(Jet-lagging, solo playing Ouija at 4am in a creepy 12-bedroom 120-year-old ancestral home deep in central Philippines...)

Me: “H....A....S....has?”

Me: “Oh, it’s still going...T...U...R...Has Tur?”

Me: That doesn’t make any sense. Who or what is ‘HASTUR’?”

* earth rends *

* sky splits open *

* terrible lights under the sea *

* all bathed in putrid purplish glow *

Me: “Oh. *That* HASTUR.”

In hindsight, playing Elder Sign at 3:00 am (as a result of jet lag from a 13+ hour flight to the Philippines) while in a 12-bedroom spooky farmhouse built in the 1900’s filled with creepy pictures of ancestors long deceased whose eyes seem to follow you as you walk past, and strange unexplained creaking noises...

...was perhaps not the smartest of choices.zombiegoo

The siren song of Kickstarter Island has lured many a board gaming mariner to their untimely demise upon the treacherous rocks, amidst the icy seas of financial peril. Woe betide those who cannot resist the seductive call of the all-in super deluxe pledge, the KS exclusives, the stretch goals, the flashy animations, the glowing previews, the glorious miniatures — and above all, the Fear. The ever-present, all-consuming Fear...

...of Missing Out.

That is the thing that keeps us up at night. That causes us to toss and turn, fitful and restless, overwhelmed by the primal terror, and that awful, gnawing, burning question:

“What if I don’t back it, and it turns out to be the greatest thing ever?”

And the other question: “What it it never goes to retail?”

You sweat. You shake. Your finger draws close to the dark green “Back this project” button, then skitters away like a nervous puppy. You want to press it, but you know you shouldn’t. You can’t move forward, yet you know that you can’t go back. You square your shoulders, set your jaw in resolve, turn and start to walk away...

...then you whirl around and PRESS THAT BUTTON!

You’ve done it. It’s over. It’s done.

Except it’s not done. Not even close. Now comes the crippling self-doubt, the backer’s remorse, even more questions:

- What if it never ships?
- What if it does ship?
- What if _________ finds out?

And the bargaining, the promises you’ve made and broken many times before:

- This is the *last* time. Never again.

Until you see the next one.

Note: this is a work of fiction. Any resemblance to any person is not intended. Especially not me, oh no, not me! This didn’t just happen to me over 10 times last year, oh no way!

Greetings from Manila, where I now find myself, after 18+ hours of air travel. I’m on vacation here for the next two weeks. Although with the jam-packed slate of activities, relatives and friends to catch up with, people to see, places to go, I rather doubt that this vacation will provide any sort of rest and relaxation.

Yesterday I found myself with a little time to kill in U.P. Town Mall, one of the dozens, perhaps hundreds, of new commercial developments that have sprung up, like weeds, in the nearly 18 years since I was last in Manila. I was mildly surprised to find a Toys ‘R Us store, and decided to browse the board game section while my son was getting his haircut.

Their selection is not what we would consider “up to scratch”, as it were.

I brought a bunch of thrifted and crafted board games with me, both to give as gifts, and to pass the time while spending many days with my relatives in the central Philippines, to which we travel in the next day or two. Depending on my internet access, expect more dispatches from Southeast Asia.

As some know, I am currently designing a game called The Cleaner, in which you play a character tasked with wiping evidence from various crime scenes.

Yesterday on another group, someone reacted to my game concept thus: “Is cleaning a crime scene something that people find fun, or want to play a game about?” He then mentioned another game they would joke about, in which one went to an office and filed papers all day long.

Which got me to thinking: some games are about doing not-fun things, yet can be fun. I remember playing the innovative open-world RPG “Shenmue” on the Sega Dreamcast, in which you lived the life of Ryo Hazuki, out for revenge, and part of what you did was work Ryo’s job as a forklift driver at the docks, literally driving a forklift and competing to see how many pallets of storage containers you could stack to optimize your wages. Sounds like a total bore, yet I loved playing that forklift/job simulator mini-game.

What games do you like that are about seemingly not-fun activities, that on the surface should be a total bore, yet you love to play?

As you may or may not know, the 2018 Solitaire Print and Play Contest is ongoing as we speak.

And I have taken the strange and terrifying step of entering an original game idea into said contest: [WIP] - The Cleaner - [2018 Solitaire Print-and-Play Contest Entry] - Contest Ready!

This week I made the newbie error of launching my work-in-progress (WIP) thread before my game rules and Print and Play (PnP, as we say in the PnP community) files were ready to post or download.

I could only watch as other contestants calmly launched their own WIP threads and offered their rules and files for immediate download, cool as cucumbers.

Whereas my thread languished, donwload-less. All the while, my Fear Of Missing Out (FOMO) grew.

So last night, I resolved to push to get at least an incomplete beta version of my game rules and PnP files ready to post and download. Late into the night, I labored. Triumphant, I posted the PDF on Dropbox, and proudly posted my download link to my WIP thread and Facebook groups I frequent. I went to bed, secure in the knowledge that no longer was I lagging behind my peers in the contest.

Only to be awakened at oh-dark-thirty AM with the awful realization that there were many issues in my hastily thrown-together rules that were confusing players.

So I had to drag myself out of bed, haul out my laptop, and spend the next hour fixing issues, clarifying rules, and posting a fresh link to a hastily updated version of my PnP and rules PDF.

What have we learned, kids?

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

I am still having the time of my life, though!

A PnPer never knows what they’re going to build next, so one has to be ready for anything.
