On Drooping RPGs into conversations
by Bifford

Just over a month into the new job and I'm settling in well. I had my first 1-2-1 with the boss yesterday and he basically said, "You interview badly, but are much better in practice; I'm glad I hired you." I totally agree with him about how I interview - I've never enjoyed or been good at it shake

Yesterday I was talking to some of the other staff and mentioned I had been working on my magazine, when asked what it was about I did my usual of saying RPG and giving the time-old example of D&D, but a different game system. One of the ladies knew of it because her son plays it every Sunday with college mates. That led to a short chat about everything around that subject, which was cool. Further connection made and a potential new reader of my rag! heh.

How do you explain RPGs to others when it comes up? Do you (like me) say "like D&D, but there are thousands of other systems..." as your explanation? I often ask if they've watched programs like Big Bang Theory, or Stranger Things and use that as an in, too.

On Mental Fatigue
by Bifford

Yeah, okay, my brain is so fried I could not even work out how to spell exhaustion, so went with fatigue instead. Although I somehow managed to write it okay that time. But I did have to go back and correct "friend" to "fried".

It's been a hard day. The main tech worked from home, but wanted me (the new guy, barely one month into the job) to do a "simple" task that had been overdue for 3-4 days. It could have been done Monday, or Tuesday (when he was in) but nope. In the end what he wanted me to do wouldn't work so he said to do something else which would keep the customer happy but was a total bodge. Hey ho. He's in charge.

Anyway, you know what, I'm changing topics and switching from mental exhaustion (hah! got it right again!) to:

On unexpected gameplay opening things up and making things more fun.

Last week's D&D5e game took a turn for the worse. Having given the half-orc fighter an hour to use diplomacy against the bullywog (failed) the rest of us charged forward with the aim of getting my firbolg fighter into the king's hut for a one-on-one fight. That had succeeded and I'd killed the king and told the rest of the village to sling their hook back to where they came from. Problem was, two of the group then broke out into a fight, which I had to break up (the last member was off talking to a dryad). This led to an unexpected (for the GM and us) event: The second in command...sorry...new king of the bullywog's took the opportunity, while we were all distracted and fighting, to pounce on us and disarm us (tired and injured as we were). That session ended with two of us in captivity, one hiding in a book, and the other blissfully unaware that anything was wrong.

This week's game needed to try to rectify that. Which we managed beautifully, though it took the entire evening.

Good GMing means looking for opportunities and pouncing on them to open up the story. This could have been a "do what we came to do, along with side-quest B, then go home." Instead, it was, "do what we came to do, along with side-quest B, which then turned into a secondary session long plot which could also have much wider far-reaching consequences. Then go home." We all enjoyed that little opportunity to delve into the fiasco which was caused by PvP action. And which, by the way, will have a major backlash on one of the characters involved, though he might not realise this just yet.

Next week should be interesting.

On Virtuacon
by Bifford

A few years back RPGGeek ran an online gaming con called Virtuacon. It stopped when it became too hard to organise with not enough attendees. However, Patrick thinks (and I agree) it is time to resurrect this fantastic event. We are all a lot more savvie with online conventions and meet ups, Discord provides a lovely centralised platform on which to run it, and it was always a blast.

I've sat in the online tavern and kept people chit chatting when they were waiting for games, or couldn't dedicate to a game but wanted to be part of the event, or didn't know what was available so popped in to see what GMs would swing by to recruit. I've also played in Doctor Who, Call of Cthulhu, and several others.

Whatever I did in the event, I had fun. I was never able to help organise/run it, due to work commitments, but I helped with the graphics and such. Let's all rally behind Patrick and Virtuacon 2023. Go to the link in the very next segment to show support and let's get this moss-covered boulder rolling down the hill, gathering momentum and rubbing off the moss till it's shiny and new!

On "Retro"
by Bifford

I've always loved my Amstrad CPC464 and my Amigas. I have a A4000 (desktop) which long ago was towered up and expanded to the max. It's been in storage for quite some time and it appears to have become extremely disgruntled by that as it now refuses to work. I've stripped her back to just the plain old motherboard but she appears to be dead.

I am going to an Amiga user group meeting on Saturday (my first in over a decade) so I am hopeful someone with PCB/electronics know-how can take a look at her and fix it. She's an expensive piece of equipment, especially with all my add-ons, and I'd hate to part ways.

I have one particular RPG set much the same as this. AD&D 2e. I own a good handful of the books. I've played in it a few times, way back when I first joined RPGGeek (before I got those books!) but have never run it, never fully read the books (only browsed through) and they just sit there looking pretty.

I could use them with Castles & Crusades, which is very similar in many ways. Will I? Who knows. But I hope to get a use from them at some point. At least with books you know they will still work when you come back to them a decade later!

(I could have tied something in about the Queen, but I didn't want to add to the already extensive library of stuff out there.)

On waffling
by Bifford

Do you know how hard it is to come up with a new "On ...." piece every week? It's the hardest part of this 'blog' I tell ya! So I'm going to tell you how the last week has gone for me, and if I can somehow pull that into some sort of RPG perspective then so be it! It worked last week, like a charm. Let's see what this week brings us......

I started my new job last Thursday. So when you are all reading this I will have been doing the new job a whole week.

My main jobs in life, for the past 22 years have been: Family/children's photographer in what I would now call a pop-up-studio (15 years over two companies); and an estate agent/realtor (7 years, one company).

