DAY EIGHT:

Norm, from the Ross-on-Wye board gamers, is going to be ever-so-pleased with today's gift on
account of him being the only one with a copy of Rococo. I thought it was pleasant
enough but, with five, rather over-long; for that groupthinky cardplay feel I much prefer
A Castle for All Seasons which provides all the shenanigans one could possibly require in
about-an-hour - Perfect!

During the conquest of Montezuma and the Aztec Empire, Hernando Cortes tasted
a warm, bitter drink made with cocoa beans called ‘xocoatl’. This was also called the ‘royal drink,
which Emperor Montezuma apparently consumed 50 times a day. Several hundred years later,
Hercortes Nando tasted a spicy chicken dish and the rest is food-chain history...

6 for 6: remind me WHY I bought this Advent Calendar again? Loony Quest is the board
game video game, right? Hmmmm...if they make it an App then it will disappear up it's own
bum in a recursive puff of smoke!

Milky Way - the snack you CAN eat between meals WITHOUT ruining your appetite... but NOT
if you eat a display box of the spongey buggers, it ain't! Your vomit comes out with the consistency
of a memory foam mattress and that mallow taste will haunt you for weeks. Er, so I'm told. You get
a similar effect from 10 packets of Marmite-flavoured crisps in one sitting too...less mattress
and more 'explosion in a polenta factory', though.

Merry Advent!

Not being particularly familiar with Bohnanza (I've only played the card game twice),
I'm not clear whether this is for the card game or the board game (I've not looked at Matthias'
geeklist or the Frosted Games website at all). It's buttons; quartered buttons; quartered,
bright yellow buttons. I assume this makes sense to someone?

I adore John Wyndham's sci-fi ouevre; all that familiar 1950s society stuff interlaced
with death, aliens and apocalypse. In recent years, this menacing ordinariness has been taken
forward with hilariously-dark glee by Richard Littler and his Scarfolk universe:
http://scarfolk.blogspot.co.uk/ (be afraid; be VERY afraid); here, for example, is Richard's idea
of an Advent Calendar:

DAY FOUR:

I didn't enjoy Las Vegas when I played it, so I am four-for-four in Advent
Calendar goodies that I can't actually use! I'm in danger of becoming a bit of a Scrooge if not
careful! Actually the opposite will be true because, when all this Adventy cheekiness is over, I'll
be giving away the promos I don't need.

Nicolai Poliakoff OBE (2 October 1900 – 25 September 1974) was the creator of Coco the Clown,
arguably the most famous clown in the UK during the middle decades of the 20th century. Despite
having the name Coco, he was NEITHER made entirely of chocolate NOR 'did he think so'.
For centuries, clowns have embodied tragedy, fear and paranoia - at no point are they amusing
or cheerful. They are DEATH. They're not as bad as effing Mimes, though...

DAY THREE:
From gallery of tonyboydell

Of course Colt Express is FUN! It's also award-winning fun! However, the thing that
I love about it the most is the promo potential; it's only just been a year but we have
a Stagecoach, a Delorean "Time Travel Car" and now a Christmas delivery! There's almost
as much promo action going on as with my beloved Snowdonia (which does NOT make an
appearance in this year's Kalendar, but...). So, what OTHER side-order goodies can we expect from
this stetson-wearing frippery?

Character cards for The Man With No Name, Angel Eyes and Tuco?
A Rattlesnake?
Hedley Lamarr?
Politically-incorrect Native Americans?

Actually, all this reminds me of a joke:

Spoiler (click to reveal)
A cowboy is captured by Indians and buried up to his neck in the desert; as he bakes,
he whistles to his horse, who trots over and lowers his equine head to the ground. The cowboy whispers
something in it's ear. The horse gallops off over the horizon. The cowboy survives the rest of the
day and the cold night. As the Sun comes up, he sees a cloud of dust approaching...it's his
horse, with MORE horses! As the group approach, the Indians gather and await their arrival: it's
the cowboy's horse and a wagon of prostitutes, all dressed and ready for 'action'.

"For fuck's sake!" cries the cowboy, "I said fetch the POSSE!!!!"

Grooving 1970s funksters and family-friendly pops stars, Errol Brown's domination of the
UK charts was steady and quietly relentless. For someone of that generation (ie. me),
he was as ubiquitous as a school teacher or your actual parents! My personal
favourite track of theirs is:

DAY TWO:
Hooray!!!
It's an Uwe Rosenberg promo!

Hooroo!
It's NOT for Agricola

From gallery of tonyboydell

I've yet to experience the table-hogging delights of Fields of Arle because:
a) there's no-one in the Boydell household who will play it with me, and
b) I've just spunked all my money on a copy of Keytown!

Still, I'm going to put this one aside in the safe custody of my
deluxe Agricola storage box for the day I get a copy! And that's a Boydell PROMISE!!!

Johnny Depp has become a bit of a stale biscuit these last few years, flopping about on the
big screen like a beached porpoise BUT he's marvellous in this romantic diversion...or at least
he is in my memory of it: he walks along the river of a picturesque French town without falling in
the water or pretending to be a rolling stone so THAT's okay, right? And Edward Scissorhands is
pretty darn excellent! Nobody mention the mangled travesty that is Depp & Burton's Charlie &
The Chocolate Factory
*, however: Michael Jackson as Willy Wonka? Eff. Right. Off.

Merry Advent!

*Any fule kno Gene Wilder is the tops!

"Made it, Ma! Top of the world!". It's a pity that I don't play Catan...
that's the fault of my London-ward gaming pals who, when first introducing it (mid 2000s),
absolutely crushed-and-humiliated me. I hated it then and I feel no love for it now; I'm
sorry, but there you are.

And now, because every Advent calendar must come with chocolate, here's something chocolate-y!

Schokolade des Tages:

Been on a long walk in the woods with the dog and the kids? Cleared the garden of woody and leafy
detritus, possibly with the aid of a blazing inferno? Gone Carol Singing in the nude? Then you simply
MUST reward yourself with a cup of creamy, marshmallow-y, chocolate-sprinkley Hot Chocolate (with
spoon for the decanting of gloopy sweetness) - because you're worth it!
