Belly / Pig of Love
Through The Sausages (of course)
Great Western (Curly) Tail

*this is VERY clever indeed.

My general distaste for Splendor is well-known around this blog, for sure, so it won't come as any kind of surprise that today's Advent gift - a new thingummyperson tile - causes me to remain wholly indifferent:

Perhaps I should try and verbalise the reasons why this undoubtedly popular, multi-award nominated heavy box of tosh elicits such strong feelings from me? As anyone who knows me will tell you, I am an unprejudiced gamer with a peaceable demeanor and an open mind so it is anathema to many that I, of all people, should have such a strong opinion.

i) it's a set collection race, perhaps the most turgid of all game 'goals'; forever being at the mercy of 'the draw' and/or 'the spitefulness/stupidity of the other players' does not make it challenging or skillful, just a time-chewing exercise in frustration;

ii) the chips are a ridiculous over-production element that lead to postage weight problems and, naturally, an excuse to ramp up the MSRP for what is just a fancy card game at it's heart;

iii) the (so-called) clever 'oppositeness' of jewel costs vs 'permanent free jewel bestowed' is not clever at all; it's just a speed-bump to make the whole tiresome affair dribble onward toward doomsday. You gaze around the table seeing everyone is still a couple of cards away from ending the torture but other groups are already starting new things on the other tables: look! You're gonna be stuck with 'gem trading' for the rest of the night and you know it in the pit of your sinking stomach.

iv) everyone finishes with pretty much the same score at the end; it's just that "Bob took a blue when he shoulda taken a green" or "...the flip of that card - with you as the next player - was a total gift!" or "I was never able to pick up a diamond card" or a million other niggling, pissant excuses reasons.
