Europe, end of 20th century. Our economy runs entirely on fossil gas and coal-fired power plants. Climate change is a fact. Which region will have sustainable (non-fossil) electricity production first and wins the game?

Each game round, the electricity demand (in GigaWatt) in your region increases due to the fate of the Dice. It's up to you to build power stations to produce the required GW demand. This provides you with income, with which you can eventually close the old fossil power stations and replace them with sustainable power stations that do not emit CO2. You can trade GW surpluses and GW shortages with the other players or External Markets to balance supply and demand.

So are you going to increase sustainability quickly (with the risk of GW shortages), or are you more careful (at the risk of being late)? The region that is the first to produce more GW than the GW demand and has closed all its fossil power plants, wins. But beware, wind and solar energy sometimes only generate half of their GW power peak.

Board Game: GigaWatt

At a trade fair in the Netherlands I
met a number of enthusiastic game enthusiasts who, from their own field of work in the energy market, have developed a board game that fits in very nicely with the current energy issue to make and use clean energy. Awareness raising and also how to convey this change process really easily with all its complexity is elegantly accomplished here in the colorful and above all energetic theme.

Photo Impression of .... Honey Buzz - Happy Meeple Edition

Honey Buzz is like a Maya the bee who becomes queen of the beehive and has to hold sway to start the free market economy by collecting and marketing the nector as smartly and efficiently as possible. It looks nice and family friendly and it plays! The power of simplicity but with flair! The mechanisms work intuitively and logically. Collect, store and market. Searching for the right honey in the field because it yields the most. You let your bee colony grow with it just like the size of the honeycomb. Smart, efficient, ecological and tactical construction is self-evident here. I liked the sunny and cheerful design, the pleasant parts and the accessibility. In my opinion an inviting family game with a quick challenge!

The bees have discovered economics. The queens believe that if they sell honey to the bears, badgers, and woodland creatures, they will find peace and prosperity. Spring has arrived and it's time to build the hive, find nectar, make honey, and, for the first time ever, set up shop.

Game in Progress

Honey Buzz is a worker bee placement game where players expand a personal beehive by drafting various honeycomb tiles that grant actions that are triggered throughout the game. Each tile represents a different action. Whenever a tile is laid so that it completes a certain pattern, a ring of actions is triggered in whatever order the player chooses. A tile drafted on turn one could be triggered up to three times at any point during the game. It all depends on how the player places their beeples and builds their hive. After all, in the honey business, efficiency is queen.

As you continually expand your hive, you'll forage for nectar and pollen, make honey, sell different varieties at the bear market, host honey tastings, and attend to the queen and her court. There's only so much nectar to go around, and finding it won't be easy. Players will have to scout out the nectar field and pay attention to other players searches to try to deduce the location of the nectar they need for themselves.

Sock Monsters a lovely family game

Designers: Liesbeth Bos, Anja Dreier-Brückner
Artist: Irina Pechenkina

Board Game: Sock Monsters

..... While the house is empty, brave and industrious elves set out to tidy up. But the sock monsters are always lurking in the dark! Search chests and lockers, find socks and be the first to collect three pairs. Monsters are eager to steal lone socks. Watch out or, better yet, unleash them on your opponents. Explore new rooms, find useful items in the hidden compartments of the game box and watch the game evolve as you play.

Board Game: Sock Monsters

A Monster game in process

Board Game: Sock Monsters

Your game character is a brave and industrious elf trying to rescue socks from sock monsters. You start at the center of the game board, while monsters move from the corners in. Players make moves as monsters first. The monsters lurk around the house, always eager to steal a lone sock from a careless elf and carry it into a dark corner.

Board Game: Sock Monsters

The next player to make a move takes a color die and puts it underneath his or her monster figure. When making a move, the players lift the figures slightly above the board, so the die underneath moves with the figure but is not visible from the outside. After making the move, the monster figure can be lifted to see the die. If the top face is showing a closed eye picture, this means the monster has fallen asleep and the player’s turn is over. If the die is showing an open eye picture, the player can perform an action.

Board Game: Sock Monsters

Monsters are eager to steal lone socks. Watch out or, better yet, unleash them on your opponents.

After finishing the monster turn, the players then take a turn as elves, trying to find colored socks in chests and cabinets on the game board.

Board Game: Sock Monsters

Board Game: Sock Monsters

If a matching pair of socks is collected, elves put them on their hands, feet and ears – and that’s really hard work!
The game ends when any one player has collected three pairs of socks.

Board Game: Sock Monsters

Game Overview

This beautifully executed family game came to my table, a wonderful adventure for the hero on socks. The sock monsters are on a roll and are trying to sneak your socks off during the night. Only whole pairs are safe and letting them swing is not done!

During the game you move your elf and the sock monsters where you look for your desired socks where your memory must be sharp. The monsters will leave you without socks with a bit of dice luck. The dice easily rotate among the sock monsters looking for open eyes to strike. The game is a nice mix of memory, push your luck and collect love for colorful socks. Highly recommended for families with younger players!

