Press Release: The Setting Behind Critical Role Comes to Life in The World’s Greatest Roleplaying Game
13 Jan 2020
Explorer’s Guide to Wildemount Coming in March
RENTON, WA – January 13, 2020 – When Critical Role debuted in March 2015, no one predicted the success of a Dungeons & Dragons liveplay show starring prominent voice actors. Not only has the show inspired a vast fan community of “Critters” to create fan art, cosplay, and even musicals based on Critical Role’s adventures, but the stories crafted by Matthew Mercer and his friends have encouraged droves of new players to try D&D for the first time. The D&D Team at Wizards of the Coast is excited to officially collaborate with Mercer by publishing a brand new tabletop roleplaying book detailing the continent explored in the second campaign of Critical Role, complete with player options such as subclasses, magic items, and more. Explorer’s Guide to Wildemount will be available in stores everywhere on March 17, 2020!
“Critical Role is a great example of why Dungeons & Dragons has been popular for over 45 years: a group of friends getting together, telling stories, and making each other laugh. In this case, the friends are talented performers playing live on camera, but the fun’s the same. We’re thrilled D&D fans and Critters alike can now enjoy playing in Matt’s world, as brought to fifth edition in this lovingly-crafted book,” said Nathan Stewart, VP of Franchise for Dungeons & Dragons.
“I'm sincerely so honored and excited to be working directly with Chris Perkins and this team of talented D&D writers and designers to bring this book to not just our community, but to D&D players everywhere,” said Matthew Mercer, Chief Creative Officer and Dungeon Master of Critical Role, as well as lead writer on the guide. “Dungeons & Dragons has had such a massive, positive impact on nearly my entire life, and I am ever inspired by the endless creativity I see it spark in so many others across the world. To have been able to work with Wizards of the Coast to bring my world to life as an official campaign book is nothing short of surreal. I can't wait to see what other DMs and players create within my world to make it their own!”
The 304-page Explorer’s Guide to Wildemount invites DMs to start playing in any of Wildemount’s regions using introductory adventures, dozens of story-inspiring plot seeds, and the new heroic chronicle system. Adventurers can also expect to discover countless secrets revealed by Critical Role Dungeon Master Matthew Mercer for the first time. Players and DMs will find new character options available for play in any campaign, like the Echo Knight fighter subclass, spells of dunamancy, numerous new monsters, and more!

We're making the RuneQuest Glorantha Bestiary 'Pay-What-You-Want' on DriveThruRPG for the next seven days (regular price is USD$19.99). If you download it, instead of paying us, we encourage you to make a donation to the Australian fire-fighting and recovery effort.
We at Chaosium think Gloranthan beasts are special; however Australian animals are unique and precious - and real. But it is estimated up to half a billion of them have perished so far in the devasting wildfires still raging across the continent. That number is expected to rise dramatically, as vast swathes of habitat have been consumed by flame.
Some places where you can donate:
WIRES is a wildlife rescue nonprofit rescuing and caring for thousands of sick, injured and orphaned Australian native animals.
World Wildlife Fund Australia is directing its efforts towards koala conservation. Thousands have perished so far.
The Port Macquarie Koala Hospital is raising funds to distribute automatic drinking stations in the burnt areas to help in koala and wildlife survival, and sharing the funds with other wildlife organisations in the fire affected regions.

Fans to Get Sneak Peek at Gen Con in August, with Release to Follow at Gen Con 2020
June 11, 2019 — “Permission to barge in, sir?” Now all Stargate aficionados have “permission to barge in” and take on the bad guys with the Stargate Roleplaying Game. MGM, a leading entertainment company focused on the production and global distribution of film and television content including major franchises such as Rocky, James Bond, Fargo, Vikings, The Handmaid’s Tale and Pink Panther, and game design company Wyvern Gaming, are collaborating on a new roleplaying game based on the popular Stargate SG-1™ TV series. Fans will be able to get a sneak peek at the game at Gen Con this August, with the launch expected to follow in 2020. MGM’s licensing agency, Brandgenuity, is managing the development and roll out of the Stargate licensing program and brokered the agreement between Wyvern Gaming and MGM.
Brad Ellis, CEO at Wyvern Gaming, said, “We love the Stargate franchise, and we wanted to create a roleplaying game in which fans can become a member of the SGC. Just imagining progressing a character from level 1 to 20 while exploring the universe is a thrilling thought. We’re building on top of the D&D 5th edition Open Gaming License to make this an approachable game for roleplayers while adding the exploration and mechanics necessary for a modern science fiction setting.”
Robert Marick, Executive Vice President Global Consumer Products and Experiences at MGM, said, “There’s a passionate fanbase for Stargate SG-1 who are eager to immerse themselves in experiences that extend the brand well beyond the TV screen. Collaborating with Wyvern Gaming on the Stargate Roleplaying Game enables us to give those who continue to watch and re-watch episodes of the hit TV show the opportunity to enjoy the series and its memorable characters in a whole new way.”
The new Stargate Roleplaying Game lets players explore the galaxy and aid in the fight against the Goa’uld System Lords. The core rulebook contains all the information needed to create a character and join the Stargate Command (SGC). Players will choose from a set of playable races and classes as they learn the skills, feats, equipment, and technologies needed to make their character thrive as an SG team member. The book also covers how to be a Game Commander (GC). In the game, Stargate Missions are handed down from Stargate Command. Players may be asked to capture a point of interest, explore new worlds, retrieve important artifacts, rescue important VIPs, or assassinate/capture high-value targets. Stargate Missions will launch the Living Campaign that will allow the players’ characters to advance through the ranks of the SGC. Through an online system, players can track their character’s progression, earn unique items, and become a legend within the SGC. For updates on the Stargate Roleplaying Game, sign-up at https://stargatetherpg.com/
Beyond the Stargate Roleplaying Game, MGM and Brandgenuity continue to grow the Stargate SG-1 licensing program with recent products/partners including an upcoming fan convention from Creation Entertainment, collectible figures from Chronicle Collectibles, and tees from The Forecast Agency and American Classics.

