Some of the best things aren't really games.
What is a game? Let's not have that discussion.
Let me just say that this is not an orthogame, but instead an activity designed to elicit feelings of confidence and happiness.
Playable whenever you have a bunch of folk together for a period of time. I played it yesterday as part of my birthday celebrations.
You could play it during a party, or - indeed - even during an evening of playing boardgames together.
Inspired by some exercises that are run in schools.Summary
Everyone writes compliments about other folk that they interact with.
3-100 players? (I played with 20)
5-600 minutes? (we played for about 3 hrs - remember this is a 'background' activity)Setup
Make a little booklet for each person. Fold a sheet of A4 into quarters and write their name on the front.
Place these booklets in an order (maybe alphabetical) on a mantelpiece or other accessible surface.
Place many pencils nearby.
Decide when the game will end.Rules
At any point during the evening/afternoon/period of play, people are encouraged to go to the booklets and write a couple of complimentary sentences in the booklet of each person they have interacted with.
Maybe you like their style, or how friendly they were, or something they did. Maybe you think they are a loving father or a skilled musician.
If you're having trouble writing a compliment, it can be something really minor.End
As folk leave the event, they take their booklets. Hopefully, everyone will have a lovely reminder that they are not a shit person.
I am a full-time designer/artist/self-publisher and I am available for freelance work. I go to cons as a trader and help run the all-day Friday playtest sessions in London. I left my last 'real' job in 2014. I was getting benefits for a few years. I'm currently writing sporadically, but getting back into the habit of daily posts. If you have any questions/topics you'd like me to address, send me a geekmail and I'll probably address the topic within a week.