The quality of the game is simply fantastic!

In Anno 1800 you develop your home island's productive capacity and use ships for lively trade and the development of
new islands in the Old and New World. You must fulfill the wishes of your own population. While the inhabitants are
initially satisfied with bread and clothing, they soon demand valuable luxury goods. You must plan production chains
sensibly and keep an eye on the specialization of your population. The goal: A wise distribution of farmers, workers,
craftsmen, engineers, and investors — but the competition never sleeps and can snatch the new achievements from
under your nose at any time!

Board Game: Anno 1800

While the inhabitants are initially satisfied with bread and clothing, they soon demand valuable luxury goods

Anno 1800 came to my table and the first visual impression the box radiated the adventure of entrepreneurship and the discoveries of the new world in the middle of the industrial revolution. The game was set up on the table and all tiles appeared artificial due to the large amount, but luckily this fell away quickly during play. While playing, all the mechanisms come together nicely. It plays smoothly and lots of indirect interaction.
Which raw materials do you want to produce yourself and which do you trade with your competitors?

Hand card management is the engine of the game and I really liked it. Sail out to new worlds and discover and trade exotic products. The pleasant chain reaction in different raw materials and goods that are linked or necessary to produce more luxurious goods. When someone's hand is empty, the game can end quickly and be aware of this. Although clearing your hand quickly doesn't have to mean you're going to win. Most victory points are still in the points total of especially the more expensive cards.
Different tactics are possible during the game so that not everyone preys on the same goods and resources.

I had a great time with this accessible and elegant development game from the 19th century.

It's a Wonderful World

You build your empire and have only a short time to show that you are the most powerful. You mustn't miss a beat. Choose the right developments, take advantage of your production and leave your competition stunned.

It's a Wonderful World is a design by Frédéric Guérard and published by Geronimo Games. The game is suitable for 1 to 5 players from 14 years old and has a playing time of 45 minutes.

Jury Verdict: You are really building a production chain in this game. Which buildings do you choose, which do you need and which do you not wish for your competitors? What else can you build? The tight deadline of four rounds keeps you on your toes. Watching your empire grow in the meantime is a lot of fun.

I went to the Spiel 2021 international games fair from Wednesday to Friday. From the Netherlands a car ride of about 180 minutes.
After a trade fair break of more than a year and a half, this felt very nice again. I understood from Max Metzler that they were very excited that the event could take place.
It was wonderful to meet enthusiasts, acquaintances and friends from home and abroad again, to marvel at the halls, to discover new titles and
to photograph. In the evenings I had the pleasure of getting to know fellow enthusiasts that I personally did not know very well.
That was very pleasant to catch up after the exhibition day, to hear stories and enjoy. I did not experience wearing the mouth cap as a nuisance and while photographing I did not experience it as a nuisance
asked a number of acquaintances and game authors to temporarily take off the cap.

The room size and wider aisles were pleasant and well ventilated, making for a pleasant stay.
I have grasped that there have been about 94,000 thousand visitors, quite a number despite all the restrictions.
In particular, I also saw and heard many Dutch, Spaniards and Germans and a lost American or Taiwanese.

With my report I consciously wanted to capture an atmosphere alternating with close ups of the games.
In the near future I will upload more current images. I myself look back on a successful visit to Spiel 2021 and now enjoy it.

Presentations of the nominations of the "Nederlandse Spellenprijs 2021"

The Dutch Games Prize is divided into three categories: Family, Connoisseurs and Experts. A family game is suitable for a large audience, including children from 8 years old. A connoisseur game requires a little more playing experience and for those who like a healthy challenge, the expert games are.

The three nominated games for the Dutch Games Prize 2021 – Family:

Cubirds

During a spring walk in the fields you will see many different birds. Can you be the first to bring seven different species back to their families? Or do you focus on two?

CuBirds is a design by Stefan Alexander and is published by Gam'inBIZ. The game is suitable for 2 to 5 players from 8 years old and has a playing time of 20 minutes.

From gallery of henk.rolleman

Jury verdict: The original and varied images of the birds immediately invite to play. With one kind of bird you enclose other birds that you collect. You can use these later to get even more birds, but do you dare to save further or do you play it safe? For when the round ends, your birds may have flown.

Cartographers

The queen wants to claim the best territories for her kingdom. As a cartographer, your job is to find and map these areas, even if your competitors try to lead you astray.

Cartographers is a design by Jordy Adan and published by Intrafin. The game is suitable for 1 to 100 players from 10 years old and has a playing time of 40 minutes.

From gallery of henk.rolleman

Jury Judgment: In this game you reveal a card, after which all players simultaneously draw an area in their own kingdom. Large groups can therefore also do well with this. Every game the queen comes up with different requirements that you want to meet as best as possible. Do you turn it into a work of art or are you just effective? The occasional mess with the neighbors creates a mean edge.

