Miniature Games Construction Yard

In this blog I'll talk about various miniature games. Custom miniatures and minor conversions are my favorite pastime. I'll cover scenery making and painting too. The WIP you'll see here is all about Necromunda, Epic 40,000, Warhammer Fantasy 5th Edition, Warmaster, Warhammer 40K 3rd Edition and Lord ot Rings.

For too long have I ignored the calling of Wyrdstone. Because we're all grounded here in Belgium because of the Covid outbreak, it's time to again plan travelling to Mordheim: City of the Damned!

My bits box has plenty of loose miniatures to form warbands. Skaven will be the first. After all, Mordheim is swarming with these vermin.

The Henchmen:

4 Verminkin with spears and shields.

These rats are minor conversions from GW's Plague Rats sprue.

5 Verminkin with swords and shields.

The oldest plastic GW miniatures. True vintage OldHammer stuff!

The Heroes:

2 Black Skaven with swords and bucklers.

I had a set of Warhammer: The Island of Blood Skaven Clanrats dormant in a dark corner of the bits box. These two guys with hoods are just perfect as dark silent assassins...

1 Assassin Adept with halberd and shield.

With a minor conversion to give him a halberd this rat is ready to lead the pack. He looks viscious and mean. He's the ideal backstabbing leader of this vile Skaven warband.

I intend to do a speed painting job on these with black, brown and red. That method worked fine on my Goliath gang for Necromunda. (See earlier blogposts...)

Working with the guys in the picture above made me change my plans for my Mordheim Mercenary warband. While building a regiment of Flagellants 15 strong, I really wanted to add some in my skirmish games. So that's where I abandonned my plans for a Mercenary warband and started designing a Witchhunter warband.

Here's the Reaper Witchhunter:

And his hired Ogre Bodyguard (on a 40mm base):

Witchhunter warbands have trackers and dogs. And trackerdogs... Adding dogs as tiny base fillers adds to the witchhunting atmosphere. Mantic Games has a grumpy plastic bulldog on one of their Dwarf sprues.

The plastic sprues from the Warhammer Free Company regiment box are perfect for Mordheim. Here's my creative output.

Roaming the woods and secluded byways of the Empire, highwaymen prey on the many coaches and wagons foolish or desperate enough to travel there. These are dark and dangerous men, often employed for their knowledge of cargo charters and skill at ambush. Oft they appear to the naked eye, bereft of their blackened garb, as foppish, charming characters, but that ruse is a genteel masquerade as their cruelty and viciousness will testify. Deadly pistoliers and expert riders, they are an asset to any warband but watch your back, for they are untrustworthy, self-serving men. (as appeared in Town Cryer 26 and Empire in Flames)

I can't keep ignoring Mordheim. I've been playing, converting and collecting Necromunda so much that I have to make a sidestep into Necromunda's Fantasy equivalent.

The official Mordheim books and miniatures are even more expensive than those for Necromunda. Let alone a mint set with cardboard scenery! The picture above is a Highwayman miniature by Games-Workshop. I never bought it because I thought it to be too expensive (like almost every GW miniature). So now I have to make my own version. Here goes...

I had a damaged horse from Battle Masters in my bits box. It was missing its tail. So I added a scalp from a plastic Skaven banner.
The body and legs from the rider are unknown to me. I received them in a lot from eBay.
His head and arms are from the Empire Free Company sprues. (I am using that plastic regiment set to create my human warband for Mordheim. More of them in the near future.)

A sheated sword from a High Elf on his back finished the job. I had to add a sword because the unmounted miniature version also has a sword.

I wanted to use this miniature as the leader of my warband at first. But he'll be a hired gun. Quite literally.

Note: This is the continuation of my retrospective. Following blogposts will be about my old miniature paintjobs and scenery making. All images show work from +/- 15 years ago.

This warband contains miniatures from various producers: Harlequin Miniatures, Games Workshop Ltd. and Rackham. I really like the color scheme. Most Beastmen are painted brown, but the grey skin really makes them "pop". By using the same color scheme on all miniatures it doesn't matter if they are from different publishers. They look like a coherent group.

I recently bought some extra beastmen to be able to use this warband in Mordheim: City of the Damned.
