On digitising the DVDs
by Bifford

I need to pare down my DVD collection, the amount of them I have is silly. I'll keep my nice boxsets, but the individual DVD films can go. But first to digitise them. I'm trying to use Handbrake, but of the dozen films I've tried only one works. Got any thoughts on a free dvd ripper? Please let me know!

We all hoard things because we don't want to let go. My RPGs are like that, but they will not go away, nosiree. DVDs though take up a massive amount of room and don't really get touched all that much. We like things too much, and I'm a big sucker for that problem!

It all comes back to encumbrance and whether you hit your players upside the head with it. I've always been "whatever you can feasibly hold". Money wise, drag the spoils back to town in a sack then assume they exchange it for other things which they can carry, or stow it somewhere safe. I've never understood monsters who carry gold and things apart from those who like "shineies" but even then that is usually in their nest/lair, not on their personage. In other words I always handwave the gains, or give them a title deed to a house (which I did in CATaclysm) which is then theirs to do with as they wish.

On Getting the Basics Right (a moan)
by Bifford

I bought a dead tree copy of a book I've had in PDF for quite a while. It is the 5th printing of the book (they don't do editions, just reprints with small changes, new art and updates to text), which should give some of you an idea what tome I'm talking about.

I'd dipped in and out of the pdf a few times to read particular entries (it's a monster compilation book) but not read the introduction. It did the usual "use things as written, or use it as inspiration" stuff, then listed what a "monster stat block" is comprised of.

Then I got to the monsters and discovered that several of the "headings" did not tally with the earlier text, and the order was incorrect. As a proofreader and editor I muttered under my breath and shook my head. If the writer can't get these things right, then the editor should; and if the editor missed it, a proofreader should catch it.

It shouldn't be so hard to have: A,B,C,D,E,F. Not A,C,D,B,E,F. It also shouldn't be hard to have the title of those entries actually match your descriptive text earlier in the book, usually by editing the earlier descriptions than every stat block.

On Books
by Bifford

I shouldn't buy more (RPG) books, but I do. I prefer holding a real product for several reasons. They are easier to read, nicer to read, smell better, don't whir at me like the computer fans, and they are easier to move closer to my eyes on days when they are not playing ball so much.

They are not cheap, however, and they take up room, whereas a PDF is usually cheaper and takes up no room except a digital footprint.

I have 77GB of RPG Games (not including solo games, magazines and the like. I have a shelving unit of books.

Mostly these (both types) are not read, but I love them anyway. They are great to dip into browse through. For some sets I am a completionist but others are just a few bits and pieces as I need them. If and when we do manage to move again I think I'll hire a storage container, box them all up, move them into the container until after the move and then slowly bring them out myself (rather than pay to have removal people cart them about).

I've no idea where this article is going, but I just thought I'd talk about books. My latest is the Castles & Crusades "Monsters & Treasure (2019 Compendium)" book with the tribute art cover. I prefer the non-tribute cover personally, but this was available in the UK which saves a ton of money as postage from America is silly money. It's nice to have the monsters in a hand-holdable medium.

On Warmer Weather
by Bifford

Typical. The summer holidays finish, including my holiday week off work, and then the blistering heat hits us. To be honest I don't mind as I'm in an air-conditioned unit at work and I can't stand the heat/humidity; but it is just typical of how things go.

I'm sitting here with a fan on and yet I still can't get my brain to function correctly. The heat makes me tired and my brain sluggish. How do people live and work in the hotter countries of the world? It's not bearable!

I am currently halfway through a proofreading exercise with a new Advanced Fighting Fantasy book, and might have a second (bigger) job to do soon on another book. I also need to start on the next issue of my fanzine, but that can wait a week or so. If the heat can just go away a little I can get my brain to work again....

On Travel Hickups
by Bifford

Firstly, thank you to Farydia for standing in for me last week while I was off galavanting around Disneyland Paris.

We came home by plane on Friday evening. I am so glad we were not due to return on the Monday, or we would have been right up the creek without a paddle (the UK plane telemetry system crashed and burned which caused a huge backlog).

This got me thinking about how, if your travel plans get screwed up it can cause all sorts of problems but also open up new experiences. In actual fact our bus ride back to the airport from Disney took us off the usual motorway route (presumably because of roadworks) and through a fair few provincial French villages, which was really nice actually - seeing all the different houses, new and old all mixed together.

Why not throw this into the mix with your RPG sessions? The horse a character is riding throws a shoe; a wagon's wheel or axel breaks; the caravan you are due to travel with had to detour so never showed up; the route you were due to take is blocked by fallen rocks/wide crack in the ground/raging broken-the-banks river in full flow. Scupper the characters plans and make them think of alternatives for travel or needing somewhere to stay for a short while. Then you can throw social situations at them, such as trying to befriend someone so you can sleep on their floor, or persuade them to let you buy their cart etc. You might just get some great roleplay out of it.

Troll Lord Games is a company who were very much in bed with Gary Gygax from the early days up until his death. He wrote many things for Castles & Crusades, which he is known to have called an alternative D&D 3e. One of those was the setting of Yggsburgh and Castle Zagyg. Due to legal wranglings within Gary's family none of that content has been allowed to be re-printed or digitised. Until now.

TLG have been in talks with family Gygax and they were allowed to do a pre-order of Castle Zagyg: Yggsburgh to "prove to the lawyers" that the books still had legs. This surpassed the goal so the rest of the books (and more) should be forthcoming in the future too. So for all you Gygax (but not WotC) fans, check out the link in my news item:

On The Allure of The Mystery
by Farydia

Hey, it's Bifford's holiday stand-in! Isn't that mysterious? Well, maybe not all that much.

