In life you have to do a lot of things you don't f*cking want to do. Many times, that's what the f*ck life is... one vile f*cking task after another.

Through the Ages Beta Updates, Adds AI and More
I can't begin to tell you how happy I get when I write a lengthy post about a bunch of stuff and the first comment has nothing to do with anything in the post, but instead, asks about something we didn't write about. The best of these usually come in one of the following two forms: "What about 7 Wonders?" or "What about Through the Ages?".

Well, today, we have actual news about Through the Ages: A New Story of Civilization, so you can all just calm down.

The latest beta update from Czech Games Edition turned a really great multiplayer beta into a fully-fledged board game port and, they did it with the usual awesomeness that we expect from CGE.

First of all, the app now has local play vs. three levels of AI, and the AI is good. Very good. I have yet to win a game and have come in last place in several games against both the medium AND easy AI. That's exciting, because AI allowed CGE to also add Challenges to the game. These are solo games where the rules are changed a bit, so there's more to worry about than just how many culture points you earn. For example, your leader never dies, so you only get one for the entire game. Another has no war, aggression, or pact cards but 3x as many Strength related events. Oh, and you can't win unless you have more Strength than your opponents at the end of the game. I've been having a blast with the Challenges, and I haven't even won one yet. They're basically equivalent to the campaign in Galaxy Trucker without the connected narrative, which would be hard to do in a 4X game.

CGE has also added achievements, which are fun to see unlock as good (and bad) things happen during games. They've also added 16:9 support, so the game now works on phones!

Even looking at the main menu, the CGE polish is apparent. They've added animations on the menus that really make it seem that TtA is ready for the big leagues. I'm sure there are still a ton of bugs and whatnot in the background that CGE is working to squash, but this update really makes you realize that TtA is coming to our phones and tablets, and it might not be as far off as we thought!

Brad and I will be at Gen Con later this week and will speak with CGE. I'll report back if we have any other info in regards to Through the Ages, as well as all the other cool stuff CGE was working on.

Oh, and here's a reminder of how much I suck. I've literally played hundreds of games of TtA, and yet I lost--poorly--to three easy AIs.
