Miniature Games Construction Yard

In this blog I'll talk about various miniature games. Custom miniatures and minor conversions are my favorite pastime. I'll cover scenery making and painting too. The WIP you'll see here is all about Necromunda, Epic 40,000, Warhammer Fantasy 5th Edition, Warmaster and Warhammer 40K 3rd Edition.

Stripping paint from miniatures is easy (and little bit messy).

I will provide a step-by-step walkthrough to assist the miniatu re games community. The question about how to strip paint from miniatures appears frequently in several forums.

The day I discovered this method on the internet will be remembered as a milestone in my miniatures collecting hobby. Previously I just spraypainted second-hand miniatures with a new black coat. But this resulted in loss of detail. Now with Dettol, the paint is removed without any damage to the plastic!

Buy Dettol and get a glass jar with a lid. I have bought my Dettol in the Netherlands in a shop called "Etos". The product has a peculiar smell so I'd suggest to put a lid on the glass jar.

Normally the Dettol has an amber color, but this jar holds the flued that has been used for 2 paint-strip sessions already. And it still has the power to remove paint!

I strongly advise to wear latex gloves. Dettol is not highly corrosive, but without protection your hand will become very rough, like you've used sanding paper on them. Wear goggles to protect your eyes. In fact, read the instructions about Dettol on the bottle itself. (Don't drink it etc...) Well, for all USA citizens, don't repeat what I did. I don't want lawsuits.

Badly painted miniatures WERE cheap on eBay. But those days are over due to the fact that stripping paint is easy. I have some Space Marine Eldar vehicles with an ugly paint job.

I used a toothbrush and made sure to push the paint off. Don't pull it towards you or the bristles will splatter you full of paint and Dettol. I have used an old towel to gather the spilled product and paint.

When the paint comes off, it feels "rubbery" and sticky. Sometimes you must use a toothpick to stab the paint out of small gaps in the miniatures.

When finished, rince all items with water. The Eldar can now be repainted and used in a game of Warhammer Epic 40,000!

(That's how I do it. Trying this method yourself is at your own risk.)

From Wikipedia (so judge the veracity for yourself):

"As with other manufactured household cleaners, Dettol has the potential for causing lethal toxicity. It is poisonous when ingested, and even when it is unintentionally inhaled.

In a case report, a 42-year-old British man died from Dettol overexposure in May 2007. The autopsy was not able to conclude whether the lethal exposure to Dettol was via ingestion or inhalation.[4]"
