The Game Changer Channel blog (Classic Games Redefined)

This is the blog formally known as GamesByRich.com:Classic Games Redefined blog. It focuses the thoughts of the design process of Rich Hutnik and other things Rich, gaming related (pretty much), finds interesting. It has been changed to reflect a clear focus in regards to what is being worked on, and also in relation to the new name for the YouTube channel.

I am not going to go into details about what is going on with the D.I.C.E project at this time. However, I just wanted to stop in to say it is taking yet another direction, based on issues that I could run in legally, based on possible naming. So, I am doing other things. The direction is heading to provide bits for game design, with components that work together, with the D.I.C.E (ok, dice) for it, being an initial part. Idea here is to have things as fluid as possible, while having enough substance. I am trying to work out the killer app problem for the system. I have some candidates, but I need to do more. I still haven't worked much in the area of what I had originally indented for the dice. I would want to see if I can get the other game system communities engages. I could see my original Rick and Morty, Chess in the multiverse game also being involved somehow down the road.

Ok, this is about it for now. I need to get to other things.

Game genre fatigue

John Hancock came up with this video. I feel the concept is worth discussing more. I had thought of something I called "game mechanic fatigue", but I like "game genre fatigue". The basic idea on a personal level is you burn out of a certain game genre. I see it is entirely possible that an entire genre can suddenly stop being made. Think of guitar games, skateboarding and others.

Any thoughts here on this?

Here is the John Hancock video:

I am still working on the DICE game system by the way. I am finding a number of interesting games with it. One of them is Splendor gone off in a weird direction.

It is time to shut up about the D.I.C.E Game System for awhile.

It is time I shut up about this project. I will look to remain quiet for an undisclosed period of time, and see what I can do, without announcing to get a viable product to market, that can sell sufficiently in order to be sustainable and build up a fan base. I am now going to go into game development, and look more online. When I get more together, including a budget for development, and a few real good games approaching killer app level, I will then proceed. All this will be done without the help of anyone I don't know, and even those who do. It stands to be a do it yourself project, and self-made, in what I need to do.

So, I will shut up awhile and develop away from eyes of strangers, until I am presentable enough to be able to kickstart something.

D.I.C.E Game System vs other dice game systems.

For now, I figure I will go with D.I.C.E Game System as the name for the project I am working on. I am doing a bit of a backronym with D.I.C.E because I can think of a number of ways for what it means, and I want the word DICE in there, without just saying "Dice". Anyhow, here are some others I found out there, and what I am doing is a bit different. A main difference is that dice in a suit (a color) are connected together and dependent on each other. This enables 7 values on six dice, and other perks. I will have multiple other colors for suits with the dice, and have different colored pips also. Idea is to have a system I can do a range of games with. So far, I have created 4 games for it, of classic variety, and see i can do a number of dice versions of Euros, like think of Splendor as a dice game.

Anyhow for anyone interested in seeing other dice game systems, check out the links below, but I list them here:
* Six D Six
* Nestortiles
* 36-Dice: D.I.C.E Game System can be seen as likely the closest to this game system, but D.I.C.E Game System has the dice work differently and dependent, to generate a larger number of outcomes, and do things like be able to roll a 1 on 2D6, while also having a bell-shaped curve where 7 has the most frequent outcomes on the dice.
* Knot Dice
* Square Shooters: This is a bunch of dice than enable the rolling of a deck of cards.

I also created a Geeklist here on these others:
https://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/230401/dice-based-game-sy...

Feel free to add to it.

More possible games for the D.I.C.E Game System

Here are a few other ideas I am kicking around for D.I.C.E
* Splendor: The Dice Game. Well you can think of it as that. It would go off in its own way.
* A version of Catan using the D.I.C.E Game System, or something like Catan. Dice values would show what can be produced, and other dice are rolled to be able to say what is produced.
* Pit: The Dice Game, where the idea is to trade dice to get sets you bank for points.

There will be a bunch more uses. I also found I am able to have it so that 7 can have the greatest outcome while rolling two of the dice, while adding a 1 or 13 also as possible outcomes. Another thing also, if you wanted to do the 3D6 roles for the likes of Dungeon and Dragons, with the dice, you could end up generating outcomes of 2 or 1 also, and even 19. There you go, 3D6 generating a 1-19 outcome roll, with a bell-shaped curve to it.

EDIT: I would add more, if you roll 4D6 of these dies, the possible outcomes are 1-25, if you tweak.

Some games developed for the D.I.C.E game system

In a prior post, I made mention of a dice-based game system I was working on and games for it. So far, I have a number of games I did for it, with more on the way:

* A version of Freecell, modified by fusing in Scorpion solitaire that went well.
* A game in the Yacht/Yahtzee family I am calling Mega Yacht, which played well. I am not a fan of Yacht games, but this seemed to play well. It needs more playtesting.
* A simple press your luck game called Bank or Blank, which played well and the blank sides add something to it.
* A version of Liar's Dice/Bluff/Perudo, without a name, I need to try more.

I have more planned, but so far, it is going well. Stay tuned for more details. I also want to use the dice with the likes of Backgammon and Monopoly.

I have ideas for a Chess-like game, and also some trick-taking stuff. I will look forward for the game getting the Icehouse Pyramids treatment and other people designing games for it.

Rick and Morty chess anyone?

So, I was wonder how in the heck to end up trying to make chess variants more popular and viable. To that end, I had proposed to have a chess variant that played with pieces from various universes, in and intersecting place. I had an idea for the game, and even started a guild on here to discuss it.

Well, inspired by Rick and Morty, and the infinite channel cable they would have on, how about a Rick and Morty chess game?

I started a discussion here:
https://boardgamegeek.com/article/26737571

And here:

I discussed prior the idea of doing a dice version of Barbu. I was thinking of taking it further and coming up with a dice game system, which would also be able to replace cards with dice.

Input is wleocme. If this takes off, then I could have WWB dice out there, for anyone who wants them.

Please discuss it here:

I am working on more trick-taking dice games, and maybe dragging Barbu in.

So, recently I decided to dust off my game Hi-Low Jambow, which is a combinatorial trick-taking dice game. I did another called "Duplicate Heartless".

Well, there was utter confusion regarding having the mix of two color dice, and having one die be suit, and another one being the value (like the way 42 works). As a result, I went back to the drawing board for some designs, and the hope to have something, or a series of them. I will need to play more, but I found at least one was interesting enough solitaire. It is much more luck driven than the other ones I did, but I found that it was interesting, particularly when I added a value on the die that was toxic (player who wins the most of that value scores no points for a hand).

Anyhow, I press on. Will see how it goes. Now, if I can only end up coming up with something commercially viable.