Dectective Club

To join the Detective Club you must demonstrate that you have the required skills. Can you unmask the conspirator or do you know how to hold your own as a conspirator?

Detective Club is designed by Oleksandr Nevskiy and published by Jumping Turtle Games. The game is suitable for 4 to 8 players from 8 years old and has a playing time of 45 minutes.

From gallery of henk.rolleman

Jury Verdict: Using the beautifully illustrated cards, it is a joy for the game master to give clues to the conspirator. As a conspirator, you must be able to improvise with a straight face when the hour of truth arrives. Will the detectives be able to unmask you or will you convincingly defend your chosen cards? Young and old can use their creativity in this.

Game Play

The three nominated games for the Dutch Games Prize 2021 – Kenners:

The Dwarves of Nidavellir

To defend the dwarf realm, you want to recruit as strong a dwarf army as possible. For this you go from tavern to tavern to find matching soldiers. And hopefully the composition of your army will also attract special heroes.

The Dwarves of Nidavellir is a design by Serge Laget and published by White Goblin Games. The game is suitable for 2 to 5 players from 10 years old and has a playing time of 45 minutes.

From gallery of henk.rolleman

Jury Verdict: This game has a special coin bidding mechanism whereby betting one worthless coin lets you improve another coin. Since you are the first to recruit a soldier with the highest bid in a tavern, this already presents a nice dilemma. In addition, you balance between attracting heroes and making divisions very powerful. Lots of choices in this fast paced bidding and collecting game.

Each turn in Nidavellir bid a coin on each tavern. In descending order, choose a character and add this character to your army. Each dwarf class has its own scoring way: blacksmith, hunter, warrior, explorer, and miner. Meticulous recruitment will allow you to attract a powerful hero to your army.

You will also be able to increase the value of your gold coins thanks to the smart "coin-building" system and get the best of the other Elvalands.

From gallery of henk.rolleman

Jury Verdict: You are really building a production chain in this game. Which buildings do you choose, which do you need and which do you not wish for your competitors? What else can you build? The tight deadline of four rounds keeps you on your toes. Watching your empire grow in the meantime is a lot of fun.

Micro Macro: Crime City

What a criminal city this is. Robberies, murders, too many to list. The police have their hands in their hair. Are you able to solve the crimes?

MicroMacro: Crime City is designed by Johannes Sich and published by White Goblin Games. The game is suitable for 1 to 4 players from 12 years old and has a playing time of 30 minutes.

From gallery of henk.rolleman

Jury Verdict: This is a surprising puzzle game. Armed with a magnifying glass, you and your fellow detectives try to solve increasingly difficult cases in the huge city map. Follow the trail of the victims and the perpetrators. You get to know this criminal city better and better. The game uses a well-known and beloved concept to give it a new, addictive twist. At the end, it turns out that additional crimes are hidden in it.

Lost Ruins of Arnak

Board Game: Lost Ruins of Arnak

You have found traces of a great civilization on a desert island. You lead your expedition to find long-lost artifacts as quickly as possible, defying danger in an attempt to uncover the island's secrets.

The Disappeared Ruins of Arnak is a design by Mín and Elwen (Michaela Štachová and Michal Štach) and published by White Goblin Games. The game is suitable for 1-4 players from 12 years old and has a playing time of 30 minutes per player.

From gallery of henk.rolleman

Jury Verdict: There is a lot to discover in this game. The pressure of competitive expeditions is felt by the limited number of laps. You can't deepen and explore everything. Where will you dig, which assistants will support you, which route to victory will you choose? The adventure beckons in a nice mix of worker placement and deck building.

Everdell

In the valley of Everdell, the forest animals set up a beautiful civilization. As one of their mayors, you try to make the year the most successful for your city. For this you build houses with gathered materials and you prefer to let the right residents move in there.

Everdell is designed by James A. Wilson and published by White Goblin Games. The game is suitable for 1-4 players from the age of 12 and has a playing time of 90 minutes.

From gallery of henk.rolleman

Jury verdict: The enchanting fairy tale with colorful animals and fabulous prints immediately invites you to play. You try to cleverly combine your cards with the possibilities on the board, so that you can do more and more. Because you decide when your next season starts, it really feels like your own game. The eye-catching game material makes this perhaps the most beautiful game of 2021!

Maracaibo

During your sea voyage through the seventeenth century Caribbean, you will establish settlements, trade and fight naval battles. In the meantime, you can still worry about certain events, which may even change the accessibility of some places. Can you gain the most influence?

Board Game: Maracaibo

Maracaibo is designed by Alexander Pfister and published by Geronimo Games. The game is suitable for 1-4 players from 12 years old and has a playing time of 120 minutes.

From gallery of henk.rolleman

Jury Verdict: This huge strategic game tells a different story every time. All sorts of people emerge from the thick deck of cards that you can recruit as assistants or help you deliver goods and items. The speed at which you cruise around determines how many turns you have. So the game can ripple on or be played very hard.