International game store chain Good Games will run Australian National
Dungeons and Dragons day this May, during which people wanting to try D&D can visit any store in the country and get a learn-to-play experience.
Good Games has worked in partnership with Wizards Australia and podcast partners I Speak Giant and 7LandHand to create the day, where anyone can get involved in the cultural phenomenon of D&D. Prospective adventurers will be given a miniature and guidance in painting it, a character sheet that matches it and an adventure to play through. In addition to this, new players will receive a voucher that can be redeemed at each store’s next D&D event for a free dice bag. The entire experience, lasting around 2 hours, provides an introduction to the world’s most popular roleplaying game.
“The whole world is finally discovering what a select few of us have known since the 70s - Dungeons and Dragons is great fun!” said Brand Manager, Jaime Lawrence. “We want to welcome them to our stores to experience everything we love about the hobby - minis, dice, adventure and the incredible sense of camaraderie that comes from telling an epic tale together”.

I'm sure there will be other posts with award nominees later, but I always think of Lowell as truly one of our own (even if he did kick my ass in the first Iron Reviewer contest [actually maybe it's because he kicked my ass]).

Apparently Steven D. Russell was in a fatal car accident on the evening of 7/5/2016. The two car accident sent two other victims to the hospital.
Steve Russell is best known as the principle director of Rite Publishing, a small RPG publisher with more than 350 products to their credit. Steve was responsible for publishing a number of products for some of the most popular RPGs in print today (Pathfinder and D&D 5e), as well as some indie and smaller fan-base games (Lords of Gossamer & Shadow).
This news was confirmed by Matt Forbeck in a tweet this afternoon:
Here is the associated newspaper article: http://wdtn.com/2016/07/06/one-man-dead-in-wagner-ford-road-...
While not a close friend, I interacted with Steve on several occasions through social media (twitter/facebook) and on a few podcast episodes. He was always gracious and kind, knowledgeable and enthusiastic about RPGs, and an all around stand-up guy. My heart goes out to his family, friends, and co-workers.
RIP Steve - I hope you are climbing the Grand Stair.

Greg Bilsland, a lead producer/designer for Wizards of the Coast, announced, on his facebook page, his decision to leave WotC. His last day will be June 21st.
Here is the text of his official statement:Greg Bilsland on Facebook wrote:I’ll be leaving Wizards of the Coast on June 21st. It wasn’t a decision I made lightly—working on D&D was my dream job, and it gave my wayward, 24-year-old soul a bit of direction. I came to D&D just before the announcement of D&D fourth edition, and now I leave as the fifth edition tabletop roleplaying game reaches new heights and expands to new horizons. It’s been a wild, crazy adventure (as any good D&D adventure should be), but and now I’m off to pursue new endeavors—including starting my own business. I’m excited for all the unpredictable things that come with that, if a bit trepidatious. I hope to stay involved in gaming as much as possible with writing, editing, marketing—and whatever else may come my way.Bilsland was a stalwart, popular designer for Dungeons & Dragons (4th Edition), working on two of the most popular 4e products (Madness at Gardmore Abbey and Monster Vault: Threats to the Nentir Vale.
Gary Gygax said “random chance plays a huge part in everybody's life.” I think that’s as true about taking chances as it is about a roll of the die. So I’m rolling the die and taking a chance on something new.
Greg stayed on the much-reduced WotC development team throughout the Dungeons & Dragons (5th Edition) playtest, and worked closely with Mike Mearls and Christopher Perkins to develop the 5e core books. The already tiny D&D team at WotC is now another person smaller...
I, for one, and sorry to see Greg leave the D&D team, but wish him well in his future endeavors!
