Neither Nate or I have really posted much of anything in here for a while. Me because I've never been very good at writing what I want to say and Nate because he's been so busy.

I was wanting to let all you crafters (knitting, crocheting mainly) and bggers know that I have started a vcast/blog thing about my knitting and crocheting and just recently added a small gaming section at the end. So if anyone thought that might interest them and can withstand my crazyness and rambling here's the link with the first episode with gaming in it.

I'm sure Nate will come in later and give a more detailed account of what all went on and talk about a couple of games in paticular.

EDIT: Here is said more detailed account: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/74922/what-i-played-at...

I wanted to thank everyone we got to meet and game with. We had a lot of fun and are talking about going again sometime. Nate of course got in more gaming than I as I like my sleep and will get as much as I can now before I won't be able to.

These are the games (that I have not played before) that stood out to me the most in no paticular order:

Vintage
MIL (1049)
Poseidon
The New Era
Mecanisburgo
Urban Sprawl
Greentown

New games we bought from essen preorders, virtual flea market, and flea market:

Hunting Party
1835
K├Ânig von Siam
Cannes: Stars, Scripts and Screens
Bus
Rise of Empires
Dungeon Petz
Upon a Salty Ocean
Dakota
Hermagor
Oraklos

Thanks to everyone who made this a memorable trip. We had fun.

So Nate took off Thursday and Friday for our 4 year wedding anniversary and 9 year anniversary of just being "more than friends". Thursday just so happens to be the day of our anniversary and our FLGS weekly board game night. So ... Can you guess what we are doing?

We are meeting up with two fellow gamer brothers, Jacob and Jerry, shortly after lunch to begin gaming. After everyone else gets off work and such, the rest of our game group will be showing up. How better to begin year 5 than by gaming?

It is a great joy to have such a loving and caring husband who enjoys so many of the same hobbies and interests.

Stay tuned for when I update with our fun filled gamiversary. laugh

Edit: Update

The gamiversary is almost over. We will probably finish up the rest of the day/night with some M*A*S*H.

Nate cooked a yummy Indian lunch in which we got the recipe from this geeklist entry and I made some Naan from one of the following comments yesterday. After lunch we headed over to +1, our FLGS to met with several of our gaming buddies. Here is a run down of what we played and who won.

Return of the Heroes: Cat
Dungeon Lords: Jacob
Race for the Galaxyx2: Simon x2
Through the Ages: A Story of Civilization: Nate
Alien Frontiers: Cat

There were some other games going on that neither Nate or I were playing so I didn't see what was played nor who won.

We had a blast and want to thank everyone who shared today with us and sent us warm wishes!kiss

First Day of Twilight Struggle and the feelings afterwards

So we bought Twilight Struggle a few days ago. Nate's been reading the rules and we decided to play today. Happy Lundi Gras, no work today or tomorrow for crazy party time!!!

We got in 5 games before I got so frustrated! The first 4 times I played the US, they were blue . The first 3 games we didn't even get into the 4th round ... and the second game concluded in the second round.

The fourth time we played we got to maybe round 5 or 6. For the fifth game we switched sides and I played the USSR. We managed to get to round 9.

So the reason for all the frustration is Nate won every single time! At least the fifth time around I was doing pretty good before he got lucky with on card. But after him killing me the first 3 times ... especially wooping my butt in the second game and winning in the second round ... I just wanted to throw my beer bottle at him.

So, here we are venting to all of you. Maybe we will try again tomorrow ... but I'm pretty sure I will play the USSR again. I did much better with them than with the US.

What am I not understanding in this game?! It seems like I should be able to figure out how to play this well ... angry I have a feeling this is going to be a love-hate relationship.

Any help from you guys is appreciated in understanding this game I am determined to like even though it makes me want to destroy it.shake

We finally had a game store open up fairly close to us, +1 Gaming. YAY! It opened up yesterday and it seems like the Grand Opening will be either March 19th or March 26th. They have not listed the official date yet.

After Nate got off work we headed back across the lake to go see how it is. There are pictures of the inside on their web site. They didn't have a "huge" selection of board games, but I suspect that once they start figuring out what their customers will buy they will start to acquire more. We did see quite a few things we thought looked interesting to buy.

We wound up purchasing Twilight Struggle, $55 and Race for the Galaxy: The Brink of War, $25. They have a very cute reward system. My first roll was a 98 + my level which was 1. YAY! A 99! I got me a nice cool tee-shirt!

After our purchase we meet a new geek friend, Nathan. He just purchased Race for the Galaxy. Nate and I, well mainly Nate, taught him how to play it. Then we all played it together. It has been a long while since I've played without any expansions. Nate won, and Nathan seemed to enjoy it. We explained to him about what the expansions add to the base game and other chit chit for a while.

Nathan then asked if we wanted to learn Ascension. So he taught us. I had been looking at the game in the store until Nate told me it was like Dominion, which I did not really like. However, Ascension was a much better game than Dominion. We almost didn't get to finish playing as it was nearing 10 and they were fixing to close, but we did. Nathan won.

If they continue to have as many people as they did yesterday I think this will be a great place to meet new people and get some good gaming in. They had tons of tables for playing games and snacks and drinks to purchase. There are also quite a few restaurants right in the same shopping center if you need other food ... May I suggest Phoenicia.