This new job is as big a change for me as the house selling was from the photography. It would appear that when I change jobs I really change jobs. The company I now work for produces copies of, and duplicates, data on digital media. For example, the SDcard in a Raspberry pi. We take their base image and produce exact replicas. Or the SatNav data in a car's system, or even an electronic book on a USB stick given out as a promotional gift at a convention/fayre.

I'm learning how to do that, and make sure the right order, with the right data, goes to the right customer. I'm also there to help them bring all their instruction manuals and training guides up to date and help their staff make them as streamlined but comprehensive as possible. I expect there will be other things to do, too, but I'm only a week in and still wading through the humungous information dump that is training and learning everything.

My head has been swimming, and I've felt totally out of my depth at times. At other times, when I've been watching and chatting with some staff, it's felt more manageable and less like drowning. I keep telling myself that all new jobs are like this, especially when you are switching fields. In a month's time I expect all will be fine.

Bbbzzzzzzz. Heh. That sound was my brain going "Ding!" and working out a link to RPGs.

New RPG systems are a love-hate for me. I love reading games (when I get the time to, which isn't often) and learning new stuff, but by goodness it can be hard work and tiring to find the space to learn another new system. It's probably why people stick with their tried and true games, the ones they've known and used for years. It's safe; you know it; like an old comfy jumper which you don't want to get rid of, despite the holes and snags. Yet reading and learning that new system and game can give you such a kick of inspiration and excitement that it is intoxifying. Which will almost certainly rub off on your group and give them excitement too.

What is stopping you from trying a new game/system/style of game? Is it because you are "safe" with the one you know? Then I challenge you to try something new and out of your comfort zone! You might just love it.

On Guardians of the Galaxy (GotG) & Bite-size Groot
by Bifford

I couldn't have been happier. Earlier this week I showed my two girls (7 & 11) the 5 short Groot animations. They adored him. They also then asked to watch GotG and GotG2, which we did over the space of four nights. They also loved those.

There is hope for my girls yet! (They've never showed much interest in Marvel/DC before).

The moral of this is that if you want to get someone into anything, be it a movie franchise, an RPG, boardgames etc, then try a "bite-sized" go at it. Nothing big, but a brief introduction might (and I do stress, might) get them into it enough that they want more.

My eldest started on Ms Marvel after. We'll see if she keeps going or not.

On Lightyear
by Bifford

I just enjoyed watching Lightyear, the story of Buzz Lightyear. It's a good film and worth watching. As with most films of this ilk it was loaded with morals and fables.

You don't have to be the only one to shoulder a burden;
Together you are stronger and more capable;
Don't be so narrow minded as to ignore what is going on around you as you might miss life and all its joys;

There's probably more, but those are the big ones. It's worth noting them all, both in real life (tm) and in games. Far too many games have "bad guys" willing to lay down their lives without a care and with very narrow-minded goals. Build self-preservation and flexibility into your antagonists (and protagonists for that matter!) to give them breadth and depth of character. It will make the world you are all playing in so much more immersive.

On Spreading the Love
by Bifford

RPGGeek has always been such a friendly and welcoming place. I know of a few such other places, but not many. Whenever new people drop by they are welcomed and questions gladly answered, even if it is something that has been asked a hundred times before.

The newbie PBF initiative is always a joy to take part in and the various exchanges we run are always great to watch unfold.

I want to thank you all for being so kind, friendly, welcoming and hospitable to everyone who comes by. It helps those people to stay and become part of the community too.

See the next link for a furtherance of this!

On AI Art
by Bifford

I've been playing around a little of late with AI created art.

Colab; Wombo; Midjourney; Nightcafe.

Results have been decidedly mixed. I've seen some fantastic stuff come out of it, and some pretty dire tripe. I think that for certain circumstances this AI art could be fantastic for RPG creators, but at the same time I do not think it will destroy artists. This is like CDs and LPs, or TV and Radio. People thought the CD would destroy the use of LPs, and while they dropped off for a time they have come back with a vengeance; people thought TV spelled the end of radio, but boy were they wrong.

From gallery of Bifford

"labyrinth of coloured chalk and silly string multi coloured photo realistic"

I can knock this up with a single simple sentence. Great if I want to make an RPG item on a shoestring budget, and fantastic for getting inspiration from, especially if you do not have something already in mind. Now try to give that AI art some art direction to make subtle changes. Good luck! Let's say I didn't like the two fuzzy areas in the top there - try re-doing that image, keeping everything the same except for those two areas. Go on, try it. It's impossible. Whereas an artist can do it and have it back to you within a day or so.

So yes, AI art is superb for providing the spark of inspiration, and providing free filler for RPGs. But will it replace artists? Never.

On Wanting to do more
by Bifford

I have an idea for a ZineQuest "zine". Finding the time to start it, let alone have it ready to go for a Kickstarter ZineQuest event, is proving fatally impossible. The idea is still there, however, and I hope that one day soon it might make it onto the virtual paper and from there into a form that is printable.

I've seen posts on Facebook and Twitter recently where ttRPG designers are facing mental blocks. Staring at a blank page for hours without coming up with anything coherent. What was lovely to see was that a good number of well known designers came out of the woodwork to comment on these posts to say they suffer exactly the same issue. In the words of one person, they throw a ton of rubbish spaghetti at the wall and hope something sticks. It's nice to know that the main players in the scene suffer the same problems as us mediocre or low-level players.

I want to do more, and I will damn well keep trying to do so.
