Summaries are Brilliant

Context: Dauntless Hunters

For those not following the project, I spent the last couple of weeks switching the format for units in Dauntless Hunters.

It's amazing how much of a difference having summaries of abilities added to the play experience! I got a chance to test it with someone who's not seen the project since before the rage stars update and deliberately picked a monster and group that she'd never seen before to play with.

The cards sliced the rules explanation time to almost nothing and made a huge positive difference to gameplay. We may have paused for a clarification once or twice, never for more than a few moments. It's impressive how a small interface change can have such a dramatic impact on how gameplay is experienced.

I think there's a tension with putting this sort of thing on components. On the one hand it's desirable to minimise text on components, in some cases games reduce it entirely to iconography (which is a massive boon for translation!) On the other hand it's just so useful to be able to have information at your fingertips.

What I really want to do next is work on support monsters - respawning monsters that support the main monster by returning to attack time and time again until it's defeated. I think they'd really help the game reach its potential in the two player cooperative mode.

However what I think I should do next is rewrite the rules and get them to some blind testers. There is *so much* I could do with this project, but ultimately if it's going to succeed I need to make it launchable and see if it can generate the support to go into 2017 or not.