Anyhow, thinking about today's topic, I thought about why I like RPGs so much and one answer (among many others) is that I like mysteries and the mysterious. I like the feeling that there's something under the surface and that just about eludes my grasp. That I don't exactly know what's around the next corner, what my fellow players will come up with next and how that encounter will enfold. But I'm pretty damn sure it will be fun in some way.

The allure of the mystery works for me both as a player and GM - due to the fact that I have a full-time job that takes up much of my waking hours, I'm leaning very far into improvisation when GMing. That means I make heavy use of random tables and just riffing off what my players are doing. So even as a GM I know that I will often be surprised. I never know where we will end up going into a gaming session.

Thoughts are the most mysterious things of all - how does an idea spark? How does it come to be? I have no freaking clue, but I know that this is what draws me into playing these kinds of games. That spark that can be equal measure genius and idiocy, but it's never boring, never predictable, always a mystery of life.

So that was my two cents for today's post - what's your take on the unpredictability in TTRPGs?

On Starting From Scratch
by Bifford

I've been going my genealogy for quite some time now. A while back I discovered that my great-grandmother (dad's side) had re-married after my great-grandad had died. This was a complete surprise to everyone - my grandad had never mentioned having a step-dad to his sons (my dad & uncle). I've been trying to dig into him ever since, but (despite having a 4 part name and his army number) there were still two people it could have been.

A few days ago I decided to delete everything I had on him and start from scratch, as though I knew nothing. This worked a dream. Within a few hours I had his baptism record, then his birth certificate. I've ordered his death certificate and then I managed to actually fine one army reference to him! Just one, but that is more than I had before! I now know a bit about him and who he was, and it is clear I've got the right person this time.

This can be applied to many things in RPG creation. There are times when crafting an item that it just isn't working. Start again! Maybe don't throw it all out (there could be a gold nugget in there), but put it all to one side and start fresh. Then pull in things that work with the new version from the old. It could do wonders for your thought-processes!

This is actually news regarding the Board Game Geek side of things, but it is pretty cool news for those with games which involve cards and who like to sleeve those cards. A long-time user called Adam has been maintaining a fantastic Geeklist for years which documents the sleeve sizes needed for games. Well, the Geek has now integrated his data into the board game page. There's now a button which tells you what size sleeves you need, how many, and lets you buy them. More info here:

On GenCon. Virtually.
by Bifford

I've never been to Gencon, or any big RPG/boardgame convention (only a really small one locally here). Recent years have seen the ability to watch online via Twitch and similar come about. I decided to give GenCon a concerted effort this year. I watched two full RPG games played out: A "modern day" Call of Cthulhu game and a D&D game, played with two human characters and three "Felted friends" (puppets). I have to say that both were excellent from a gameplay position. Technically, not so great.

The lighting on the panels/games was terrible. Black tablecloths, black material background mixed with low lighting meant it was dull, low contrast and grainy. Anyone with vision problems would have really struggled to watch. The sound levels were not exactly great, either. In the D&D game especially, the GM was really quiet, and if he turned his head the microphone level dropped right off. There were some issues early on with sound drop-out, but they fixed that (a few times) as I think it was to do with internet bandwidth. The event runners get a B- for technical abilities.

Game wise, though, both were (as I already said) excellent. The CoC game had tons of humour, especially at the start before the horror aspect (

) kicked in. This included a mystic and a woman with a socket puppet called "In Denial Danny",who the crowd really warmed to. The puppets D&D game was so funny, too, with two memorable things:

GM: "18 points of poison damage"
Player: "Oh."
Another player: "That seems too much, can you check your numbers again?"
GM: "Yeah sure. .... Oh yeah, I was wrong. 19 points of poison damage."
Player: Glares at other player.

[Been there; done that; lol]

and then at the end, one player gives

Go watch them! It's well worth it.

On respect and promises.
by Bifford

Well, the house we wanted today switched over to sold, and not for us. Did we get a call from the estate agent manager who promised to keep us in the loop more? No, of course not. I've always held others in the business to my own standards - I spent 7 years being an estate agent (realtor) and I just would not have done that. If someone wasn't going to get the sale I'd call and let them know, so they didn't find out via the internet adverts.

I hold a lot of companies, including RPG companies, to the same standards. If they are decent to me I'll stand by them; if they pull a fast one or are underhand I won't. It's not so hard, is it? To treat others respectfully and uphold your promise. So why do so many individuals and companies fail at it so badly?

Answers on a postcard please.

On Choosing a Game using Democracy
by Bifford

We came to the end of another quick 4 session game (intro RuneQuest scenario, which was never going to be long) and needed to decide what to play next. More game ideas were thrown out onto the table (via Discord) than I've ever seen before with our group over the ever-shifting years. I think there were at least a dozen, including games from our newest members, which was lovely to see.

We spent last night's session running through each game, explaining what it would be able, how characters would be created and suchlike. If anyone objected it stayed off the list; if it got a yes or a maybe it went on the list. We then went back over the yes results and further voted, getting the list down to 5 choices. We then secret voted 1-5, with 1 being our favourite. Scores added up and the winner, with the smallest numerical result was a Feng Shui (1e) game where we are a group whose soulds continually reincarnate into a time of need. Some higher power knows when in time we are needed and ensures we are all born into new bodies so that we are then ready to help solve the problem at the crucial moment.

Should be fun!