Over all, Nate and I have high hopes that they can remain open and have a game store closer to us than Baton Rouge. We also hope that plenty of people will continue to go so that there will be people to play with and their selection continues to grow so there will be more choices for us. We have already decided to try going back ... maybe Fridays ... as our "date night". We will see.

Here is a picture of our purchases and my free shirt!

So I'm going to be writing up what we play and stuff ... bear with me as I don't really know how to really do this yet so hopefully this will get better the more I write, and Nate wants one of us to do it and he said it would never get done if it was up to him. I don't write as elequent as he does or spell correctly or anything, but at least it will get done.

So tonight we played Agricola: Farmers of the Moor. Nate won by 13 points. He kept taking all the wood forcing me keep using my peat so I was not able to keep any left over for the bonus points for the Peat Charcol Kiln. I built my two wood rooms before he started hoarding it all thus allowing me to get to 4 people before him, but not allowing me to build fences.

So instead I just decided to have some fun and see how much grain and veggies I could rack up. I had several cards (don't remember which ones right now) that helped in this area. I sowed one field at a time to get two extra grain/veggies, I also had the card that allowed me to get an extra veggie when I sowed them, and had the Market Women (haha I remembered that one) so each time I took veggies I got two grain. By the end of the game I wound up with 16 grains, 12 veggies and 7 fields!

The ending score looked like this:

Cat

Fields: 7 = 4 pts.
Pastures: 0 = -1 pts.
Grain: 16 = 4 pts.
Veggies: 12 = 4 pts.
Sheep: 0 = -1 pts.
Wild Boars: 0 = -1 pts.
Cattle: 0 = -1 pts.
Horses: 4 = 4 pts. (I had the Night Pasture which allowed me to hold 3 and one in my house)
Unused Spaces: 3 = -3 pts. (The spaces I cleared away to build fences)
Fenced Stables: 0 = 0 pts.
Clay/Stone Rooms: 4 = 4 pts. (At least I managed to get some clay)
Family Members: 4 = 12 pts.
Points for Cards: 9
Bonus Points: 5 (Yay for the Tutor!!!)

Nate

Fields: 4 = 3 pts.
Pastures: 3 = 3 pts.
Grain: 6 = 3 pts.
Veggies: 2 = 2 pts.
Sheep: 6 = 3 pts.
Wild Boars: 1 = 1 pts.
Cattle: 4 = 3 pts.
Horses: 6 = 6 pts.
Unused Spaces: 0
Fenced Stables: 4 = 4 pts.
Clay/Stone Rooms: 4 = 4 pts.
Family Members: 5 = 15 pts.
Points for Cards: 2 pts.
Bonus Points: 3 pts.

I guess I should have been paying more attention to the wood than I did early on instead of trying to get my veggie engine up so early ... Oh well. At least I had fun trying to amass a great field empire!!! shake

Since we are trying to get you to first understand ourselves and our gaming tastes here is my gaming history.

My family has always been pretty close. We of course grew up with playing games. I can remember loving to kick my brothers butts at games. Some of the games I remember playing as a kid: Memory, Mastermind, Monopoly, Risk, Clue, Guess Who?, The Game of Life, Pay Day, Operation, Hi Ho! Cherry-O ... I could keep on going.

We would play games together as a family quite often. As we got older we started getting more serious with games. My parents started teaching us more "grown up" card games than what we had been playing. We learned Cribbage, Cinch, and Canasta. We also began trying to make Monopoly and Risk more competitive, but our main competition was with Cinch. When we played Cinch we kept a track as to the wins/losses. At the end of the year we would see who preformed the best individually and as a team. To this day when at least 4 of us are together we have to get in one round (everyone has played with each other).

When Nate and I started dating he was lucky enough to already kinda know how to play Cinch, so he fit right in. When he would come over to my house we would play Cinch with my parents or brothers, whoever was home. We also played many of the above games with my family. When we were alone we would play cribbage together.

Nate and I were walking through Barnes and Nobel and we came across the game table. We stopped to look. Nate expressed interest in getting a game that was two players and portable so we could bring it around and play when we were by ourselves instead of always playing cribbage. He found The Legend of Landlock. He was very interested in it especially since it was a Mensa game. I thought it looked pretty. So we bought it and started playing.

He then got really into looking for more games we could play and poof ... He got Carcassonne and CATAN. And that started it all. That was about 8 years ago and we've progressed pretty far now. We rarely play the games we started with as they seem to play out pretty much the same now that we've started realizing the strageties. We do play Catan when my youngest brother is down as it is one of his favorites.

We've slowly started introducing our families to various games. Some they like and some they don't. My parents are more interested in card games. They seem to have really enjoyed Conundrum, which is a game Nate is working on for the Decktet.

My youngest brother enjoys most games we've made him play. He is still in the transitional/gateway games. We thought he might be able to grasp some of the "harder" games as he is one of those people that should be able to get the rules pretty easy, but there were some that he couldn't get. When he does come down we tend to play a lot of video games as well ... especially when Nate is not home.

My other brother like Components: Traditional Playing Cards or party games. He will always be a Risk player. I feel that he would be the one that would be into war games if we ever start getting them.

I'll let Nate discuss his family if he wants to.

I'm looking forward to trying some war games at some point. I'm not sure how I will like them, but I would like to be able to try some and see. But I doubt that will happen any time soon.

So ... I guess to condense this all down ... I've pretty much been a gamer my whole life ... even though most of it has been Monopoly. And yes, I do still enjoy it ... So you can just bite me
